See you on the Gulf Shores in 2012!!
GULF SHORES, Alabama — The City Council voted unanimously this afternoon to approve the Hangout Music Festival 2012 application, adding 14 conditions that organizer Shaul Zislin said would improve the event.
The 6-0 approval came after limited discussion about what's expected for next year's festival.
Mayor Robert Craft and Councilman Steve Jones urged Zislin to make musicians aware of the "family friendly" environment of the south Baldwin community, though none of the conditions for approval mentioned that.
"The biggest threat to our reputation is him making sure that he attracts and brings acts in here that continue to reinforce a more family friendly destination," Craft said. "We will not get engaged in who he can and cannot invite."
Next year, the three-day event is slated for May 18-20.
Under the conditions of the festival permit, Zislin must ensure that festival will end at 11 each night; provide free water stations; enhance cell-phone capacity; remove smoking/tobacco displays; and ensure that stage construction is approved by the city 30 days prior to the festival.
The second annual festival this year drew a sold-out crowd of 35,000 people daily and brought an estimated $30 million to Pleasure Island.
Zislin does not want a larger crowd, but he got the OK to expand the footprint of the venue to include a section of Ala. 182, mostly for safety purposes.
Shit guys, time to book condos.
Music ends at 11... Boooooooo
did the music any later last year? I can't really remember...lot of hazy moments.
I don't really think that is a huge deal..they will just start the music earlier...and it gives up more time to party later.
They ended at 12 last year. That was my one complaint. After the music on the beach at our condo was like a terrible episode of senior year high school spring break.
I think us old fogies enjoyed getting back to the condo and going out to the beach at nght or hot tubbing it or tying darkglow to a chair, that kind of thing...i was glad to be back by 1.
poor darkglow, yall had one of them too???

Our condo was a blast post festival. I can't wait.
I want Wilco this year. that is my #1 pick.

Damn, if you get classified as an old fogie, then I'm afraid of what Category I will fall into when I'm at Hangout next yr!

This announcement makes me so happy. So, so, happy. Hangout 2011....a brilliant time. Tying darkglow to a chair was a definite highlight. Then the tying evolved into an insane jostling at about 2:00 AM.

I read that the hangout said they will have NO repeaters from last year. That excludes MMJ, Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Panic, and which ever other bands are often on the festival circuit.

that means no Paul simon on the beach either
well i guess i wont hold out for this one anymore. They have been taking forever to release any info. ive just been guessing and kinda stalking other bands tour dates trying to figure out who will play this year. oh well, at least i got to experince last years amazing feat!

experienced my BEST FESTIVAL/CONCERT moment ever, the festival was right around the time a friend introduced me to MMJ, then I saw them live here... there was no going back after that ::) and now the obsession just keeps gettin stronger
seeing MMJ on the beach playing songs from Circuital for the first time was amazing, and PAUL SIMON was amazing. I don't know if any festival line up could ever top last years hang out line up for me. It really was a great time.
that being said, I´ll be out of the country this year for Hangout and Wakarusa, so this year I´m already pretty set on doing Jazz Fest, Starry Nights and Forecastle. I´m bummed that I won't be doing any of the major camping ones.

hangout '11 forever man! <3 too many special moments from that trip to even try to recite.
it would of been tough for them to top last years line up, although its disappointing they wont be doing any repeats , it will push me to try a different festival... and jazz fest is the first runner up. Excited to start plannin my first trip to New Orleans!!
Jack White confirmed as the the first artist so far....very nice!
interesting.....

the entire lineup is up now, except for a 3rd headliner to be announced.
I think it looks pretty darn good. Delta Spirit, Dawes, Dr Dog, Alabama Shakes, Devil Makes 3, Gary Clark Jr, M Ward, Wilco, Jack White.....
Delta Spirit, Dawes, Dr Dog, Alabama Shakes, Wilco, all on the beach?!
WHY am I not attending this?
agreeed! you must attend this heavenly event, but personally nothing will ever top last year... and every festival is compared to last years hangout 8)
My Morning Jacket- Steam Engine Hangout Fest 2011! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CntpF4BvYo4#)
the headliners are terrible this year (so far) *other than Jack White--but he's not headlining?...but the other bands (the ones Mahgeeta named) are great..
however, evil is right--nothing will compare with last year...or FORECASTLE this year

