woooooooo
Over 7 minute "Only Memories Remain" :cheesy:....HECK YEAAAAA
I might be delirious with all the new MMJ music coming out but I really think "Only Memories Remain" might be the best song they have released in a long time. Plus we get Jim's demo on the album too!

When you look at the pre-orders on their official webstore, on the deluxe CD version there is an 11th track called "Silence"... Does anyone know if this is an actual song, or something more like "Good Intentions" on Evil Urges?

I was just about to post about that too, not sure if that is a track only available if purchased off of MMJ website under the deluxe cd, either way I'm curious why that wouldn't be included on iTunes deluxe cd also?

That die-cut box cover looks awesome. And a puzzle, too! :cheesy:
I'm guessing the 4 tracks at the bottom are bonus tracks?
Weird when i went to wikipedia's webpage and clicked on the Waterfall page it took me to a Turkish film from 2001 of the same name
the tracklisting seems to indicate a theme or dare I say, concept.

The Waterfall was recorded with Tucker Martine (who also worked on Circuital). In a press release, frontman Jim James talked about the album's themes:
"What fused this record is, I feel like it's a weird turning point for the universe. I feel like so many people I know are getting divorced or having kids. There's so much change going on and I feel like, for me, that one chapter has ended. And if you're looking at a book, there's a hand flipping the page up and it's in between the chapter you just finished and the one that's getting ready to start. That's kind of the sound of this record, and my life, the sound of the page turning and not being sure what's coming next."

thanks ditty. This record comes about a week before my son will be born so I expect this album will be very special for me.
Okay so I opted for the Limited Deluxe and the Deluxe cd. I don't need another t shirt and the wall hanging looks real cool but I figured I would get the cd instead for around the same money as the Deluxe Bundle, hopefully for that bonus track! :cheesy:

Not only is Only Memories over 7 min, but we have a 6 min song and 4 other songs that are either at, over, or within a few seconds of being 5 minutes long.
Good stuff.

As someone posted elsewhere, I imagine "silence" is literally just silence. It's purpose is to separate the true album tracks from the deluxe bonus songs.

Here's a first look at a track outside the three we already know of via a new rolling stone article
The Waterfall finds the band veering from country-tinged folk ("Get the Point") to spacey soul-pop ("Compound Fracture") to heavy, majestic rock ("Big Decisions").

I'd go with 5/4, which the band announced this morning.
I was hoping for some longer track times like the olds days, but I'm super excited to see a sort of theme emerging.
Hoping for some tracks with strings on this album! Leaves the door open for more live shows backed with groups like Boston Pops, Louisville Youth Orchestra, Andrew Bird, etc.

Yeah it's an older one for sure. I heard it on a bootleg (or something) a long, long time ago. Anyways, it's pretty special from what I remember -classic Jacket in the vein of Oxen. I'm pretty excited that they actually recorded it and also a bit curious to see how if it has changed over the years. If not, I'm totally okay with that too.
So I guess I have to buy the deluxe Itunes version AND a vinyl. Closest vinyl package that includes those songs is like $90. That's a bit too pricey for me.

I don't know that I would call "Big Decisions" "heavy, majestic rock". I hope that doesn't mean it's the heaviest and majestic-est song on the album. And the description of "Get The Point" has me thinking "Sec Walkin". Think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts. :undecided:
Hello can not wait for the new album big decisions is growing on me. Does anybody have a download of I Can't Wait? I have never heard it.
thanks
yeah I Cant Wait sounds sick , id love to hear that
I Cant Wait is a great song. I was hoping it would make it on It Still Moves...but Im glad to see it finally getting released..the best version Ive heard is on the wfpk live lunch from 12/20/2002. I recorded it on a minidisc back then..Ill have to try to find it. There are some great versions of Come Closer, I Will Sing You Songs and Steam Engine on that show too. Maybe the first public performances (of Steam Engine and I Will Sing)....I cant remember for sure. I know there are recordings out there.

Heres a link to the tabs and some lyrics..I think I remember an interview where Jim talked about the song being inspired by an old song called 8 miles to Louisville..I think Grandpa Jones from Hee Haw did it on one of his albums. I cant find the interview anymore..it may have been from an old interview in Scandinavia when they were so big there in the late 90s/early 2000s.

