The Big Come Up

Ok so a few of my buddies and I have finally decided to make the trek to Manchester for Bonnaroo this year. With all the rumors of Phish and Bruce flying around, we decided that this would be the prime year to do it. I'm not the biggest Phish Phan in the world, but I'm a massive Boss fan and I think seeing him at Roo would be unbelievable. I know a lot of folks here on the boards have gone before, so is there any important tips/suggestions/advice I should know before buying tickets?

Anyways, I have a feeling the lineup this year will pretty amazing, I feel there's a good chance I may get to see the Boss, the National, Wilco, and maybe even MMJ in one place!

Anyways, if anyone else is familiar with "roo clues" prior to the lineup announcement here's the first one for 2009:

Peter Pan had a good roast before he was beat to a pulp
And the ocean spray that kept you at bay
Invites you to take a big gulp

I have no idea...... :-/

First of all, even if MMJ played, if they didn't get late night it'd be a deal breaker for me. I'm glad I sold my tix to the last too Bonnaroos but I keep holding out hope they'll get better. It's become another version of college spring break for hipsters and indie kids.

And they need to back away from the aging rocker headliners. I'm OK with the Boss, but the choice of the Police and Metallica were just abhorrent. The Police especially.

If they paired the Boss with some more respectable headliners, sort of like they did with Petty in '06, it might  be worthwhile. Radiohead fit. Oysterhead was the real headliner, but everyone there knew that haha.

Google reveals speculation on Peter, Bjorn and YAWWWWWWWWWN from that. But maybe that Peter Pan reference is a Peanut Butter Pudding Surprise.

Do you think MMJ is headline worthy for the 'Roo yet? I'd still take them as a latenight staple instead.

Thinking on that clue, could it be Pixies? They're from a "Bay" area, and well Peter Pan had Tinkerbell

My guess would be the Cranberries... No clue why they would play Bonnaroo tho. I miss that magical place..

Gin and juice (Snoop?) hmmmm....

ocean spray that kept you at bay=coming from across the pond? (oasis?, blur?)

fun stuff!

i swear to god, though, if THE KILLERS headline, i might have to reconsider. i hate that band THAT much.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

I'd say Blur. That would be a MUCH BETTER choice over Killers.....anyday.

el_chode

The Killers could NOT be headline worthy.

I don't see it. I enjoy a few songs, but come on.

Blur? Maybe. I wonder if Mogwai would show up in support of the Hawk is Howling though. Fun stuff.

If it were the killers, I'd consider the festival dead. haha pun is now intended, though it wasn't when I typed it just a few seconds ago.

Also, the clue I found differed slightly:

Peter Pan had a good roast before he was beat to a pulp, and the ocean spray from a westward bay invites you to take a big gulp.

I mean just from the ocean spray I'd like to say ZEPPELIN but the chances are better that the Stones would headline first, meaning there's no chance.

Really, Superfly, you need to just let any ol run of the mill jam band headline. Hell, have UM do it. They'd at least do it right.

If Phish ends up playing Bonnaroo and I would go to the Roo, then theres a good chance MMJ wont be there at all because me and shows are unlucky that way

And agreed, theyre an awesome latenight band

I could live with a 10PM set start though, just as long as its dark

I don't dislike Bruce but to me it just shows where the Roo' has been going.  I mean the Police?  Its great if you like these type of bands but I wouldn't really want to go to a festival where these bands are headlining.  Who is next the Eagles? Kenny Chesney? where does it stop?

I'm with you regarding The Killers. I'd like to add in Franz Ferdinand too.

I'd love to see Bruce there.

i agree that the festival's changed--but it's also good to have a stage for every kind of music; it's cool to be able to see snoop dog (or kanye) and also see levon and radiohead.....etc

the killers aren't even a real band---

superfly tends to pump stuff up and then not deliver (widespread panic last year???) i'm not getting my hopes up but BLUR would be stellar.

I think Kayne's Roo' career probably ended last year.

It's cool to see a lot of different genres and artists at Roo but when they put such lame bands in the headline spots.... Well let's just say I sold my tickets to last years Roo and didn't pre-order them this year..  And I don't regret it..

Well, to be honest maybe a little because I had heard from a friend they were selling day passes at the gate last year... Can anyone confirm??? I would have gone to Tennessee for one night of MMJ no doubt.

Same situation here, also considered going from NJ to TN just for MMJ.

If its worth it, I'll buy them off craigslist since everyone nickel and dimed us last year for the tix.

I like the diversity, I just don't like the "quality" of the acts. To me, not all the acts there warrant being seen live. Not all genres of music lend themselves to being sweaty and dirty on a farm in the middle of the summer.

I've gone to the last 4 Bonnaroo's and a lot of the time I'll use the headliner time slot to go back to the campsite and cook up some food and drink some beers.  There is about 100 other acts besides the headliners and like some have been pointing out, a lot of the headliners I can easily pass on.  I go to Bonnaroo because of the great quantity of music I want to see and hear.  If 3 time slots are unappealing, that's fine.

That being said, I would love to see the Boss again.  I've seen him 3 times and no one puts as much energy into a show.  He makes sure to give everything he's got at every show.  A lot of time you get 3 hours of greatness.

el_chode

The key is if you get that nice campsite. Then you can just chill at your tent and listen to the headliners.

Do you think this clue could be a reference to Snoop Dogg? He's from the Western Bay, gulps gin and juice, and is often roasted

you're making things out to be more important than they are.  if there's good music out there, go find it and enjoy it.   shouldn't it be that simple?  seems to me that you're tormenting yourself for no good reason.

i wish it were that simple, but when you're dropping $200 on tix plus 5 day vacation that requires a 14 hour road trip, it damn well better be worth it. i'm just a lowly student, and often it takes a lot of maneuvering to get time off from a summer position.

As for the Blur comments, there is no way in hell Blur is going to play in the US before they play their big reuinon show in England.....they are just too British.....it would be like if Phish got back together and played England before the US.....it just wont happen, I would love to eat my own words, but it just wont happen
