Title: Who's Excited for Wonderful...& the new album?
Post by: Bigsky on Nov 16, 2010, 01:36 PM
I am sure everyone who has jacketitis is very excited for the new album. We know it will be full of pure badassery; we know it will fill our ears with reverb & howls; most of all, we know it will be a new sound from the boys...like nothing we have heard.

We have heard a couple of the new songs, but I am most excited for the old song that will be on the new album...Wonderful. This track of images and sounds has taken control of my senses. It's such a calm song, but much more powerful then I first realized.

...I will never grow older, at least not in my mind.

Wonderful is so...wonderful. Sorry had to do that. But my biggest anticipatory excitement builds from Jim's (I think Jim's?) comments that the album so far has an old and gritty sound to it.

I think Wonderful and Circuital have both sounded relatively schmoove and edgeless. It makes me wonder if these tunes will be the softer side of the next album....

I really can't see them taking on gritty qualities unless they're re-hashed in the studio. Nevertheless, much questions to be asked, many good times to come!!

Oh yea, I almost forgot the forgotten stepchild (that I have grown to love), Friends Again. I can definitely see that one as having a rip-roaring aged sound. Summary: I'm Excited  ;D

I'm extremely excited, something like this whenever I think about it: (http://im-smiley.com/imgs/laughing/laughing006.gif) (http://im-smiley.com) Buuut, to mention one thing in particular, I'm really looking forward to seeing the correct lyrics to Circuital and Friends Again  :)

So I think we can all agree that we are all MMJ fans; we took the time to seek out this forum and discuss one of our favorite bands with others.

But I refrain from matching the blind elation of others posting here. I love this band, and because of that, I think I owe it to them to not be in love with an album I've never heard. While the guys enjoy our zeal I'm sure, I think they would prefer for us to listen to any new record they send our way before praising it as full of badassery etc etc. The sound has evolved from TTF straight through and perhaps it will evolve into a place you don't like. Maybe MMJ isn't about pleasing all of it's old fans with every record. Someone who loved TTF might hate Evil Urges (and I'm sure some did). There have been many posts charged with emotion about listening to the band, and that is fantastic. And while I (like others) am fairly certain the band will continue to produce music that incurs this, let us challenge them (as I'm sure they'd want to be) and ourselves to not rubber stamp any new effort until it's heard in its entirety. I mean no disrespect to any posters; I just think a contemplative thoughtfulness is a good approach to truly enjoying some new sounds.

Basically what I'm saying is that even though we are all fans, it is fairest to the band to withhold our praise and accolades until we actually hear the new record. Let's not assume it will inspire and move us. Let's wait for MMJ to do that themselves.

I hear ya...I think "challenging" the music produced by a band is an important thing to do as an active listener. I'm not so sure we can actually challenge the band members though (unless they read the forum!).

Nevertheless, open-minded listeners, IMHO, seem to have a hard time remaining unenthusiastic about most anything this band has put out. A lot of people did have many a gripe about EU-and I think the band did sense mixed emotions about that record.

Yet, MMJ as a living entity is ever-changing, morphing, absorbing and evolving. I think the posts on this forum that are charged with emotion simply reflect the excitement that comes along with waiting for a new album that will inevitably sound very different than the one that preceded it.

With regard to the songs referred to on this thread (Circuital, Friends Again and Wonderful), they have all been played live several times. Enough times I think to get a good feel for what they're about and a taste of the vibe on next album. And it tastes good to me  :) No rubber stamps or blind elation here.

Sure, we "owe it to them" to not judge the album before we've heard it. But I know one thing -- Circuital fucking kicks ass. I've never so greatly anticipated the official studio release of a song.

Agreed! I'm very comfortable assuming that as well, how it will inspire and move me on the other hand, well, that is the question. Maybe I'm more naive than cynical, but for me it would be sad to not have high expectations when your favorite band, which has produced nothing but brilliant music previously, is about to release new music. But high expectations shouldn't be confused with demands that they shouldn't continue evolve or anything like that. I think they should evolve as much or as little as they like, do whatever they like, go crazy! I'm just looking forward to hearing it.  :)

I fully disagree with most of your post. I have yet to hear something from MMJ that I didn't enjoy...so if I was to guess if I was going to enjoy the new album, the odds would say yes...fuck yes.

