Baraka - amazingly beautiful, touching & sometimes disturbing documentary that features nothing but scenes from around the world. Although not a word is spoken the images speak volumes. I'd love to see it again at an imax theatre.

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Dragonboy, is Baraka like Koyaniskatsi?

I think so, I haven't seen Koyaanisqatsi but lots of people on amazon & IMDB have compared the 2. Have you seen it, is it worth buying? The reviews are very good  :)

I just watched an early David Cronenberg film, Rabid, from 1976. "Classic" porn star Marilyn Chambers turned in a surprisingly good performance in this above average and often thought-provoking zombie flick. One scene in particular boldly satirizes Quebec's internal terrorist FLQ Crisis from 1970 - where martial law was enacted by famed Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in Quebec and in particular, Montreal. Some things are a little dated, like the over-dramtic score and some stiff acting, but the core stars are convincing and the effects still hold-up pretty well by today's gore standards - go figure given that Cronenberg remains a pioneer in the horror/gore field. I've really got to watch some of Cronenberg's other 70's movies like Shivers and The Brood.

I've seen lots of Cronenberg - his films are often studied in Canadian university film classes. I'm all over The Brood and Shivers. I love Scanners. Michael Ironside is one of my favourite Canadian character actors of the "bad guy" variety.

Gabrielle.

Tremendous acting.  Interesting characters.  Interesting filmwork.  It felt a bit like a play...

I have a girlcrush on Isabelle Huppert.

Not M. whats-his-name's best but this movie was my wife & I's first date + it warmed me to Joaquin Phoenix.

Hairdresser's Husband - slight, yet very enjoyable french movie. Not everyone's cup of tea but I love it  :)

I just saw Dave Chappelle Block Party.  It was better than most people said it was.  I'm not too into hip hop but I thought it was good. I'm not sure what the message was supposed to be but it was entertaining.

Just saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean...it was decent.  But definitely not up to my standards when it comes to pirate movies.

What are your favourite high standard pirate movies? Just curious.

I was halfway kidding when I wrote that.  I mean, I LOVE pirate movies, there just aren't enough out for me to compile a list.

But I've always loved "Hook" and I really dug the first "Pirates of the Caribbean".  Could you call "Swiss Family Robinson" a pirate movie?  Hm....if so, then sign me up.

 ;)

Ah my friend, that's where you are wrong. There's tons of great pirate/swashbuckler films. Start with Errol Flynn's Captain Blood or The Sea Hawk and then move to Ray Harryhausen's The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad, 7th Voyage Of Sinbad and Jason And The Argonauts. Hook was a bloated failure, although Hoffman was excellent.

I love the old movies that Ray Harryhausen worked on, Eye Of The Tiger & Clash Of The Titans were my favs. Apparently they're working on a remake of the latter...

Ahh, thanks for the recommendations.  I'll definitely check those out.

Although, I will disagree with your Hook statement.  It's one of those nostalgic childhood movies that I will always love. Bloated failure is just a bit harsh 8)

Spielberg has more or less said so himself. Check out some Rotten Tomatoes reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hook/

I saw the film in the theatre at the time, but I can see how it would appeal to kids more than a then cynical 23 year old me. I've heard that the 2003 Peter Pan film is pretty good.

True, but most critics are jackasses.

These are some of the same people who said that "Titanic" was a masterpiece...and I'll defend to the death that it was one of the most boring and overrated movies ever.

I respect your opinion, but I'll always love hook...no matter what rotten tomatoes has to say ;)