"I Cant Wait" is absolutely beautiful. Im so very glad that they decided to release that. I wonder if it will be a recent studio version, and old studio version, or an old live version.
I love seeing these guys live and i love the energy they bring in a full band show, but for me nothing in the world compares to what Jim can do all by his lonesome with an accoustic guitar. Ive always wondered why he doesnt do more of that. I thought for sure when he announced his solo album that most of it would be accoustic. Anyone have any insight as to why he never went that route?

I think there are a few reasons...the first being the kind of creative limitations that doing a specifically acoustic album would entail. Based on what I have read about his process, he's not deliberately like, "i'm gonna make an album of slow songs". I think that songs come to him as either instrumental increments, or some lyrics, and he kind of lets the songs decide where they want to go, solo or Jacket. I think as things begin to build, themes and tonalities begin to work together, even if seemingly incongruous, in order to create the narrative of the album...and I think that is what we
love about artists...is that fucking rare ability to trust their instincts with regard to the direction that their creative output will take in a given format. I'm pretty sure Moving Away and one other song were supposed to be on the solo record, but wound up on Circuital. We may never know why, but that's where the spirits wanted it to go. And I think that reverence for the muse is something he honors.
But I think beyond approach, the themes in ROLASOG...man vs. himself, man vs. technology, etc. (emphasis on the vs.) seem to require a kind of jolt of electricity...the songs require that mysterious feedback...because they conjure up the images of your own hazy landscape...the magnetic Manichaeism that is the television fuzz inside your brain...each song possessing the power surge can't-tell static shock of either panic attack or just ate the best acid of your life or maybe both, but you know you just want to crawl into a giant bed and cover your head...and then there comes mid-album acoustic refuge "Exploding"...like Venetian gondolier sweeping you through dream canals faster than valium...and you are so thankful for the slow, sweet refuge, but then too you know that the fuzz is just refuge inside another dream anyway...
In my sleepy opinion, I think the acoustic guitar is like any vital organ...an extremely necessary component...but one that cannot thrive entirely on its own...
Steven Hyden, who is a really great music writer, said the following in a blurb about Big Decisions:
My Morning Jacket is the defining band of modern Southern rock. The group's early-'00s run from 2001's At Dawn to 2005's Z set a template for dreamy psychedelia cut with experimental pop and (yes) old-school Southern-rock riffage emulated by countless other groups. In the past 10 years, MMJ wavered a bit as the band tried to remake its sound with mixed success. Stabs at funk and soul mostly fell flat on 2008's Evil Urges, and attempts to return to a bigger rock sound seemed like a reluctant capitulation to longtime fans. I haven't sorted out my feelings quite yet on MMJ's forthcoming LP, The Waterfall, though it is similar to 2011's Circuital in how it tries to reconcile the band's festival-rockin' past with frontman Jim James's need to push in more ethereal directions
https://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/songs-of-the-week-southern-rock-for-the-finally-thawing-spring/ (https://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/songs-of-the-week-southern-rock-for-the-finally-thawing-spring/)
I guess he's heard it, but not sure what I make of his notes on the album.
interesting article, parkervb. I dont know what to think with all this negative hype for the waterfall...I'm just gonna take the album as is. People still describe Evil Urges as bad but they have transformed those songs into some awesome fucking experiences live so I have faith in the Jacket and what they do, ya know?
Well based on his intro statement, I think he wants them to make another At Dawn/ISM. He seems to only be interested in the "Southern Rock" sound. Well, I mean I think Jim and the boys are passed that and want to keep experimenting. I didn't take that he listened to the whole album (maybe he did) and is judging it off Big Decisions.
At Dawn/ISM are my favorites, but I don't expect or want that record to be made again. I support that they want to keep experimenting and changing. No matter what it will always have the "Jacket" sound to it.
I feel this album will be Evil Urges + ROLSOG mixed.. so a bit of spacey soul music mixed with some 80's synth rock thrown in the mix based on what we have heard.
I can't wait to listen to it three times before I form my opinion.

Is there a lot of negativity from people that have heard it? Or just negative expectations? I haven't heard anything.
sorry, you are correct, negative expectations. maybe just cause i skim all the comments on youtube and facebook and see what people say.
Regardless, I'm very excited for this summer tour and can't wait to hear the album. I've had Only Memories stuck in my head for the past couple of days

There's already one song that is better than anything on Circuital that we know of! Although, I really like Wonderful.

I agree, I was actually listening to Only Memories while reading that article and felt that song alone will be worth the price of admission. I could see it being up there with War Begun/Phone in terms of live performances.
I think overall the sound will be different, cleaner production and no reverb. You're going to win and lose fans with every new album (especially when you dare to do different). I for one am excited and go in with only one expectation, that I will give it it's fare shot.