I agree with you on the headliners. I'd like to go see Big Freedia, but maybe she'll be on the bonnaroo lineup. As much as I enjoy going to the beach, this festival isn't getting me there.
I don't really get why Wilco isn't headlining instead of String Cheese Incident. I mean, I enjoy String Cheese, but it's WILCO for goodness sakes!!

because you're seeing most of those bands separately at their real (full-length) shows, plus you're saving your money for forecastle...also, all that sun causes wrinkles...
any other questions?

and Futurebirds and Coheed (a very guilty pleasure). Definitely prefer this years to last years. I think it's great that they are expanding the grounds but still capping it at 35000. AND AN AIR CONDITIONED DANCE TENT!? Let the good times roll
Wilco, Flaming Lips, Jack White, Dawes, Delta Spirit...
Good line-up, don't think it's enough to get me down there especially with Forecastle already booked.

Damnit I'd love to see Coheed again.
Forecastle lineup better blow my socks off because this festival is looking damn good.
Have to say, it'd take more than that to get me back. First off, last years line up blew this years out of the water. Also, if you dont already have a condo, good luck with those shuttle lines. Hangout last year was insanely awesome, but I don't think I'll be going back ever unless the line up is undeniable. Something about the crowd it draws turns me off.

i can't imagine how bad those shuttle buses are---
i know how bad the entrance lines were just walking in--hope they get that a little better this year. waiting almost 1 hour 45 min to get in on Fri was ridiculous and cost us rail spots (lol). ..only Seth got in early enough!
Am I missing something? I don't see Delta Spirit on the list. If they are playing I may try to convince my wife to go. If not, it would be very a tough sell.

I stayed at a condo close enough, but on Sunday Nig I talked to someone I. Line that said 3 hours for the peeps that stay until the very end. FUCK THAT. My one complaint with the actual hangout crew and whoever put it on is the organization. Though I hear they're expanding this year which could help.

I'm the one who mentioned them above, so sorry if I started a bad rumor. I don't see them listed on the Hangout site. I do see them listed on a few local articles. Do a google for "hangout festival lineup 2012 delta spirit" and you'll see a few. For example,
http://gulfcoast.myfoxal.com/news/arts-culture/105656-hangout-festival-announces-2012-lineup (http://gulfcoast.myfoxal.com/news/arts-culture/105656-hangout-festival-announces-2012-lineup)
This year's line up includes Matthews Band, Wilco, the Alabama Shakes, the Flaming Lips, Jack White, Steve Winwood, Chris Cornell, STS9, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Randy Newman, Yelawolf, Mavis Staples, the String Cheese Incident, G. Love & Special Sauce, Skrillex, Mac Miller, Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly, Paul Oakenfold, Kaskade, Delta Spirit, Dr. Dog, Dawes, M. Ward, Coheed & Cambria, Switchfoot, Julian Marley, Cage the Elephant, Zed's Dead, Sphongle, Young the Giant, Gary Clark Jr., Rebelution, Allen Stone, Big Freedia, The Devil Makes Three, Futurebirds, Hey Rosetta!, Sleeper Agent, The Lumineers, Archnemesis, Tribal Seeds, Rich Aucoin, Jamie Bergeron and Dispatch. I'd get confirmation from a better source if I were you. Convincing your wife to go and then learning while there no Delta Spirit sounds very bad!
i'm really not impressed at all...i really think all of the ones i want to see on this list have a pretty good chance of being at forecastle...good choice boys
They had me at Jack White and Wilco. Yes last year had bigger names but I think there are some great bands here...Shakes, Devil Makes Three, Dawes, Gary Clark Jr..etc. I can't wait to see them on the beach.
I had the most fun I've ever had at a Fest last year..I just don't think you can beat the atmosphere of this Fest...and with 30+ bands and a headliner still to go it will only get better.
Our condo is a 5 min walk to the Fest so no shuttles and I didn't have any issues getting into the Fest last year...I can't wait!!

