Title: Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes, Mystic Valley Band etc.
Post by: SaraBananaBear on Jan 05, 2011, 05:21 AM
Couldn't seem to find the old thread, but then again, I'm not really forum savvy... ;) So a new thread, for the love of Bright Eyes, Mystic Valley Band, Desaparecidos and pretty much all music by Conor Oberst. :)

Bright Eyes - Shell Games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLAMg6o5w2s#)

Shell Games! I love it, bring it on Bright Eyes, bring it on! Pre-ordered the album + some more stuff... can't wait! Now all I need is more tour dates in Europe. Recent quote about the album:

QuoteThe album is about humanity. That's sort of the crux of that matter — we're all human beings and these imaginary lines and borders are really silly when you think about work and families and the need for people to survive and carry on with their lives. It seems so basic to me. It's not new, but this new wave of xenophobic, barbaric nationalism is totally scary and something that needs to be stopped in its tracks immediately. This is the opposite of what I was told America was all about.

Completely agree with Mr. Oberst, also very excited to hear the rest of the album based on this:

QuoteI wanted to make a record that was modern-sounding and steer clear of some of my tendencies, melodically. We're over the Americana, rootsy, whatever that sound is. People say country, but I never thought were very country at all. But whatever that element is or that aesthetic is, I guess it's worn a little thin for me these days. So we very much wanted it to be rocking and, for lack of a better term, contemporary, or modern.

And just because it relates to the boards interest (ish):
Quote
M. Ward and Jim are like two of the people I admire most in the musical world, so to get a ringside seat to see them in action making a record (...) and the way they approach arranging and recording was just, it was really fantastic and I think I am better because of it. I learned things I can take with me onto new records.

Woop, woop!  :)

And while we're at it, this one is a bit old, but just beautiful:

Dntel - Breakfast In Bed (ft. Conor Oberst) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epR37msATec#ws)

*all quotes by Conor Oberst, december 2010 ;)

I got pre sale radio city tix and they were $25, bit I'm pretty sure the regular prices are 50ish. First time I saw bright eyes the tickets were 8 bucks. Those were the days.

I know! Good stuff! One For You, One For Me and A Machine Spiritual (The People's Key) were briefly on YouTube after being played on a radioshow, but Saddle Creek requested that they'd be taken down. I suppose you could still find them if you really wanted to though, but I'm trying to save it all for the release day. I admit I did listen to them once or twice while they were still up though...  ;) One For You, One For Me was instant love for me, love the lyrics (if you wanna sneak a peak they can be found here: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858855444/ (http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858855444/)) Found a very interesting comment there as well:

QuoteThe titles of the tracks on the album all seem to reflect upon varying beliefs - Rastafarian (Haile Selassie), Wicca (Triple Spiral), Buddhism (Beginner's Mind), Judaism/Christianity (Ladder Song - "Jacob's Ladder" possibly?), and then a world where machines are equal to/rule/save humankind (A Machine Spiritual). Without knowing any of the lyrics as of yet to any of these songs, I'd guess that maybe different beliefs are being divvied up here with 'one for me, one for you'.

The music kind of reminded me of Digital Ash if anything and I really loved Digital Ash to bits, so that fits me perfectly. I don't suppose the drums are very much like Gold Mine Gutted, but that's what it reminds me of, to me it kind of had a similar feel (if I remember correctly).

People's Key lyrics here: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858855346/ (http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858855346/) and love that one as well, don't know what it reminds me of, but I think on all three tracks Conor seems to use his voice in a different way, I can't really describe it well enough in English, probably not even in Swedish, but it's cool, some more evolution  :)

Enos You Idiot!  Ha!  Roscoe P. Coltrane is the man.

Sara, I used to be Bermuda Hitchhiker when I first joined.  Bermuda HWY was my favorite song at the time.   I wanted to catch a ride and follow my "silly dreams" or something like that.  (Voice in head - "How'd that work out for you, Dave?") Everyone started abbreviating it to BH so I just changed it.   Maybe I'll go back for awhile for old time's sake....

Just got my tickets for First Avenue in April!  Yay!  (Only 3 months to go..... :-\)  Now I just have to try to keep myself from listening to the leak....heh heh.

