Quoteman I HATED Gran Tourismo- I think it is one of the worst "acclaimed" movies ever!

But I always think that I'm going crazy because so many trustworthy people said they liked it.

isn't gran tourismo a video game? haha. I thought clint was f'ing hilarious in that movie.  Racist Clint Eastwood is so so funny.

"Go ahead, make day.. Gook."  all being jesus christ about it.

has clint ever played a racist before GT?

From what Ive gathered, people seem to either really like Gran Torino or hate it. I didnt see it until a month or so ago, but after watching it I could see why people would have either opinion. It was slow at times, but Clint was just so great that to me nothing about the movie bothered me. I liked it a lot more than I expected going in. One question though: was is the connotation associated with "zipperhead"? I even asked my grandfather who fought in WWII in the Pacific and knows every slang term in the book and he had no clue what that mean.

Zipperhead is a derogatory Korean War term:

Sticky - Definitely see Gone Baby Gone. Very good movie, and Ben Affleck isnt in it, so that doesnt hurt the movie. Amy Ryan (Beadie from The Wire) was excellent, and I thought Casey Affleck was better in GBG than he was for Assassination of Jesse James which he was nominated Best Supporting Actor for (I also thought Assassination of JJ was great, just dont watch it stoned because its long and slow).

As for Yac's other recommendation, I liked Crash a good bit but plenty of people seem to bash it because they felt the racism aspect was overdone to the point of annoyance. I actually saw it in theaters before it got any buzz at all and not knowing what it was about, I just heard it was supposed to be good, and I left the theater thinking it was great. If you like ensemble casts, you'll probably enjoy it.

Just going off of actors in those 2 movies (Cheadle, Fraser, Terrence Howard, Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillippe, Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris) here's some other movies from the last 5 or so years I really liked:

Talk To Me -  Don Cheadle plays ex-con and popular Wash DC radio DJ of the 60's/70's Petey Greene. Based on a true story.
American Gangster - Probably seen this, but it was my favorite crime movie of the decade after Departed
Traitor - Solid international conspiracy/terrorist flick starring Cheadle
Journey to the End of the Night - Nothing special, just a good thriller thats less than an hour and a half. Takes place in the Sao Paolo, Brazil underworld.
The Air I Breathe - I think my memory is a little foggy discerning this movie from the previous one I listed, but I remember this being good as well. Great ensemble cast with Kevin Bacon, Forest Whitaker, Julie Delpy, Andy Garcia, Emile Hirsch.
Hustle & Flow - What I expected to be a cheesy but entertaining movie, turned out to be a movie I loved that was well done at the same time. Terrence Howard kills it, undoubtedly the role that put him on the map.
Four Brothers - Solid John Singleton drama where the 4 Bros, led by Mark Wahlberg, return to Detroit to find out who killed their foster mother.
RockNRolla - Not as good as Snatch or Lock Stock (not many movies are), but still worth seeing.
United States of Leland - Title character goes to a juvenile detention center after killing his GF's autistic brother where he meets a teacher and aspiring writer. Dont remember much about this movie, except that I loved it. Great cast, stars Cheadle and Ryan Gosling, also has Kevin Spacey, Jena Malone, Michelle Williams, Lena Olin, Michael Pena, Kerry Washington.
Way of The Gun - This one is older, but it seemed to get lost in the shuffle. From the same guy who wrote Usual Suspects, and I think most were disappointed because its not quite that good, but on its own its a solid movie. One of the best shootouts in a movie that youll see
Last Kiss - Might lose my man card on this one, but I thought it was funny and it kept me entertained. If you dont like Zach Braff though, skip it.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Great sort of neo-noir, murder mystery movie. RDJr and Kilmer own in it.
Mission Impossible III - You know the drill here. Much better than 2. Cant say its better than the first, but some might.
Lucky Number Slevin - Has the feel of an American made Guy Ritchie flick. Entertaining the whole way thru. Great cast.
A History of Violence - I think Eastern Promises was the better recent Cronenberg-Mortenson movies, but some would disagree
Appaloosa - Sort of finds the middle crowd between a psychological and shoot em up western. Slow at times, but Ed Harris is great and Viggo Mortensen is good as usual.

To narrow it down, Id say American Gangster, United States of Leland, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are my 3 favorites and must see (plus Assassination of JJ). Honorable Mention to Lucky Number Slevin, Way of the Gun, and Hustle & Flow

I'll check some of those out. I've seen a few already but not all of them.  I've seen American Gangster, Traitor, Way of The Gun, Mission Impossible III, Lucky Number Slevin.  Those are the only one's I know I've seen for sure.  Way of the gun was probably may favorite out of that little group I've seen.

thanks for the info about them too, that really helps.

some of the better movies I've seen lately and movies I just dig overall:

There Will Be Blood
Inglorious Basterds
No Country For Old Men
Burn After Reading
The Bad Lieutenant
City Of God
Big Lebowski
Jurassic Park
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Synecdoche, New York
Pan's Labrynth
Terminator 2
etc

I like weird stuff and all that.  I like high budget movies sometimes like the matrix and weird sci fi stuff.  I'm game for most movies to be honest.

