I liked this paragraph especially the "scorching rock and roll" part.

Mr. James has a solo album on the near horizon, most likely arriving in the fall. "Another Jacket record is in progress," he added — "I've just recently rediscovered this desire for scorching rock 'n' roll, and that's hopefully what we'll get around to"

Sweet! I'm especially intrigued by these bonus tracks. Looks like Carl and Bo recorded parts recently -- maybe we'll see them pop up in sets this tour??

I defiantly think it changes the dynamic as to whats played at RR at least a little....

Not to mention it makes for a nice soundtrack to road trip it out there with !!

When can we pre-order on vinyl? I assume it will be pressed. Also, I wonder how different the mix is going to be. I can see some things being drastic as it is a remix, not just a remaster.I'm hoping it's like a Let it Be Naked style difference.

just checked ATO and there is not anything yet. I am sure after this good pub, we'll see an email go out this week. It will be my 3rd version of ISM I have purchased on vinyl. Try explaining that to your wife and see how quickly the eyes glaze over...

For what it's worth, the track listing is up on Itunes. The 3 new songs are En La Ceremony, Grab a Body, and That's Too Bad. The two songs that don't get the demo treatment are One Big Holiday and Just One Thing.

My Morning Jacket is reissuing 2003's It Still Moves (ATO) remixed and remastered as a special deluxe package with new artwork and exclusive photos. It will include frontman Jim James' ten original demos plus three unheard tracks from the original sessions on 4 x LP 180 gram vinyl and 2 CD in expanded soft-pak. For James, It Still Moves was the only My Morning Jacket album he could look back on and wish that some things were different about it. So, with the help of the band's longtime friend Kevin Ratterman behind the mixing desk, James revisited and tweaked all the old material & remastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering, this new version still has that shimmering grandeur that lent it such a singular identity, but there is an increased strength and clarity to it now

That was my favorite part too!  I was so excited by all the great news in that piece that I almost couldn't fall asleep last night.  There is so much to look forward to!

ISM is my favorite album of all time so I'm especially curious to hear the differences.  It sounds like it will be even better.

If JJ's album comes out in the fall, then a tour to follow is possible.  Maybe he'll do some shows around Lockn fest.  Even if he doesn't hit the road, that man is busy.

Interestingly, the "scorching rock and roll" statement seems to be in direct conflict with his statement around The Waterfall press time that the Waterfall was their rock album and that the second album was going to be more dance and soul-based. I wonder if they are scrapping/putting aside some of their previous recordings from The Waterfall sessions?

I was hoping for a sort of Let it Be Naked treatment to this remix as well. However, I used my Audio Technica AT-50X headphones to hear these tracks and they sound incredible compared to the original. The bass on Golden comes through. And Magheetah does not sound so muddied anymore. You can actually hear everything really clearly. Who knows what the rest will bring though. The fact that is keeps getting labeled as a remixing is pretty key, as if it was just cleaning up the sound throughout they would say remastering. Yet everything says remixed and remastered so there's hope for something different.

Yeah im definitely not upset with it or anything, cause I didnt think anything needed revamping with ISM anyway, but i took it as a "were recording this with Bo and Carl" type of thing

Most definitely.. Well, the unreleased bonus tracks he said were re-recorded with the full band so there's that. No matter how it shakes out, I'm stoked. What would be really cool is if they reissued The Tennessee Fire as redone by the whole current band. How those songs have translated live is just unreal.

I'd say that is a good guess, that the follow up to the Waterfall will not be what they initially said it would be but will be newer songs or those Waterfall-session songs re-arranged or re-recorded to hopefully be more rocking.  I always take it with a grain of salt when an artist says "the next piece is gonna be like ______."  With time they can change their minds, or things lead them in another direction that what they might've thought many months ago.

I got excited to hear about the scorching rock, because that is what I like best, lots of screaming guitar solos and riffs like on Z, but we'll see if that actually comes to pass.  The Waterfall to my ears, is a lot less rocking than Jim described it.

I put the CD in the shopping cart to see how much the shipping is, and it's 11 dollars, too. That pretty much rules out me preordering it from the MMJ store.

