i'm gonna throw in a sleeper
Amos Lee - Mission Bell (1/28/11)
give it a spin once all the way thru (or buy it on itunes for a $7.99 this week only deal) and tell me what you think. i'm surprised that i like it..
Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for my Halo
Yuck - Yuck
The Sheepdogs - Learn and Burn
The Low Anthem - Smart Flesh
Middle Brother - Middle Brother
Man, I can only think of two albums that make my list right now. Sheepdogs would but I thought that was a 2010 release.
1. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears - Scandalous
2. Pharoahe Monch - W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) - Aww man I needed this one!
Many more to come as this seems to be a great year for music. I'm sure Clockwork Angels and Circuital would make the list. ;)
Looking forward to hear the new Rural Alberta Advantage.
Drive By Truckers- Go Go Boots
Middle Brother
Lucinda Williams - Blessed
Willie Nile- The Innocent Ones

Wasn't sure if Learn and Burn was originally 2010. Was there possibly a re-release?
I've heard increasing rumors that Clockwork Angels will not get released until Spring 2012 :-\.
I think I read that from an interview with Geddy who pretty much said they're half done and had plans to complete and release it in late 2011 but at that time they did not set the dates for the 2nd leg of the Time Machine Tour which has pushed the progress on the album back quite a bit.
Awaiting Sweatboard's Rush wrath.

I don't keep up w/ the release dates but...

No Dynamite Steps? Give it another try.
1. Jessica Lea Mayfield - Tell Me
2. Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes
3. Middle Brother - S/T
Have not heard the Amos Lee, the Radiohead or the Kurt Vile.
Anybody buy that Soundgarden Live on I5 disc that just came out?

I forgot this even came out. I just haven't been in the mood to really get into it yet. I'll give it a try soon.
I think this is all I've gotten from this year so far:
Radiohead - The King Of Limbs
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean
Radiohead
R.E.M.
Iron & Wine

Black Love, Part II. Gets better with every listen and sent me on a Dulli frenzy. I've now become convinced that Teenage Wristband is the greatest rock song ever recorded. And nice to see you DB - hope all is well (safe) with friends and relatives.
some fav's so far
Tape's N 'Tapes - Outside
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde
Devotchka - 100 Lovers
Over the Rhine - The Long Surrender

Cheers DB! It's been too long since I've said that. I must've not seen your post or I would've responded earlier. I like that all of her albums are so different. It has room to grow on me still, but I do love this song:
PJ Harvey - The Last Living Rose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWBrWhrKchQ#ws)
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Scandalous
J. Mascis - Several Shades Of Why
Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now
Low Anthem - Smart Flesh
Most Disappointing anthing DBT related...Go Go Boots and Isbell's album..really disappointed in both.
For me there are currently 4 with many more to come......
1) Go Go Boots by DBTs
2) S/T by Middle Brother
3) Smart Flesh by The Low Anthem
4) Kiss Each Other Clean by Iron and Wine
obviously MMJ will be on this list soon and I also feel The Felice Brothers new one Celebration, Florida will be on my list too.

WElcome to the board Chaqueta! You have some great musical tastes .
Can you say more about the Felice Brothers new one? I am a huge fan and have been wondering if they had a new one in the works. I know they released that Road Mix/ White tape (name?) at shows last year but I understood that to be demos/EP or a toss-off release. I have heard nothing of Celebration thus far.

Had I theoretically listened to the new Fleet Foxes, it would be #3 behind BJL&THB and Pharoahe Monche.

