jeeez folks, enough already about how bad the venue was, how lame the set list was, and how young the crowd was. This is about rock n' roll man! Get to the important stuff!!

HOW BAD WAS THE CIGARETTE SMOKE???

rugbird

Chicago was non-smoking and security enforced  it.  I hated it cuz it was harder to sneak a toke.

Im with Scott on the strobe lights.  Strobes should be directed at the band not the audience.  I couldn't see shit from the balcony.

DD

i dont see why its unreasonable to expect a non smoking venue to be smoke free......but then again people ARE assholes (see this thread for samples he he he) and will often do what they want when they want regardless of the rules.

unfortunately smoke machine smoke IS carcinogenic in certain amounts.  the smoke machine at sparks back in the day had a warning on the side about overfilling the room with smoke.

um and buddy, the grateful dead did NOT stop playing here due to smoking issues.  from what ive heard they quit playing here because the cops hassled them and arrested members of their crew every time they played in town.  though im sure technically it had something to do with "pot" smoking at least some of the time.

now that the bs is out of the way, and for it i apologize....

the show was ok.  i was a santa and had a lot of fun.  the crowd was kinda fucked though.  the whole all ages thing was kind of a drag in a way.  i saw all of these WASTED kids just actin a fool.

3 songs into wax fangs set a kid in front of us started projectile vomiting....bro, pace yourself.

the cute couple (maybe 16/17) making out in front of us during all of wax fangs set ended up out in the street in front of the venue as i was leaving shit faced out of their minds.  the boy was walking in traffic being an asshole and screaming at his girl while his girl was on the sidewalk screaming her head off.

i saw a LOT of people eat pavement.  the last one was a guy about 8 feet from me.  he landed ON his eye socket.  i heard/felt the thud and everyone of his friends just kinda stood there except one who grabbed the security guy.  they helped him up and the first aid personell walked him past me and he had a knot above his eye that was about as big around as a silver dollar and jutting about 2 inches off his head.

dont get me wrong.  i like to party as much as the next person....but fucks sake people.  ill say it again, PACE YOURSELVES!

the sound sucked...but its the gardens and i expected that.  wax fang was FUCKING GREAT!  they are my fav louisville band these days.  the jacket were playing great.  we left just after dondante though as my girlfriend was feeling ill and still trying to get over her tonsilitis.  we had just seen the show at the ryman about a week earlier though and we got in free since we were santas so i didnt feel like i missed too much.

i gotta agree though with the two shows at the palace idea.  that would be fucking great.  and...goddamn it, now im a cranky old man but i sure could have done without a bunch of wasted 16 year olds all around me.  HEY YOU KIDS!  GET OFF MY LAWN!

I'm fighting my better judgement about saying anything, but here goes.  I was right in front of Jim with only one person in front of me before the railing.  This sounds like it would be kick ass, but here's my beef:

1.  The setlists are really unconcious.  If they read these boards (but why would they?  That would be a little egotistical) they would see that the highlights of the shows have by and large been the older tunes.  i.e. They Ran (which was sweet) and Nashville To Kentucky etc.

2.  Shut up about the all ages deal.  I'm 22 and didn't enjoy the 10 or so high school kids passing a bottle of kool-aid and jack back and forth, yelling at all their friends and holding up their phones the whole show to take pictures, but the older fans have to accept that this is a quickly growing band.  Exposure means a wider variety of fans.

3.  The smoking thing, it happens.  I smoked for 5 or 6 years and as a result welcome the second hand stuff because I don't smoke anymore.  What are you going to do?  I can't think of anywhere in this country where it is legal to smoke weed, but it has happened at every single concert that I have ever been to, and I've been to a few.

Bottom line - this is an awesome band, but they need to re-evalute their setlists and such to please the audience.  I have seen Bob Dylan 3 times, and Pearl Jam 2 times.  They don't even come close to repeating setlists.  That's why they can still make a living touring.  People want to be surprised.  If I go see MMJ one more time and hear the same Dondonte - Run Thru to end the first set (which I know that they didn't do at this set but they have done a lot) and Anytime and Magheetah to close, it will be the last time for a long time.