The digital preorder is sold out right now. LOL

I wonder if this will see release on the Pono store or HDTracks.

$11 for just the CD? Wow.... I was somewhat ok to pay that for the Vinyl (even though in this day and age that's steep). I haven't seen preorders for the vinyl anywhere else otherwise I probably would have done that as I assume anywhere else the shipping will be cheaper (if not free).

I'm just stoked that when I get back from the road trip to Red Rocks, that vinyl will be waiting for me.

The three of us are clearly paying attention, as this is the first thing that came to my mind as well.  Also, remember when Jim said that he almost didnt play any guitar during the Waterfall sessions until Carl brought in the reverb tank and re sparked his love for it?  So, I get the sense that there is a constant ebb and flow when it comes to what Jim wants to do.  I really hope that his desire to scorch lasts long enough to get it on tape, but at the very least we have this stretch of shows to look forward to where that will hopefully manifest itself. :D

Either way, even though the interview was brief, and maybe i'm looking into it too much, but Jim came off as being pretty upbeat as opposed to some of his interviews during and leading up to the last tour.  Hopefully that back is feeling much better with the time off!

he makes the "scorching rock and roll" comment and follows up with "hopefully what we'll get around to"

Lots of tastes can change in 18-24 months, so maybe those songs become The Waterfall b-sides and they come up with mostly all-new material based on this renewed love.

I read somewhere that Jim has been doing a lot of Pilates lately.  If this is something he started after his latest incident and has continued since then, I think we might indeed be seeing a revitalized Jimmy baby on stage this tour.

I've read two quotes from Jim recently, one said that he feels younger than ever right now. The other stated that his days of dancing around the stage are over, and he is content to just sing and play, so we shall see! haha

The new remix of Mahgeetah DEFINITELY has more presence on Jim's vocals and the guitar solos just RIP outta the speakers. Sounds great, but I don't know if I would take this new definition and clarity over the warmth of the original mix. Will have to compare this side by side with the original vinyl!

Now if only they would reprint Okonokos...

Compiled live recordings of TTF from the past few years pressed to vinyl would probably be the greatest thing ever. Picture of You is way too good from OBH.

What's interesting is that if you order the Vinyl + t-shirt, the shipping is only $7.69 but just the vinyl is over $11.

I tried to order the deluxe vinyl with the T-Shirt, and the cheapest cost for shipping was $15.70. I tried to order just the deluxe vinyl, and it still came up as $15.70 for USPS 3-day delivery (the cheapest option available to me at check out). Why would the shipping be like that!?!

They banged me $12.20 ($12.20, Really??) for shipping for deluxe. I think it's whatever they want at the time you order. Even if they ship to different locations it should just be flat rate. Wet dreams.

No matter, I'm going to be thrilled to listen to this. If I wait to order later I'm still going to pay for shipping so a few bucks more does not really matter. Let's just hope things don't get fucked up as usual with the merch.

So excited for this.  I've been saying for years that the vinyl pressing of ISM is a mess, just very flat.  I would have never guessed it was recorded to tape based on the sound on the vinyl - that was a very nice surprise.  Hopefully it gets a good press in addition to the remaster!

Comes out right before RR, any chance of an ISM album "run thru" at RR?

That was very much on my mind too. I could see them leaving ISM untouched night 1, and night 2 being a complete run through the album front to back.

It must have been a glitch to my advantage because today I am seeing $15.70 as the lowest. My option yesterday morning was parcel post and that's no longer available. That sucks, Mr. White. You deserve a break as much as you invest in this band. I'll buy you a beer in Louisville in a few weeks.

Deluxe vinyl + shipping = 74,73 dollars. I mean, it's my favourite album in the world, but 74 bucks for a record? Argh. I just can't make peace with that price. And I'm 34 years old working fulltime :).

What I don't understand is the differences in the prices. I paid $53.95 plus $12.20 shipping. Yeah it might be a bit more or less depending on where it's shipped but some are saying $74 or $75 dollars total? That's out of line.