Thank you for the words......yes their new album is out May 10th. Here is the track listing
Fire At The Pageant
Container Ship
Honda Civic
Oliver Stone
Ponzi
Back In The Dancehalls
Dallas
Cus's Catskill Gym
Refrain
Best I Ever Had
River Jordan
on their website they have Ponzi to listen to. It is a bit different kind of poppy but I dig it. They have been a fav band of mine over the years. Yonder is the Clock is one of my fav albums in the last 10 years.
Here is a bit more.....
"Celebration, Florida casts interweaving scenes of dreamy characters and stories, including: a young girl who crimps her hair and spies her dead father driving down the road (the cinematic, roaring "Fire at the Pageant"); shady degenerates who get lost in a mystery surrounding a car (the clamorous groove and carnival horns of "Honda Civic"); a Wall Street scandal hits a little too close to home (the climactic, thunderous synth/sample/drum machine-laden "Ponzi"); and a late night host recounting his rise to fame for his honeybee while traveling in a private jet (the elegantly melancholic, rickety gait of "Dallas")."

Black Joe Lewis kills. I think in general a lot of people don't listen to soul music anymore. It is a shame because there is so much good stuff out there...Scandalous is a great record and even better live.
Well, I'm listening to Black Joe Lewis for the first time and....... HOLY SHIT!!!!!
I had no idea music like this was even still being made.
I love this thread, still need to check out Low Anthem, PJ Harvey, Twilight Singers and Over The Rhine.
My new top 5
1. Iron and Wine
2. Black Joe Lewis
3. Radiohead

I think so. Great songs, I enjoy J's voice more on this than on his electric stuff. The guitar playing is subtle but brilliant. Kurt Vile plays on it and the whole record just has a really nice vibe. When J's electric does cut in during this record it's mindblowing.

Ahh yes, my friend and I had this same discussion rather inebriated this past weekend. There is one verse where it sounds like hand. This then devolved into a heated discussion over whether hand glazing or ham glazing should cost more. We finished our cigars, went back inside, cranked the Honeybears and the night carried on.

Six Organs of Admittance - Asleep on the Floodplain
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Scandalous
Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise
The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
Radiohead - The King Of Limbs
As far as "Last Of The Country Gentlemen" goes, I really admire it, just don't enjoy listening to it as much as others released this year. It really is a great artistic achievement, and deserves the critical praise, but it's just not an album experience that I feel like I want to return to often.
That Josh T. Pearson reminds me a lot of J. Tillman, but the lyrics are a lot more raw/less dreamy. That tune "Honeymoon's Great! Wish You Were Her" tears my heart right out.
Of the 2011 releases so far, I've really only loved Destroyer - Kaputt, Charles Bradley - No Time for Dreaming, Braids Native Speaker, the Twilight Singers - Dynamite Steps and Disappears - Guider. Nothing else has really thrown me for a loop or brought me back for repeated listens, but I still have a lot of listening to do.

2. The Decemberists - The King is Dead
3. Starfucker - Reptillians
4. Cage The Elephant – Thank You, Happy Birthday
5. Telekinesis! - 12 Desperate Straight Lines

just got Warren Haynes so I'm sure that will be up there!
After one and a half listens, the new White Denim has easily shot to the top of my favorites list. Much more refined then their last effort, they seamlessly integrate aspects of garage, punk, math rock, jam band, funk, country/folk and classic rock in a way that never seems disjointed. To top it off, they strike a perfect balance between songwriting and musicianship. Oh how I love their rhythm section!
Don't know how long it'll last but it is my first true AOTY candidate.
Gotta Update:

Absolutely Wolof. Particularly track 5 reminds me of that frantic, layered tribal jam of Akron/Family that segues beautifully in the second half to a Don Caballeroesque mathy jam.
Definitely some moments that bring to mind early Blitzen Trapper as well. Track 4 screams Neil Young and Track 9 had me thinking a young Roger Daltrey was on the mic and so on. So many sounds in one album that rocks. What sets them apart is their musicianship to me. There are some complex rhythmic aspects to a good number of those songs that make them even more exciting.
An impressive album. See you in the White Denim thread! ;)

