and now on to this!! :)  :

I used to think 1978 was kinda lethargic, but that changed when I listened to 7-8-78 and the shows in Feb. and April from that year.  A lot of that lethargy in the Fall I attribute to Keith's decline into heroin addiction and general band burnout, but man they were on fire in the Spring and to some extent in the summer of that year too.

Almost every show from April '78 was great, but check out  this rager on 4-24-78

and https://archive.org/details/gd1978-02-05.123360.mtx.set2.dusborne.flac16

Probably my two favorite Scarlet>Fire combos on these shows.

Thank you! ^^

I still love the Winterland 77 boxset best. The 2 discs of favorites I made from those shows is my go-to stuff still. I will eventually do the same with this new boxset once I listen to it all.

here's my post from a year ago where I shared the mix from the Winterland boxset. If the link expired and anyone wants it just let me know and I will re-upload it.

The Normal, IL show was a Dave's Pick and there was a Dick's Pick of 2-3-78 Madison, WI and 2-5-78 Iowa so you can get some really good recordings of those if you find 'em for a reasonable price.

Wait til you hear the Estimated>Other One>Eyes from 7-8-78, WOW, one of the top versions of Estimated ever, IMO.  I'm not familiar with the rest of the shows in that box, looking forward to see if any new highlights are discovered.

Nice comp of the Winterland '77 box.  Peggy-O and Sugaree were peaking in '77, I think, as were many other songs.

I'll go with the "go somewhere that you can". It's hard enough hearing Bobby butcher Jerry songs, change the entire arrangement and just totally ruin it. Add Mayer to the mix and it's an easy pass. I'm beyond grateful for all the times I got to experience GD/Jerry, and happy for those that still enjoy this. Luckily I have plenty of other options that still do it for me.

While I'm not against what Bobby is doing and I'm not anti John Mayer, I'm overall in agreement with walterfredo on this.  I'd rather enjoy the multitude of tapings we have available to us of this band in their peak (mine too, pun intended  :cheesy: ) and savor my memories of being fortunate enough to have seen them live several times way back when...

She kept it cool and sounded just fine IMHO. That was about respect and unity. She deserved that opportunity for what she meant to the band and its history. Kudos to them for recognizing her and welcoming her into the fold.

Ive been rewatching/relistening to this show the past 48 hours non stop. The magic is back and its legit. I believe Bonnaroo signified a major dynamic shift with this band and its fans and haters alike.

Just for some different perspective on Dead & Company - I can understand that for people who followed the band back in the day, that there will never be a replacement for the magic captured onstage with Jerry. But myself - I was born in 1985 and so by the time I came into my own as far as music, I missed the Grateful Dead as an act. As a result, I really never listened to them.

Embarrassingly enough, given what most people think of him, I'm a John Mayer fan. It's wayyy outside of where my typical tastes lie (my top 5 bands are MMJ, Wilco, The National, Pearl Jam, and Tame Impala). Like everyone else, I pretty much cringe every time he opens his mouth to speak, but I am just really impressed with the way he plays guitar. Continuum is an amazing album, and for me, Born & Raised is the best thing he's done.

But anyways, his venture with Dead & Company has brought the Dead music to my ears for the first time. And not only have I enjoyed hearing John play that type of music, but it has inspired me to explore the Grateful Dead's own catalog. And I've been bit... hard. I'm currently running through their entire discography. Have listened to the proper releases during their existence and am going through all the retrospective live albums now, including the Dick's Picks. Just so much great music, and so much magic caught on stage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I get that people who have been fans for a longer amount of time not being a fan of Dead & Company and maybe "butchering" some classic songs. But this act is bringing Dead music to a new generation, and people are discovering it for the first time, and in my mind, that is only an awesome thing.

Varitek

That's a great perspective and I agree with much of it. I was fortunate to see a fair amount of late eighties, early nineties GD shows and also witnessed some genuinely sad performances by the big guy toward the end.
Regardless of virtuosic merits or talent, some of these Dead and Co shows have just been energetic and a nice reflection on how much fun Dead shows could be. I feel like the Fare Thee Well run last year wound up being a reunion of sorts for the old guard and now this Dead and Co tour is bringing this music to a group that could care less about what once was and is more interested in what it is right now.
"Did he just put on a cape?"

beardedwonder

I only got to see the GD twice in my early twenties and late in Jerry's days. 94 & 95.

Those two shows, while fun and quite the experience, were a far cry from what I heard on my tapes growing up. The stage by that time had become somber.

This past week I went to two Dead & Co shows. SPAC and Hartford. The band is having so much fun. They are playful, energetic and revived. Its amazing. Don't get me wrong this is not the Grateful Dead. Especially not 1970-92 GD. Mayer is not Pigpen or Jerry. But he doesn't have to be. He's an amazing guitarist and is putting in some time and only getting better with every show.

Talking to and studying many old Heads these past few months. The ones who can accept the reality, can accept Mayer and can move on are the ones enjoying the ride the most and have the biggest smiles. I for one am catching any show I can.

If anyone is looking for a show to listen. I suggest the 2nd night from Citifield NY from last weekend.