...but, just so you understand what this thread is about:

It's about being excited for the new album...and for me, a studio release of Wonderful. This thread isn't about "if" we will all love every track. So next time you want to come in here and wave your finger...crash the party...fart in our air...just remember that you owe it to us...to shut your hole.

Blankenship says that My Morning Jacket recorded for two weeks in June and July, and are "a third of the way through" the album. Five songs are completed, including "Circuital" and "Wonderful," which, "we actually recorded a couple different versions of for Evil Urges, but it never worked out."

QuoteI am! I am!
Me too!  Specifically, Wonderful (The Way I Feel).  Think about it.  It'll start out slow and simple, with Jim on acoustic and vocals, a la Newport.  Then, gradually, kinda like Librarian, the rest of the band joins in.  I wouldn't be surprised to hear some strings come in at the end for a grandiose finish, ending with Jim's vocal exit backed by silence, with mucho reverb!  And, hey, if I'm wrong, I'm sure it will still be Wonderful.

I've seen Jim do wonderful 2x at Newport and each time was forever burnt deep inside.   The way the band came in on it at T5 means this is gonna be one special recording.

Will love to hear it on vinyl, and like all else here, the thought of a new mmj album on the horizon is a big reason to smile.

If any band can absorb, process and react to the collective vibe-wave karmic telepathy of its fans; that band is MMJ!  However, their tribute to us is that they challenge themselves more than we ever could challenge them...this we must consider as fact.  We may love some songs or sounds more than others, but they ALL come from an honest, sincere place.  MMJ long ago earned that benefit of the doubt based on the prolific, powerful, sublime, spiritual, though provoking, etc etc collection of sonic bliss (recorded and live) they have gifted to us and the world.  To suggest that they need skeptical fans to keep them 'on task' is an insult to the intimate connection that mmj has always and continues to cultivate with us as fans.  The lyrics to "at dawn" come to mind as 'loadedquestion' attempts to undermine that relationship and dampen our enthusiasm for what we all know to be the truth (no offense 'loadedquestion' and you probably have your reasons for tempering YOUR expectations, but don't bring us down in the process)!

That said...I LOVE 'wonderful' and 'circuital' and already place them among a loooong list of mmj classics!  I can't wait to hear them woven into the tapestry of a new album!!!!!

Wonderful is on the new album???  If so, that should automatically make MMJ winners for album of the year at the Grammy's.

I'll guarantee that no one else is going to come close to putting out a song that amazing.

personally I'd have to disagree with that. Wonderful reminds me so much of Golden. and if there was a gun to my head I'd say my favorite MMJ song/song of all time is Golden. Additionally, I like Friends Again more than Circuital. Not that it isn't a great song or anything....

Eric, you and Maggie are brave to put Friends Again high on the list of great new songs.  I'd probably rate them #1 Wonderful #2 Circuital #3 Friends Again, and obviously many more would switch my #1 and #2, as I probably will tomorrow.  The thing is, they're so different that ranking them seems pointless (so why'd you do it, johnny?).  Wonderful is the Bermuda Highway and Golden of this new album, Friends Again is the catchy, dance-y pop cut, and Circuital a more epic tune in the vein of Steam Engine.  And who knows what they haven't shared with us yet!

I've seen Friends Again and Cirtuital both twice (but never on the same occasion)... And live FA impressed me more. I think when the record comes out I'll appreciate Circuital more than FA, but FA was an immediate hit for me where as I didn't care for Circuital for a few listens. For me personally, Circuital is a song thts a lot like the bulk of Evil Urges... It definitely took time after the initial excitement of a new song.

Also, Wonderful is like the BH and Golden, so it will probably remain my favorite on the record

The only song on EU that Circuital is anything like, to me, is Smokin...No other song on EU has a build up like those two, besides Touch Me Twice but the vibe and sound of that one I dont think is very comparable to Circuital. Its a semi-rocker, but not a face melter.

What I meant by that is how I feel about it, not how it sounds. I think EU is a great album but if I don't see the songs live at their next show I'm completely fine with it.

I'm listening to the 2003 show from the Mercury Lounge, and Jim singing Everybody's Talkin' reminds me so much of Wonderful...a little less jubilant than Wonderful, but same vibe ya know.