There was a small article on the new album in Rolling Stone a few weeks ago, complete with a lovely new Conor picture  :)  It talked about how reggae (?!) influenced The People's Key and how they're working to move away from the Cassadaga-y sound.  Also, more spoken word!

Me likes this little ditty:

But the standout contributions came from El Paso musician Denny Brewer, a sixtysomething biker and New Age shaman Oberst met while recording in Texas — and who adds mind-bending spoken-word passages. Brewer would pop by the studio and spend hours expounding on his ideas about human nature, alchemy and the Federal Reserve, and Oberst found himself rapt. "A lot of people would write him off as a conspiracy-theory crazy person," he says. "But then he'd turn a corner and hit on a point that was completely truthful."

And that's a cool section about the reggae influence, too! Interesting they said it might not SOUND much like reggae, but that the LYRICS are namely inspired by the concepts in reggae songs..... and a track named after SELASSIE I!  8)

"In Rastafarianism, they're talking about fighting back against an imperial power with the best tools at their disposal, which are music and soul and weed and community," he says. "The symbolism in that music seemed very potent to me, and very appropriate."

Wow, big praise from Robin Hilton at NPR!

Quote

I won't mince words: This is the best record Bright Eyes has ever made. In fact, it's the best record the band's frontman, Conor Oberst, has ever been a part of. Publicists like to say as much any time an artist releases a new album, but in this case, it's actually true. The People's Key is a career-defining work of art.

Here's where I'm at with Conor. Love his work on MoF, love his solo record and MVB, was a fan of Desa back when I was in highschool, like Bright Eyes songs here and there, but LOVE his voice. Is this record good enough for me (a very broke man) to spend money on? I think (and hope) that it will be better than previous Bright Eyes records because of his other project's influence, but I need some insight before I buy it.

Oh okay, well, then just for you, here comes my top 3 this morning (it changes every other hour or so, since all of the songs are BRILLIANT, but if forced to pick...)  :)

Bright Eyes - Ladder Song (The People's Key) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si6SHevkfo0#)
This one, oh my God this one, I always thought there should be some more piano songs and this one was just instant for me, first few seconds just BAM right into my heart. It almost hurts to listen to.

08 Beginner's Mind - Bright Eyes (The People's Key) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AA9i8S87ME#)
Some reviewer said how this might be his mainstream breakthrough song or something like that and even though I think all Bright Eyes songs are beyond amazing, this one might just be a little easier to take to heart perhaps?

04 Approximate Sunlight - Bright Eyes (The People's Key) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDIbrXCHrYU#)
The drums in this one kind of reminds me of the very last part of Cobra, but I dunno, maybe that's just me hallucinating...  ??? either way, brilliant song, brilliant!

It was oh so hard to pick and the others are just as lovely, I like everything Bright Eyes so I'm probably not the right person to ask for advice if you don't like regular Bright Eyes stuff that much... but, truly, I think you'll like it!  :D

Yeah so happy they solved it, SC really handled it well, always so nice. I've pretty much been listening since, loving it to no end. Lights a fire in your heart it does, goooo Bright Eyes. And how hilarious is this one:

my 2 cents after listening through the album is that it's definitely quality.   Lots to get your arms around for sure.   But for sure I like it.

Any favorite songs? Maybe all of them? ;) :D

you should get it soon.

if you don't just send them an e-mail. i hadn't received my digital download on the 1st by like 6 that night so i sent them one and within ten minutes I had my songs downloaded. real good customer service. they even took the time in the e-mail to explain what had been going on all day and why it had taken so long to get me the e-mail.

They're all so good, but Ladder Song is just insanely good and when I read this in an interview it somehow got another dimension to it:
QuoteLast fall, the singer's Omaha community lost an old friend to suicide. Stricken, he wrote the "Ladder Song" in two days. He recorded the track with his own outdated keyboard, passing over the studio's grand piano to preserve the feeling of his first takes at home. Amidst the dreamy imagery and alien references elsewhere on the album, the spare, melancholy song provided a human touch. "It seemed like the missing piece," he said, "but I didn't know there was a piece missing."

Listening for the first time right now, and like it a lot so far. Only beef I have is the intro. I'm not gonna wanna listen to that 2 minute intro every time I spin this one.