Black Joe Lewis on Letterman tonight
Still having trouble finding an album that has knocked my socks off but the top 4 are all great. The Felice Brothers' have so many highs on that album that make me ignore the lows. I think the Black Lips will move up after more listens. So many albums I haven't checked out yet and I haven't listened to the new Rival Sons yet. Dawes is so ordinary yet I enjoy listening to it. A sign of me getting old I believe. That Shabazz Palaces is pretty nuts. Kinda reminds me of Cannibal Ox meets dubstep. Good to see Butterfly back up and kickin' ass.
1. White Denim - D
2. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears - Scandalous
3. Pharoahe Monch - W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)
4. Booker T. Jones - Road From Memphis
5. Felice Brothers - Celebration, Florida

Bon Iver- Bon Iver, Bon Iver (still not sure if its called this or just Bon Iver, ha)

6. Middle Brother - S/T
7. Scale the Summit - The Collective
8. Black Lips - Arabia Mountain
9. Dawes - Nothing is Wrong
10. Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
I agree completely about Dawes. And about an album that has knocked me off of my feet this year. I think High Violet and Pope Killdragon may be my favorites this year as well as last. ;D. Anywho, id say my top 3 this year in no perticular order (yet) are...
Bon Iver- Bon Iver, Bon Iver (still not sure if its called this or just Bon Iver, ha)
Fucked Up-David comes to life (not biased, I swear)
Circuital
I really want to hear that Fucked Up! Sounds great. I haven't heard any of the Bon Iver except for the one I heard on the radio today. It sounded OK. My favorite Vernon song is still his cover of Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow). Also Ghosts, if you have some time, check out the Great Horned Owl. He's been putting out a free EP on his website every month this year and kind of reminds me of Strand of Oaks
Ironically, I go to find a link for his d/l and this is on his facebook wall. ;D
This month's EP sounds great so far. It reminds me of Strand of Oaks and Iron & Wine's early work in the studio. I am very excited to share this with all of you.
His d/loadable EPs are along the right column

Ha! Nice, ill check it out. Thanks brotha!
Yes Ruckus, you need to hear David Comes To Life. It's fucking glorious.
Upon further inspection, the Bon Iver album is indeed knocking my socks off. Literally, I had socks on, but they are being knocked off as we speak.
Wouldve never guessed there were Fucked Up fans here. I used to be waaaayyy into hardcore an punk
1. Dawes- Nothing is Wrong
2. Amos Lee- Mission Bell
3. Bon Iver- Bon Iver
4. My Morning Jacket- Circuital
5. Drive By Truckers- Go Go Boots
I really think the first two albums are great. I hadn't listened to any of the Dawes stuff before Middle Brother, but I bought the new album when it came out and was blown away. The Amos Lee album has been played all year in my Jeep.

Just saw Taking Back Sunday last night in Ft. Lauderdale and they were great. Nolan does make the difference cause when I saw them a couple of years ago they were not as good. They played almost every song from Tell All Your Friends and yes the new album is good, it may not change your life but it is still a good listen. I respect that they did not try to make Tell All Your Friends 2.0
For any fans of Dispatch or State Radio, Chad Stokes new solo album "Simmerkane" is pretty solid
<3 Fucked Up
ooh, didn't know White Denim had an album out this year, gotta check that out
starfucker - reptilians
james blake - s/t
toro y moi - underneath the pine
washed out - within and without
sbtrkt - sbtrkt
battles - gloss drop
gil scott-heron & jamie xx - we're new here (i like the instrumental version better)
ott - mir
decemberists - the king is dead
ones that i need to remind myself to listen to more (but i think will belong on this list):
is tropical - native to
cut copy - zonoscope
givers - in light
wire - red barked tree
Not much Antlers around here ???. I can really recommend their newest CD "Burst Apart". It's not as "depressive" as "Hospice" but still very, very beautiful. Absolutely one of my favorites this year so far! Can't stop listening :D. It's especially good when listening with headphones in the dark! ;) As I read somewhere (might be on this forum, dunno): "Who needs Radiohead when you have The Antlers?"
The Antlers - No Widows (album version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKv_mIh1j-8#)
just saw that the antlers are playing in seattle one night that i'm there with nothing to do. might get a ticket (only $15!!!)
1. Wye Oak - Civilian
2. J Mascis - Several Shades of Why
3. Radiohead - The King of Limbs
4. My Morning Jacket - Circuital
5. Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'
This will be my album of the year. I can't see anything topping it.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with liking this B. It's great stuff. Check out The Naked and Famous. Came out last year, but damn its good.
mjk73 - Good call! I have to say that Frank Turner's England Keep My Bones is my album of the year so far as well. Just amazing stuff. The only thing coming out that I can think of that may top it would be Brian Fallon's side project The Horrible Crowes - Elsie.