I wonder if it influenced Jim in writing Wonderful??

This part is most reminiscent of Wonderful:

"I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Through the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Banking off of the North East winds
Sailing on a summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone"

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but there's a snippet in the new Rolling Stone about the new album on page 22.

My Morning Jacket aiming for live vibe on sixth album

My Morning Jacket's triumphant five-night New York run in October, where they played all of their albums from start to finish, is inspiring the sound of the Kentucky rockers' sixth LP, due in the spring.  "We're doing it all live, standing around in a circle," says frontman Jim James of the LP, which MMJ are recording in a gymnasium in Louisville.  "When we need to blow off some steam, we'll play some basketball."  They've already got a handful of new tunes: the Brit-pop anthem "Friends Again," the mellow folk cut "Wonderful" and the slow-building Who-like "Circuital."

"We deliberately wanted Evil Urges to feel very mechanical and tight," says James.  "But this record is the opposite - like, how loose and dirty can we get?"

Patrick Doyle

I like that.  HOW LOOSE AND DIRTY CAN WE GET?  That gets me excited.

I believe we need MMJ to perform the new album just ahead of its release at Terminal 5, then release all 6 performances.  I'd find a way to go.

Some one told me (don't know how true it is) that they played all of EU at Ear X-tacy just after its release. I would love that to happen. Id go to NYC for a full pre-release album show in a heart beat though.

They played there, pretty sure they didn't do all of EU though.

I'm pumped for friends again.  I might be in the minority but that song is my favorite of the new shit.  I like it more than wonderful and more than circuital even though both are top shelf.  love that riff.  doobie doobie doo.

listening to the experimental (and groundbreaking if i must say) approach they are taking to playing music live.. i think this next album is going to throw us for a loop. when they are playing music live now it's like they are taking you on a journey.. i just posted this video in another thread but i think it goes here too as a point of reference

this makes me scratch my head as to wonder what kind of dark/sinister stuff is being recorded in that church right now? so glad they are doin' this one live

most people would think that when you say "heavy" you mean like head thrashing, beer swilling, screamo shit.. but MMJ heavy is really intense and powerful stuff that seems to feel like a warm blanket surrounding you to keep you out from the cold at times and then with the flip of the proverbial light switch, changes pace to attack that one part of your soul that needed it the most and it makes you feel vulnerable but in a good way.

That song is certainly...catchy, to say the least.  I can't say it's my favorite of the "new" songs we've heard, but I'm interested to see what they would do with it on an album.  The first time I heard it, I thought it was too "poppy" feeling and I felt like I've heard it done before, but the more I heard of it, the more interesting it became to me.  I'm very curious to see how it fits into the framework of the album, since we haven't (in my opinion) heard a lot of things in that vein from them.

I believe that in some interview one of the dudes said we have already heard 3 of the songs live. If I didn't just make that up then Friends Again will be on the record. I like Friends Again more than Circuital.

I hope that the new CD will be a mixture of "It Still Moves" and the best of "Evil Urges" and not too much of "Tennessee Fire" which is too slow for my taste.

I am also a bit worried about the use of strings as I don´t really like them in Rock music.

We will see, I am little bit sceptical about the new album. I am not so excited about the new songs as anyone else here on this board. Maybe that is because I have only heard
them on youtube and for me they are "just okay". So far they have not blown me away yet, but I had that with several MMJ songs while listening to them for the first time I say, this is just an okay song but the more I hear them the better they get. "Libarian" is an example for that

I still expect the studio album to be wholly normal. I stand by my theory that they're becoming more like Phish in the sense that the studio work is a blueprint for the actual songs on tour.

As such, I rarely listen to the studio albums anymore unless I'm looking for that "album" feel, and then it's usually At Dawn

I don't expect Wonderful to be mind-blowing the album, though I think Circuital has the capability to transcend the studio.

That's not to say that the albums are boring or will suck. I'm still looking forward to this more than anything else this year, and I will listen to it frontwards and backwards, dissect it and pick it to pieces, and in the end it won't matter because I know that even if for some unthinkable reason it is a total snoozefest, it will still be (a) better than most albums and (b) mind-blowing live.

There are only two things that can ruin a MMJ song for me. One is if they for some reason go all KOL and make some super-glossy every-song-sounds-the-same radio rock, the other is overexposure a la I'm Amazed.

