Quotesave the glowsticks for the Widespread Panic shows.

Awww...Penny. Let's not make gross generalizations. When the band and fans are subject to painful air attacks at any moment, I don't think glowsticks are welcome either. If used at the right time to enhance peak experience in the crowd, that's another story.FYI: Panic has a song called 'Big Wooly Mammoth' in which there's a line of lyrics stating, 'someone throw me a fire!' and back in the day the crowd would throw their lighters on stage (glowsticks in recent yrs.). The band would turn their backs, hide behind the percussion set-up or the curtains, etc. and this was a fun part of the show. Unfortunately, kids started using them more and more and would toss them at the band at random moments even when they didn't play this particular song...deeming them ineffective and just fucking rude. WSP started leaving this line of lyrics out and then cut the song out completely after a particular incident where David Schools(bass) was hit in the face. He was quoted as saying, "glowsticks are gay". Anyway, much respect to you on this board penny...I just don't like the connection between idiot fans and their toys and a powerhouse band like Panic.  ;) Now you know the bands' stance on this shit as well as a seasoned fan. Not to start an MMJ>glowstick>WSP>Drums>WSP>glowstick>MMJ sick ass sandwich thread or anything. ;D
BTW: LOUISVILLE! LOUISVILLE!  :o

i just read this post again..thanks for the insight--didn't want to imply anything about the band--just an observation about the fans--but that's good to know how you and the band feel about it
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

QuoteI was lucky enough to see both the Nashville and Louisville shows this weekend.

Mayhap I'm getting a little long in the tooth, but I found the Louisville crowd to be one of the most disrespectful gathering of people ever.  I was about four people from the rail, stage left, and was surrounded by people who continually talked throughout the performance, urinated on the ground, pushed, shoved and couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the music, let alone offer applause or appreciation for a MAGNIFICENT SHOW.

To the jerk (yeah, you in the checkered shirt) who purposely threw a glowstick that hit Jim in the collarbone during "Touch Me...II," then laughed hysterically, why?  Ditto to the bonehead standing to my right.
Is this *the* Sassbox? The one I love for posting spunky-to-the-truth wisdom where ever she goes?

As far as glow sticks go--and I know I'm in the minority here--I hate 'em. I want them banned. I hate getting pelted in the back of the head with them while I'm entranced by what's going on on stage. I hate watching band members get pelted with them while they are trying to create the music we all come from afar to see. If you want to hang on to one and wave one around (without whacking someone in the face) fantastic! Go for it! I guess I just have a general dislike for the use of any sort of trajectorial objects at shows.
Because if there's one thing that goes well with shooting zombies it's a Dolly Parton cover-el chode

LowDownLuvDawg

ya glowsticks are fine when they aren't thrown at the band... as far as the crowd went I didn't really pay attention to them... if they weren't dancing i danced until they danced or got out of my way... during the epic throwdowns i jumped until i reached the point where everyone was jumping... it was //AN EPIC DREAM\\

It's me.  You need to go see the pic I posted in that other place. :)

I'm with you on the glowsticks...I find them annoying and I really don't understand the appeal, but I respect that some folks like them.  Why anyone would pick one up with the sole intention of hitting someone is beyond me.  I'm embarrassed for people who don't know how to conduct themselves in public.  BTW, the person who urinated on the ground was a girl.  Idiocy knows no sex!
God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

ARoush777

Glow sticks would be fine if idiots didn't handel them... it's a very cool thing to see hundreds of them flying in the air but it's a very disrespectful thing when they are hitting the performers.  I saw two-tone get hit and mouth the words "thank you so much".... i'm pretty sure that was scarcastic.  Also, I saw alot of people there to get trashed rather than being there for the mind-blowing performance.

