I'm loving seeing some of my Yankee cousins recommending some Canadian flicks: Festival Express, Under The Great White Northern Lights, The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terriffico, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.

Blood into Wine - Something tells me Mahg33ta's seen this one.  I felt like it started off well looking into Maynard's urge to create in another sphere followed by the actual difficulties for starting a winery in a yet untapped region.  Unfortunately, about half way through, I felt like it devolved into a Wine 101 class for a bit too long but rebounded well enough in the end with the final tastings.

Ha ha good one.  Yes indeed I saw it - actually while drinking a pair of Maynard's wines for extra effect.   I found it interesting given my interests, but it sure seemed a niche audience (my wife got bored and left).    Some of the comedic bits were good, but the tone was all over the map.    I had a few friends that went to the local Whole Foods wine signing and it was just as seen in the movie - escorted through a long line for a 3 second meeting with The Man.

While I'm thinking of it, I saw your post about music movies.   If you or others have ideas, keep them coming.   My friend and neighbor Sean (who came to T5 w me) have been getting together once the kids are down for a little drinking and music movie watching.   Every other week or so.   So far we've done It Might Get Loud, The Airborne Toxic documentary, The Band Last Waltz, Rattle and Hum, among others...  next up is the Jack White Northern Lights one, but looking for other ideas.   The Wall (for the millionth time?)...

Lots of good suggestions already but I'll try to think of a few:
Monterey Pop
You're Gonna Miss Me
Pearl Jam - Imagine In Cornice
The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Concert For Bangladesh
The Beatles Anthology
Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back
Flaming Lips - Fearless Freaks
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

The Fighter - great film with amazing and heartfelt performances. Christian Bale is astonishing.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE.....he owned that f'ing screen.  Excellent!

Saw it today and I really enjoyed it.  My friend mentioned to me earlier today that Wahlberg was a hard to believe Mickey Ward and I have to agree.  I think he probably worked just fine for viewers of this film who really weren't familiar with Mickey Ward but for fight fans (I had actually seen 5 of Ward's fights (the trilogy 2x over)), perhaps someone else would have been a better option.  Perhaps with Bale playing such a dominant, at times overbearing role and Ward having such a tame personality, they felt the need to at least cast a big name to balance it out onscreen.

It's great to see that in an era where no one watches boxing anymore (except for me, Jaimoe and Headdy ;)), boxing movies still resonate with viewers and critics.  That final fight, though I already knew the outcome, felt so real and gave me chills.  So well done!

Yes, I would have to agree about Wahlberg. Though I don't watch boxing, there are some family links there.....my great uncle managed Hurricane Carter for a bit, interesting stuff for sure, and my father as an 18 yr old ironworker, worked with James Braddock (cinderella man).  So, I am always up for a boxing movie!
I also can't say enough about Melissa Leo's portrayal, and those sisters were absolutely KILLING me!  Amy Adams always lights up a screen, and I enjoyed her character a lot.

I thought Marky did a nice job all-round. He was understated, which is more in line with Micky's personality. Marky was a little bulkier than Micky, but he had his ring mannerisms down pretty good: he trained for 3 years for this role. Also, and this is a BIG also, the Fighter would not have been made without Wahlberg. Ward was his hero and Marky passionately recruited all the actors and convinced a name director to take the project on.  Marky was the only reason why this film got made: he was its producer. Wahlberg also personally gave the script to Bale.

Christian Bale was amazing...and yeah, Micky was such an understated character, a really good foil for all the other strong personalities..Amy Adams and Melissa Leo were both perfect as well. This was a great story..doesn't seem like it will be that King movie, but it was so good...even the soundtrack...

Thank ya Jaimoe.  This makes more sense.  It wasn't his understated nature that bothered me because that was Mickey's character as you say.  It was just that he came across as...well...every other Mark Wahlberg character.

That little bit during the credits at the bar or coffeshop or whatever was great and it immediately revealed how on point Bale was in his role.

Nowhere Boy - Pretty good. Cute flick about John Lennon as a boy and the women who raised him.

Micmacs - Directed by the same guy who did Amelie. Not nearly as charming, but had its moments. It's about these group of quirky people who take down two weapons manufacturers. A little too political at times.

The Fighter - Holy f*ck. Christian Bale is phenomenal. PHENOMENAL. He morphs into these characters and you forget who you're watching. What a fantastic story.

it's a really awesome documentary.  very very insightful and inspiring for anybody who is interested in how real musicians used to make a record.  it's really amazing watching all of them at the mixing board doing the fades and triggers manually.  they have settings that probably took 12hours to setup each time they got together to record, now producers can save it as a file and be ready to record in 2minutes.  It's no wonder so many of these great bands disintegrated with such limited recording options.  anyway, it's way awesome.  Gilmore is a bad ass.