Definitely.
However, I think there is a greater chance for Only Memories to be the best song on the album than any other song. I just have a feeling that it is the "Dondante" of the album. However, this doesn't mean there won't be some awesome rock songs like TWTHS or Anytime etc. However, I could be wrong. Smokin' from Shootin' has turned out to be one of my top 5 favorite MMJ songs, and at first listen I would have said Touch Me Pt. 2 was the best song on EU.
I always thought Touch Me Pt 1 was an underrated song off of Evil Urges (killer bass and drum combo). I didn't mind EU- it did pull in a lot of directions but sometimes there is something magical/liberating in being torn apart . Excited to see the boys live in a few months!! Calm before the storm..

i, too, like to get 3 listens in before forming a strong opinion on albums and i also very much agree that the band is way past any Southern rock classification they may have been given. I think for the purpose of his theme in that post, he lumped them in with some bands from the South.

Kind of reminds me of the Jim James GQ interview from a few years back. I think it helps to make a MMJ release exciting...
GQ:You started as an alt-country band—your sound has broadened so much over the years, I think it would be hard to call you that now.
Jim James: A lot of people say we shoot ourselves in the foot with variety, but if I'm not being moved by alt-country, why would I keep making those types of records? It seems like bands are taught that making the same record over and over again is the vehicle to success, but I've always loved getting a record by one of my favorite bands and having it be something completely different. You still hear the heart and soul of the band—artists like Bjork, Erykah Badu, and Radiohead—but when you get their new record, you have no idea what it's going to sound like.

Looks like Hyden has definitely heard the album. If he has, I'm guessing some other critics have too! Should be a good writeup on Grantland in a few weeks, I'd think.

Circuital leaked on May 3rd and was scheduled to be released on May 31. I'd say there's a very good chance this follows a similar pattern.
edit: I'm thinking we might get a chance to listen within a couple weeks.

The comments on Steve's Twitter post are interesting too-- seems like several of the ppl commenting mention a variety of
different songs that they are digging, should be in for a well rounded album! Also worth mentioning "Compound Fracture" was raved about and no mention of "Only Memories Remain". Getting more and more excited :cheesy:
You know what? I am so goddamn grateful to this band, and am just genuinely thrilled to be a part of this little webbed universe. Every single day there is something new to appreciate...some little token to behold...some little joy to revel in. I don't know where this record will take me, or any of us...but it is just a fucking thrill to know that it will be special and filled with love and kindness and good folks/jokes and damn jams. Feel like I got the keys to the kingdom, gang.

I'm not too hip with uploading pictures on here but in that same conversation (a continuation of it anyways) that Ryan Leas guy says "That one really grew on me after a few listens, should also be kill live. It was just used in an episode of the Blacklist, oddly"- My impression was that he is referring to the new song "Spring (Among the living)" Does anyone watch that show and hear anything or did i misinterpret the Twitter convo?!

Wow. I wonder if he meant simply better than eu, z and circuital or that it resembles ism in some way or both. Given the one critics remarks about them finally being able merge sounds of the past with those of modern times it could be all of the above, and then some. I gotta stop reading this thread though i dont want any spoilers til i get that puppy alone and on vinyl with the house to myself.

It's almost 1:30 of the song that you can hear between the wordless scene with the police raid and then under characters talking. Has that kind of building pulse like State of the Art and Victory Dance, but is more upbeat than either. And it sounds like there's a "one two three four" then instrumental jam right in the middle of the track.
Hot stuff!

The five songs here all sound great, I hate to say it but my expectations are growing!
I thought for sure that first song of the trailer would be the first on the album but turns out..no. Kind of cool though it seems like they loaded all of the real heavy hitters at the back end of the album.
Crazy to think that they have aanother full album in the wings.