It sucks you were surrounded by these idiots but a few feet away we had a completely different experience sharing the night with some new friends who were intelligent appreciative fans there to enjoy the band while not throwing a single object at them.I even noticed wave after wave of thunderous applause and countless rows of fans hypnotized by the magic with their hands in the air giving praise to all things Jacket.Thankfully our spot had no urinating fans male or female and the fans in our area neither threw objects nor taunted the band.
The things you experienced were the result of a few fools who somehow worm their way into every single concert in every single town and calling them "The Louisville Crowd" when there were 10,000 people there is maybe a bit presumptive.I don't know what the Louisville crowd ratio is for idiot vs non idiot but I doubt it's higher than any other city.I saw a couple of people who had one too many which is usually the norm at large musical gatherings but overall I thought The Louisville Crowd did our boys proud.Actually three of those multi talented guys onstage are The Louisville Crowd and I hope you won't let the behavior of a few change your view of Louisville and it's terrific people.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

People talked a lot during every big show I have been to (and they were sure talking in Nashville Friday night during the quiet ones, to the point I was thinking why they came in the first place) and people do stupid shit in every city; the bigger the crowd, the more stupid shit. I saw MMJ in Nashville in 2003 in front of like 100 people and some drunk dumb shit stopped the show completely by telling Jim how stupid he looked while he played his acoustic set with as close to silence in a bar as you can get.

I also had a guy spill an entire cup of draft beer on my head at the 2nd Day of Rock and Roll at the Superdome in 1981 during The Eagles playing In The City and then he tried to start a fight with me.

I got more...

I have been to 3 shows in Louisville (MMJ at Headliners/MMJ opening for Wilco at The Palace/Built to Spill at Headliners) and my wife and I always have a great time and are treated wonderfully by the fine people of Louisville. For what it's worth  :)

I always keep my eye on Pollstar Louisville just to find an excuse to come back.

Never have I experienced a live show even close to the caliber of what I witnessed last night and my body and mind are still numb and somewhat shocked by what I felt, saw, and most of all HEARD!!!!!
I think I've figured out the reason behind this experience you had to feel to understand.I've seen many shows but never before have I been such an intricate part of the show.I've never felt more embraced or touched by a live performance,I've never felt so embraced and loved by a band, and I've never seen five guys become one and then reach out and pull the crowd into a mind boggling soul humping orgy with them and all 10,005 of us combusting for three funfilled hours.

Concert doesn't really fit what we experienced and I'm writing Webster's tomorrow and suggesting they make a new word for what we all felt at the dusty dirty core of our souls.I was thinking "SOULATIO" or possibly "SPIRITLINGUS" because last night if you were within earshot of the magic you got vibrations
in places you didn't know you had.
I guess this post could seem weird and overly passionate to a MMJ virgin but it's actually a pale weak attempt to verbalize something there are no words for.
I thank them all for what they gave us and I only hope we gave them 1/10th of it back.I truly LOVE this band and I don't just mean their songs but I mean them. The greatest singer/writer/performer in history, the greatest example of what you can do with a bass if you really want to,the best drummer since......................oh yeah I almost forgot there is and has NEVER been a better drummer, the best "I can play anything" man doing things with strings that are illegal in 48 states and lastly our beautiful Bo tickling the ivorys and 10,000 people similtaneously without ever moving a muscle. They are rock GODS and they are also the most humble appreciative band I've ever encountered. They are what bands should be but rarely are. They are the epitamy of perfection and thankfully they are sharing time and space with us.I thank them,I respect them, and I fall on the ground on my face when I hear them.Perhaps I've rambled on too long, perhaps I should have chosen two simple words for My Morning Jacket...........
Thank You.Somehow that doesn't seem like enough but what can you really say about something you can't explain and something you've never felt before.Last night they changed my 42 year perception of music and what it is and is not.A grassy field became the foundation of something bigger than the sum of it's parts.Reality as we know it went up in flames

I know what you mean (seriously, even the parts I don't understand).

It's unexplainable

After 30+ years of concerts, I'm well aware of the fact that the Idiot Factor exists everywhere.  My comment was not meant to malign the city of Louisville or the crowd in its entirety, only those punks  surrounding me.

People who don't have the common decency to honor the musicianship they are so privileged to witness should stay the hell home.

It has nothing to do with age, its about making assumptions. THere were 10,000 people there, you had contact with maybe 30 people, and you say "the Louisville crowd". 30 people dont represent an entire crowd, especially one 10,000 strong. I was against the barrier stage left and experienced none of what you're talking about. Sure there was some pushing and jockeying for position, but thats part of every general admission concert at every venue in the country. Its not inherent to Louisville.

Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

Sassbox

I'm not making any assumptions -- I witnessed some bad behavior by what seemed to be an inordinately larger number of individuals than I've seen at concerts past.  I do apologize if I've offended anyone from Louisville, but I assumed it was obvious that I didn't feel the other 9,999 people in attendance were all in poor form, only those I seemed to come in to contact with throughout the night.  And who even knows if they were from Louisville...I traveled from out-of-state to see the show.  Maybe they were New Yorkers!  ;)  I'm kidding!

It is hard to see the well behaved fans when a bunch of idiots are relieving themselves while hurling objects at the band.It was the moron's fault for hurting the image of the crowd not yours.I'm sorry you had to deal with the poorly raised subhumans. :(

Yeahhhhhhh!  Nice, man.  Nice.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

YouAre_GivenToFly

Me, j_rud, and a friend flew in from Philly for this show that morning. Read his post to get the basic idea of our today.

Somehtings that impressed me were the cleanliness and friendliness of all things Louisville. Great city, and I envy anyone who gets to call it home. This show seemed like a big deal for the city, the mayor showed up!

I was in the front row in front of Carl the entire show... I'll put up my pictures later... need to catch up on some sleep now.

COBRA!  :D
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

Ringo

So hey, anybody know who the trio were who played between the Leopard Percussionist songs were? Tah.

Also, this was just about the best gig ever. Simple as that.

Wasn't you wearing the Blue Phillies shirt by any chance was it?

JacketGal

How do you put this experience into words. Well, man, I just can't!

I've been trying, ChiefOkonoko's been trying. All we could do on the drive back to Chicago is say random things like, "OH, YEAH, How GREAT was it  TO HEAR HEART BREAKIN MAN?  WHERE TO BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy HELL>>>>DONDANTE!!!>>>the PUPPETS>>>the BEAUTIFUL NIGHT...the bridge as the sun was setting....the MOON! THE CAPE!!. Ok, let's stop talking now --- we'll listen to some Evil Urges, baby!"

Loved the show beyond words. Nice to see some of ya again and to meet some new folks too. Jacketeers = the real deal!

:D :D :D
But seein you feels good, and its always understood.
That anything much sweeter would make me die.

Angry Ewok

We were discussing the crowds and the glow sticks over pizza and booze after the Louisville show... All of us are obviously only speaking for a little bubble in a much larger crowd --- but our party of eight felt the atmosphere at Nashville was more aggressive, dare I say violent, compared to the usual MMJ show.

There was crowd surfing, and you could tell the crowd in our little area was irritated by it and just trying to dump the guys onto their heads. Result of that was a couple of folks in my party got hit/kicked/elbowed by accident. There was also an attempt at a moshpit, which thankfully didn't really work. The glowstick lobbing was fun to begin with, but we all know the difference between getting hit on the top or back of the head by a glowstick that was lobbed in the air, versus getting hit by a glowdart that was thrown laterally, purposefully. It looked like Jim, Carl, and Tommy got nailed in the face a couple of times, too. I cringed every time - kept thinking of that picture of David Bowie with a lolipop in his eyeball. I just wanted to be like, "C'mon, dudes... stop trying to hurt people and just enjoy the show."

The atmosphere of the Louisville show was like any other show, I thought - we moved up closer twice, when there was too much chatting, but we eventually found a great little spot (out of range of the glowdarts!)... and that was about all. Apparently the lines were so bad that people felt compelled to piss into the river, but I can't say I blame them.

Both shows were facemelting and orgasmic. After each show we were sort of wandering around like lost children... I'm pretty sure Louisville was better than Nashville - better atmosphere, better crowd, better setlist. I will probably be flip-flopping on this issue for weeks to come, though. I wish I could just stay at those places, forever.

Highlights...

How Do You Know? (We are so lucky to have heard this one live!)
Cobra (Awwweesommeeeeeeeeeee)
Balls to the Walls Run Thru / One Big Holiday / Extra long Dondante / Steam Engine / Highly Suspicious

I guess I could just paste the setlists and that'd speak for itself.
--- and that's 2 real 4 u.