I'm thinking that must be for international shipping? Still, I agree it's way out of line.

What? The band doesn't get paid unless you buy from here? I think it's fair to say everyone on this forum wants as much of what they spend on Jacket stuff to go to the band, but we are also people who live in the world and need to save a few bucks here and there. If WU could charge reasonable rates for shipping, I think we wouldn't have any complaints. But if I can get well-packed records from Joe Ebay Seller for $4.99, then WU can probably do better than $15-17 for shipping.

But, hey, you got a shot at a giveaway that some of us won't.  So, you got that going for ya.

I almost always buy direct from bands (either in pre-sales, on their site, or at a live show) but I have not been alone in the complaints about the shipping costs for WU. It's ridiculous that I saved $20 by getting it through BullMoose and a large part of that is due to the shipping. I'm not even asking for free shipping from WU but $17 is a bit much for me from a company (WU, not MMJ) that has shown very little care to the fans after many years.

It's not just the shipping costs.  Didn't The Waterfall pre orders get messed up and arrive very late..... like several weeks after arrival of deluxe packages ordered from other places.

It's not just MMJ, it's probably about 90% of major label artists who fuck up their "official" pre-orders, due to insane shipping fees or delivery weeks after the release. I haven't pre-ordered from an official band site since waiting SIX WEEKS AFTER RELEASE for delivery of a "pre-ordered" Neil album. My musical life has never been more stress free. Support local shops! Or just order from Amazon. Either way, it's the usually the cheapest option and you'll get it in the quickest time.

Oh, I could go on and on about my issues with WU and multiple different order issues or communication breakdowns (telling me one thing....multiple times....and then failing to deliver on that specific thing). There's a lot to complain about, based on my experience. The shipping costs are just the constant reminder lol

Will be interesting to see how the new vinyl compares to the original. The re-press was notoriously shitty (one of the worst pressings EVER) but the original is sweet syrup to my pancake ears. Looking forward to some reports once people get their hands on it!

Also, I think this is a great move business-wise for the band. No better way to make a few new fans than to re-release your most accessible (and arguably, best) album.

This is my exact thought too!  It'll end up getting delivered when I am in Denver and will sit on a sidewalk since I live in a Chicago apt. building with no real front door...little confused why they timed it this way, given the same hardcore fans traveling to Denver to see MMJ play would be the same fans to buy this reissue on preorder.....

How are they supposed to know if you're going to RR or not? If I have it right, it's Firebrand that controls the online merch (non-fan club) and WU that controls the ticket sales (and fan club merch). I seriously doubt they are in contact with each other about who is in the fan club and who isn't and who is going to Red Rocks and who isn't.

It appears to have leaked (at work so haven't tried downloading to verify), so those that are traveling can hopefully get themselves a copy to hold themselves over.

Obviously they would not actually know, that was not my point.  My point was it is quite obvious that the same group of people would be doing both things, meaning why would they time it so that it is being delivered the same weekend as a show that they know will draw people to travel for it....anyway it isn't a huge deal I think it is still a weird oversight to make.

To say that it's an oversight would assume that it's something they should have been concerned about and I don't feel that way.  What about this?  Maybe they were extra thoughtful and decided to release it on that day so that those who can't make it to Red Rocks for whatever reason have something MMJ related to celebrate with this Memorial Day weekend.

My Morning Jacket
It Still Moves (Deluxe Reissue)
(ATO)
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

When older albums are reissued, the acts involved typically have little if any input into the process. Since they often don't own their masters, the labels are free to re-release the music in any way they feel will get fans to open their wallets again to purchase what they have already bought. Thankfully, that's not the case with My Morning Jacket and this revamped version of their landmark 2003 opus It Still Moves.

Frontman/singer/songwriter Jim James never felt the set was mixed to its fullest potential due to being rushed to get the band's first major label effort to market in the midst of a heavy touring schedule. He gets a rare second chance to correct that for this deluxe edition. Not only is the disc remixed, but it is remastered too and three tracks that didn't make the initial pressing— augmented with input from members of the current lineup — have been added. While those tunes, along with the often ragged, sometimes even distorted, predominantly acoustic demos of the 10 cuts, are far from essential, the freshly buffed audio of the original is well worth hearing.

