is the buddy system the official MMJ fan club or is there something else?

 ???

yieldgirl

I signed up for the buddy system a few years ago and I have never once gotten an e-mail from them  :(

I do get my 10C e-mails all the time though  :D

do I need to organize this or something?

if there's one thing i can gripe about it's the fact that MMJ fans are very in the dark about alot of things.. there's hardly ever any official news releases from the band and if there are any it's old news by the time they post it... release dates.. show confirmations.. compilations.. TV appearances.. etc etc etc..

.. end of gripe..

Angry Ewok

Yea, I've been a member of the "club" or whatever it is for over a year - and have only once gotten any sort of e-mail from them. It was related to Z's album release.

Oh well, the fans will just continue to rely on one another for second-round info, until we have a solid connection with the band through the fan club, or whatever...

Hell, I sent management an e-mail several months ago about the Boston Pops gig, and still haven't gotten a response back from them on that. I don't even know why I bother complaining about it when I know it falls upon deaf ears.

Speakings of.

Do you think the guys (My Morning Jacket) could give me a ride from Bonnaroo to Boston, to see their show at the Pops? I'd much rather hitch a ride with them (hell yea!) than beg random people for a lift...  I'm serious.

Look man. I'm not trying to be a dick, but did your question/comment to the management warrant a response? I'm sure they get shit-tons of e-mail. I know that they try to respond to as many of them as possible. There's lots of stuff going on in the MMJ world right now, so they may not have had time to respond. Or maybe they got, meant to respond, but were in a hurry and couldn't do it at the time and it slipped through the cracks.

The MMJ community is very lucky. People get responses from the MGMT and the band quite often. You don't get that from most bands these days.

I wouldn't take it as anything personal if they didn't respond.

i also haven't got anything from the buddy system thing...

yieldgirl

I got a reply from MMJ mangement  the same  day I sent it.

If they need someone to do this buddy system thiing, I could do it.

i actually started a thread about this very same topic a few months ago about how it would be great to have an official fan club with exclusive merch and licensing etc. but nothing ever came of it.
then again, i'm sure the management team has a lot on its hands with the band having blown up in the last year.
in the meantime, i guess the Forum is our fan club, and it's pretty freaking cool.
everything sucks. really.

I think it's a super idea. All around. Can we organize something like this ourselves? I don't know the ins and outs of all of it, but I'd be more than happy to contribute in any way possible.

oh corey, you make me cry.  there you go and organize and get that tribute stuff up and then you're so enthusiastic and energetic about stuff.  you're just a swell dude. :)

angry ewok, your post totally pisses me off.  not only is it self-important, but it's also ridiculous.  i've met you in real life, so i'm not trying to start shit with you, but go back and read what you wrote and think about whether or not you were being cool.  god. damn.

does any other band put their fucking email addresses on their website?  is any other band more approachable?  give me a break.  if you're nice to your fans and they shit on you, do you think you're going to want to be nice to them anymore?

i'm just really mad at this because i've only ever seen extreme awesomeness and down-to-eartheness and kind-heartedness from everyone i've ever met in relation to this band, and it really makes me mad when i see comments like that.

okay, let us remember one thing:  the way this works is that the band makes music, and we love to listen to it.  those are the rules.  anything beyond that is extra and lovely, and is not required.

the. end.

darkglow

again i dont have many gripes.. for i too have recieved a response to a piece of email i've sent.. but you know damn well there's way too little "official" news postings on this website.. most of the information we get is secondhand.. case in point i never saw any official news release about the song that MMJ contributed to the second elizabethtown OST... and there's nothing on the website even mentioning the fact that the jacket is going on letterman in JUST A FEW DAYS. there's probably a million minions out there who'd love to type up an official MMJ blurb to post to a mailing list or a recent news page or something..

not bitching or griping.. just suggesting i guess

EC

Quotebut you know damn well there's way too little "official" news postings on this website..
i don't know damn well anything, if you were talking to me.  i don't feel the need to have official updates on things.  maybe that's me.  i find it really annoying, and disrespectful, when people feel they're owed things.  i also find it frustrating all the comments about management and about marketing, and we all know those have been going around for a long time.

maaaaaaaaaybe there's a reason behind all this stuff.  maaaaaaaybe, just maybe we don't know the whole story, and maybe we just need to love the music and not care about things like letterman and the likes.  lest this be construed otherwise, i am only guessing here.  but, what, am i not going to like my morning jacket anymore because there wasn't an offical announcement of their appearance on david letterman?  am i going to ask them if i can get a ride with them from bonnaroo to boston?  why?  because i like the music suddenly i'm entitled to things like that?

