Anybody watching "Life" on discovery?  I haven't yet but I'm looking forward to it.

QuoteSo, Cap'n.  You seen Justified yet?

I have not yet. Considering the NCAA game is tomorrow night, i'll probably plan on watching 3 episodes or so on tuesday.

I also have all of the Pacifics DVR...I plan on watching at least a couple of those this week. How has that been so far?

To gear up, I rewatched Band of Brothers, which I own.  After watching the first 4 episodes of The Pacific, I'm pretty sure I won't be looking to own the DVD.

I've been disappointed.  The Pacific is good, no question.  BoB raised my expectations, however.  Perhaps its the nature of the conflict in the Pacific; the combat scenes have been nearly the same in each episode.  Charging "Japs" mowed down by entrenched Marines.  Its also hard to top the actors and characters in BoB.  Perhaps I shouldn't be comparing the two miniseries.

Somehow BoB is one of those movies/miniseries that has slipped by me and I havent seen. Cant think of another major war movie from the last 20 years I havent seen besides that. Maybe it'll be a good thing watching The Pacific first if its not quite as good then

Cap'n, you give me your address via email and I'll mail you my BoB to borrow.  You just gotta promise to mail it back.  I'd probably send the DVDs in small sleeves instead of the metal box they came in.  You will be impressed, I imagine.  Just gotta find 10 hours.  Let me know.

Band of Brothers is one of the best, if not THE best, war movie/series of all time.

Ive only heard good things, so I think I will watch Pacific first then go to BoB

How does everyone feel about BoB vs Saving Private Ryan??

Personally, I think SPR is a little overrated. Great opening 30 minutes, but thats all I remember.

Im not saying SPR isnt good or anything, just wondering how people who have seen both would compare them since Spielberg and Hanks were involved with both

I like Band of Brothers better than Ryan, although both are excellent. As a Canadian that is very sensitive to US jingoism in film, Band of Brothers has almost none. Ryan did a good job of toning down the over-the-top patriotism too - which ruins films for us non-Yanks. Overall, Band of Brothers rings more true and I do think it's one of the best US war serials ever made.

I'll second everyting Jaimoe said, except that I'm not Canadian, though its only a three hour drive from here.  SPR has its strengths, but BoB is quality, solid historical drama with less flag waving.

I think I might put Inglorious Basterds in my top 10 WW2 movie list, despite its alternate take on history.  I might start a WW2 movie/miniseries thread later, unless someone beats me to it.

Include all the wars and you'll have a killer thread.

Too bad that Canadian film has been historically poorly funded and our theatres dictate what movies, i.e. from Hollywood, will be screened. We have incredible stories to tell, but most of our filmmaking powers have have either fled and or cater to the far bigger and lucrative US audience. One fairly good new big budget Canadian war film is the true story callled Paschendale. However, Canadian soldiers in older movies get often lumped in and overshadowed by the Brits (see The Great Escape and Bridge on the River Kwai). For fuck's sake, Canada liberated Holland and parts of France in WWII and we've never made a non-documentary about this. And one of our pilots shot down the Red Baron and there's only a long-running play that chronicals this feat!

Can we talk about how awesome Justified is?

Thanks.

I can.  Its like a modern western! and set in Kentucky, so we need some MMJ in the soundtrack!  I also like a show on FX where each episode can stand alone, something you couldn't do with The Shield or Nip/Tuck.

I was thinking recently that there's no way this guy would remain a marshall after all the people he's shot.  I think we need a body count.  Not necessarily kills, but people who get a bullet from the marshall (I forget his name).

at least 2 in the first episode

2 in the most recent episode

i'll have to go back to episodes 2 and 3.

I'm waiting for a Canadian channel to pick this up. I know it's produced/written by Graham Yost, who produces/writes and directs episodes of The Pacific.

What about this new show Treme' about N'awlins?  I know a lot of you guys like The Wire, and this is by the same people I think?

I saw a preview and thought it looked interesting.  Does it start this weekend?

it does seem odd that raylan's killing people left and right without any real "consequence," but i guess the cowboy hat has that effect on people.... so, so hot...

(sigh)  :-*

in all seriousness, it's a great show. i think the writers have done a great job of accurately depicting life in eastern kentucky. i'm looking forward to learning more about the storyline between raylan and his dad...

ALady - it starts either this sunday or next, not positive which it is though

I'm intrigued, as well.  Raylan, that's his name!  Yeah, killin' people every week, but keeps his job 'cause each on is JUSTIFIED.  I'm a straight male, but I can appreciate women finding Raylan "interesting."  Me, I can't decide if this woman, Raylan's flirt-mate, is attractive or not.  Lately, I've had trouble with pretty women with angular jaws.

Hey, Meg.  Did I see you back looking for a Birmingham ticket?  So, you're having surgery that week, right?  You're going to B'ham but had to cancel N'ville?  So, is the surgery April 21?  Don't mean to be nosey, just curious.

Watched the whole season of the HBO show How To Make It In America last night..Not great, but good and the 2 main characters and Luis Guzman keep it very entertaining. I thought it got better as it went along. Story is totally different, but it really has the feel of a poor man's Entourage. Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch from American Pie) was great as a guy who went to highschool with 1 of the main characters and acted like a bro.

Looks like it got renewed for season 2 summer of 2011....I'll check it out again

And I just saw Parenthood got renewed for a 2nd season so Im ecstatic about that....that show get betters every week

I found it much more realistic than Entourage and I agree, it got better as the season progressed.
