Intense doo-woppage there..... he could lose the doowoppers and I'd be ok with it... but "Half Moon" is one of my favorite songs off the new album thus far. Love the acoustic solo version I heard of it though....................

Download it here - http://thesteamengine.blogspot.com/2011/01/iron-wine-2011-01-05-greene-space-wnyc.html (http://thesteamengine.blogspot.com/2011/01/iron-wine-2011-01-05-greene-space-wnyc.html)

I like the direction Sam seems to be taking Iron & Wine. He experiments with some cool sounds and beats on a lot of the new material and the reworking of older tunes to fit their new sound is pretty alright.

I do agreeeee... Something like a continuation from "Arms of a Thief" and "Serpent Charmer," with various elements that he used on Songs of the Shepherd's Dog. His sister Sarah always brought a great element to his shows, but Rosie Thomas has a great voice too and does a lovely job alongside Sam  :)

Whoa whoa whoa hold the phone here. I heard a Jerry reference!!! I had to find the video to see what that was all about, impossible to tell just with the audio... 54:52 after he introduces Rosie and is about to introduce "Benny Mozzarella," a long-haired spectacle-wearing gentleman... on bongos (/percussion) :-X :-X HELL YEAH hahah he says "You guys thought Jerry was dead!" And some girl gives her love with a yelp, and a guy says "He's been hidin' out!" Then Sam goes on to say he's been working with him all along.  :-*  :-*  Jerry love

Awww thanks I have to agree!!  ;D ;D

Anyone have a listen to their album released on Record Store Day? Live in Norfolk 6/20/05 during their Woman King tour

It's blowing my mind....

There's this fantastic upbeat danceable version of "Bird Stealing Bread" that makes me feel a.) like I'm on a beach with a perfect warm breeze and b.) like the song was always meant to sound that way, but highly grateful to appreciate the contrast between the two versions

Even my one friend that's kept his distance from I&W really enjoyed that version just now when I sent it. It's full-band style, with Sarah sounding clearer and sweeter than ever...

1. Sunset Soon Forgotten
2. Jezebel
3. Woman King
4. Free Until They Cut Me Down
5. Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song)
6. Love and Some Verses
7. Bird Stealing Bread
8. The Night Descending
9. Naked as We Came
10. Communion Cups and Someone's Coat
11. Fever Dream
12. On Your Wings
13. Freedom Hangs Like Heaven
14. Upward Over The Mountain
15. Teeth in the Grass
16. Southern Anthem
17. My Lady's House
18. The Trapeze Swinger

A live "Southern Anthem" is a sweet treat too, along with all the Woman King gems....

!!!Highly recommend!!!!  :o

Looking back, I read it as "space monkeys uptown" hahahahh whoooppss....  But it's super groove-heavy. Really makes me wanna run back to NYC the 29th to catch him (and Jeff and Trish, if she makes it!!!)

I'm really hoping, now that he's showing so much more of this musical side of himself, that he'll pull up a live Serpent Charmer and/or Arms of a Thief and/or Dark Eyes, etc... some of his deeper tunes.  Dust 'em off an' bring 'em out... Or re-work some of the older songs to the "newer sound".... music is so often about subtleties, and any little detail he changes just puts me on another planet. On that Norfolk album, he does "Love and Some Verses" in a new chilling octave. Whereas, when I saw him in Buffalo a few years ago, he made it super dance-tastic!

That's one of the elements I've always been in love with about the Grateful Dead. I wasn't old enough to tour with them in the day, but the point being you COULD go to a Dead show every single night and even if a song were repeated, it would become a whole new masterpiece all of its own will. The keeping of the lyrics, but total change of sound... something like that. Not an exact comparison for obvious reasons, but ya know....

***Still not sure if I'm catchin them in NYC yet!!!

Yoooou betcha! She's hopped on the I&W ship and has been touring with Sam lately tooooo  :-D I'm not sure why his sister Sarah isn't involved atm, but Rosie does a fine fine job  :)

And Jeff, do you have the recording of Rosie's song "Red Rover?" I never really explored her catalogue, but Sam does guest vocals on that song (or at least this random version of it that I have!) Sounds pretty-like  :)

don't know that one but have liked her stuff that i've heard.

i really enjoyed the live sam show the other day and thought the new stuff was great. ending with naked as we came was awesome as that's one of my favorite songs on what is clearly my favorite I&W album.