Hey, Chodester.  I agree with everything you've said, pretty much.  I think we know the album will include Friends Again, Wonderful, and Circuital, so I don't think we have to worry about the "every-song-sounds-the-same" issue.  Those are 3 very different songs.

As to overexposure, I'm curious as to what exposure I'm Amazed received.  I don't listen to commercial radio for music at all.  I also don't know if the song made it onto any of the charts (do they still do that?).  I have I'm Amazed as my ringtone, its the first MMJ tune I heard (along with Evil Urges on SNL in May '08), and I own about 200 Starbucks free download cards for I'm Amazed (all expired and "worthless").  I suppose its the most commercially viable track from EU.

Yeah, I wasn't saying they sound the same or that there's even any danger of it. I feel like that's about as probable as auto-tuning Yim's voice.

Overexposure is my wife's fault. She listens to radio sometimes, and the ONLY MMJ song the NYC "decent" station plays was I'm Amazed. That's it. Nothing else. They're actually pretty diverse for terrestrial radio, but they still only played that. I think I've even heard more MOF songs on that station than MMJ songs. Then every time I go shopping with her, in every goddamn Kohls/TJMaxx/wherever...I'm Amazed. My friends' girlfriends would say "Oh I love MMJ" and by that, they meant they heard I'm Amazed a few times. So it's all they played at social gatherings. My mom knows it, and she only listens to showtunes.

No fault to the band, it just caught on, and I'm not complaining about an actual guitar solo being on the airwaves either.

My theory is that when you hear any song more times by someone else's choice than by you're own choice, it's more likely to come up when you don't want it to and you grow tired of it. Same thing happened to me to Zeppelin/Hendrix/Doors songs/Floyd songs when Top 40 only spins the same 2 or 3 songs by the band. LA Woman is not a bad song, neither is Watchtower or Whole Lotta Love.

I am to MMJ what a deadhead is to the Dead, then I'm Amazed is my Touch of Grey (I like Touch of Grey, for what it's worth)

Its funny, I was going to cite the Touch of Grey example, which really changed the live G. Dead experience.  I don't think MMJ has had their ToG moment, yet.  I'm so out of touch with the mainstream, I just don't know.

On my Sirius radio, I've programmed in for an alert anytime MMJ is played on ANY of their stations.  It has not alerted me in months.  A mixed blessing, I suppose.

Really? Before I dropped it, I got one usually every other day. The only snag is that mine would not pick up on some live performances on Jam_ON, which didn't matter since I usually had that on. But Sirius was predictable in that sense - if it came on Alt Nation, it was I'm Amazed or Off the Record. If It was Sirius XMU it would be Off the Record or something else of Z (usually). If it was Jam ON, it was OBH/Dancefloors/Mahgeetah/Run Thru. If it was Chill (33) it was Knot Comes Loose.

I dont' think I'm amazed change the live experience. But I do think it serves as the "anchor point" for a lot of people as their main contact with a band that otherwise has no real cross over.

Touch of Grey drew a lot of noobs to Dead shows, especially after the MTV video.  It was a more transforming change in the live Dead experience than the draw of new fans to MMJ following EU and I'm Amazed.

You've nailed what my past experiences with Sirius alerts was.  Maybe my alert setting is reset.  Also, I'd only know it if they played MMJ from 6:30-7:15 am or 3:30-4:15 pm.

Hey, sorry JY & EC, I wanted to keep up with the quote boxes but I started to get lost a little....  :D

Chode, I work some pretty long days at my restaurant job, and they play the same Sirius station 24/7/365... not sure which it is, but it's more turds than caviar, by far.... but the only MMJ song they EVER play is I'm Amazed. So overexposure describes my experience too  :-\  Man there's always one new crappy song that comes on and the opening notes ALWAYS sound like Masterplan, and I almost always nearly shit a brick... then realize it's the crappy song. But they definitely play lots of MOF, "Dear God," "Say Please," and "Losin' Yo Head" are the norm.....

And JY you've got a good point about the 3 songs we know to be on the new album sounding different, which puts it into perspective for me in a good way....

