I thought this might deserve its own thread. Forgive my indulgence.
So, after reading the RS article, the American Songwriters interview, seeing the VH1 Storytellers setlist, and from other various sources and whatnot, we have 7 tracks from the new album "Ciruital" identified:
Victory Dance- "the slow-building, spooky opener, (with drummer Patrick Hallahan working his high-hat with Neil Peart-like sleekness)"- RS
Wonderful- "the gorgeous ballad"- RS
My Morning Jacket - Wonderful(The Way I Feel) (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFyelklEanQ#ws)
Holdin' on to Black Metal- "augmented by massed female voices and what sounds like wah-wah-ed horns — a combo that lands the song somewhere between "Superfly" and "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)."- RS
Friends Again-
Friends Again (encore #2) - My Morning Jacket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-qx2x_5FNg#)
Out of My System- "power-poppy... originally intended to be played by Muppets: An exec recruited My Morning Jacket to record music for a new version of the Electric Mayhem band (the one with Animal on drums), promising a Gorillaz-style tour where MMJ would play behind a curtain while Muppet holograms bashed away onstage. The psyched band began writing and demo'ing, but the exec got fired and the project disappeared. (In any case, the lyrics of "Out of My System" — "They told me not to smoke drugs, but I didn't listen" — probably wouldn't have worked out.)"- RS
Movin' Away- only those at VH1 Storytellers can speak to this, I guess.
Circuital- "The album's least concise moment is the title track, which weighs in at more than seven minutes, beginning with a circular guitar riff over a drum-machine beat, before blasting into multiple sections that came together one day during a jam in James' basement."- RS
Circuital - My Morning Jacket - KFC Yum! Center - 10.29.10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gdcckPsvmQ#ws)
"With trippy keyboards, twisted pop hooks and fuzzed-out guitar attacks, Circuital (the album) feels like the culmination of the sonic adventures the band began with 2005's Z — while also capturing the power and dynamics that have made MMJ one of the greatest live bands of their generation. "This record feels like a couple of steps forward of what we'd been doing in terms of overall sound," says guitarist Carl Broemel, who made a point of mostly improvising his jaggedly powerful solos on the new record, rather than composing them as usual."- RS
Also, note the RS article says Circuital will come in at about 10 minutes shorter than EU.
Here are the approximate running times of the studio albums:
TTF 57:55
AD 74:18
ISM 72:08
Z 47:24 (52:06 w/Chills bonus track)
EU 55:41
C 46:00-ish

I found the first published version of lyrics to Circuital online just minutes ago. I haven't had a chance to verify.
CircuitalSpinning out, gracefully
Going nowhere, quickly
I'm older, day by day
Still going back to my childhood way
Circuital
Round and round patiently
Getting lost by the guide
And I'm all worked up over nothing
Circuits
All over me now
You make my body ache
I'll keep it 'til it growls
Circuits
You're like the end of the moon
But you got to be modest
And I don't know what to do
Well you can play open the windows
Or you can blow them up
Say you still cry on
Or crying still moved on
You think you'll find yourself out there
Out in the dying spread
It's somebody's adult
Over the systems
I disappear into the vacuum
Followed reality
The way you can't lose nothing
Then nothing can be gained
Well maybe we can cut it
But you're spinning around
Out on the circuits
Over the hollow grounds
Out on the circuits
Over the hollow grounds
Even though it's the same place
That we started out
Act like we're in the same place
Act like we're in the same place
That we starting out
Let her know
Thanks John. I for one am super excited for this album and while I will buy the vinyl the first moment I can, there is no way I can wait to hear the album on release day if things start to leak out. Those of us who have already seen Circuital, Wonderful and Friends Again live are certainly not going to be disappointed.
Actually, I don't think anyone on this forum will be disappointed with the new album (with one notable H exception). Just a feeling. Bring it on.

Really? I hadn't had a chance to go over it yet. It was from one of the many lyrics sites out there, don't recall which one. I noticed earlier attempts at the lyrics had gaps, so maybe this can assist in filling those gaps?
I made an attempt at the lyrics after T5, they are on the other lyrics thread....but here's what I think they are...please feel free to make adjustments.