Have seen him a few times and hope to catch the show at Radio City although my wife doesn't really love him (she fell asleep at the last show we saw together  :o )

It's much clearer than the first impression I got from the NPR concert which to me sounded like the band was trying to find their footing with playing these songs live. It's much better than I expected, should have never doubted Mr. Beam & Co. they have never let me down.

This site also has the new Cold War Kids, decent band, didn't even know they had a new one coming out

GOOD FIND! I was wondering where all the people on their board were getting all these reviews and opinions from.... I had small hesitations at first, but my faith has already been redeemed from hearing that NPR stream and the few songs they've posted on their myspace 8) Thanks so much for posting that link!!

Question: On the Tiny Desk show, does the guy in the audience request "Chelsea Hotel" ?  I put the volume all the way up and couldn't hear it, then unplugged my laptop and put the earbuds in all the way up and couldn't hear it, then pressed my hands as hard against my ears as I could with the earbuds in and thought he said "Chelsea Hotel"... but any enlightenment would be much appreciated!  ???

HEY. Serious. Steam Engine blog..... Iron & Wine @ Bonnaroo '08. Maybe some of yinz were there.... maybe some of yunz already saw this on his blog!! But it needs be shared in the thread:

http://thesteamengine.blogspot.com/2008/09/iron-wine-bonnaroo-2008.html (http://thesteamengine.blogspot.com/2008/09/iron-wine-bonnaroo-2008.html)

Definitely reggae themed.  Definitely love the reggae twist!! (thanks for posting this up, Jason! Being a hunormous fan of reggae, this does something extra magickal to the senses) (ie fuses are blown) //////*&*^%^$\\\\||||////  :o :D :D

He made House by the Sea suuuuuuper reggae-fied when I saw him with band in '08, and they actually had to call in the paramedics, but my spontaneous combustion could not be resolved. They did manage to gather some of my remains in various test tubes and beakers... which I think explains a few things.  :-X  The thought had never once crossed my mind that he was even interested in that form of music. Kind of like when I first heard the Easy Star All-Stars re-work Pink Floyd and Radiohead into reggae. Huh?  ???

Just tried to watch the guys on Conan just now... goddamn televisions are more trouble than they're even worth. Have no idea what channel Conan would even be on, the "Search" option sends me on an impossible mission into Hi-Def On-Demand Hi-Fi Wi-Fi Stereophonic B.S... then when I finally find it, they're already more than halfway through the song.... So it's at least half my own fault for not ever bonding with that space-age new-wave big-screen hunk of metal, but sheesh.  I'm sure it'll be video-fied and available online at some point or another, I think they always are.... but I just kind of needed to vent on my tv aversion for a moment, sorry gang  >:(

Late Edit:  Mi madre just texted me from across the house to say that, by some strange act of jeebiss, Iron & Wine somehow replayed at 1am AND the DVR taped it right from the beginning. So when I said "hunk of metal....." I, uh... I just meant what a hunk!   ;)  :-*

P.S. unable to afford the show in NYC on the 29th, but I look forward to hearing about it from all who go!!

P.P.S.  NEW ALBUM OUT TOMORROW/TODAY!!!! :o :o :o

I'm digging Kiss Each Other Clean so far. It's only 7.99 at target fyi. I bet he's pissed a lot of his old fans off with this and The Shepherd's Dog but i like how he's evolved. You can only do so much with the stripped down acoustic style.

That Amoeba show is pretty cool, I like how they rework "House by the Sea," and I fell asleep with the show in my earbuds at some point last night.... yeah, the folks on their board are like a 50/50 or so about liking his old stuff vs. new stuff, but I mean... I wasn't there and all obviously when Dylan went electric.... but I'll be damned if it wasn't a sweet change-up! I like Sam's new deal, and he still does plenty solo acoustic bits to satisfy my specific braincells that love it.