I do enjoy the Miami Jungle version as well however I can see why they stuck with the version that's on the album. It seems to mesh more with the rest of the songs and it also sounds much more polished (although, maybe they reached a stopping point with all of the Compound versions and then put extra work into the one they picked for the album). That sinister guitar in the background though on Miami Jungle.... if they dubbed that over onto the album version it would be perfect.
I'm not sure how I feel about what they did with "I Can't Wait." That was a song that didn't really need a lot of work but again I understand why they did what they did. Jim even changed some of the lyrics, seeming to fit with a theme that is emerging with his work.. moving towards a more upbeat, positive feeling.
"..
knowing that there's no way to get back if I should stray" seems to have been changed to "..
hoping that there's a way, etc..."
Not that I know him personally but from my perspective it seems that he has been willing himself into being an optimist for quite some time now and i'm cool with that, but I will always prefer that old acoustic version even if it does sound sad.
Ok, Im just gonna say the suspense is killing me! Only 8 days til the album is released. Im hoping my order will be delivered on release day. Part of me wants to find the leak, but I think I will just wait til its in my hands.

the "grower" phenomenon...i can't recall a record where this term has been uttered as universally as this one. I feel like a lot of it has to do with our own unique expectations for the album and when this album matches none of them, it takes a few listens to readjust and appreciate what this band and Tucker have done.
I agree, I think the first time through the album we are more likely to listen for what we are hoping to hear from them more so than what is actually there and we miss things. We miss the vibe initially.

This is exactly what happened to me on the new Sufjan album. It took me a couple of times through to get over the fact that it wasn't "Illinois" and didn't have the huge arrangements that I love from the album. Now I am obsessing over it. I hope the same happens with The Waterfall. I have just heard Big D and Spring a couple of times, holding out for the rest.

It was Bo, himself, in an early interview that suggested The Waterfall would require multiple listens before final judgement. He's right on.
Listening for the 2nd time. Im definitely liking it more than the first listen.
Listened to it a lot last week when it leaked on Youtube for a few days. Guess i am kind of alone on this one, but even though I feel its better than the last one, still a very mixed bag for me. In its infancy was really the only  that stood out as a wow song. Solid to above average tracks were:
Spring really complete multi-tiered track, just not a ton there lyrically
Believe catchy, but missing a massive signature riff
Fracture which seems to be missing something for my tastes pretty good riff though.
The only one that's really grown on me is Believe, which is catchy and sticks in your head or at least does for me. The rest are just kind of meh, take em or leave them with a few of the songs falling well below par, Like a river and get the point. Maybe some will change once they are played live, but we'll have to see on that or not.
I have listened to it a lot over the past few weeks...taking a break from it until I can get my hands on the vinyl. I think there are some monsters on this album.....In It's Infancy, Compound Fx, Tropics, Only Memories...Believe is growing on me more and more along with Thin Line. When I hear Thin Line I think Elton John...I could be alone on that notion. The only tune that I'm not really digging is Get The Point. I just don't think it flows well with the album. But what the hell do I know? Anyway...another great album by my favorite band. :cheesy:
reviews looking very positive so far
I haven't spun this in 3 weeks now. Itching to get my copy in the mail next week. Promised to hold off until official release date now

I think it will make more sense in the vinyl context. It's the break up song to close side A. Then you have Spring kicking off side B. the rebirth
Who here likes Hillside Song? Its becoming one of my favorites of the Bonus Tracks. It sorta reminds me of Bermuda Highway. Not sure why.

I have to agree. This song is great. I was thinking that I can see this song replacing Bermuda Highway at certain shows, when Jim plays by himself to give the band a break.
Also... The studio version of "I can't wait" is awesome!!!!!
I really can't wait to hear "Tropics" live

I love Hilliside Song and also draw comparison to Bermuda Highway for unknown reasons. I literally had that thought pop into my head while listening to the song just today.
The whole album is wonderful, wonderful. wonderful the way I feel.
Thin Line slays me the most, but there are many things I love about every song, like the keyboards at the end of Compound Fracture.
I could listen to Compound Fracture on repeat all-day.
I'm interested in this keyboard ending to Compound. Mostly due to the OBH performance, which I seem to remember ending with a fairly dominant dueling guitar solo jam. Then again, that was a few months ago and I was fairly drunk. But dammit I remember guitars!

I hear you on this!!! Out of the three songs played at OBH, compound fracture was the MOST different on the beach than on the record. I too remember guitar craziness on the beach but then again, I was pretty drunk too!!!

I remember reading an interview where Jim said they recorded three versions (different tempos) of this song (Two of which will be released). And said that the live version is very different. So I imagine the live is the third version of it. Cause I remember it being different than both available versions.... I too was really drunk, so who knows
Im now in love with Thin Line!
Loving this album (2nd only to the new James McMurtry so far this year). I do sorta wish they have swapped places with "Get the Point" & "Hillside Song" though; I think the latter is a much stronger track.