I'm gonna have to check out this Frank Turner album. I know nothing about him. Just out of curiosity, is there any similarity to any Billy Bragg as far as being kinda folk/punky?

No fam with Billy Bragg, however yes folky/punky. if you're on Spotify, and you should be, you can stream it. It's fantastic.
There have been other favorites, and I'll do a full list closer to the end of the year, but since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, I gotta give a huge shout-out to what I think may go down as the best album of the year:
No Time For Dreaming by Charles Bradley
This man is the real deal. Playing with the Menahan Street Band, no less. It doesn't get any funkier. Soul doesn't come more authentic. Simply put, a magnificent record that needs to be heard by everyone.

Cool, they remixed a TJF song... I dig, thanks!!!
The Joy Formidable kind of remindes me of Silversun Pickups.... The lead singer plays guitar like I would choose to if I had any natural talent.....and she plays the same guitar as thurston moore and robert smith. I finally know how a girl must feel about stephen malkmus
Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Lines
The Belle Brigade - S/T

tsk, tsk for not knowing any Billy Bragg. I'm really enjoying England Keep My Bones as well as the Rock n' Roll EP. There are a few tracks that cross into FM pop but overall, his lyrics and his voice save it for me. Really good stuff!

Surprised Portugal. The Man's album In The Mountain In The Cloud hasnt been mentioned yet. Never really gave them a chance because of the band name I found rather retarded, but in just a week of listening, its become a Top 5 mortal lock for me.
In no order yet, Id say my Top 5 is something like...
Portugal. The Man - In the Mountain In the Cloud
White Denim - D
The Sheepdogs - Learn & Burn
MMJ - Circuital
Rival Sons - Pressue & Time
not far off would be...
Cults - Cults
Felice Brothers - Ponzi
JEFF the Brotherhood - We Are The Champions
My new favorite album I cannot stop listening to is American Goldwing by Blitzen Trapper. I have followed them for years and love all of their albums but this one is superior to all others. I have a feeling it is gonna get them out there in a big way. The songs Fletcher and Love the Way You Walk Away are just unreal.

Has it leaked or something? Because I thought it would be released in September. But I'm glad to hear it sounds great! Destroyer of the Void was OK I think, but I never really gotten into that album. I love Furr and Wild Mountain Nation though. Maybe I need to give Destroyer of the Void more chances ;). Does the new album sound more like their earlier stuff, or is it completely different, or...?

Yeah my list has been turned upside over the last few months. I actually listened to a lot of Smart Flesh this summer on the airplane. Forgot how beautiful an album that is. Couldn't believe that Lufthansa had the whole album under their folk/country category!

I can think of a few. Although Gouldsmith is great........Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit imo is better as is Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper to name two. Also lyricists such as Scott and Seth Avett, Ian Felice, Ben Knox Miller(the low anthem) are better imo of those that are similar. I love Nothing Is Wrong and having James Taylor and Benmont Tench help doesn't hurt, I can't get past the second verse in A Little Bit of Everything. It takes a perfect start to a great song and sinks it with the buffet line lyrics. Later it redeems itself some but when I play that album I feel like that song was supposed to be an epic ending and I find myself let down. Just my thoughts.

I can think of a few. Although Gouldsmith is great........Matt Vazquez of Delta Spirit imo is better as is Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper to name two. I heard that song for the first time at Mountain Jam, and was wondering if it was supposed to be funny or silly.... didn't catch every lyric live but I was guessing it was slapstick.... but now own the album and think it's serious and as you said supposed to be epic.

A little harsh no Chaqueta? I agree about the lyrics but then again, that wouldn't be the first time Goldsmith dropped cringe worthy lyrics. I'll actually take the buffet line over the prior verse,
It's a little bit of everything
It's the mountains it's the fog
It's the news at 6 o'clock
It's the death of my first dog
It's the angel up above me
It's the song they don't sing
It's a little bit of everything
Actually the 2nd to last line reminds me of the Goldsmith formula of singing in the negative ;) ;)
Now give me some mashed potatoes and an extra chicken wing ;D
Matt Vasquez's hair is too Flock of Seagulls for me.
(Now, what were we talking about?)

Not so much.........just an opinion. Most of the artists mentioned are compared or discussed in the same circles. I feel of those I mentioned he is the weakest link. He is still great and I love their albums, but the truth when I listen to all with regularity. I feel when the majority hear American Goldwing by Blitzen Trapper they will love Eric Earley even more as a lyricist than they already did. He has a few masterpieces on this album in particular the tune Love the Way You Walk Away. Imo Blitzen is everything Wilco forgot to keep doing many albums back and I am a huge fan of wilco over the years. However just an observation.
These are all great choices. Never heard of Frank Turner. I will definitely check that out.
I just heard the new Girls - Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I am obsessed with "Album" and "Broken Dreams Club" and I am really digging this new one too. I can tell already I will be listening to this new one NON-STOP.
I would also recommend checking out the new The War On Drugs - Slave Ambient.

I think not having to go back to school until May influenced me in trying to grow the mane out, but who knows, maybe it was Matt V

4. Dawes
I've been listening to this a lot and it is almost surpassed Frank Turner for #1 for me. Such a great album.
This is my number one. I can't believe I haven't heard these guys until this year...does any "modern songwriter" write better lyrics?
I can think of a few. Although Gouldsmith is great........Matt Vazquez of Delta Spirit imo is better as is Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper to name two.
I heard that song for the first time at Mountain Jam, and was wondering if it was supposed to be funny or silly.... didn't catch every lyric live but I was guessing it was slapstick.... but now own the album and think it's serious and as you said supposed to be epic.
A little harsh no Chaqueta? I agree about the lyrics but then again, that wouldn't be the first time Goldsmith dropped cringe worthy lyrics. I'll actually take the buffet line over the prior verse,
It's a little bit of everything
It's the mountains it's the fog
It's the news at 6 o'clock
It's the death of my first dog
It's the angel up above me
It's the song they don't sing
It's a little bit of everything
Thats pretty cheez whiz.
I dont have the Dawes album, but since so many seem to dig it I guess Ill have to check it out. Im not familiar enough with Dawes or Goldsmith, but Id more than likely agree with Chaqueta that Vasquez, Earley, and Ian Felice are better songwriters/lyricists
As a big Delta Spirit and Deer Tick fan, also somewhat ashamed to say I still havent gotten around to Middle Brother yet.
War Elephant is quickly approaching BOFD. Its had about 5 spins this week

5) Nine Types of Light-TV on the Radio
I revisited this a couple weeks ago, and for the most part, just cant get into it. Really like the first 2 songs and the single Will Do, but not much outside of that. Its heads and shoulders below Cookie Mountain and Dear Science for me.

I totally agree with your asessment of Goldsmith. I guess I meant letting a couple of uncomfortable verses affect your take on the entire album. I for one am a McCauley whore and am a big fan of DS, FB, BT and LA. I feel ya on Dawes...a notch or two below in my eyes

If there are any 'whether L&B is a '10 or '11 release' forum scuffles, we got each others' backs 8)
Also, if you missed what I said in a post in the Sheeps thread, their album Big Stand is on their site for free download...its almost as good as L&B
need to revive this thread because I get a lot of good suggestions for this:
1. Middle Brother
2. MMJ
3. (probably) Wilco
4. Iron & Wine
5. Bright Eyes - I haven't seen anyone mention this, but I think this is the revitalization of connor. It's the only BE record that I can enjoy anymore, and its damn good.
looking forward to listening to Ryan Adams and TBK and Deer Tick
Is there a release date yet for the new Black Keys album?
I haven't heard anything other than that its happening, but I don't follow the keys religiously or anything so I may be giving wrong info
Fucked Up. David Comes to Life. It's a hell of a thing. Same is true of Frank Turner.

The Whole Love is not only better than the last two, but might be better than A Ghost Is Born.

I'm not a Wilco fan either, but the Art of Almost blew me out of the water and now I listen to them often. It was my gateway drug
Right now:
1. Middle Bro - S/T
2. The Head and The Heart - S/T (2011 subpop official release)
3. Wilco - The Whole Love
4. MMJ - Circuital
Looking forward to: Ryan Adams and Deer Tick.
been loving the new MMJ, Wilco, Fucked Up...I urge anyone just getting into Fucked Up now to look into their first LP Hidden World and the singles they released before that. Easily the best punk band of the new millenium, and Hidden World is a masterpiece
other records on my list:
tune yards - WHOKILL
True Widow - as high as the highest heavens and from the center to the circumference of the earth
The Music Tapes - Purim's Shadows EP
The Men - Leave Home (again for any punk fans on here.....this is THE best punk record of 2011, hands down)
Iceage - New Brigade
Jeff the Brotherhood - We Are The Champions
Cold Cave - Cherish the Light Years
End of a Year Self Defense Family - both singles they've put out this year
Bomb the Music Industry! - Vacation
i'm sure there's more I'm forgetting
I like the cut of your jib.
I'm really digging the new jayhawks lately!!
I've been meaning to check that iceage album out.
It's pretty badass. If you like it, check out The Men immediately.
This list will be all over the place... but so are my tastes so it makes sense to me!
Anthrax - Worship Music
Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee
Mastodon - The Hunter
M83-Hurry up, We're Dreaming is pretty much tied with Bon Iver for my AOTY.

I second this, also Real Estate's "Days" is probably going to work its way into my top 5, I love it so far.
2011 has really been a year of new music to me, mostly thankfully to this board. There have been countless records that I've discovered that aren't from 2011 based on your recomendations. As far as 2011 goes right now:
1. Middle Bro
2. Wilco
3. Circuital
4. Iron and Wine
5. Deer Tick
When 2011 started, MMj was the only band on this list I was listening to. Lucero and Black Keys both have albums due out this year, so this could change. 2012 will kick off with a new Dr. Dog album. Releases have been too good this year.

Only heard bits and pieces and it was quite good. can't wait to get home and give it the full listen.
YEP!!!! the new M83 album is amazing.
White Denim - D (2011)
if you like psychedelic indie rock you have to check these guys out. just heard about them this week.
The White Demin album is terrific.
I really, really like the debut album of The War on Drugs (self-titled). Some songs have a Dylan-esque quality from the writing to the drawl.
M83's new one is really dense. There are some great tracks, and some that take a bit of time to appreciate.

Agreed. Really liking this one.
Belle Brigade new one is good too
And Dawes! Nothing is wrong.
I'm digging Wu Lyf right now.
It's kind of like if Adam Sandler's character on Billy Madison got angry drunk and started a rock band.

I was late on the Middle Bro and gang train, but it all started with Delta Spirit. Saw them twice this year (once opening up for MMJ). They're my favorite of the three. However, the Middle Bro record is,IMO, flawless.

Matt Vasquez's hair is too Flock of Seagulls for me.
(Now, what were we talking about?)
so this is only several months later, but true that. He was my man crush when he had long hair and was studly, and now he looks like he should sing for taking back sunday.
