The DARK

QuoteHas anybody really payed attention to the lyrics to His Master's Voice? They're beautiful. Some of Jim's best in my opinion. I might get a word or two wrong, but this is bascially it.

The holy rolling dice with Christ at twilight
And they hear their Master's voice
They run to do their chores
At Master's calling

Their job to light
Rewrite the bible
For a whole new generation
Of non-believers

The pastor screams out to the crowd
There's even that must be put down
And it touches the soldier boy
He heeds his Master's voice
His life is calling

"Sweet solider boy"
The speaker's pleading
He hears his Master's voice
Do you hear your Master's voice
Calling like the lady siren's call?

Sweet solider quiet
Just starin' at the scenery
And he hears his Master's voice
He hears the call to war
The sirens singing

Out on the line
There's something strikes his side
He sees his inner child
He hears his mother's voice
Softly calling

Spirit soldier's mother, heavens
She holds up a paper cup
And the sound of life and love
Fills her ears

You're only gonna hear what you wanna hear
Do you hear your Master's voice now?

The holy Christs speak twice as nice
But the one that I like best
He sings inside my chest
I hear my master calling

Wow, these are amazing. They're up there with Steam Engine and I Needed It Most for Jim's best.

On a related note, remember when we all thought that Good Intentions was an actual song? Has anyone tried sequencing this song right at the end of Evil Urges? A Smokin from Shootin --> Touch Me Pt. 2--> His Master's Voice combo seems too good for mortal ears.

I would put Where to Begin on that list too. Also, since you mentioned it: before I was able to buy the album, I was reading some reviews on Amazon.com and one guy said that Good Intentions was not only the greatest song on the album, but one of the greatest of all time. And he didn't even like the album that much, which made the praise for the individual track seem even stronger. So the second I got EU, I tore it open and skipped right to Good Intentions. It was a very strange experience.

I hear a couple different words in there, here's my interpretation based off of yours, that's for doing that by the way.

I have no idea what he is saying in that last verse.  it sounds like he says devoted in christ but I am definitely wrong.  you could be dead on so sorry if I'm full of bullshit.

I'm really enjoying this line from Losin Yo Head:

I love that line too.  great album.  I can picture it being great to go back to in a couple years after a Jim James album and another My Morning Jacket able.  it'll age like fine wine.  some of the songs are so well crafted it's insane.  bow to my masters I shall.  monsters of folk delivers.

QuoteI'll give it another listen but right now, really not digging it.   :-/  Ah well.

Still the same?  I've given it 4 spins now and it is not growing on me.  I don't know what it is but much of the production seems to pop ish to me and I'm not finding the depth in the sound that I wanted.

I do find the album lyrically impressive (from what I've deciphered).

It kind of just scoots along and nothing really hits me in the face.  More spins today.  See what happens. :)

Still the same, yeah.  I've listened about six or seven times through and it just hasn't grabbed me.  I was really, really looking forward to this record, but it's just leaving me cold.   :-/

That said, it's had some tough competition in the listening queue this week...I've also been spinning the new AA Bondy, the new Flaming Lips, and the new Alberta Cross, all of which are fully STELLAR.  So maybe it's just disappointing in that it isn't quite measuring up to the others.

I guess the silver lining is that I've convinced myself that Yim must be saving all the good stuff for the next Jacket record   ;)

You guys don't like the record yet you've listened to it a combined 11 times!  What a couple of masochists you are.   ;)
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

;D  The things I do for Yim Yames...   ;)

Nah, you know how some records are growers, and just don't hit you immediately?  I'm hoping this could be one of those.  I'm just trying to give it a fair chance.

I know, several of my all time favorite records didn't exactly blow me away the first time I heard them.  The best example being It Still Moves, my first Jacket album.  I liked it OK but I wouldn't have sold my first born for it like I would now.

QuoteSo is Jim the Sandman or the Brakeman? It's so pretty.  :)

I think Jim's the sandman, Conor is the brakeman, and M is just along for the ride.

Yep, same for me. ISM was their only album that I had for the longest time. Always liked it, but it didnt hit me until all of a sudden 2-3 years later. Needless to say, I havent looked back.

Still havent heard the MoF album yet. Will do this weekend. I wont mind if its a grower or hits me like Tyson.