He just recently did a La Blogotheque thing.. in a wine cellar, never the less!  (dut dat PSSH)
It's pretty grainy and realllllly weird camera positioning (you're like, looking at Sam from under a weird wooden staircase or something??) But it's interesting to say the least...

Iron and Wine | Tree by the river | A Take Away Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCjxeFrUC1U#ws)

They also caught him awhile back (in '07) in their "Behind Closed Doors" series... where artists play in an elevator (in Amsterdam)! Crazy concept, but I can't say I'm opposed to the idea! Sam makes fun of playing in an elevator... but he does a sweet job of it, and don't I wish I happened upon such an elevatorrrr  :P

Im going to have to give this a few listens before I know how much I like it, especially because a lot of the songs it was hard to hear the lyrics (and seemed like they thematically bounced all over the place)...I like the expanded sound, but he really took a huge jump on some of the songs, whereas Walking Far From Home and Tree By The River sound like more natural progressions to me and identifiable as I&W. That said, Monkeys Uptown and the album closer with the dumb name are awesome.

Im not much into I&W but I did just download his live show from Ameoba a la the Steam Engine. I have to say it's fantastic. I always thought he was solely an acoustic act. Do his albums feature bands at all? Am I just an idiot?

The new album has a lot more going on than his early albums..At least 80% of the songs - if not all fo them - on Kiss Each Other Clean have a full band sound going on.

Hey good taste!

As for which I like betterrrrrrrr...... oyyy veyyyy... well... ok let's see.... well, I like Shepherd's Dog a whole awful lot.. I like how the songs flow into eachother like a giant painting on the ceiling of a brilliant palace somewhere.... I suppose I may currently be partial to that one, too. But I haven't had a full "go" with Kiss Eachother Clean yet,  you know? Like Shepherd's Dog has taken me through the seasons several times now, and I've seen and heard him play those tunes, so there's the personal element there too. And it was pretty much the first I&W that caught my attention (I think). But there's a grand lot of potential with this noob, for sure. "Tree By The River" was strangely written about my past (something Sam ALWAYS seems to channel in very uncanny ways....) I am STOKED to dance-off at the upcoming shows with the new more upbeat tunes... and I'm still working my way through the mass of new lyrics that I can start dissecting and relating too, etc....

Sooooo I guess I'm still "on the fence 'round the [shepherd's] dog in the mangerrrrr"  if you will... that might be way random, but it's a line from Glad Man Singing  ;) ;)

I didn't get to go (family obligations) but have listened to the new album a few times already.
Enjoying it alot but too early to say where I rank it.

It would be hard for it to come close to "Our Endless Numbered Days"  as that is a desert island disc and "Around The Well" is pretty freakin' special as well.

http://www.kgsr.com/musiclounge/index.aspx?artistNum=0&songNum=0 (http://www.kgsr.com/musiclounge/index.aspx?artistNum=0&songNum=0)

It keeps cutting me off shortly after "Tree By the River," but it's an amazing version with Sam by himself. And I like how he talks about "dressing a song up in different clothes" and the effects that has on the end results...

This is extremely random as I pretty much thought that I have every possible studio released (or "un-released") track that Sam has recorded...  I've delved deeper into his stashes of songs than I have for most bands, and yet this bypassed me completely!

Well, maybe not completely-- I have a live version of Sam & Calexico playing this at the Triple Door in '05... but I was searching youtube to find that live version to post on here, when I came across a studio version of it from a Japanese album release of In The Reins!!!

It's him & Calexico covering Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties," enjoy!:

Sam's stage presence is not one to miss!!!  One of my favorite musicians to watch live, he definitely says some of the funniest things..... but always maintains his level of modesty.  I hope we've figured out whether or not he and Jim are playing together at the after-show ACL event.  They REALLY OUGHT TO.  But you'll have a blast in Seattle I'm sure!!  What venue is it again? (I know I could look online but being lazy)  I have 2 shows of him performing in Seattle, and there are some real deal rare songs he's busted out there, including that cover of All Tomorrow's Parties, with Calexico.  It's gonna be outrageous, get ready!!!!   :o :o

