The Town was okay, easy enough to watch, but its no departed
Agreed.  It gave us another glimpse into Affleck's film-making talents, but it was hardly original.  He ain't no Scorcesse, tho.

The Departed might be my favorite movie of the last decade, so yeah, I wouldnt say The Town was as good as The Departed.

That said, The Town is firmly in my Top 5 favorite movies of last year. I still have some catching up to do with a lot of the acclaimed films, but I thought The Town was non-stop suspense. Not having a great lead performance is about my only complaint towards it. Renner, Blake Lively, and Pete Postlethwaite were all great. The action scenes were all great. And you said its hardly original, but I thought the ending (last 20 minutes or so) was fairly original and it certainly didnt take an easy way out.

The Mechanic - 6/10 - I couldn't stop laughing at things that would happen in this movie.  it was beyond cliche action but if Statham is going to keep making movies like this he might turn into the next action star.   It's really bad, but kinda good.

Agreed!

SPOILER ALERT:

the ending is so fucking hilarious.  at first I was like "they killed Statham off?" and then that kid read the hilarious note and they showed the camera footage of statham doing some kind of super roll between the cars haha.  for that ending alone to me it's worth watching.

I agree with that line specifically. I remember being tense as shit when I left the theater.  I remember complaining about it at first and then realizing that was actually a good thing.  It definitely didn't break new ground or anything but it sucked me in for a couple of hours.

Halfway thru I remember thinking I know how this is going to play out and end but I was fully along for the ride, enjoying it, so oh well...but it didnt pan out like I expected, surprised me multiple times & I give it credit for that as well

Im not an awards show person in the 1st place, but the Oscars were pretty rough tonight. I watched for probably like an hour, listened for the next hour, then watched the last 45 minutes for the big awards. Franco just should not be hosting anything above a high school talent show, but the fact that Im pretty sure he was stoned made it more entertaining, as well as Hathaway trying to save the show because of how bad he was. Kirk Douglas was the high point of the entire show. Besides that, I think the show really suffered because so many categories seemed like shoe-ins - Bale for BSA, Leo for BSA, Portman for BA, Firth for BA, Kings Speech for BP - and all of them won. I havent seen Kings Speech yet, but Im surprised that guy beat Fincher for Best Director (Plus it was a crime Nolan wasnt even nominated for Inception as without direction, that movie is a mess). Since Kings Speech won best director, actor, original screenplay, I almost was thinking they got all the recognition there and Social Network was going to get the big one. Didnt happen though. Really the only nominated pictures Ive seen are Inception , Social Network, and True Grit so Ive got some catching up to do

Overall, Im just happy Inception won a few because I thought it was hands down the best film I saw last year.

I was bummed, as I wanted Franco to avoid making an ass of himself.  But, as soon as I turned it on, I could tell he was baked, so I stopped watching.  I checked in from time to time to see if I could catch one of the big awards, but then Franco would come on all glassy eyed and serious (would have been better if he was in giggle mode instead of trying to act like he wasn't stoned; takes balls to get fried and then step in front of an audience and millions of TV viewers, eh?).

Franco has gone on record plenty of times stating that he does not use any drugs. Granted he's been in plenty of films and tv where he portrays a drug user and he may be just trying to keep a clean image but  I really doubt Franco came offstage and had nothing to do but toke up. I thought both hosts started off abit shakey and unfunny but they picked it up throughout the night. I believe what you saw and are refering to is his baseline presentation. He makes me laugh to beat the band. ;D

I'm not the biggest movie guy, but I just rented American Splendor after finding interest in Harvey Pekar after watching the Anthony Bourdain's Cleveland episode. I really enjoyed the movie, and I found a lot of Harvey's personalities traits similar to mine. I'm thinking about buying some issues of American Splendor.

RIP Harvey Pekar, he passed away during my hiatus from the forum otherwise I would've started a thread for him. American Splendor is excellent, you should also check out the documentary Crumb. I've never been a comic book nerd type but there are few things I'd like to check out along with that.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

The Green Hornet - 3.5/10 - got bored and stopped watching it, then watched the end later hoping it would suck less.  This movie made me get sort of sick of Seth Rogan.  he's in too much shit.

Liked this movie a good bit, arguably Giamatti's best performance.

Machete - 3/5

Fun movie, served its entertainment purpose. However, it definitely falls below Planet Terror / Death Proof.

Paul is always excellent. I'd say another of his best performances comes in the recent Barney's Version; he won a Golden Globe too.

Holy SHIT this movie was wretched. Seth Rogan is terrible. It's a shame, because Christoph Waltz is amazing and his talent was wasted on such a bad movie.

On that note...I'm pumped for the other "superhero" movies coming out this year (Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America), but I wonder if they'll fail in the same way. Ryan Reynolds is such a cheese-ball I'm sure he'll ruin Green Lantern. I'm sick of Natalie Portman's face so the Thor trailer is less than exciting already. I care way too much about this stuff.

Watched Get Low yesterday. Fantastic movie and one of the better ones from last year. It's just astounding that Robert Duvall has only won one Academy Award during his career.

I generally don't really like superhero movies /comic book adaptations. I am looking forward to Thor mainly because of the cast and director. I like adaptations more grounded in reality such as Ghost World and American Splendor - I also liked the last two Batman films.

I think Ryan Reynolds is a burgeoning good to great actor. He's leaving his smartass/Chevy Chase Jr. persona behind. I'm not saying his upcoming Green Lantern will be good, but Buried proved he has more serious acting chops in him.

I read this book not too long ago and am really looking forward to seeing it.  Not sure why I haven't seen it yet, really. I read how it's not uncommon for people to pass out at his speeches.

It wasn't as bad as I'd heard, the amputation scene.  This movie and the real story that inspired it, brought back memories of a hiking trip gone bad, stuggling to reach shelter on a summit in an ice storm, facing real fear.  I never came close to his predicament, but can appreciate it on many levels.

Hopefully you're on to something. I haven't watched Buried yet, but I only picture him as a goofy smartass. Of course after breaking up with Scarlett Johansson he might not be in the best of moods. I'd be upset if I were him.  ;)