I'd always imagined Circuital as the first song on the album, with that intro... this upstart Victory Dance has a lot to live up to! ;)

Speaking of strange recording locales, how does a gymnasium located within the sacred confines of an actual church grab you?
Weird, huh?
But that's where Jim James and his band My Morning Jacket chose to track their upcoming "Circuital" set, their sixth, in their hometown of Louisville, Ky. The record was produced by James himself, along with Tucker Martine. And they're doing something equally unusual to promote it.
MMJ are launching a countdown to the album's April 12 release, something truly for the fans.
Starting now, the group will give away six weekly downloads. The first five will be live songs culled from last October's weeklong run at New York's Terminal 5 club. And during the sixth week, the free download will be a brand-new song from "Circuital."
All you need to do is drop by their website and punch in your e-mail address. Such a deal!
a tweet from Questlove of The Roots:
"ok. now this job is payin off in spades jim just hit me off w/ "holding on to black metal" by (new @mymorningjacket) lovin this."

With regards to April 12th, I think you could interpret (Or missinterpret) the mmj/T5 verbage as a release date.
And Questlove makes me think that Black Metal is going to be our Steam/Dondante/Touch Me of Circuital.
I think it finally hit me tonight that a new mmJ ALBUM is only just moments away......ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh summmer 2011...... :o

Creepy, BH. I was just thinking and about to post the same thought, with no one around tonight, and BOOM, you beat me to it. Clearly, it was a misinterpretation of the release of the download from Circuital on April 12, though it is the only Tuesday of the download dates, and album releases are on Tuesdays. Nonetheless, I think the most realistic statement thus far on release date is from the L'ville blog for "late May". I guess I got "carried away."
PS- I'm falling in love with your Jim James Top 40 three-disc comp all over again. I especially liked hearing Butch Cassidy after all of the recent excitement over our first taste of T5 soundboard gold. Where was the JJ T40 version from?

Id agree its probably the less interested misspeaking, but I guess we'll find out.
If that statement is true, that would likely mean that the song Circuital would be released on the 12th, as well as the album. When you think about it like that, ehh, Im guessing probably no.
On the other hand, Q? comments have me pumped to hear this Black Metalsong :bath:

That Camden show was actually supposed to be the day before, it got rained out. But not before we drove all the way down there for it.... Then drove home and back down the next day.
Regarding the April 12 "release" date cited above, I see that Amazon shows April 12 as the release date of ISM, Z, and EU on vinyl, I assume reissues or perhaps surplus picture discs?

(The only thing that sucks about this is that my predictions are almost ALWAYS wrong, so I'm going to say this won't happen, and then maybe it will.)

I love that the new album was partly named because they were playing in a circle together live......sounds bleeding together until this huge lightbulb flickers and starts to glow.
10 songs eh? I like it, seeing as we already knew a 46 minute runtime. Longer MMJ songs are better MMJ songs.
New article in Rolling Stone (Issue 1127, March 31, 2011)
Spring Music Preview, p. 30
My Morning Jacket
Circuital
Late May/Early June
Tracked mostly live in a Louisville, Kentucky, church gym, MMJ's sixth album "came out sort of easy," says frontman Jim James. Songs such as the groove-driven "The Day Is Coming" and the delicate "Slow Slow Tune" give the record a more laid-back feel than 2008's Evil Urges. Drummer Patrick Hallahan delivers his most restrained performances yet, leaving more room for bassist Two-Tone Tommy to stretch out. "I would give them very simple demos," says James. "There's something so special about just playing in the room with everybody and letting it be what it's going to be."
So, updated track list (9 tracks known):
The Day Is Coming- "groove-driven"- RS
Slow Slow Tune- "delicate"- RS
Victory Dance- "the slow-building, spooky opener, (with drummer Patrick Hallahan working his high-hat with Neil Peart-like sleekness)"- RS
Wonderful- "the gorgeous ballad"- RS
Holdin' on to Black Metal- "augmented by massed female voices and what sounds like wah-wah-ed horns — a combo that lands the song somewhere between "Superfly" and "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)."- RS
Friends Again- debuted in Birmingham on April 21, 2010 (with me in the 4th row!)
Nice! The lack of friends again being mentioned anywhere despite it being played before makes me wonder if it made the cut.
Tracklist, I predict, will look something like this:
Victory Dance
Out Of My System
Wonderful
Friends Again
Moving Away
New Song
Slow Slow Tune
Holdin' on to Black Metal
Circuital
The Day Is Coming
Baseless speculation ;)
Also, its exciting that we're hearing descriptions of most all the tracks before the album. In the run-up to Evil Urges, the same set of songs got the spotlight on preview, and the unknown ones tended to underwhelm... this makes me think they're all highlights!
I am so god damn excited for Holdin on to Black Metal. It sounds ridiculous.