All this said this is still one of my favorite bands in history and I mean that sincerely.  Step it up a little though.

OR, start your own rock band and play what the fuck you want to. And yatz, I hope the next time you see the Jacket they play Don Dante and Run Thru back to back to back to back. Just for you. For 2 hours solid, nothing but those 2 songs.

tired of the complainers here.

really tired of all the crybabies and complainers

Long live rock, and what it used to stand for.

Good grief,  out.

BH

I just can't friggin' believe somebody would complain about the setlists.  Really?  Seriously?

There are 2000 people on this board (if that really) and they all love hearing the rarities.  Believe me, it's my highlight as well to hear those songs.  But the band isn't playing for 2000 hard core fans.  If you were a casual fan and it was your turn to see them for the first time, wouldn't you want to see Dondante/Run Thru?  I don't want to start another 10 pages of arguments, but Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam have like 357 albums each and have been around for 286 years.  (OK so that is bit of an exageration)  MMJ has already covered about 75% of their album catalog in a matter of 15 or so shows.  They are known for doing covers, just not in the last 15 shows!

If they didn't play Dondante tonight, there would be 20 people who would come on here and complain.  Wah! Wah! Wah!

Having said all that, you have every right to complain all you want, but that's just no way to go thru life, ya know?
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Seems to me the biggest crybaby and complainer around here is you Tracy.  People ought to be able to have an opinion even if that opinion is that an mmj experience they had that was less than orgasmic.

I think the difference in me is I'm just having a rip roarin', good ol' time and could give a monkey's about any of it.

now, just where did I leave my disclaimer...

im sorry to disagree but most bands play the same or similar sets within a given leg of a tour.  im sure there are bands that vary, but every time ive gone out on multiple dates of the same leg of many of my favorite bands tours ive seen close to if not exactly the same show each night.  its not their fault im a super geek who follows them from town to town.  the sets are set up to be played to a different audience each night.  though im sure the jacket played a lot of the same songs i seriously doubt the set list that night was the same as the setlist the year before which was the last time they played in louisville.

also.  im a cranky old man and will complain about them thar joo-vee-nile dee-ling-kwits as muchn as i do see fit.

but that being said, all complaints aside, i wish there were more chances in louisville for all ages kids to see shows.  though, responsibly.  maybe lv gardens wont get in trouble but kids getting wasted at your venue CAN get the venues, promoters, and bands in trouble.  it just sucks when a minority fucks things up for the majority thats just there to enjoy the show.

Yikes your a feisty one.  As a matter of fact I do have my own band, we do play whatever we want, and I do not think that it is unreasonable for me to air my opinion, be it complaining, whining, sobbing, whatever you want to call it.  All that I am saying is that it didn't live up to my expectations.  That's my opinion and that's all that I want it to be.  It is my understanding that with this be an open forum, I am allowed to, as a registered user, voice my opinions on a band who I have given a good deal of money to in the past couple of years.  I am happy that you would like them to play Dondante and Run Thru for 2 hours just for me.  I honestly feel that that would be quite interesting.  So sorry for offending you, if that is in fact what I did.  You did not really state a position on what I said other than saying that you hope the oposite occurs for me.

As far as my reference to Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam, yeah they have been around for a lot longer, yeah they have a lot more songs, what's wrong with hoping that MMJ will espire to the level of established professional touring acts such as these.  I was up front the past two years at Bonnaroo and was literally blown away both years, '06 being the best show I have seen in my entire life...did I mention I've seen Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Mars Volta, Radiohead.  I have seen what I think this band can do, and I have played live music for six years and understand that everyone has bad nights.  All that I am saying is that I thought this was an off night for them.  I didn't ask for my money back.  I didn't say I was sorry I went.  I was honestly quite happy that I was there and had a pretty good time.  I honestly do not know why it is a big deal that I did not enjoy the show to whatever standard you feel I should have.  This is a great band that I think had a bad night.  I think.  I think.  Ok.

P.S. - I enjoyed that you referenced The Peanuts in light of your disgust with me and the other whiners, and my Icon in particular.  Have a wonderful day.

