Title: The Sheepdogs
Post by: The Ditchrider on Mar 02, 2011, 06:41 PM
Has anyone heard of these guys?  The album Learn and Burn is absolutely fantastic.  A great mix of all different influences...great music.  Some Allman Bros, Stones, Guess Who, Black Keys, a lil' Beatles, Chicago maybe.  Great vocalist, three part harmonies.

Check them out.

Thank you!!!!!!!

The CBC did a feature a few weeks ago on this up-and-coming Canadian indie band and I forgot their name. I won't forget it now, thanks to your post!!

Fans of CCR, Guess Who, Allmans, Dead, Zeppelin etc... check these maniacs from Saskatoon out!

No problem.  They really are a great band and I hope more people check them out.  They offer a free download of their 2008 album on their website.  I have only heard their latest Learn and Burn and I cant stop listening...forgot about the Grateful Dead similarities on some songs!

Take care

I see that they are on tour and are playing NYC on the 24th as well as SXSW on the 18th of March. I'd go to see them in Toronto next Friday, but I work the night shift. Maybe I'll walk by at 11pm on my lunch break; I work near the famed Horseshoe Tavern. Great band and thanks.

They have a few upcoming Canada shows...I see a London Ontario gig...kinda far for me being in Ohio.  Hopefully they will swing by closer to me...what I have watched on youtube they are awesome live, even with youtube quality.  they do some nice acoustic versions as well.

What a great throwback sound done right.  Put's a smile on my face.  Pretty cool that they offer the Big Stand as a free download.  I just downloaded Learn and Burn as well.

There's lots of Americana in their sound, but they are also rooted in classic Canadian roots rock such as The Band, Neil Young and Guess Who. Of course, these bands helped shape classic Americana as well.

Ha! I have been avoiding some of the more recent thread posts of new bands bc I have been in the "there-are-too-many-bands-I'm-involved-with-right-now-to-care-and-learn-about-nevermind-listen-to," mode.

Anyone ever get like that?

Thankfully I kept seein this come up to the top of the thread list and thankfully I like sheepdogs in general. Anyways great listen, this is hittin right in my wheelhouse right now. Thanks again board members

I'm with ya Wolof!  I guess I'm fortunate in that I have a job that allows me to listen to music all day but even then I hit new music overload a lot.  There's just sooo much amazing stuff out there that I want to listen to and support.

Now if you would start a Rush thread and DB or Buawwwwwww would get the metal thread started ;) ;D

Ha! I have a job that requires me to listen to or watch music-related programming all day and night. However, I hit music overload and most of it is very very bad. Ah well, at least I'm in a union.

The only thing I see is an upcoming import CD version of Learn & Burn for around $32 being released on March 29th on Amazon. They have a free download of their second album Big Stand on their website and you can get the download of L&B on their site or Amazon as well...sorry I wasn't of more help.  Didn't even see a merch section on their page.  Anyone at SXSW may be able to see if they are selling discs at their shows?

Man does the album version of Right On's guitar lick remind me of Pink Floyd's Dogs!

I love these guys but man every song reminds me of older stuff.  Even the 1st two tracks of the Big Stand kinda remind me of Bobby Dead no?

Agreed they remind me of all sorts of bands but I dont mind.  At least they are pulling from great older bands and not crappy older bands!

And I completely agree with the Weir sound

Agreed,

There is some serious soul/R&B on Rollo Tamasi, Suddenly and Learn & Burn and others. These guys are great throwbacks which can never go out of style. Great albums. Thanks again board, been diggin these albums this week!

did anyone else see that they are up for a contest on rolling stone, finding a featured up and coming band for the cover? I hope on a level they don't get it. Justin Beiber, Snooki, Sheepdogs? I'll give that a big Gob Bluthe "C'mon!"

ok I have my gripes with the rolling stone contest, but all that aside, they are in the final 4 with 2 rounds to go, if they survive the next round they'll be playing at bonnaroo which would be a great opportunity for exposure...

....putting aside that it's a rolling stone contest sponsored by garnier fructis shampoo, I really love this band and am encouraging people to vote for them because I want them to roll through mine and surrounding towns, I'm sure they could use the extra incentive or gas money or whatever they get from this contest to do so.

I had seen the contest in the mag but had never taken the time to check out any of the finalists.

Checked out the link and you guys are right.  The Sheepdogs are a pretty damn good rock 'n roll band.  I was looking at some of the judging/critique videos in the RS link and I'm almost hoping they don't win.  Although, playing at Bonnarroo would be huge for these guys as I think they would fit right in at the Roo.  I just got the sense by watching some of the critiques that the judges are almost trying to make them into something they're not.  I didn't get the sense from listening to some of their interviews that The Sheepdogs are about making top 40 radio hits.  They're more about just making music and I fear if they win, RS will try and change who they are as a band.