This sort of correlates with my sex dream I had with kate winselt, tell me if this is not weird.  okay so like 8th grade or some shit I have a sexy love affair with kate winslet in dream world and then years later she makes the "The Reader" and is a nazi with my last name.  is that not fucked up?  I think we really boned in my dream and that's why she made that movie.

The new Bad Lieutenant or the original with Keitel? If its the old one, Ive seen all those except Synecdoche, New York which I'll get around to seeing eventually.

I didnt love Bad Lt or Burn After Reading, but I liked both of them. The rest are classics. City of God is my favorite foreign movie. I like Fear & Loathing, although I prefer Where The Buffalo Roam.

That Winslet dream is pretty fucked up  ;D...If you havent seen Little Children, check that out. Very good movie, with a weirdo in it, and Winslet in some sweaty sex scenes. Sounds right up your alley!!!

I don't know about that bitch.  yeah those movies aren't my favorite some are just movies I remember seeing recently and liking others like jurassic park are some of my favorites.

I'm sure this has been thoroughly discussed elsewhere, but what did folks think of Watchmen?  I read the graphic novel a few weeks before it opened in theaters, saw it in a theater, then later bought the bluray disc.  I've watched Watchmen probably a half dozen times all told.  I guess you can say that I liked it.  Other thoughts?

I'm one of the few who didn't go nuts over the graphic novel, so I could care less if I see the film.

I never knew the original so the movie probably wasn't as cool to me for that reason.  I thought it was too long and that's really my main gripe with it.  some of the parts in it are pretty bad ass.   if it didn't have titty in it I might now be feel the same way.

Didnt read the comic, but I found the movie to be pretty boring. I usually like flashbacks in movies as well, but they felt distracting in Watchmen. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorshach was great (JEH almost makes me want to see the new Freddy movie, Im sure he's great) and Jeff Dean Morgan as the comedian was good, but outside of them and the special effects, I found the movie extremely meh.

Quoteis anyone else really looking forward to this:
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/predators/

Looks like it has potential to be sweet and little chance of being bad like the AVP's since the got a decent cast for it. Rodriguez producing it makes me hopeful as well.

One question though: If it takes Arnold to kill 1 predator, how are Adrien Brody, Eric Foreman, and a few other people going to kill a planet of Predators?

Hmm... not sure- would make sense that they DON'T survive

O-L-D Terry Gilliam:  "Time Bandits" just got around to it and found it a typical TG trip.

"Book of Shadows, Blair Witch 2"--mostly because it made a list of best horror movies, otherwise it would have remained ignored--meh
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Night and the City
DeNiro movie from the early 90's that was a remake. He plays an unsuccessful & shady lawyer who decides to become a boxing promoter because he thinks thats how he'll finally make money. Since DeNiro rarely ever plays a poor schlub (maybe never?) like this, its worth watching just for his performance. Predictable, but still entertaining thanks to Bobby D

This Is England
Been wanting to see this movie for awhile, finally did, thought it was great...Story was brilliant and believable, cinematography made it actually feel like it was shot 20+ years ago (as did the clothing). I guess the main character about 13 years old when this was made, but he looks more like 10 years old, and Im not sure Ive ever seen a better performance by someone under 16 years old (not to mention he had never been in a film before). Stephen Graham (Tommy from Snatch) was also excellent, and it was great to see him in a large role and more outspoken, charismatic, and in-charge character. Not sure what else to really say about it. Pretty sure DB and some other have talked about this one and Meadows other movies in here
8.6/10

Fighting
For movies of this fare, much better than expected. Didnt realize it until the movie started, but it was written and directed by Dito Montiel, whose only other W&D was for arguably my favorite movie of the last 5 or so years - A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. He brings back Channing Tatum for this movie, who no one would confuse for a great actor, but he's believable in any movie Ive seen him in. Im a big Terrence Howard fan, and although his character grew on me here, he couldve done more with it and the accent kind of bothered me. Main complaints are that a few of the fights are terribly unbelievable. The sequences are pretty good, but I have a hard time to believe this kid off the street is beating guys 100lbs heavier than him or the Chinese's best fighter (who happened to be Cung Le). Also, main character's antagonist and final fight was a terribly cheesy and turd of a character
4.8/10

Eight Legged Freaks
I hate spiders, let alone giant spiders. Watched this last night for laughs, and it delivered! Im pretty sure based on some of the dialogue it was actually supposed to be funny (ie Slither) than just so bad it was funny. Dewey Arquette always brings a laugh worthy performance to the screen and doesnt disappoint. Mother-daughter combo of Kari Wuhrer and an 18yr old Scarlett Johanssen was arguably the hottest family combo in the history of film. Spiders actually looked pretty real and the effects were solid. Pretty good for one of those horror-comedies if thats what youre looking for

Yes. It's an outstanding film and the sound tracking is pretty damn great. Do yourself a favor and watch Dead Man's Shoes also. Just utterly haunting performances.

I actually watched it last week so I forgot about that, but the soundtrack was great. I was loving the Toots&Maytals! What did you think about that kid's performance? Like I said, not sure Ive ever seen a better performance by someone so young.

I'll definitely check out DMS