Awesome show. Full review when I get near a real computer

Rabbit will run
God made the automobile
Freedom hangs like heaven
Lovesong of the buzzard
Sea and the rhythm
Big burned hand
Half moon
Arms of a theif/The devil never sleeps
Jesus the mexican boy
Walking far from home
On your wings
Peace beneath the city/Sinning hands
My lady's house
Free until they cut me down
Your fake name is good enough for me

Have you seen him on this tour? Absolutely mind blowing. The Shepherds Dog tour was like a bridge to his show becoming a full-on rock/blues/jazz show complete with 20 minute jams. He re-works a lot of old stuff with the full band too, kinda makes Creek and Endless Numbered sound like demos. I loved it but its earned a fair amount of griping from self professed hardcore types.

All that I've seen of him on this tour has just been videoooooo  :embarassed:  But 11-11-11 it's on!!!!!

And to me it feels like a Dylan gone electric experience... where, yeah, he's changed his sound a great deal, and it's not all soft folky goodness all the time.... but MAN if you can readjust your ears to the change you are IN FOR IT!!  And I don't feel that way about many artists/bands... to my ears, some artists can carry the awesomeness over to that next level, and some artists lose the honesty or the genuine element (changing to fit more into the status quo).    ...I feel that Sam's change is a true reflection of his soul and self-growth, even though I feel sometimes that Tree By the River is a little too over-produced on Kiss Eachother Clean  heh  :P  But it hasn't changed my overall feelings for his music.... now I'm just in love with ALL of his work!!

And I love how he re-works his older tunes too... it starts off like a new song and then WHAM he hits you with the first verse and your head just reels with the recognition  :D  I'm the slightly obsessed one on the I&W forum and on torrent hunts for all the live shows I can sequester just to hear the 50 different ways he does Bird Stealing Bread or Sunset Soon Forgotten  :P

C'mon 11-11-11!!!!    :D

Ahaaa... so I've finally been enlightened to the fact that this was taped from the night previous to their public performance in Atlanta.... (I'm a slowpoke with the tvs sometimes)  I'm not familiar with the Artists' Den thing... but it looks like they tore through 24 songs on 11-10-11 for an audience of 500, and THAT's going to be aired on pbs "this winter!!!"  Woohoo!!  Ya'll will have to let me know when that goes on, please!

And in the meantime, I really recommend tuning in to the 11 video sesh on youtube-- it's the whole 11-11 show!!!  :D :D :D  Thanks again Penny, you've sent me reeling tonight!!  :-*

That Artist Den clip got me in an I&W mood last night and I went through this entire thread, watched the Green Space performance from a year ago! I looked for the Jerry shout out at the right mark, too! That was awesome, finally got what you and Chicken were talking about. I need to go back and make sure I have all their albums. I only have the last 3. I'm now on an I&W kick.

Well I must say, I was a good black friday shopper as I got out to Newbury Comics while visiting family for thanksgiving in Boston.  In addition to several great vinyl pickups by wilco, justin townes earle, pete townsend, the dead and others I found this amazing new gem.

Don't know if you guys know about this one but if you don't have it, ya gotta hear it.  A daytrotter sessions album with acoustic Iron & Wine (sam and rosie thomas) on side a and the low anthem on side b.  Great intimate acoustic sam that sounds like he is coming out of your living room.  Beautiful and stunning.
4 great tunes, 1 acoustic guitar - Godless Brother, Tree By The River, Glad Man Singing & As We Came.  Holy crap is this good.

Woody, have you heard this yet?  The album came with a free mp3 download so I can burn you a copy if you want it and can't find it.  This is an incredible 4 song album by mr. beam.

The Low Anthem side is also excellent.  5 great tunes that are simply beautiful.  Definitely a new thing to be thankful for.

Aahhhhh it's one of my favoritest performances!!  I was able to grab the free Quicktime video that they released for d/l when the session was first posted.... but I don't think I have it on mp3??