Thanks for the update! Looking at Delta Spirit's schedule, it is certainly a possibility they could be added. They are playing AL/LA in April, so maybe they are being held off the list so it doesn't hurt the ticket sales for those shows.

Our condo was in the "walking stretch" last year and that was awesome. Those condos for me are like RVs and bonnaroo... Only way I'll go back.
The only festival I've ever liked so much that I'll go back without regard to the line up is Wakarusa.
I just saw an email that said that Red Hot Chili Peppers is now one of the headliners.
The day this Dubstep fad passes, and with it Skillrex, can't come soon enough.
The Hangout bro-fest looks to be a brotastic experience.
I'm with you 115% chode.
Unfortunately Forevastle WILL have a couple electronic acts
RHCP on the beach is the best thing going for the hangout this year IMO

I don't mind electronic music, but dubstep is the musical equivalent of an overly-hoppy beer - it just adds a gimmick to disguise the lack of actual quality craftmanship and skill.
Also they have the absolute most annoying fans. Maybe it provides an auditory high or something, because they act like it is the greatest form of music ever created and incessantly push it on you with one phrase, "you like dubstep, bro?" It's like perpetually being in the third level of inception and not being able to wake up.

RHCP actually makes me wish I could go somewhat.
RHCP + Wilco + F'Lips DSOTM is a nice triple threat for me. Not to mention the undercard has some. DMB, JAck White, and SCI just aren't doing it for me though. I know Jack white is Jack White, but we haven't heard his solo work yet... Give me the Racentuers. For me festival line ups rely heavily on Headliners that I wouldn't otherwise see. Which is Paul Simon was way more exciting that Wilco or F'Lips (2 of my favorite).
End rant.

haha agreed. It would be hard to top last years hangout, I just hope they work out issues such as the line to get in everyday, the cramped feeling i got once inside the site, and of course the overflowing port a potties!

yup
Same here...I was going no matter who was on the lineup but Wilco and Jack White...I'd pretty much go to any festival that has those two on the bill.
I've only heard two Jack songs so far it is already better than the Raconteurs for me. I would've loved the Dead Weather but I'll take Jack...you know he's going to bring it..and bring a great band along with him.
I don't really rely on headliners for festivals...last year I sat in the back and listened to a few Paul Simon songs....I wasn't a huge Foo's fan but I did enjoy their set and I'm not a big WSP fan...but I still had a blast. I actually like this years headliners better.
I think people first reaction is "not as good as last year.." which right now is probably true a little...but I think it is closer than people think...or at least I think so.
also anyone going to this...make it a point to see the Devil Makes Three...they are so good.

this festival was such a great experience for me... as well as outside of the festival itself. THe road trip, the time spent on the beach and celebrating our favorite bands with my music loving friends was the best vacation EVER ( not to mention this was the place i fell in to with yours truly, mmj, my first live show) the line up wont bring me back this year, but I will always appreciate hangout 2011 and i would highly reccomend going if you dig some of the headliners. JAHWW WONT REGRET ITT YO!!
done gushing over hangout's awesomeness for now ;) Forecastle dont let me down!
plus steve winwood folks! come on!! ;D

All of you beach seeking festival goers keep an eye on DeLuna Fest this year. http://delunafest.com/ (http://delunafest.com/) It has been pretty weak the last two years, but seems like this might be the big one for them. I've come across some pretty credible leaks and this looks like it's going to be pretty huge.
SCI at the Ryman was great. They brought out Sam Bush, Andy Hall, and some other dude for an all out shreddin bluegrass ho-down. The Bonnaroo show was fun too, floating T-Rex, human sized balloon balls, a dude in a jet-pack, moth-man floating in the air on balloons. SCI on the beach will be one of the highlights of the entire festival. "yuck" is a terrible word to use here.
STS9 anyone?
According to Pollstar Delta Spirit and The Heartless Bastards have been added. More additions coming this week. Love both these bands.
Kascade, Umphrey's, Delta Spirit, Heartless Bastards, Greyboy Allstars, Givers
Yupie! I have been waiting for this festival after last event. Finally fun is back. Friends get up and start preparing for the fun.