My Morning Jacket prides itself on no two of their releases sounding the same. Still, from the sprawling majesty of opener "Mahgeetah" to the slow, sweet crawl of the heavenly nine minute "I Will Sing You Songs" and the dreamy drift of "Steam Engine," there is a swirling, timeless quality to It Still Moves that is still, well, moving. Jim James sings like he's possessed with an angelic spirit that makes the often inscrutable lyrics seem meaningful and the band plays with a tamped down rootsy synergy most outfits never find. The floating, often laconic yet stirring vibe running though the album is both emotional and visceral. At its most straightforward this is psychedelic country with blues and rock tinges, but it's much more delicate, discreet and indirect than those genres imply.

The demos provide a fly-on-the-wall vantage point for how this music sounded in its earliest incarnation, but it's likely only diehard fans will play them more than once. Newly added selections "En La Ceremony" shifts from a tropicalia vibe to a funky bluesy groove and "Grab a Body" brings a horn section to add a bit of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes R&B to a mostly instrumental piece that doesn't seem to have a sense of where it's going.

The enhanced audio remixing/remastering makes this already milestone, if not quite career defining, work even better. It shows that James was right to return and try to improve on what was already close to perfection.

Easy Morning Rebel was a song I HATED when I first had ISM as an 8th grader in 2004...I hated it...always skipped it...then, in 2007 or 2008 i heard a bootleg with Jacket playing it with the Dearland Horns (I think, could've been another section) and it knocked me out...and as time has passed, it's become one of my very favorite live songs.

That first mix did that song no favors, it seemed, in comparison to live versions, to have no umph, no groove......  very intrigued to hear this new mix !!!!!

Great Jim interview.  Here's a good bit...

STEREOGUM: Where did the name It Still Moves come from?

JAMES: It's just a feeling of something still moving you after all these years. Something that still moves you when you hear it, like listening to an old Willie Nelson song. And then I also wound up thinking about photographs, still-motion...something that's still or seemingly not doing very much can still move you. I think about that in nature a lot. Looking at a flower or a tree or whatever. I feel like the world gets so consumed and gobbled up by action, and the pace of life is so frantic, and people feel like in order to move somebody you have to do something shocking or violent or something insane and fast. I was just thinking a lot about how sometimes the most moving things are completely still or seemingly very simple.

STEREOGUM: Originally there was talk about the potential for a quick followup, a companion piece for MMJ's last album, The Waterfall: something dancier, more electronic, but rooted in the same sessions. Has that plan been abandoned now?

JAMES: Yeah, for the time being. There are a couple of those songs that are going to find their way into the world in the next span of time on soundtracks, or Record Store Day, things like that. As an entire companion record...there's still a lot of songs that haven't been used, but for now I'm moving onto something else.

The top link pretty much nails how I feel about this reissue.  I think they tweaked it enough to make it just a little more accessible and clearer, but it still maintains all the otherworldiness that gave the original its charm and power.  This will likely be the version I go to when I want to listen to ISM.  Jim did a great great job.

The Pancakes and Whiskey review had this gem which without resorting to much hyperbole shows me that the reviewer must have had a little too much pancakes and whiskey before writing: "Nor did I think that any part of it screamed unfinished. In fact, before the release of last year's The Waterfall, I would have told you that it is their best album. (The Waterfall is their masterpiece, no ifs, ands, or buts.) "

I'm not a Waterfall fan. Even for those here that are is there anyone that even thinks its a top-3 album?

It Still Moves
At Dawn
Z

The Waterfall
Tennessee Fire

Circuital
Evil Urges

I don't think it's near their best album, but I do really really love it. And moreover, I can see where, in a career retrospective, The Waterfall is the most "all-encompassing MMJ album", in that it captures the spirit of both old-school, rocking MMJ and the post-Z MMJ. I think other albums capture specific versions of MMJ much better, but I don't think there is a single album that shows all sides of MMJ, and yet still feels like a cohesive album and keeps up the quality throughout all songs quite like The Waterfall.

