"And time to give this a go again. It's always awesome when vxga can jump in to crunch the numbers too. :dankk2: ;D
Simply put, you can assign each album any numerical value (higher being better) so long as the total of points given to all 6 full length studio albums total up to 30. You can use half points. I know last time we did this, the rankings skewed towards earlier stuff. I hope those that are fans of the recent stuff speak up! (so I can tell you how wrong you are)"
So, now that people are starting to get ROLSOG in their hands, lets do it again.

I don't mean to be an asshole(!), but if you're going to include solo efforts in this tally, what about All Birds Say? How about Tribute To? I love Regions of Light and Sound of God, but it's not an MMJ record.

Its only a handful of people so far that have given scores, but Im honestly surprised everyone has ROLASOG over EU and Circuital (except 1 person with EU). Now I dont love either of those albums, theyre easily my least favorite MMJ's albums, but Im just not really feeling JJ's record (and Ive had it for like a month or so). I like State of the Art, Actress, and New Life, the rest I find pretty forgettable or dont even like.
Surprised by all the love so far here and in the album thread, although based on facebook I know many are in my boat as well.
I think Evil Urges outshines Regions. There is more meat to the songs on EU. Not to mention Smokin', Touch Pt 1, Touch Pt. 2, Thank You Too!, I'm Amazed, and Evil Urges are amazing tracks.
Maybe I am biased because EU got me started on the band, but damn it is a great album and I think Smokin' is one of their best songs. Some people overlook it, but that is because they play it at almost every show, so it doesn't seem as special as a rarer tune.
The lyrics on Smokin':
Who then was your savior?
Who then was your friend?
Who is now committed to the present?
Is it someone that exists?
What is life in God?
A perfect vision of the self?
I always thought we was a-dealing with one thing
Now we are dealing with something else, oh
.............
Who makes my decisions?
Who reads all your thoughts?
What makes us how we are?
Faith can't prove what science won't resolve
Kumbaya my Lord
C'mon, row your boat ashore
The river's long, it is cold
It chills the body but not the soul, oh
God damn!

I really think Circuital is getting a bit screwed here. I still come back to it a ton more than I do Evil Urges, and I still really enjoy that record as well.
I think, for me anyway, circuital has the biggest gap between how it sounds on record vs how it sounds live. I rarely spin that particular album, but do truly enjoy everything from it in a live setting.

Maybe it's because I was one of the lucky few who has seen the album live already, or maybe its themes just resonate with me at this point in my life, but I am truly obsessed with it. Far more obsessed than I was with Circuital or EU. I considered putting it above Z, too. I can't even say why, but I've been listening to it 2 or 3 times a day since that show on Friday, and before that I was listening to it quite often, too.

That's an easy explanation. If we were going to compare live versions of both TTF wins, but we are comparing the album versions. TTF is not fully realized on the album, it is the live shows that bring it life. Listen to War Begun (studio) and then War Begun at PC, huge difference. The Dark is another great example. When it is played live it captures so much more raw energy when compared to the studio. Evil Urges (studio) already has the meat on its bones that the TFF (studio) is lacking. That is why I voted the way I did.

gonna have to go with TE on this one. I would argue that the style of recording used for EU left it feeling hollow.

But you've never tried a Zebra, I'm sure. Who knows, it might be tasty!
TTF's songs live are some of the best for sure. I just feel like the studio album is a little less realized and a little less full.
Also, I'm apparently one of the only board members who likes Sec Walkin' and Look at You. The only songs I find really weak on the album are Two Halves and Highly Suspicious. However, the latter is meant to be kind of silly and different, so it does accomplish what it set out for.

Another article said it tastes like beef. I like beef.
I assume most people don't eat it because it is exotic, expensive, and a horse-like mammal. People tend to avoid horse meat, probably since they have road them their whole lives. It would be like eating a dog (man's best friend).

are saying Evil Urges is a better album that TTF, so maybe you do believe this. Great! Tell you what, you keeping serving up those zebra burgers to your friend and relatives, getting all crazy on Librarian, while we're over here having a crawfish boil listening to TTF.

I still think you all are thinking of TTF (The Tennessee Fire) in terms of live performances and not studio.
EU (Evil Urges) definitely has its duds, but it has some of MMJ's (My Morning Jacket's) best tracks too. Perhaps it doesn't sit well with some of the folks on here because of the 50/50 (half amazing half meh) feel of the album. Regardless, it was what got me hooked in the first place.

I discovered MMJ 36 days before the release of Evil Urges. However, during those 36 days, I listened extensively to the back catalog and tons of tapings. As a fan of Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead, I found the early recordings of MMJ reminded me of early Floyd and Dead tracks. The Dark sounds like something Syd Barrett would write. I also hear The Doors in early MMJ. So I think we bring our previous tastes to the way we regard MMJ, old and new.
No one is wrong. You like what you like. I'm glad I had those 36 days to discover the early greatness of Jim and MMJ, yet find plenty in albums like EU and Circuital to enjoy.

Good point johnnYYac, my previous band tastes do melt over into MMJ.
I love Pink Floyd (post Barrett more so) and I feel a Dark Side vibe at the beginning of Smokin' and into Touch Pt. 2. Strangulation is another great example. It is super dark and powerful, which is what I love about Floyd's music.
Now if MMJ covered Dogs I'd be all like :cheesy:. I could settle for an Us and Them cover though...

I've been watching it too. It's been a loooooonnnnnng while since I'd seen that.
Everything Changes - I think lots of us like Look at You, but very few of us like two halves or sec walkin'. Highly Suspicious is and will always remain hilariously badass - particularly live. I like EU, but I recognize the genius that is TTF. Jim was what? 20 years old when he recorded this? That's pretty fucking amazing for a guy that age to be that on top of his song writing abilities. His gift is strong. Keep in mind that I'm one of very few who like Remnants (I distinctly remember my friend mahg33ta giving me shit for it at a meal during Forecastle  What an asshole, that mahg33ta!) Also, I want to rank these, but I can't do math well enough to do it.
Ewind. I've been listening to Jim's new album several times a day since Friday night too. I have an entirely new respect for it. After hearing it live, I understand it better. What is it about Jim live that just makes it all gel? I wish I knew.

I like EU better than most do. I like 2 halves, sec walking, and remnants. The librarian is weak though. I got into the band right around EU era, too, but TFF is just better. I'm definitely not thinking of anything live cause until the SCS shows, I hadn't seen most of those songs live.

I'll throw in my .02. It's fun to experiment. Some of my favorites. Okay I'll start with my favorite. Sausage! IMO, sausage is as good as the crawfish or the shrimp. Other favorites, whole mushrooms, quartered onions, whole bulbs of garlic (just slice the top and bottom), artichokes, gotta add lemons. Really it's hard to go wrong.
make sure you read up on cooking times and proper crawfish handling (purging them) and whatnot.
here's a place that'll ship em out. Our big seafood market here only ships them cooked.

Edit- i just looked at the topic of this thread. WTF???
I also don't understand the Evil Urges hate. The only two songs I skip on there are Two Halves and Aluminum Park. The rest of the cd is pretty awesome. I didn't start listening to the band until about nine months prior to the Circuital release.
I also agree that Tennessee Fire comes out much much better live than on the album. I attribute that to the low album quality and the early start of the band not yet finding their "rhythm." If that album were to be re-recorded with current day album quality, it would really blow folks away. Ex: listen to 'They Ran' on Tennessee Fire and 'They Ran' on the Live at the Palms album.
