2 movies by my 2 fav British directors; My Name Is Joe (Ken Loach) which I'd seen before & High Hopes (Mike Leigh) which I hadn't. Both excellent!

Also saw some of Tekkon Kinkreet on TV. Amazing animation, hope to catch the whole thing next time it's on...

I haven't watched too many new films since the fall TV season started, but I rather liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It's a pretty funny, bawdy romantic comedy (a genre I like - more with classic movies though). Anyway, I think Sarah Marshall is a better film than other Judd Apatow-related comedies like Knocked Up and Superbad (maybe not funnier than the latter, but better all-round). The best of the bunch is still The 40-Year Old Virgin, by a healthy margin.

I watched this last week after my cousin said it was good, and I didnt think it was bad, but I expected it to better. It was better than Stiller's recent tropic getaway romantic comedy 'Heartbreak kid', but I expected more out of it for an Apatow movie (that said, Jason Segel (lead actor in FSM) wrote this movie), but Apatow only produced it.

Havent seen Pineapple Express, but I thought those 3 you mentioned were a decent amount better to much better than FSM

I will agree with you that 40yr Virgin is his best and my favorite too, though. When I say that sometimes, ppl look at me like Im crazy to think its better than Superbad, but its just as LOL funny without trying to be with edgy dialogue.

But as romantic comedies go, I think Sarah Marshall hit most of the right notes without running out of steam. Most romantic comedies aren't rip-roariously funny all the way through either (and I've tons from every era, plus some good foreign films). They are often sweet and bitter-sweet, which this film succeeds in being.

The 40 Year-Old Virgin is the best comedy of the decade. It's an unconventional (read rude and crude) but honest love story. Borat is a close second.

Superbad is unconsistent and over-long. If it weren't for Michael Cera's character, the movie wouldn't work. Knocked Up is alright for a stoner comedy. I have no interest in Pineapple Express since I generally don't like stoner comedies.

Yeah, if your comparing to your typical Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaghey romantic comedy, FSM probably is in the 90th percentile of romantic comedies. Considering it was Apatow related, I think I just had higher expectations.

I must say though, I never thought too much about Mila Kunis, but she looked faaaaaantastic in FSM.

Though not a conventional one, Id actually call Knocked Up a romantic comedy. It comes at it from a different angle, but it is 1 nonetheless. So if you look at it that way instead of a stoner comedy (which I wouldnt call it. yeah, they smoke weed but that doesnt make it a stoner comedy necessarily), I think it was better than FSM

..Now for Best Comedy of the Decade, this could be a good debate. I too would nominate 40Yr Virgin and Borat as possibilities, but Id have to think about this for a bit to make sure I dont forget a movie. Id add to the list:
-Bad Santa
-Old School
-High Fidelity
-Anchorman
-Royal Tenenbaums

And there a probably a few other worthy considerations.

I'd go with 40 YOV over Knocked Up for Aptow movies. Knocked Up is a close runner up. 40 YOV is just so damn funny. As far as best of the decade, man that is a pretty tough call. Short list as follows, and in no particular order.

40 YOV
Borat
Knocked Up
Anchorman
Road Trip
Eurotrip

Notice a trend? Leaning towards Borat as #1 as I have never laughed so hard in a theater as I did when I saw Borat.

I'm generally not a Will Ferrell fan, but I liked Elf. If South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut was released a year later, it may top my list for this decade. However, Team America was really boring.

Anyway, some more of my favourite comedies of the decade (although some are loosely related to the genre):

Shaun of the Dead
Sideways
High Fidelity
Amelie
Finding Nemo  (one of the best films of the decade, period)
Shrek II
About a Boy
Little Miss Sunshine
The Station Agent
The Royal Tennebaums
About Schmidt

Like I said, I knew if would forget about some, and Little Miss Sunshine is def up there

Nice to see the 2nd of High Fidelity (IMO Cusacks best, though GPBlank is close) and Royal Tenenbaums

I liked About Schmidt a lot too. Just shows Nicholson's range to pull that off to perfection (I prefer this Payne movie to Sideways probably, but both are good)

...as for Will Ferrell, as far as lately I agree with you. Semi Pro and Blades of Glory were absolutely terrible. Heard Step Brothers was good, but havent seen it yet. Anchorman was fantastic though, and I like Talladega Nights a lot too.

If you havent seen Stranger Than Fiction, that might make you a bit more of a Ferrell was because that movie was GreaT.

I've been meaning to see Stranger Than Fiction. I do admire Ferrell's physical comedy, even if I don't laugh at it very often.

Oh yeah, I liked Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation quite a bit too.

Speaking of Kaufman, I'm ridiculously excited to see his first film as a director...

That film got mixed to poor reviews at the recent Toronto International Film Festival.

I'm quite okay with that; I'm a huge Kaufman fan.  Yes, even Human Nature.

QuoteThe Station Agent
Nice! I love this movie!!! Don't think I've seen anyone else mention it before...

Pineapple Express was directed by David Gordon Green, a very interesting up & coming director. I've only seen Undertow but have the Criterion Collection of George Washington & Snow Angels on the way from the US right now.

I'll ignore the reviews too, sometimes they're just wrong.

I liked Station Agent, but I dont think it belongs in the 'comedy' category, esp considering some of these other movies

Its a drama, with humor in it.

Didnt know that about that director DB, but I think PE is a long way from those other movies.

I enjoyed Undertow a good bit, and watched the beginning of GW and have it on my netflix (heard good things), but not familiar with the other 1

This could be an interesting debate/idea

Anyone else wanna do a thread with say, 16 comedies from this decade, and vote on a movie vs movie matchup???!??

Im proposing 4 regions (picture NCAA tourney, but starting with the Sweet 16 region)

Ill Loosely propose:
-An Apatow Region (with a possible fill in or 2)
-A Comedy-Drama Region
-A Stiller/Ferrell/Vaughn Region (with a possible fill in or 2)
-An Indie Comedy Region (not necessarily Indie, but not your standard box office 1)

Anyone else wanna do this?

If we can get say, 7 ppl (to make it uneven), Ill start a thread

For those who havent added their opinion on some movies they think are worthy of making the final 16, add some choices

Sure.
You should add Ghost World to the indie comedies.