BTW, I thought all 4 of the finalists were pretty decent.  Empires kind of reminded me of Everest in the little I heard of them.  And it thought Fictionist were pretty tight as a band as well with some nice guitars and keyboards mixed in.  Even Lelia Broussard was decent I thought although she seems like she'd get swallowed up at Bonnarroo.

Well they are in the finals...they have made it this far, hope they win and it doesn't turn out to be a bad thing for them.  They deserve a shot but dont want to seem them get pushed in a direction they shouldn't go.

They are a great band as is, but really hope they aren't forced commercialized through this contest, sponsors and Rolling Stone.

Vote for em if you like em and stay strong to your sound, roots Sheepdogs.

This doesn't seem like an "industry thing" which would push them in the wrong direction. It is rolling stone/fructis which is sorta lame but my feelings have turned around on it.

They have seemed to get little attention thus far independently, the music is awesome and speaks for itself, they seem like a cool band, and the music is not "watered down, overproduced drivel" like is more the rule to the exception with rolling stone these days. So why not bring the magazine back to something reputible for a change?

I believe it will get them more album sales and fans. That's good for them. I'm interested to see where they go concerning a record deal if that becomes apart of the scenario. Hopefully they would hookup with something cool like Subpop, Jagjaguwar, nonesuch or something like that. If they go major, it'll be a letdown and could potentially take them in the wrong direction unless its a rare "flaming lips" type thing.

THE SHEEPDOGS WIN!!!!!

....the cover of the Rolling Stone! Good for them, they fucking deserve it, I wasn't a big fan of the whole thing at first but hey it's pretty sweet! I thought they were trailing behind that chick by a lot so this is a surprise.

...the kick in the balls or maybe a good thing depending on how you look at it is they were gonna open a run of dates with Kings of Leon who just canceled their tour....oh well hopefully new and better opportunities will arise....

They are celebrating tomorrow night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon!!!

I think Learn & Burn is a 2010 album, right? I also really love this album, all songs are great. Catfish 2 Boogalo is my favorite song I think, really love the jam part at the end. Can listen to that song over and over again!

I haven't listened to their two earlier CD's. Are they also good? Hopefully they will visit Europe soon :)

Investigated this a little more. Their site calls it a 2010 release, Amazon lists the release date as March 29, 2011 and wikipedia has "I Dont Know" as a 2011 single. Sputnik music reviewed the album 3/22/11, Hearya reviewed it 10/23/10, popmatters reviewed it 2/23/10...Based on what Ive gathered, Id guess it was independently released by them in 2010 but they got signed to a major label and it saw wide release this year. Considering it seems most discovered them/this album Im album year, Im personally going to still consider it a 2011 release.

Thanks for putting this out there though, because upon visiting their site, I found out you can download their album Big Stand for free on their site

I take it their new album is the S/T?? I listened to it once a few weeks ago. While I liked it, it just sounded like more of the same but not as good as Learn & Burn either - an album which many here compared with numerous classic rock bands and I fully agree and they have that sort of versatility...It was good enough, but didnt excite me like L&B. I should definitely revisit it though.

Title: Re: The Sheepdogs
Post by: oistheone on Nov 12, 2012, 07:54 PM
I definitely agree that the new album doesn't even come close to topping L+B. I absolutely despise "Feeling Good", and I can't even listen to it. Carney should be ashamed of himself as a producer -- he forced the Sheepdogs into the now-omnipresent "Howlin' For You" formula, which is NOT ground the Dogs should be treading. I like my Sheepdogs as a 2012 version of the Guess Who, not Black Keys carbon copies.

I do really enjoy some tracks on the new album though. "Never Gonna Get My Love" is a real highlight, those harmonies are fantastic, and a great sweeping slide guitar part too. It's also hard not to love the infectious "I Need Help", and the riff on "How Late How Long" would make the Allman Brothers proud.

Overall, a decent collection featuring some great individual tracks, but L+B was more of an "album" to me, and a great one at that.
Title: Re: The Sheepdogs
Post by: alienlanes on Nov 19, 2012, 10:45 PM
Learn + Burn is definitely better than the new one. I think there is just too much Black Keys influence on the new album - and that instrumental track is a total Allman Brothers rip off, like a 2012 version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.

However, these guys are really nice, down to earth. it's cool for them that they won the rolling stone award, but I am sure with it they ended up losing some of their own freedom.