I'm in it for the soulful experience, the reception and expulsion of energy and vibes, the explosion of joined commnunity. I'm in it because these guys can make me briefly escape from the chaotic lives of the homeless people I work for, the EVERY DAY grind. They release and capture my soul.

I am not in it to critique the set lists or "profesionalism"of the band, wondering if moves A,B,C and D will merit critical worth and hoping the band will "step it up". I see what these guys put into their music every time they take the stage and that's enough for me. And it's that simple for me. That's why I'll drive a couple of hours to see them play THE EXACT SAME SET LIST on consecutive nights because it's from the soul. It means something. What gets me is that what they leave on the stage is just not enough "product" for some folks.

Man, we saw Van Halen in 85 in Jackson, Mississippi and then 3 weeks later in Dallas. The exact same show. The exact same Diamond Dave saying, "Look at all the people heeeere tonight" at the same time, and then the "I forgot the fucking words" at the same point in Unchained. Word for word, song for song, bass toss for bass toss (Michael Anthony tossing his Jack Daniels bass from the top catwalk). It ain't for everyone, but I love it. And they did pretty good touring like that.

I'm old school. Come with your shit and rock. No whining, no crying, no complaining. Just rock out, cheer, share, and go the fuck home.

Pete Townsend talks about the critics. He talks about how those critics will gently say (with hands clasped together), "The show must go on" and "all those fans will be so disappointed if the show doesn't go on". Pete says, "I never played for those folks anyway, I played for the one's who were saying (pounds fist on table) 'You got to go on man! Otherwise, all those kids, they'll be finished! They'll have nothing to live for! That, that, man, is rock and roll.'"  I'm one of those.

Setlist? Who cares, just play the music in any order you like and I will surely LOVE it!  :)

My Morning Jacket at Louisville Gardens: Initially, the homecoming spirit was conjured more by the Thanksgiving-eve crowd than the Louisville-bred MMJ. You could sense its seasonal mood early as a pack of makeshift Santas roamed through the venue. One of them even chose to play air guitar on a surfboard-sized candy cane. MMJ chieftain Jim James let nearly 80 minutes of the two-hour performance slip by before even addressing the revelers. But once the ice was cracked, he seemed humbled that his band was headlining the 5,000-seat Gardens, a venue where he once saw Megadeth as a rock 'n' roll lad. With the chiming, echoing, U2-style guitars of One Big Holiday serving as the show opener, MMJ called upon eight of the 10 tunes from last year's album, Z. The fun ran from the reggae charge of Off the Record to the bubbly electric atmospherics of Wordless Chorus to 15 minutes of Dondante, when the show's psychedelic ambience reached its zenith. James' singing, which is used as much for color in MMJ's textured music as a poetic device, revealed more range but less definition than on the band's recordings. But guitarist Carl Broemel proved to be MMJ's ace-in-the-hole player at encore time by exploring the country contours of Tonight I Want to Celebrate With You on pedal-steel guitar before switching to saxophone for Nashville to Kentucky. The house rocked, the hometown crowd was delighted and holiday fun ensued.

You forgot get on the band's message board and chastize other fans that didn't have the same experience as you.  If it is really all about the music for you what does it matter what other people think?

For someone who claims to be about, "No whining, no crying, no complaining" you are doing a lot of bitching.

(insert Tracy's witty response that doesn't answer my question.)

I bitch about the complaining and the whining, true. And a lot of the chastizing I do is tongue in cheek. (you know, we've been down this road before and it's exactly the same as before. I just hope you can handle it and don't run away for 6 months this time. We can agree to disagree, just stick around. For what it's worth ).

And it really doesn't matter if some people think performances are lame, or too crowded, or smoky, or muffled and it doesn't matter what I think. Is that a good enough answer? It doesn't matter. That's why I get so suprised when people get their panties in a wad.
Can you dig that?

It's a message board for God's sakes people! get over it.

I don't come here to be critical of the band, I come here to share joy with other fans. I have made friends here with people and we have broken bread at each other's houses and slept under each other's roofs, solely because of The Jacket and this board. I am so happy when these guys play that I don't care about much else. That's how I roll. But if you come here and be critical of the band, I'll take jabs at you. And good Lord, jab back.