It's been a long day, and I'm pretty beat, so I don't really know where I was going with all that but felt compelled to respond  ???  I also like the ToG analogy  8)

And I'm definitely stoked to hear the masterpiece that will be created and sent to us from other various dimensions!!!  :D :D

Oh my goodness, oh my gracious....

AWESOME article in the new RS on the new album.  No link on RS's website, but man, I am stoked!

Too much to share here, when the article goes live on their website, I am sure a link will come.

And did you know that "Wonderful" as well as another song on the album, "Out of my System" (described as power poppy) were intended for a Muppet project?  I sure as hell didn't.  Apparently the project got canned.  Unfortunate for all....

First paragraph:

As My Morning Jacket prepared to record "Holdin' on to Black Metal", the wildest track on their new album, Circuital (out this spring), frontman Jim James set the scene for his bandmates: "I want it to sound like we're Cuban or Cambodian kids, and we're wearing berets and we're walking through an alley an we stumble upon this band, and it explodes into this crazy singalong," keyboardist Bo Koster recalls with a laugh.  The rest of the band had no idea what James was talking about but launched into the song anyway- the loose, funky first take is on the album.  "This is the most live record we've ever done," says James.

MMJ are returning to the reverb-drenched Southern rock sound that launched their career

It's about time they brought back the 6th member of the band. Nice!

There is a new Muppet film with Jason Siegel involved.  I wonder if some of Jim's songs were considered early on for this?

May 10th?

May 17th?

May 24th?

May 31st?

Damn!  May has 5 Tuesdays this year!  >:(

Yes, they were.  In the article there are 2 muppet references....

Wonderful was going to be for a Gorillaz style project, with a tour and everything.  A huge disappointment once I read that the project was canned.

So, after reading the RS article, the American Songwriters interview, seeing the VH1 Storytellers setlist, and from other various sources and whatnot, we have 7 tracks from the new album "Ciruital" identified:

Victory Dance- "the slow-building, spooky opener, (with drummer Patrick Hallahan working his high-hat with Neil Peart-like sleekness)"- RS

Wonderful- "the gorgeous ballad"- RS

My Morning Jacket - Wonderful(The Way I Feel) (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFyelklEanQ#ws)

Holdin' on to Black Metal- "augmented by massed female voices and what sounds like wah-wah-ed horns — a combo that lands the song somewhere between "Superfly" and "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)."- RS

Friends Again-

Friends Again (encore #2) - My Morning Jacket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-qx2x_5FNg#)

Out of My System- "power-poppy... originally intended to be played by Muppets: An exec recruited My Morning Jacket to record music for a new version of the Electric Mayhem band (the one with Animal on drums), promising a Gorillaz-style tour where MMJ would play behind a curtain while Muppet holograms bashed away onstage. The psyched band began writing and demo'ing, but the exec got fired and the project disappeared. (In any case, the lyrics of "Out of My System" — "They told me not to smoke drugs, but I didn't listen" — probably wouldn't have worked out.)"- RS

Movin' Away- only those at VH1 Storytellers can speak to this, I guess.

Circuital- "The album's least concise moment is the title track, which weighs in at more than seven minutes, beginning with a circular guitar riff over a drum-machine beat, before blasting into multiple sections that came together one day during a jam in James' basement."- RS

Circuital - My Morning Jacket - KFC Yum! Center - 10.29.10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gdcckPsvmQ#ws)

"With trippy keyboards, twisted pop hooks and fuzzed-out guitar attacks, Circuital (the album) feels like the culmination of the sonic adventures the band began with 2005's Z — while also capturing the power and dynamics that have made MMJ one of the greatest live bands of their generation. "This record feels like a couple of steps forward of what we'd been doing in terms of overall sound," says guitarist Carl Broemel, who made a point of mostly improvising his jaggedly powerful solos on the new record, rather than composing them as usual."- RS

Also, note the RS article says Circuital will come in at about 10 minutes shorter than EU.

Here are the approximate running times of the studio albums:

TTF 57:55
AD 74:18
ISM 72:08
Z 47:24 (52:06 w/Chills bonus track)
EU 55:41
C  46:00-ish

I stand corrected, wolof7.  My stupid Windows Media Library added tracks (live cuts) and I missed one.  So, Z  is about 10 minutes less than I originally posted.  Looks like At Dawn is wrong, too.  The original post, corrected and quoted here, is more accurate.
