Title: Lockn' Festival - Sept 4-7, Oak Ridge Farms, VA
Post by: Santo on Mar 04, 2014, 09:48 PM
I am getting really excited about this fest. Only a few bands are announced, but they are literally adding more every day. As of now, these are confirmed:

Bob Weir & Rat Dog
Gary Clark Jr.
Phil Lesh & Friends
Widespread Panic (x2, Steve Winwood sitting in one night)
The Allman Brothers Band
The String Cheese Incident (x2)
Willie Nelson

Rumors on the Phish board predict Wilco and Grace Potter will be added this week. The same rumor correctly predicted Gary Clark Jr and Steve Winwood. Here is the quote from posternutbag16:

"I have a friend who just met Dave Frey.. said they will be announcing Gary Clark Jr., Steve Winwood, Wilco, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals this week. In talks with UM, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Neil Young/Crazy Horse."

I know its a pipe dream, but early September is close to fall. Maybe they will add a MMJ , or god help us My Morning Incident.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals added today.  The rumor is now 3 for 3. If it continues to go to form, Wilco will be added tomorrow or Friday.

I bought tickets last year and had to bail cause all my friends bailed. If they announce Wilco, I'll have to try and rally again.

Lockn's' Facebook says no more announcements until next week. Hope the Wilco rumor still comes true.

Damn, if Wilco and any combo of Neil or Petty were added, I may not be able to resist! Petty supposedly has a new album coming out but he's been pretty quiet so I'd be surprised if he were added. Neil, however, will be doing dates all summer and I know they have an offer out to him and the Horse. Here's hoping they accept after what happened last year!

Dave Frey in his official Lockn' Facebook chat mentioned they gave Neil Young an "aggressive offer," so I am real hopeful. I would bet we won't hear about it for while with these one at a time announcements. If you are obsessive like me, last week the announcement popped up a t noon eastern. I have been checking everyday.

The Allman Brothers, Bob Weir and the rumor of Neil Young was all the convincing we needd to buy tickets early. Plus there is this guy...

Hoping to make it up after I couldnt last year. Definitely hoping they get Neil & CH since they cancelled last year. Never seen Petty either so that would be nice.

Right now biggest draw for me is Gary Clark Jr but I like most of what's been announced so far.

Does anybody know anything about the bands that are competing in Rockn to Lockn? So far they include: People's Blues of Richmond, Everwilde, The Green Boys, and Bryan Elijah Smith. Listening to some the of the music and watching some of the videos I wouldn't mind seeing PBR or The Green Boys.

This made my day! Although, they are not getting a very warm reception on the Lockn' Facebook page.

Apparently, Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band announced his solo tour recently. Part of the announcement were two days at Lockn' with Grateful Grass, which will include Keller Williams and Reed Mathis.

Damn, this lineup is really rounding into form!

With the Wilco add, I'm starting to think maybe Petty ain't comin'. BUTTTTT, OSL is announcing their lineup today -- one that Petty is all-but-guaranteed to headline -- and I'm hoping that once that's confirmed, the Petty summer tour floodgates will open and the dates will flow like mad.

I saw that too. Anytime someone feels the need to comment by saying "meh", it really annoys the shit out of me. They have no value to add but are compelled to share their lack of excitement. It really grinds my gears.

Lockn' rounded out the week by adding Hot Tuna, Umphrey's McGee, Grateful Grass (Keller Williams, Jeff Austin, and Keith Moseley), and Grateful Gospel (another Keller Williams stint).

I'm loving this lineup. I have wanted to see Umphrey's for a while and now I will see them 3 times this summer. Twice over the 4th weekend and at Lockn.

Getting back to what Parker and Angelo were saying. I am flabbergasted by all the hate on the Facebook page. Only Hot Tuna and Keller Williams avoided the trolling. Even Umphrey's got hit hard. I thought they would have appeased some the traditional jamband crowd. You would think that people would want a diverse lineup instead of the standard festy fare.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised though, it is the internet.

Some interesting additions over the weekend too. There were a couple of bluegrass acts (Cabinet and Larry Keel w/Sam Bush), a Zeppelin cover band (Bustle in Your Hedgerow), Tedeschi Trucks, and they announced Phil Lesh's Friends (Warren Haynes, Joe Russo, John Scofield, and John Medeski).

Joe Russo is the drummer for Bustle in Your Hedgerow, so he'll be one of the busy guys at Lockn'. I have not heard them before this announcement, but it looks like they put on a great show. September can't get here soon enough.

Bustle In Your Hedgerow is amazing! One of the sneaky-awesome acts on the lower-half of this bill. Last year they played at Bonnaroo until the early hours of the morning, and even brought out Brittany from Alabama Shakes to sing a couple tunes. Really looking forward to that set.

This is pretty much me, too. Any guesses as to who's going to play when, and when the fest will reveal this? Also, does anyone know what accommodations are like in the area (apart from camping?) Thanks.

Here is the day-by-day breakdown:

I am encountering some difficulty getting the Thursday and Friday off work, so I may book it Friday after my shift and make it down for Saturday and Sunday, which for my tastes, are the best two days of the weekend! I'm just debating whether or not to get a full Tier 1 pass right now, and eat a bit of the cost, or just hope that single-day tickets go on sale eventually. I hate how they never give details in regards to single-day sales!

Hey, thanks very much for posting the schedule.

I'm sort of in the same boat, I'm focussing on Sat and Sun as it would take me an entire day just to get to VA and I can't be away for too long. I don't really want to miss DBT on Fri, though. I just saw them last week and they're on fire!

To anyone going, don't miss Cabinet if you can help it. They are from my hometown and I've been seeing them for years tear up the little Jazz Cafe just a mile from my house. They are getting better and better and they're really making a name for themselves. I'm not surprised to see them on a bill like this, I just thought they were a couple of years away. It's not fair to call them just bluegrass, and it's not fair to call them "jamgrass." Cabinet really is on some other shit and their shows are guaranteed to have a few face-melting moments. I'm curious to hear how their sound translates to this type of venue. Regardless there should be a lot more Cabinet fans after Lockn.

There's only three bands I've seen at least 10 times each, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, and Cabinet. Don't miss them!

Holy Shit, they just added Furthur. They were scheduled for a hiatus after "Furthur Paradise Awaits." Its their only other 2014 show.

I'm thinking that they are going to add a few acts to Thursday. Only three confirmed headliners, so maybe one more? Neil Young?

FWIW, someone on the Wilco FB page said that last year the Fest started selling single-day passes in August. I have to book a flight and hotel so I think I'll just cave and buy the 4-day pass and be done with it!

We did a lot of hand-wringing over the camping locations. The forest camping looks pretty cozy but there is more space in the car camping. We ended up getting the preferred camping, because my mother-in-law is coming too and we wanted to cut down on the walking.

By the way, it looks like June 1 is the last day to get $250 tickets. Ticket prices will increase to $285 on June 2.

That wasn't my main draw by any means though, and I'm still really excited! It's only like 10 days away now! I haven't been to a camping festival since MMJ played Wakarusa in 2011. CANT WAIT.

Definitely disappointing. We broke down during the move and needed multiple repairs. That pretty much wiped out all of our plans. Hopefully, the move enables more trips next year. The Bob Weir cancellations definitely sucks, but it helped us out. We were able to get refunds. On the other hand, the Bill Kreutzmann and Lettuce additions would have been nice to see.

That is what we are doing as well!  I believe the acoustic stage is located there.

looks like there is a ton of car parking so depends on where you end up, you could be near acoustic stage or you could be near Shakedown stage.  Bought my pop up tent for $50 today.  Going to spend this weekend getting the rest of my stuff ready.

I bought a pop up canopy yesterday too. It was cheaper than buying forrest camping.

I don't have a day off between now and thursday... I can't wait for 5 days off and this festival

back at work this AM.  what a weekend.  Quick thoughts:  Keller's Grateful Grass/Gospel sets were amazing, late night sets ruled most particularly Bustle In Your Hedgerow (holy shit!), WSP with Winwood totally owned Saturday night (sorry Petty), Tauk blew me away, Wilco's sets were fantastic, Gary Clark!!!!!.

Music was great all weekend, but Lockn had to have been the worst festival atmosphere I've ever seen. We got a hotel Saturday night and left Sunday after wilco because it was so hot and I was so tired of seeing a bunch of people on ketamine and acid stumbling around. The whole festival setup seeming very half-assed, too. I'm attributing it to the fact that it's still a young festival. In the end it was a much better weekend than a weekend at home, but I don't see myself going back. I think I learned that a weekend of non-stop jam bands just isn't for me.

More positively- Wilcos sets and WSP with Winwood were my highlights.

How was the crowd for Wilco? I'm curious what all of the jamband fans thought.

fairly indifferent IMO. There was definitely some folks into it but most were just holding down spots til the next jamband.  But I didn't really get too close during their sets so they could have been going off up front.

Indifference does not surprise me at all.

i missed those.  I've heard and watched enough UM to know they aren't my cup of tea.  Yea, Bustle was something else.  The crowd was massive for a 2am show

I really dig UM, but I understand why some don't. I've been wanting to see Lettuce for a while and now have two near misses. We were supposed to see them at the Gorge last year, but the festival was cancelled and alas we had to bail this year.

Lockn was one of the most incredible weekends of my life.  Unbeatable lineup.  Did not see a bad show all weekend.  I have no complaints whatsoever about this fest and will definitely be going again next year!

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot all about this video. I was mainly asking as I wanted to see what others thought. I'm curious how their sound translated in such a large venue. I've always seen them in little 200 capacity clubs.
