I don't think there's a thread started for this yet.
Early bird tickets are on sale today for $110 / 2 day pass. Organizers promise that this will be the cheapest price available ever. Sale ends tomorrow, via ticketmaster, password NEWFOLK.
Lineup to be announced in late Feb.
I'm in for sure- can safely say that this will be a highlight unless the lineup SEVERELY disappoints. 09, 10, and 11 lineups were all killer and I'll be happy with anything close to that. I also think there's a good chance of a YY solo set.
with not going to forecastle i'm holding out for an attractive Newport lineup. i went in 2010 for the first time and had a great time. probably one of the best festvials i've been to.
mrs. headhunter and I have been to NFF often over the past 20 years and have seen Jim there both times. If he will be there in 2012, we will be there again for sure.
Waiting for the lineup to hit but there's a good chance we will be going again since we missed last year.
Lineup will be stellar as always. I missed out on Early Bird because of work but I'm going for sure. Already booked the Newport Harbor Hotel. Last year was incredible. In two nights at the Newport Blues Cafe which is a pretty small bar I saw sets from Trampled by Turtles, Felice Brothers, Dawes, Jonny Corndawg, Middle Brothers and Deer Tick who hosted..and M Ward joined Deer Tick on stage. It was incredible..probably my highlight of 2011. Nevermind the actual festival which is great.
also my friend Steve from kitchensessions.net does the promo video for Newport and I'm in the one this year. There will be a lineup announcement party with some of the bands this year like last year soon...It was in Cambridge, MA last year.
Since we won't be going to Forecastle, I think we will try to make Newport. Never been, but I've been told by many people, including Headhunter, that this is a great festival.

Yes, I think it is my absolute favorite Festival. No other seems to have the same fun, relaxed vibe. And the lineup is never disappointing.
I went in 2010 and it was an absolute joy. Dying to make it back at some point, but with Forecastle it looks like its not in the cards for 2012.
I may try to do this. Right now I'm planning on 5 other 2012 festivals. If I do this I may be going three weekends in a row to different festivals. Could be tough but I've always wanted to try it out.
Newport has the best vibe...I love the setup and taking the boat taxi over is just so amazing. Can't wait for this year.

I am very excited too. I can't wait to see the lineup. If you hear anything about where the release party is, let me know. It'd be fun to make that. I'll get booed off the board the Forecastle thread, but I'm as excited to see who is playing here as I am that festival.

true dat. forecastle is a no go for me so newport is looking quite nice. i stayed about 20 minutes away from the festival in 2010 and it worked out well. I found the hotels in Newport out of my price range.
I agree with you Headhunter. Probably my favorite festival and this is coming from someone who went to 3 bonnaroos.

I'm going to Forecastle and Hangout and I'm am just as excited for this. Make sure you check out the late night stuff too..it was amazing last year. I have a friend who I mentioned earlier...he got hired by Newport to do the videos..he did the lineup announcement video and the promo so he will give me the info on the release party. last year David Wax..Brown Bird and a few others played. I think the lineup will be really strong this year.
My friend also had the "Official Newport Afterparty" and I believe he will again this year...lot going on after the fest is over.

I stayed in a hotel a little bit away last year and some previous years....the only thing that makes it not worth it is there are NO taxi's in Newport. Last year after the Deer Tick bar show we got stranded for like 2 hours trying to get a cab back to our hotel which was less than 2 miles away. So this year I sucked it up and booked an expensive hotel. My wallet will not like it but I had to do it after last year.
Baring any tragedy Mrs. Wolof and I will be in for sure...we try to never miss it considering we live 30 mins away...

Nice! It'll be good to see you again. My wife and kids are joining for one day, and I'll do the other "solo". Waiting for the schedule to figure out which is which.
I'll start a Roll Call once the lineup is announced. I'm hoping at that point we can move this thread from "other music" to "the shows" ;) ;)
Yeah, it would be great to see you Mahg and others. There's also a couple in the Newport area that Carol and I met at the Jacket show in Montreal, and I'll have to connect with them.
Anyway, grateful for any advice on where to stay.
Not sure if we'll drive or fly. It's about an 8-hour drive from Ottawa to Rhode Island. Alternatively, we could fly to Boston or Providence and hire a car for the weekend.
Can't wait to see the lineup. I stuck between buying tickets now or waiting until the lineup is released at the end of the month.
The lineup is being released next Wed night at a party in Cambridge. Info on their facebook page.
I saw on another thread that Bold99 is going. I have 2 tix also and hope to be there if I can juggle around some work stuff. If not I hope he gives us live updates!!
Lineup to be released midnight 3/1. I can't see YY not on it, but wonder if it will be solo, MoF, or New Multitudes.
ps with Forecastle lineup coming around the same time, what a week!

Yippee!!!! More money to spend on festivals! (as if Jazz Fest and Forecastle isn't enough).

Newport is just so damn expensive...
and they only sell beer on one pier (
raise your hand if you're a lush!)..but I heard these after parties/shows are going to be insane...
Jim will play on seven different stages in one day---I could follow him around but that would REALLY violate the restraining order..

And here I was thinking as the lineup was announced how mahg33ta probably had a raging train boner even 3 bottles of wine couldn't contain
I just read bold99's lineup party summary on the other thread and my raging train boner resurfaced.
Holy hell what a lineup. Must attend.
Does anyone know if Newport tends to sell out quickly, or is it likely safe to wait a few days on tix whily I pull the trip together?

I'm totally with you g33ta, in comparison, the only band I'd miss is Wilco and most likely MMJ will play a shorter set at Newport.....I have successfully avoided seeing Wilco my whole life and it continues through this summer, for absolutely no reason at all, I love Wilco, always have! Same with the Black Keys (but feel like i missed my opportunity with them now that they are playing stadiums) but I digress.
So who wants to finance my trip to Newport this year?
This lineup is so good. Two of my favorite more local bands Brown Bird and Joe Fletcher too. Oh and Spider John Koerner.

I would do some research and check out Spider John Koerner. The man is a legend...and everyone should see Charley Bradley's set.
It really is an incredible line up. I hope to make this year my first NFF. Itd get quite expensive for me though with airfare and hotels and whatnot. I'm living in south America for awhile this summer so I wasn't planning on making any extra expensive trips but DAMN
I'm thinking my husband would be fine with me going. I talked about it with him this morning. I really want to go. I'm just going to have to spend a little time deciding. It is a great lineup.
Very tempted to go to this one instead of Forecastle. My wife and I have never been to the Northeast. Maybe do a day or two in NYC and then head up for two days of amazing music. Going to sell the wife tonight. Had her talked into Forecastle, but may change gears now.
Didn't see any comments yet on Punch Brothers. Chris Thile is easily one of the best Mandolin players alive and a terrific performer. I came across this video of them covering "Reptilia" by the Strokes a few weeks ago.

both are pretty much MMJ-curated but Forecastle has the added burden of trying to attract 30k people. Newport only needs 10k and knows many show regardless of the lineup. Lastly, bands there take huge pay cuts to play so the quality level is high for a "smaller" festival.
After a 24 hour cooling off period where I was considering skipping Forecastle due to the overlap in lineups and shit it will catch me on the home front, I've come to my senses and back to trying to pull off both.

Thanks for the info. My wife and I basically came to that conclusion last night. She would really like to tour the mansions and check out the scenery. We could always come back and focus on NYC another time. Your post goes a long way to help confirm our thinking. Our only stumbling block now is whether we are ready to leave our 2 yr. old daughter for that many nights. She is extremely active and I'm not sure my parents could handle her for that long.

I did the mansions thing too while I was there. Quite interesting and impressive, but once you've seen 2 of them you've kind of got the idea and might not want to see more. The Cliff Walk they have is pretty fantastic, too. Oh and don't forget to check out Ocean Drive.
If you do end up having a couple days without shows in Rhode Island I'd highly recommend making the trip down to Block Island for a day. It's a small island about 15 miles off the coast of RI. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.

absolutely. the day i'm like "hrmm, i think i will do Forecastle" was the same day Newport lineup came out and yeah, i'm in it to win it with that one. Jazzfest > Newport. Not sure about Forecastle too though.

I'm going to have to stay away from computers during the time of NPP. Seriously bummed I'm going to miss this festival this year. Looking forward to Forecastle, but I'm not sure it gets any better than Newport.
I've been going to the Newport Folk Fest off and on for 20 years.
This is hands-down the BEST lineup ever!! Wilco at the fort on a Friday night before the fun starts on Sat & Sunday. Wow, this one is really gonna be special.
Will need a vacation when it is over.

Do you know when the schedule typically comes out? So many acts I want to see, I'm dreading the inevitable overlap.
Has anyone heard anything about M. Ward possibly stopping by for a collaboration of some sorts? Maybe a Monsters of Folk reunion?

"He said M Ward couldn't officially be at the fest but he's about 99% sure he is flying in and coming to sit in...and that means a possible MOF reunion during Conors set. He said M had a blast last year and loved the fest and def wants to be back but there were a few stipulations about acts who played last year playing again...at least the bigger ones."
That came from another thread. Looking good!!

Yeah, the conflicts are going to be painful. You are only going to be able to see 1/3 of the show and I want to see most of them.

the quote below is from me and I heard that directly from the the guy who puts Folk Fest together...the producer of the fest. I think there is a good chance considering how much M Ward loved the fest last year (he was there even the day he didn't play). Just depends on his schedule I guess.
BTW the Wilco show is with Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun also....insane.

Well, he returns from Europe at the end of June and has no shows scheduled in July, so...
got my tix for the Wilco show Friday night in Newport. What a weekend this will be.
Can't believe I will get to see Wilco & MMJ on back to back nights TWICE this summer.
Life is good.

I've been listening to Blind Pilot these days, and they sound great. Looking forward to finding out who is going to be playing when.
