the band doesn't owe its fans anything. they don't work for us, technically, they work for their record label. although they have graciously rewarded fans with all manners of awesomeness, it can be argued that they don't have to. they have every right to walk to and from shows whilst speaking to nobody, never give interviews or do appearances. hell, they don't even have to tour. the beatles stopped touring...

that said, from a purely financial/business perspective, it's GOOD for the band to have regular news updates on its Web site for the hardcore and for the casual fan. the casual fan doesn't have the drive to sift through a thousand Goggle pages to find the bit of info he wants, especially if he has nothing to go on.

in these cases, the forum has been invaluable in getting the rumour mill going and permitting members to find out info sooner than the official announcements. that's the Internet for ya. also, LaurieBlue has been incredible in digging out MMJ treasures all over the Web like a musical Indiana Jones.

but coming from the sales part of the music biz, i think it can only benefit the band, not the least bit financially, to keep us abreast of the most up-to-date info. they don't have to do it, but it's a *benefit* to *them*. we're certainly not entitled, but we would use that info to support the band.

1. by finding out about an album release earlier, we can help spread the word for a longer period of time, perhaps generating more sales
2. by finding out about concert dates earlier, we can make sure we have enough money put aside and time set aside to be able to attend. plus, to convince everyone and their granny and third cousin to come with
3. by finding out about a tv appearance, we can all program our Tivos, set the VCRs, stay home and watch, tell all our friends... this is good for the TV show because they will have a guaranteed audience of fans, which is good news to the show's advertisers, who see that this band can draw viewers, and so the TV show may want to invite this band again because it's profitable...
4. by having different merch in all sizes, you are in fact helping your best asset (the fan) promote the band, the tour, the albums, and the hip factor. if lots of MMJ shirts are walking around, it creates a buzz beyond the initial Z buzz that has died down

this is not a criticism of the band, because the band doesn't handle PR, marketing, advertising, or this site. wanting the latest info on the band to reach fans in the most likely place (the band's site!!) is completely understandable. i think the frustration with conflicting information is with the people responsible for the info flow, not the band members.

the first place a casual fan or a new fan will look is here, and those are the people you would most want to cater to. *i* don't need any prodding, and neither do most of the long-time fans. but we're a given...

it is silly shit, and it wouldnt be such a problem if there wasnt an uneven playing field about opinions.  as i said, we all say whats on our minds, just stop taking it personally.  if you want to come kick my ass because i think certain mmj songs suck or im not a big fan of certain actions, then ill give you my address and my list of songs i dont like right now.  get over it.

i was a huge fan of radiohead back in the ok computer days, even going online on IRC and being in the radiohead channel for hours and hours a day.  most people back then, like myself, were 17-20 years old, and even they could handle some criticism of the band they worshipped.  this is the only band ive ever been a fan of where its illegal to say anything bad about them.  i understand loyalty, but not blind christian faith.   ::)

i'm a little offended by the blind christian faith comment, but i'll deal.  i'm very sorry for getting more creepy than i like.  i know why i like defending this band, and i don't see why that equals blindness, but i also don't really give a shit.  

anyhow, i like it here, sitting on my big cliquey thrown (;) wink wink WINK ho ho ho) and i have no problem with people airing their grievances as long as i'm allowed to air mine, and then others can air theirs about those ones, and then further i'll air on them.

but i think the fan club idea is fun and it would be a shame if it got destroyed because i got spazzy.  so as before, just don't damn listen to me, i can be a jerk sometimes (i'm allowed) and do what you want.  :)

i bet not many fans out there know that the live album is being released on september 29th.. or that the name of it is okonokos..

but then again it must not be important enough to post on the bands official website but instead just on the RCA RECORDS! website.

what kind of PR is that? i wasnt getting in attack mode or whatever mode you guys get ill about when i brought up a few legit questions but now i am.

i love this band.. and whoever said that bashing the management is one in the same as bashing the band members themselves is delusional.

We should all be thankful that we can log on to here and get any news at all. If you need your information the very second it becomes fact, then you are a douche bag (and that's not a compliment because it's a hygenic product). Just relax, be patient. Everything's gonna be ok.