That placement is totally reasonable. Everyone has their albums that they like more than most fans. I'm sure there are Pearl Jam fans that think Riot Act or the self-titled album are top-4. I'm sure there are Stones fans that think Bridges to Babylon or Voodoo Lounge are vastly underrated. But to call any of the above albums (or The Waterfall) the artist's best in INSANE.

By the way the deluxe edition is available on Spotify (free).

I was hoping one of these interviews would be an in-depth breakdown of exactly what changes they made to the mix. Other than EMR, I can't really hear too many major differences on any tracks. The guitar is a lot thicker in Mahgeetah, but did anyone else notice any other big alterations?

they could've thrown in a DVD of the ISM EPK, assorted footage from the recording sessions and album art photo sessions (we know tons of it exists) , even a full or half (or however much was filmed) show from Headliners September 2003. All of this footage exists and was used in some of the trailers....a DVD of that shit would be unbelievable to see. the footage on the trailers ALONE was a huge artifact. Some of that nobody's ever seen, not even on the EPK. Who WOULDN'T wanna watch MMJ record this album in the same house they recorded the first two LPs?? Its a complete treasure.

Mine was waiting for me when I got back from RR.  My daughter brought it in yesterday, fortunately.  It weighs in at over 2 1/2 pounds. That's some serious vinyl.
Listening to the first side now and it sounds great.  The gauze has been lifted off this recording and then some.

En La Ceremony has been talked up so much that I was nervous when it came time to let it ride. It is magical! It took me for a ride!! Some songs may seem to have more touched up than others, but I have absolutely zero complaints. This release has put ISM back at the top of my favorite albums. If you know anyone that doesn't have this album, make sure they get the deluxe vinyl!!!
Anyone have a clue as to how many they pressed? My records are numbered 38,273-38,275 which would put them around the 9,568th set. Just curious how big of a run they did.

I hope big enough for me to get one soon...it's been so fucking frustrating being financially strapped and not wanting to download a leak of a remaster (what's the point of THAT??) . I wanna get the CD if I have to get one on a budget, because I'm going to get it on some format, BUT i wanna get that DELUXE VINYL SO BADLY

anyone else get their vinyl yet? I was in Denver all weekend and the package wasn't in front  of my apartment. Appears to have been stolen  :undecided:

Mine didn't arrive yet either. Or was stolen, but unlikely.

I really didn't know there was anyone who thought of The Waterfall as MMJ's masterpiece.  I don't mean that in a smarmy, negative way - I honestly hadn't heard anyone say that before.  To me it is a decent album where many of the songs are much, much better live, to the point where it makes me wish the album versions were a little more like the live versions.  This is particularly true for Compound Fracture and Only Memories Remain.  Now that we've had the album for a while I have to say that I'm not a fan of the production at all, and really only listen to live versions of most of the songs.

Then again, I know I'm a little bit out of step with most fans, as I tend to think Circuital is a fantastic album, and one that would've been a damn masterpiece with a couple tweaks to the tracklisting.

This is why I'm particularly bummed out about them now scrapping the idea of the quick follow-up album this year where we would've gotten some of the other 24 songs they finished during the Waterfall sessions.  I had a bad feeling that would happen when they talked about having completed so many songs for The Waterfall but then the album came out and was only 10 tracks long.  I know Jim has said we'll get a couple of those songs on soundtracks and compilation albums, but that really can't amount to more than one or two songs realistically.  It makes me wish they pulled the trigger on an all out double-album for The Waterfall.

Oh yeah, and the It Still Moves reissue is amazing.  I didn't think you could improve upon perfection but it's like they magically went in and just made the perfection different.

This x100, I've never gotten the same buzz from Compound Fracture, Only Memories or even Spring since hearing them live! The only one I felt didn't work well live was In Its Infancy. Am I alone there? Love the studio version but live it didn't grab me!

In a complete contrast, ISM2.0 actually took me back to seeing the band live! It really does sound incredible! I wouldn't have even guessed there was a problem with the mixing, I just took it as it was. It's perfect!
