Hey Capt. - glad to have another fan of The Wire on here!  IMO, the best television drama ever produced.  Loved every minute of it.  I've just got a hold of The Corner, can't wait to start that.

This is one of my many favourite scenes, chills every single time I watch it:

the wire is like one of the best shows of the past decade

Anyone watching Hopkins on Wednesdays?  Riveting last week - they had to tell a family that their 8 year-old daughter was brain dead.  I almost had to throw up.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

Do we have any other fans besides me on here.  I could do without all her talk and updates on the twins.  She can be a relentless beeeootch. I need a Caylee and a Drew Peterson update, STAT :)

Currently watching Season 1 of Little Britain. The show is just hysterical. So wrong on many fronts and I can see why it offended some people. Cannot wait for series 2 and 3 which are supposed to be even funnier.

The boys are taking their act to HBO this fall. I hope they change it up a bit since the show gets a little redundant in the later years. Still, funny fucking stuff.

I saw that. I'm hoping HBO doesn't crap on a great show like NBC did with Coupling and the Office. Just don't like the US version. I'm apparantly one of the few who doesn't like it.

I watched almost the whole first season of Coupling and didn't like it. I hate Friends so I'm not overly surprised I didn't like Coupling.

I find Season I of the US Office unwatchable for any hardcore fan of Gervais and Merchant's British version (one reason is that the first bunch of episodes are carbon-copies of the original series). However, if you skip Season I and start on #II, the US show is very well written and acted - and the co-starring characters are very funny too and not just throw-aways. It took me awhile to adjust but once I did, I find the show very funny. I like the BBC version better because it's more real (often devastatingly so), but the NBC version is funny in different ways.

i just watched the entire BBC version of the office (including the christmas episode filmed 3 years later) and it is, definitely, much realer. also much more depressing.

it's less wacky, which is a thumbs up.

The thing is, we all know people like or sorta like Gareth, David, Tim etc... whereas most of the characters in the US version are too over-the-top to be taken as "real". That being said, that's exactly why the US version works and entertains - this whacky and crazy creative path has helped the show maintain and sustain quality laughs and plots for an approx. 25 episode season (you can also thank an expanded cast). Producer Greg Daniels is a genius: original Simpsons producer and writer from their early and greatest era and King of the Hill creator and producer.

However, nothing, and I mean nothing tops the scene where the truly impossible and reprehensibe David Brent breaks down in tears in front of his boss. I cried watching that very real scene and I was pulled over to David's side for a brief moment even if Brent makes me laugh and cringe on most occassions.

i'm kind of like you--i refused to watch the american version of the office until last year...i loved the brit version SO much---BUT after season one, the american version took on a life of its own (season 1-not that good)--i think the characters really drew you in after that (as opposed to the british version being overall funnier)...i don't even know if you can compare them now. i love them both. HOWEVER< that said, NOTHING and NO ONE compares to ricky gervais and GARETH.... ..on the other hand, DWIGHT SCHRUTE is a legend
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Not too many people do!

As Jaimoe said, the US version is just so over the top. I love goofy slap sticky stuff, but I just could never get into it.

Jenny

i agree it works as a show and gets people into it, but not me.
i only watched a few episodes of the american version, actually, maybe the first season. and it's fine, it's just not gervais.
there's apparently an office in france, germany, and numerous other places around the world.. that dude must've made bank.

also bbc has great ending. the original ending was a little depressing, but with the 3 year christmas special, i think they really tied it together nicely.

BBC Office is absolute perfection.  NBC is pretty good fluff.

I just finished both seasons of Spaced and to say it was perfect is an understatement.

IMO The Wire is 1 of the 5 best television dramas ever...I love the Sopranos like the next person, Ill give Jaimoe his Deadwood, but when it comes down to it, I dont think there has ever been a better show than The Wire.

It sucks that it never got the recognition it deserved. Even this year, when critics and mags alike were all buzzing about it at the beginning of 2008, and still it only got 1 nom for best writing (I think).

Initially, maybe the viewers of interest may have seemed small, but as the show continued and they branched out to dock workers/blue collar labor unions, urban politics, public education, journalism, and even still the changing of the guard in the drug business, not to mention the police force, the show simply hits on nearly everything thats wrong with the US today, somewhat brutally and with total honesty.

I cant say Ive ever seen a show, that was a scripted show, seem so close to the truth and reality

Ive only seen the 1st half of season 5, and I almost dont want to watch the rest because knowing they're never making new episodes is killer. Ive heard they pretty much take everything in circle by the end of it, which is more than I can say for most of the best shows ever.

RIP:
Bodie
Omar
Stringer Bell
Avon Barksdale
Marlo Stanfield
Bunk
McNulty
Partlow&Snoop
Lt. Daniels
D'Angelo
Wee-Bay
Stinkum
Bird
Michael

....and the list goes on....so many great characters/actors that most of the world has never seen

I got so hooked to this show that I watched the first 4 season in about 40 days.

If you havent seen it, you need to. Start from the beginning

No channel in Canada has picked-up Burn Notice (we don't carry USA)and I haven't yet rented Season I on DVD. I can't wait to watch this show because I worship Bruce Campbell's teachings.