Upon 1st listen, I really like the album and as Mahg33ta said, there is a lot to it I think.  Two things kinda bothered me about it though.  First was the extended spoken word intro in Firewall.  I just wish it was a separate track.  Secondly, while there is no basis to this other than my own bias, I don't really care for Conor writing a tune named Haille Selassie.  Those were the only two initial beefs I had with this album.  Otherwise, I enjoyed every tune a bunch.  Hopefully I'll be able to give it another spin or two this afternoon. :)

Yeah, those intros... it's better than the Cassadaga intro at least, I've only just recently gotten used to that one and the Clairaudients track is so good, it's been annoying having to skip it. Anyways, keep us updated on what you think of the album once you've listened to it some more!  :)

All of the intros on his albums are annoying.   I am not the most technically proficient but they drove me how to figure out how to set the start time for a song manually in itunes.   Now when I play "at the bottom of everything" it skips the whole beginning and starts at the "1, 2 ..... 1, 2, 3, 4".   The knowledge how to do that came in handy for Cassadaga and will help again here.

Haven't really had a chance to listen again but will report back w some favorites after a bit more time to soak in.

Agree that the immediate digital download is fantastic, especially when the band is touring soon.   Gives me a few more weeks to learn the stuff.   (take note Middle Brother:  album 3/1, show 3/3)

Oh but At the bottom of everything is the most pleasant one!  ;) Pretty handy with the start time thingy though, I'm not a fan of Itunes, but will see if it works with some other program... probably not with Spotify that's my number one music program, I'll probably just have to endure. And please report back after the soak, looking forward to hearing more opinions!  :)

Wooah, wooaah, are you saying the Bright Eyes songs on that one aren't good! :o Happy Accident is excellent, no arguing mister! ;) I'm a huge fan of Rollerskating though, and all the other Neva Dinova songs on there too, but Spring Cleaning was written by Conor... both versions are excellent, but I think the Conor version might be just a tad better 'cause of the piano.

Sara, have you seen any setlists from the past couple of nights? I figured you would be attending a couple of them. So far not one person has posted anything about the new shows and it's killing me. I can't wait to find out what they are gonna be playing live for the new tour. I saw in one interview where he said that they were gonna be doing a lot of the older songs in the same style as the new record and they are gonna be touring with a lot of new equipment as well as two new huge keyboard rigs. Should be wonderful...

Me too! I wonder how much they'll change it around? I read this morning that Conor said they got 200 shows booked this year (http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts-ents/music-reviews/bright-eyes-oran-mor-glasgow-1.1084293 (http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts-ents/music-reviews/bright-eyes-oran-mor-glasgow-1.1084293)), that sounds to me like you'd want to mix it up a little, at least after a 100 shows or so...  ;)

It is a really good album. I wasn't so sure my first listen but now that I have listened to it for a few days it has really grown on me. I honestly couldn't tell you a favorite song because each one has something in it I really like. I really hope he continues to make Bright Eyes songs. I know I had had a ball at their shows over the last 5 or 6 years. I'm so glad they are visiting the south on this tour...

I've loved all of his side projects and stuff. I liked MOF much more than the mystic valley band. I like his self-titled album with MVB much more than outer south though. I used a netflix rental to get "Spend an evening with Saddle Creek" a documentary on the album labels roots. It is very interesting to see him when he was so young just getting started. I recommend it to any big fan. I figure the MOF will sit down next winter after a big year for MMJ with the release of the new album. That means the new MOF album will be in our hands in the fall of 12 or winter or 13. In my opinion anyway

The official video for Shell Games:

Bright Eyes - Shell Games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6MnpD5_4GI#ws)

I won't lie, I'm not an immediate fan of the video, but maybe it will grow on me.  The album took a little while to sink in too.

Most Bright Eyes videos suck.

At first thought I was like, yeah that's true, but then I thought I really like the First Day of My Life video and that Easy/Lucky/Free one and Four Winds come to think of it and At the Bottom of Everything and even the one for Hot Knives. Only one that I don't like is Lover I Don't Have to Love and well, Bowl of Oranges is okay, it's just that the quality of the YouTube versions are kind of bad. I haven't made my mind up about Coyote Song just yet and I agree with you miss HS, not an immediate fan of the new video, but it might grow on me.

just checking back in-  for me, the album hasn't grabbed me yet... kind of unfortunate as I want to like it and have concert tickets -  It's interesting, I respect it, but the songs aren't growing on me.    I'll keep trying  :-\

Keep at it, I think that it'll get better, if not by the time of the show, then after the show. Hearing them live, OH MY GOD, it was so good.  :D

Well, this is my own highly subjective and very personal interpretation, but to me this song seems to be about keeping in touch with your inner child and not letting demands or opinions of others change your own vision of what you want to do. And based on comments from people who know JJ, he seems to be a person who's good at that.

Bo Koster, 2006 Pitchfork interview found here: http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/6299-my-morning-jacket/ (http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/6299-my-morning-jacket/)
QuoteAnd he's hilarious. That's a big contradiction in him, where he can be completely sincere and serious and really take a lot of care in everything he does but at the same time he can be very carefree and childlike. One of the main things I learned from him was to stop compartmentalizing things and deconstructing moments and instead just feel them as if we were still children. 'Cause when you're six years old you're an artist. Those are the most creative moments of anyone's life. He still has that wide-eyed wonder through it all. There's no pretension at all to anything he does.

I think the song is a wish to be able to do the same, to keep from being cynical, for the inner child to stay. I often suspect that Conor's singing to himself, no matter the pronoun and this one might be one of those. And also, there's some reverb in this song, when they perform it live Conor even uses another microphone when singing this one  :)

The latest Rolling Stone has a Q&A with Conor Oberst:

The song "Beginner's Mind" obviously refers to Buddhism.

That song is actually sort of dedicated to my friend Jim James - it's a tribute to his spirit.  He got into some of that [Buddhist] stuff, and we would talk about it a lot, just the idea that every time you go into an artistic endeavor, you need to try to start from zero again and throw out the things you've learned and your preconceptions and start new.

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere.  From the latest Rolling Stone (Issue 1125, March 3, 2011), Q & A with Conor Oberst:

I'm turning into Mr Negative I guess - don't mean to! - just posted my comments on the disappointing Middle Brother album also...

After many listens of the new Bright Eyes, at least 15 times I'd say start to finish, I've reached the conclusion it's IMO a pretty weak album.   The songs have not grown on me and the whole spoken word / studio trickery / effects wears thin on me.   The songs just aren't that great.

So I went surfing for reviews to see how it's being received.   Wow, a lot of negative reviews.   This one (D+) sums up my feelings pretty well and is fair without just being a slamfest

Again, I'm not trying to bash here- nothing against Bright Eyes - went into this with an open mind after being impressed by MOF...

As this is the only band I hold as dear or possibly even slightly more dear than My Morning Jacket I will now turn into miss Positive! ;) I actually think there's been quite a few positive reviews, more than I even expected since reviewers love to compare everything Conor does to I'm Wide Awake It's Morning (or sometimes Lifted) and somehow they never think it measures up (which just seems crazy to me). The review you posted doesn't really say much about the actual music, which isn't all that uncommon, even the review I tried to write suffers from the same problem.

Either way, I understand if you don't like the spoken words, I find the rhythm of quite nice, especially the "people freak out, just flat flip out" part. But I can't agree that the songs lack space, or maybe rather my opinion is that even though some of them contain a lot of different instruments, it never takes away from the beauty of each song.

I find this review much more accurate:
QuoteIt is like a Greatest Hits album, where he's reworked and collaged everything we've loved (and others have absolutely hated) about him over the past fifteen or more years - the world-weary rush of frustrated energy, the Elvis-ish Dylanisms, the over-emoted troubles of the soul, the quest for bottled innocence and the inner war with spirituality. There's the production suss of Lifted... and Digital Ash (which at times sort of hints that Conor and Mike Mogis might go the way of Trent Reznor and end up making some incredible soundtracks), the Scientology-baiting hippy-dippiness of Cassadaga, trembling pianos, tumbling double kick-drums, and the cut up De La Soul-esque samples canoodling with the cartoon-angst of Fevers & Mirrors. The whole thing feels soaked in the heart-breaking honesty of his career-defining opus I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning but with shimmers of everything else he's done humming beneath and above the surface of it. There's even a bunch of rattling drum-rolls and yelps that wouldn't be out of place on a second Desaparacidos record. And, that's not to mention the lyrics about stuff like snuff films on gumbo-trons, which feature on 'Beginner's Mind' which could possibly be his first radio hit or at the very least one of his finest songs, with a universal appeal.