let's break things down a bit.
1.  the press page used to be up and was taken down.  i believe mr. riny gave a reason for that.  i believe the reason was that we're supposed to think for ourselves.  i think that's an AWESOME reason, and we all know we can find press on google if we want to look for things like that.  the point was that the press ultimately doesn't matter, what matters is what we think.  i admire a decision like that.
2.  there have been a few cancellations on tours, etc. due to health reasons.  perhaps official news of shows takes longer because they want to make sure they're absolutely sure they can go.  wouldn't that actually be nicer to the fans?  same goes with talk shows.  that shit gets cancelled or pre-empted faster than a gunshot, and the damn backlash from it being official here, and then getting cancellation would be brutal.
3.  as far as the elizabethtown stuff, who cares?  do you like at dawn?  i do.  and if i don't know that there's a song in elizabethtown, that doesn't affect how i feel about at dawn.

i am not trying to be an asshole, i'm just questioning peoples' reasoning behind these demands, and their quickness to judge and condemn.

suggestions are cool, but how come they gotta be given with a bit of shit behind them?

love the music.  appreciate how it's affected your life.  maybe that's a message we're supposed to be getting, i don't know.  i really don't know, but i'm not going to sit around and make shitty comments when i have no idea how the operation works.

ycartrob

I don't know what's up with you idiots, but I am pretty tight with the band. All the boys e-mail me every night after the show and we talk some shit. When Jim was sick, Patrick, Tommy, Bo, Carl and Brucee all took turns driving down to Nashville and tucking me in every night, telling me Jim James stories until I fell asleep. And they'd do things like wash and wax my car, bathe the dogs, wash my clothes, etc... on their way out. Patrick did drink all my IBC root beer one night and there was that one time a couple of my Rush CD's showed up missing...other than that, they were true southern gentlemen.

Holy shit, I hadn't even read that part of the post. I think I drifted off after "I didn't get a response from mgmt".

Gee EC, I swear I can taste the venom in your posts sometimes  :-/

Granted, Angry Ewok's post about hitching a lift was pretty stupid & maybe deserved what he got but I'm pretty sure Darkglow was refering to the universal you, not you in particular.
He has some valid points & has every right to express them without being jumped on like that.
His post wasn't rude or out of line & he even made a point of being careful by saying that he's 'not bitching or griping.. just suggesting i guess'

Why is it that anytime anyone is in the slightest bit critical of the band they got attacked like this?
MMJ are hands down my fav band in the world & have been for a few years now.
Do i wish the news page had more news sometimes (like the poolside interview that I found the other day)? Yes I do..but obviously there is a reason for this info not being posted & I respect that. I'm not attacking CC or the band or anyone involved & neither was Darkglow.

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I always find that really sad.

Me too, and the two things (fav band/questioning things) are not mutually exclusive.

thanks, dragonboy.

kinda seemed otherwise, and if you'll notice, my response was mirroring the way he'd written it down.

i didn't jump on darkglow.

QuoteWhy is it that anytime anyone is in the slightest bit critical of the band they got attacked like this?
i think that's a silly thing to say.  why am i not allowed to respond to things that i see that bug me?

again, i wasn't attacking darkglow.  i was responding to stuff i've been reading over the months.

my anger started from a.e.'s post.  and guys, i still to this day don't understand why i'm not allowed to respond to things that i see that i think are wrong.

yeah.  i think i'm done in here.  i'll go slither away from all this. (<---trying to make light of the venom comment)

peanut butter puddin surprise

It's simple, really.

The Buddy System was intended to be an organic, grassroots network of fans connecting to one another in order to "spread the word" about all things MMJ.  As time has wore on, the fanbase has become quite established in its own right, without much prodding or organization from management or otherwise.   Does that mean the Buddy System is dead?  Not that I'm aware of.

As for the notion that the fans aren't updated, I think that's a perception, not reality.  News, real news about shows and whatnot, is posted here as it becomes available.  I'm not sure why people think nonexistent news, lies, half truths, or total speculation is being witheld from them-official news gets posted here when it's official.

As for the idea of a proper fan club, methinks the idea of charging money (like proper fan clubs do) isn't in the spectrum of possibilities at this juncture.  They get expensive, and the idea of an MMJ decoder ring sent to fans seems kinda dorky, IMHO.   The fan base of this band is the happiest, most natural disorganization of things, and maybe it's meant to be that way for now.  We're approaching year seven in the MMJ universe, and I think that when the time comes for an official fan club, it will spring up naturally, as it should.

Just my two cents.

Most know my opinion about mmj's mangament.  Most also know that there is a cliche on this board who believe my opinion is shit while there opinions ought to be free from scrutiny.  In my absence, the cliche has sank their teeth into other great mmj fans, which is sad.  I'll go back under my rock now, but I just wanted to point out that the unwritten rule on this forum: everyone's opinion matters on this board unless you're critiquing the band (or their mangaement) or if your handle is EC, Conaway (Amelia Bedelia, et al), or Corey (Olwiggum).  If you're critiquing the band your opinion is shit and if you're part of the clique your opinion is fact.  I'll just disappear again so  that the fanboy clique can continue to reign supreme with fangs out.