I feel like i will want to cut school (ok, miss work) and rush out, buy it and bring it home for a spin on the turntable. The anticipation of a new album and the soon-to-be-here spring is a big reason to smile.

I think you're right. I also thing "Black Metal" is going to be the song the blows the hinges off the door on this record, kind of like Wordless and Highly Suspicios did on the last two records.
the title "Holdin' on to Black Metal" alone is awesome. There can't be a song with that title that blows. Can't wait to hear it.

I was wondering that, but don't forget that our only real source of track info is Rolling Stone. Maybe they just didn't think of it as a highlight.
I will be highly upset if friends again gets cut. Didn't they play it at EU T5? That means it wasn't thrown away I think

They did. They also played oxen a bunch of times before Z came out, so I don't think that means too much. I'm not saying I think it got cut. But it has me wondering.

Seems like I'm in the minority on this one but I really don't care for that song too much. Perhaps a studio makeover can remove some of the campiness from it a little but otherwise I'd be glad to take it as a bonus vinyl track while songs yet unheard make the Final Cut.

I'm with you on this one. I do like the jam in it but not really feeling the
doobydoobydoo-ness of it.

AMEN... brother..
Is it not a bit strange that a release date for Circuital hasn't been announced yet?
Not sure if it has already been posted, but I saw this in Rolling Stone's Spring Music Preview and it looked like fresh news to me:
QuoteTracked mostly live in a Louisville, Kentucky, church gym, MMJ's sixth studio album "came out sort of easy," says frontman Jim James.
EDIT - Well, I'm an idiot. Should have looked on the previous page before posting. But hey, there's no excitement like double excitement.
Yeah, you excited me again for the song titled "the Day is Coming" that tune just has the name to do some destruction! :D
anyone think that the "eminence front" intro that the guys played last spring on tour might make its way to the album somehow? when i saw the "holding on to black metal" song title i thought immediately of that intro.

that would be awesome. that intro was awesome.
Isn't the eminence front thing a who cover?
I agree with the above post. Friends Again isn't that bad, but it's probably not making an album.

The intro is not a cover, but merely quite reminicient of The Who's "Eminence Front", IMHO. I doubt we'll see it on Circuital. On the other hand, I expect to see Friends Again as one of the tracks on the new album. I also expect to be wrong with some of my assumptions. ;D

judging from the time they played that short intro jam.. i'm thinking that was the first part of a really badass song in the making.. then they went back to the studio and recorded it with a bunch of hot chicks (female backing vocals)
So holdin' on... is 4:19
and circuital is 7:16
that leaves an average of about 4 minutes per song for the rest of the record. I'm hoping for something else at least as long as circuital.

How do we know Holdin' On is 4:19? Has it been released?
FROM NPR......
Today, we unveil the title cut from the upcoming My Morning Jacket album, Circuital. The full-length record comes out May 31 (you'll be able to preview it in our First Listen series starting May 23).
We asked singer Jim James about the new record. He wrote back:
There is a certain feeling you get in your mouth when you drink water or milk; it's like your mouth knows that they belong there. They mesh right in. Now, I'm no scientist, but I feel the molecules in milk and water are more circular or soft, rolling, wave-like — more akin to the cells already existing in your body, far different from the triangular pointed saw-wave feeling you get when you drink a fizzy water or a beer or something bubbly that clashes with the body. A feeling that's not necessarily bad — sometimes that clash is fun. That's why we love those things, but we need the water and the milk to live. As we worked on Evil Urges, our last album, we strove to make the experience fizzy and jarring and disorienting, and hopefully in a way that was fun for the listener. But as life goes on and changes you, you change the music you make. As we were working on this new album, Circuital, I felt in my body and mind that its molecules were more easily absorbed in a natural and nourishing way. And hopefully, it will feel the same way to you as you listen.