From: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4141839-guide-to-2011-part-2--albums-dis-is-looking-forward-to-in-2011 (http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4141839-guide-to-2011-part-2--albums-dis-is-looking-forward-to-in-2011)

I love Cassadaga and that is a great song indeed! Such a sad topic, beautifully phrased as always, ♥ Bright Eyes. In Spotify they incorrectly put Smoke Without Fire as the 14th track, but I quite like that, since Lime Tree is so very sad, it's nice to let Smoke Without Fire be the final song instead.

Whoa!  Flash time warp:::  I'm finally listening to this album, via the same site that is currently streaming Thievery Corporation's new album.

I remember reading the interview (maybe in RS) where Conor explains about the guy who's behind all of the spoken word... sounds like an interesting dude!  I too may not have it in me to always listen to the intro talk, but I reaaaallly like the pieces Conor decided to stick throughout the album.

So far the stickiest song for me has been "One For You, One For Me."  And I like the spoken bit at the end  8)  Excited to finally be giving this a spin!  A lot to grasp for sure, as several people have mentioned, but I like hearing different things with each spin, until I eventually get the words down.  And I like deciphering the lyrics and connecting dots of information, etc...

Took me long enough to give it a go!  :P

Some Conor news, so exciting!  :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Q: Earlier this year, you released a single, "MariKKKopa," and toured with your political punk-rock band Desaparecidos, with whom you hadn't put out an album for a decade. Is there more to come?

A: They haven't announced it yet, but we are going to do some more shows, and put out more music next year.

Q: What's happening next?

A: My main thing is just to keep writing. I've been doing some songwriting that's for my own record, I suppose. That'll happen next year, probably under my own name.

Q: There have been a lot of reports suggesting you've retired Bright Eyes. True?

A: No. I love playing with Mike and Nate. Hopefully, we'll do that sometime in the near future. . . . They both worked on a movie called Writers that I wrote a song for that will be out next year.

I saw Conor last night in DC and it was freaking brilliant.  Mostly a solo show though on some songs he one of the Bright Eyes guys play keyboards and some trumpet.

He played a few new songs, which were all great, and then great picks of older stuff.  I was particularly excited to hear The Big Picture, Waste of Paint, At The Bottom of Everything, Lua, Land Locked Blues, and First Day of My Life.

Really rekindled my love for Conor after being very disappointed by Bright Eyes on the last tour.

Will be catching the Dawes/Conor show this Thursday on Long Island. Can't wait. Will likely pick up the vinyl of the new album at the show.

Edit: Hmmm....maybe not:

Due to manufacturing delays, vinyl pressings for Upside Down Mountain will not be available until around the end of May.

Nonesuch hopes to start shipping the vinyl on May 23.

Oh well.

I've never been a MEGA Oberst fan, but I am definitely a huge fan of his songwriting, and challenge anyone to find a better lyricist. The guy is a poet whose skills with the pen are lightyears away from any of his peers. While I sometimes find his vocal delivery style a little grating, I am a huge fan of Jonathan Wilson's work as a producer, so I went into this release with pretty high expectations. While I wouldn't say those expectations have been surpassed, I'm definitely enjoying this record. The highpoints here are as high as any of my favorite songs written by Oberst. "Double Life" is my clear-cut favorite so far, just love that concept for a song, and those are some breathtaking harmonies in the chorus. "Enola Gay", "Hundreds of Ways" and "Time Forgot" are just great too. What a pleasant record. Definitely worth tracking down!

I'm not sure if you meant it like this, but they aren't the band that plays on the album.

Also, was at the show in Pittsburgh on Sunday, and the new vinyl wasn't there. Show was great.

So good indeed! It could very easily be my favorite of the year. I've got my eye on this too.

Also, Fast Friends, the b side to Hundreds of Ways is very good. Has a bit of an MMJ sound to me with that long guitar part at the end.

Got the Hundreds of Ways/Fast Friends record, but no player at the moment. Found it on YouTube though, thanks for the reminder! Definitely agree with you on the guitar part.

I have the audience recording of Conor's set from the Fillmore. Would it be ok to post here or would that be frowned upon?

If he's playing anywhere down in Mexico around then I'd say pretty good.  If not... probably not.
