QuoteAlso had a Miles Davis Bitches Brew. Im not too big on stouts as Im not a malt guy, but this stuff was delicious and sweeter than I expected. Other beer I had was 21st Amendment Hop Crisis....Good stuff as well!  [smiley=beer.gif]

I saw the making of that brew on the show "Brewmasters" on the Discovery Channel.  Bitches Brew is actually a stout 'fused' with a traditional African ale.  Dogfishhead wanted to create a beer similar to what Miles did as he 'fused' jazz with other styles of music.

I'm not a big stout person either, but that brew did look like some pretty good shit though!

I just watched that show last night for the first time!  Good stuff.  They were over in Egypt trying to capture some wild yeast and doing all sortsa awesomeness.  As much as my job usually sucks (technical support for laboratory equipment), I did get a call from Dogfish head one time.  They needed parts for a stirring hotplate or water purifier or something.  Anyway, I mentioned that I had always wanted to be a brewmaster and asked if there was a contact there or any job possibilites.  The lady gave me Sam (the owner)'s email...if I remember right it's just sam@dogfishhead.com or something like that...I saved it somewhere.  Anyway.  Cool show.  Cool company.  I like their style.  And their beer.
We could.

Got a sixer of some Anchor Steam beer from San Francisco. I guess back in the 19th century they called beer steam on the west coast? It's not too bad. Nice rich flavor.

it's a bit more complicated than that, so the brewery says.  what your drinking is a 'california common ale' a type of pale ale who's name you don't hear to often anymore.  it's not certain why they named this one anchor 'steam' but it's probably a symbolic reference to the SF fog which frequently coats the city; the brewery used to the leave the windows open during the fermentation process because the ambient temperature created by the fog rolling in was just right for the recipe.

Thanks to my wife, for the 5th year in a row, its a Belgian Christmas!  Ever since our trip to Belgium on our 10th anniversary, she's been giving me assorted Belgian brews for Christmas.  Last night,  I was setting up for Santa's breaking and entering and noticed the mantle, just as I was getting ready to go to bed.  Not sure when she snuck 'em up there.

Very nice way to celebrate the holiday!  My wife and I went to Brussels and Amsterdam last year for her birthday- both of us are huge Belgium beer fans.  We even made it to the Delirium Tremens cafe which boasts the worldest largest beer menu with over 2000 beers on tap - each with their own glass.  We had over 40 different Belgium beers in just a few days.   Very good stuff indeed.
was some shakin' and some record playin'

Thats the most delicious mantle Ive ever seen. Let me know how the Petrus, Maredous, and Afflinger are because Ive never had those...Gulden Draak is my favorite of the rest of the bunch. My Pops is coming out to visit this week and that always means Belgian time out here as well!!!!  8)

In keeping with the beer themed xmas, here is a link to what my wife got for me  :):

There were a few I had that I posted but it didnt carry over to the new forum

Abita Abbey Ale - 1st Abita Ive ever had surprisingly. Belgian style ale, was very good and only $6.50 for a 26ozer.
North Coast PranQster - Was drinkable but not very good. Sort of a belgianish golden ale thats just tastes too bitter and flat.
Victory Wild Devil - uses the same hops as their Hop Devil, but adds german malts and brettanomyces yeast that is typically found in Belgians. Not near as hoppy as the Hop Devil, very nice balance in the taste, one of the best and smoothest Victory's Ive had (which is pretty much all of them)
Bell's Winter White Ale - fairly standard but solid. Since it took me about a week to drink this case, and more like 2.5-3wks to drink a case of Sam Adams Winter lager, Im guessing I think the Bell's is better  :)

I don't usually drink Abitas too often, but it is a pretty good beer.  I drink it pretty much exclusively when we visit my best friend from college who is a prof down at LSU.

Bells Winter is OK.  Far from my favorite Bells offering.  I guess I'm just not much of a fan of White Ales.  But it is definitely better than Sam Adams Winter Lager.

Speaking of Sam Adams, I was just in my local beer store today and they had these Sam Adams 12 packs in cardboard boxes with just a sticker on them.  I asked this lady that works there about them and she didn't know how they got them except to say their distributor told them they were about the only store in the area to get them.  All the label says is Samuel Adams SAMPLE A Belgian Style IPA.  I'm trying one now and it is pretty damn good if I do say so myself.  They also had a SAMPLE B which is an American Rye I think is what it said.  I didn't get that one yet.  I think I will enjoy a few more of these IPA's  as the evening wears on!

Happy New Year everyone!

Any recs on other Abita's?

Yeah, that Bell's WWA isnt near 1 of their best, but compared to similar winter seasonals, I think its 1 of the better that Ive had.

OOhhh...might have to keep my eye out for that Sam Belgian IPA. Looking on their site right now though and they dont even have it listed!!

DFH did a very limited shipping to retail. I didn't even know they sent 'em out for tapping. It was an allotment like "5 cases for Vermont, 4 cases for NJ, none for Ohio, etc" (I have no idea if that's the real split on these things). My buddy got these up in VT because everyone in NJ looked to be fresh out.

Man, I have been slacking in my beer consumption and posts since I moved.  Part of the reason is that South Louisiana is just getting going on the craft beer, so there's not a lot of stuff here that's interesting (read: all hopped up) to me.  But, that changes a little tonight:

I'm going to a Hoptimum tasting:  Hoptimum
Sierra Nevada's new double IPA. This beer has caused quite ruckus in the beer community and we are the only pace in La to get it. period. no bottles no draft anyplace but the Pub.

They'll also have Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary Grand Cru, Torpedo, Big Foot, but I'm not the biggest SN fan.  I'm going for the Hoptimum.

And then Friday, Abita releases their Black IPA at the same place.  I get into phases where I can drink Abita (Amber or Turbo -- the rest of their stuff is not for me) and think it's good.  And other times, I wonder what the heck they were thinking.  I love black IPAs though, so I'm in for the Friday tasting too.

I tried Hoptimum on draft at the Flying Saucer in Nashville.  I'll just leave it at this: I approve!  I thought that it was very smooth for having such a high ABV.

I really like the label, too:
