Now I've heard that people start constructing panty accordions come new album time so here is a thread for discerning, intelligent critiques of the upcoming music of our much adored band.
In this thread, one can air their beefs freely without repercussions so long as that favor is reciprocated in other threads.
I LOVE Circuital. I love the Thai Pop original. I'm still not in love with Black Metal but I feel it will be a live killer! I wonder if the live chorus will be organic or Bo samples.
I'll admit, at first listen I wasn't blown away. However, I have little doubt that by the time it's windows down weather my tune will have changed.
Then again, I was expecting something else. It was a similar sensation as to when you think you pick up a glass of water, and it turns out to be a glass of milk, except you don't realize that until after you take a big gulp
you 2 should get a room

agree and wondering, too
i love black metal...i think this is the path they started down with highly suspicious but figured out over 3 years how to really make it catchy and groovy, as opposed to just a funky song that people love/hate.
i imagine bo will do a lot of sampling on this one, but you'd have to think that they'd want a live horn section rather than sampling that on top of the female choir. which would hopefully mean people get dancefloors, easy morning rebel, and maybe even ONE BIG HOLIDAY with horns!

Why? That would be like when I saw Steely Dan after they had not played in over 20 years. they did Reeling in the Years in a jazz mode with a sax solo instead of a guitar. THEY SUCKED.

I agree with this all Wakebord. Maybe we'll get a taste at Hangout festival. The idea of sampling both horns and vocals seems problematic, particularly because the horns are so pronounced throughout. I still have to listen to my drummer friend bitch about Lay Low after taking him to his 1st show at Merriweather last year. ;) Thankfully they didn't play Highly Suspicious and he didn't figure out what was going on in Wordless. ;D
I have no idea but I can see them doing it with just the choir sample...ok I have no leg to stand on now. ;D
EDIT: What am I even talking about? That song needs all the parts. Looking forward to it!
Oh boy, I think Black Metal is just plain groovy, and I have loved Circuital since first hearing it live.
So, let me just say this -- When Evil Urges came out, having the proud-anxious-parent feeling that I have for these boys, I found myself forcing the like on quite a few of the tracks, if you catch my drift. I can say without reservation, that I have not had that feeling at all for the first two cuts of this album.

But you are in the wrong thread for all your sunshine and happiness. ;) This is for us curmudgeons to be angry for no reason so that we don't have to be reminded by others that we are being angry for no reason.
2 for 2 on circuital so far. black metal is a great groovy song that i will love to drink beer to this summer. i always try to be honest in my assessment of the guy's new songs, and plan on doing the same on circuital.

Completely agree with your reaction with EU. These new songs are so freaking sweet. I wasn't completely sold on either at first, but I freakin love them now. I am really trying to keep myself from listening to them too much. Last night I was in bed with some headphones to listen to Black Metal again. As soon as the initial, "oh wo wo wo..." starts on, I immediately started grinning ear to ear. That song is going to kill live!
I think my sentiments are more in line with Masterplan. The first time you hear it, it's not like you're all "BEST SONG EVAR" but this is pretty cool. Then as you listen to it more and more, you just get it.
For some reason, after hearing the Thai Pop version, I got it.
And, for what it's worth, I love Highly Suspicious and agree that stylistically this is like it's bad ass older brother.

Maybe they'll bust out a rapping skeleton on an upcoming title track over the next decade. Now that would be some forward thinking if a skeleton rapped on the big screen during the interlude to Letting Go of Disco

this is spot on to me. Master Plan definitely grew on me. At first it was the only song I would skip when listening to ISM, but now it's one of my favorites. Circuital was an instant love song, but after listening to BM about 25 times in the past 24 hours I think BM is a better song.
Also I agree with tbd about the EU tracks. Nothing so far on this record has felt forced, I've just loved it.

Boo Yeah!
black metal sounds like an ELO song to me.
When I heard Black Metal, I thought it was this song:
The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhBqkxDvbHs#)
based on what we've heard thru releases and read in reviews and interviews.. this album is probably going to be a pretty good balance between stretched out soaring vocals from jim with powerful guitar jams to the jagged, tightened up experimental side of MMJ that we've all grown to love because it throws us for a loop.. always keeps us coming back to see what's next. "Black metal" naysayers can only come up with the argument that it's not "original" enough or organic enough because it's borrowed. I applaud the band in their ability to pay hommage to their musical inspirations and still find a way to make it into their own beast. I think only a paraplegic would be caught not moving their ass to that song playing thru stereo speakers much less hear it being played live from a band that you know will transfer it well into the live setting.

Thanks for posting this! Ive watched my share of T5 vids every once in awhile, but Im pretty sure I never caught this one since that night...Man, if I can go back 7 months. They jammed out all their long diddies!
..and for the record, OBH should never ever ever be reggaed out
Dark side of Circuital is that drugs will mess your day up so BE careful!
and don't let stuff bring you down too much.
Also on victory dance Jim is like singing to the heavens or whatever he believes in..that one point in the song right before it gets a bit chaotic jim sounds like he is monk or some crazy deep notes... so awesome
Also dark side of Circuital is that everything these days in connected to CIRCUITS!
MMJ is addressing the rapid pace of development we are in right now b.c the internet etc and this 21st century globalized world.
MMJ has put their time into Rock n Roll and this album basically cements them as great b/c they always deliver they still have no album that was a flop.....BAMF
They may not be selling out arena's but I saw em open for Tom Petty in Jersey and they played Circuital and KILLED IT.
MMJ loves playing their outdoor festivals.... I mean who doesn't wanna go play music to thousands of people that want to lose their faces?
I just wanna freak out... BUT I will play it cool for now until MTN JAM

Black Metal makes no sense to me, and Circuital sounds like what would happen if Keyboard Cat and John Mellencamp collaborated. I'm also upset they're probably adding some weird synth and drums to Wonderful. ;D
Black Metal (at first) was a big question mark to me. But I like the fact that it wasn't just so easily palatable and made to be loved. It's hot, sweaty and funky and has grown on me now. But I still haven't listened to the whole song. I want the "album experience".
"Circuital" does indeed have some parts that sound similar to other songs. Most namely, the point of the song that really picks up and starts rolling sounds exactly like Bon Jovi's "Whole Lotta Leaving" riff off 2008's "Lost Highway" album. EXACTLY. But in truth, everything has been done and creating a completely original piece of music that doesn't sound a little like "this or that" is almost impossible and is unrealistic to expect. I think it's artistic and a beautiful song that makes me feel so warm and happy inside when I hear it.
Unlike most here (it appears) I love Evil Urges and it's 70's am radio/soul/funk influences. Highly Suspicious is such a great Prince-type funk/rock jam, Thank You Too is one of my fave MMJ songs ever, and Sec Walkin, Two Halves, I'm amazed, Touch me 2 and Librarian make EU virtually a perfect album IMHO.
But I think MMJ is like a ever evolving ride and I'm in for the long haul. I love when a band grows and evolves and I think this bands evolution has been nothing short of perfect. I'd ask for nothing different. well..... maybe to sit in the corner while Jim cuts some vocal tracks. Then I'll die a happy man.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is it just me or does the new album sound more "indie"-ish than their past albums? They are considered indie-rock, but they never really had an indie sound (if you know what I mean, while indie is an extremely diverse genre, there seems, to me at least, to be a certain quality to the music that gives it distinct indie-ness). I can definitely feel an "indie" vibe with this album though. Like I said, thats not really a terrible thing, since I, generally speaking, like Indie music.
In the CD store I go to they are under Alternative... but then again that store doesn't have an Indie aisle

I know there's an "indie sound", but I've never heard that in the jacket. I haven't listened to Circuital yet, but is it possible the new producer brought that vibe to the album? I think I read this was a first time collaboration with him. They're labelled as Rock in the stores here in VA. But most only know them from the brief period when country radio embraced "I'm Amazed" then tossed em aside when they refused to accept the "country" label. Good for them. They're like a diamond. So many facets. So many sounds.