Jeff, if you'd like the video (if you don't have it or can't see it or whatnot.... I don't know how the daytrotter thing really works, can you watch them for all eternity after they're posted?)  Well anyway!  If you'd like the video, and if I can burn it onto a dvd for you, I'd gladly trade you for the mp3 version!  Let me know if you'd like a video copy!  And thanks very much for the offer!!!  I thought I posted about it on here somewhere, but maybe not!!  (And god, sorry if I didn't!!!)  So glad you found it, it's such a gem!!!!   :-*

So... I haven't been really on the I&W message board all that much...... gets kinda boring in there sometimes, no posts for days, and not always a lot of activity..... but, for whatever reason, it's gone!!  The account has been "suspended," and it's been that way for months now.

And it just kind of gnaws at me sometimes, because there were always real early updates about stuff Sam's doing, etc... and reviews and sometimes recordings of his shows.... and it's just buggin' me out a little, when I think of it... I hope they pull it back together again!  I heard that it went out once before, too..... so hopefully just a temporary thing  :embarassed:

Found this on the interweb. It's pretty decent quality recording. This is pretty representative of Sam's new live sound. Sea And The Rhythm and Fever Dream are incredible.

This Sea & The Rhythm is devouring me

I hear potential to make it sound super Eastern now, too, if Sam threw in a Pipa or a Koto  8)  It's great as it is, the sound just came to mind.....

You're welcome guys. Like I said, I'll post more next week. I like hooking up Sam's fans with some of his music you might not have heard before. His live shows are pretty great. Just wondering, what are some of your favorite songs/favorite album? I might have a surprise in store... ;)

Surprise?!   :o

It's tough for me to play favorites with his work.... I get in different grooves, and different ones appeal at different times.... I do really love Our Endless Numbered Days and Woman King (and Shepherd's Dog of course  :) )  But his rare older "unreleased"  tracks (and Creek tracks) have special intimate untouchable places in my heart...  :-*  And since I've named every other album so far, I may as well add that I do love Kiss Eachother Clean too..... toldja it's tough for me to play favorites  :-\ :-\  And by "tough" I mean "impossible"   :P

But... that being said... (for me at least!) any Iron & Wine surprise is a good surprise!  :D

I know Jeff really likes Our Endless Numbered Days, but I forget/don't know what others' favorites are....  ? ? ? ???

I've only been able to see him live twice, but both times were something pretty special. Ran into him at a coffee shop in Seattle, too. Dude couldn't have been nicer.

Endless Numbered Days? I can work with that...

Been waiting for the fansite to come back online.  I usually troll over there. And since it's been shut down, I was trolling the official forum, but eh.. it's not so good. The vibe around here is nice. I think I'll stay for awhile. I like MMJ. Not as much as Iron and Wine, but they are definitely in my top ten. I LOVE that they tend to play a lot of covers. Did yinz see the video of Jim James and Sam Beam doing "Someday the Waves - Wonderful Tonight - Stuck On You"? Audio is not so great, but you can tell it was awesome.

I  don't know how to embed the video, so here's the link...
Iron & Wine with Jim James - Someday the Waves into Wonderful Tonight into Stuck On You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flBO7POuETY#)

Oh! look at that. It did it automatically. Super sweet.

That video is awwwwesome though, we were definitely all over it when they played together.... I'd almost maxed my credit card to drive 20 hours (one way) and see that show (but decided it maybe not in my best interest   :P)

Enjoying a glass of wine with a good vinyl copy of kiss each other clean.  still not my favorite Iron & Wine lp (easily endless numbered days) but it keeps getting better and better with repeated listening.

Happy holidays woody, thinking of you and your wonderful spirit!

Aw  :dankk2:!!  Jeff I hope to someday share some good wine with you and Beth, and have an I&W vinyl listening session!  :)

K.E.C. is slowly aging and definitely sounding even finer as time goes on (strange how much music does that.....)  I'm noticing it too for sure.

Thanks for your sweet thoughts as always!  You're a beam of light yourself you know!  I just put K.E.C. on too now since you mentioned it, and thinkin of your smiling face!  :)  Enjoy your iron & wine & wine tonight!!   :bath:  And happiest holidays to you too!!

My neither, Jeff  :embarrassed:  I don't have infonet on my phone, and some things just slip right through the cracks...  well, one less vinyl for me to be worried about losing or damaging, at least

It's going to be such an incredible album though.  And I am extremely giddy about this "Volume 1" business   :cheesy:
