Got 10 miles in at a 10 min/mile pace. Not a landspeed record but it works for my short self. Officialy start my marathon training Monday and I'm way ahead of the curve on this one. It's hot and humid as fuck and I'm droppin pounds like mad. Down to aboot 180, even eating as much as I am. By race time I should be 170-175ish. You might actually be able to see an ab or 2 by then.

Race day.  Feel the burn.

I kind of look offended that someone is taking my picture.  That, or I'm about to pass out.

Sweet pic! Is that at the end of the race?

Thanks!  This was a descent right after all of the tough climbing of the course.  This was probably at about mile 6 of 8.

Someone just sent this picture to me from a race in March.

Yay Rowan!  That's a great pic.
if it falls apart or makes us millionaires

QuoteI had two mountain bike races in approximately 102 degree heat index conditions this past weekend and managed 2nd place (of 4) in the time trial on Saturday and 4th place (of 13) in the cross country on Sunday.  To say that it was hot is definitely an understatement.

It was difficult during the races not to think about the fact that I could be drinking ice cold beer in an air conditioned room somewhere, but, in some twisted way, it was still fun.

congrats Flyguy, be careful in this heat  :(

For real.  I learned my lesson after my DNF at my race in May.  I only rode the XC on Sunday at about 85% due to the conditions and still came away with 4th place.  I basically rode as if it were a training ride.  I had a good time and I didn't have to be hauled off the trail and, well,  that's a good thing.

For the last few weeks I've been playing ultimate frisbee on Saturdays and I've spent the rest of the weekend w/a killer headache. I hydrate before and after, but the humidity has really been kicking my a**. I can't take it like I used to.

I used to play ultimate frisbee like it was my job.  It is a lot of fun, but I don't know if I could hang anymore.  I wear a Camelbak when I ride, but I don't think that it would work so well for ultimate, what with 60 ounces of Gatorade/water mix sloshing around on your back.  Do you think that hydration (or lack thereof) is causing the headache?  Have you ever tried any "during activity fuels" like gels, shot blocks, etc?

18 miles down bitches......3 hours when I take out the time for bio breaks and stopping to grab a bottle or 2 of gatorade. Burned about 2,700 calories which is at least 700 more then I normally eat in a day. I could have stretched it out to 20 miles but my feet hurt a little bit but that's my fault as I'm trying to delay buying another new pair of shoes. Race is 10/3 so I'll get another pair in the next few weeks so they get broken in before the big day.

Soulshine

10K Sunday. Next step.....1/2 marathon. pffffhhhhht
Because we're all in this together...

Nice work MJK and Soulshine!  Wished I liked running AT ALL.  I'll only run if I'm playing a sport.  I simply cannot imagine running a marathon.  I've never ran for more than a mile in my life.  Anyway...Starting to play basketball again and need to get a bike soon.  I used to have a 42" vertical leap and was able to dunk, with 2 hands, when I was a sophomore in college...I'm 5'11"...wow that was 8 years and 30 lbs ago!  Was thinking I might like to be able to dunk again, so that's a tentative goal for now.  Can still grab the rim with 2 hands pretty easily but need to add probably 9-10" to my leap.
We could.

It's good (or bad) that I consider 13.1 a short fun run anymore.

Better hit da bricks chica. 20 in 2 weeks and again on 9/11 then taper down for me.

OK, 20 miles tomorrow morning. Who's with me?!

10/3 is coming quick. I will be sure to post my chip number if this race allows people to track online (some do some don't). You can see me suffer on a map vs. seeing it in person. It's more enjoyable that way.

That would be cool.  Let us know so that we can drink beer and eat bacon as we witness your progress.

Good luck, MJK. I'll be doing 12-15 probly.
Keep me posted tomorrow, temps dropped here so it should be nice.

I'm sure that mjk and I have very similar climates; the weather here in the past few days has been great particularly in the AM.  I believe that it was 58 degrees when I stepped out this morning.  It makes me want to ride/run/kayak/camp...

It has been amazing every morning the last few days. Low 60's. So nice that I dropped my time. Today, I shaved 10 minutes off my time. Normally takes 40 minutes to run 4 miles and I blazed through it in 35 minutes with a 5 minute bio break so 30 minutes of run time.

OK so I did my 20 miles on Saturday and held my normal 10 minute miles. Pleased with it as it was an adventure (sorry for those that saw this on FB). Chased by a dog, almost hit by a car that ran a red light which started a shouting match, it got warm, and my new shoes were fucking with me. The insole came lose so it kept sliding out towards the heel and rubbing a raw spot on my instep. I had to stop every few miles and readjust it. By the time I was done, the damn thing was half way out my shoe. Frustrating. Still surprised I made good time with all of those obsticles. "Light" week this week as I only have to do 35 miles vs the 45 or 50 I do on the long weeks.

I got in 32 solo miles on the mountain bike yesterday and the last 5 or 6 really tested me.  My legs were pretty close to done.  I think that I need to bring more food next time.  The 6" turkey sub and 2 GU gel packs just didn't cut it.  Burning 2400 calories and only taking in a few hundred tend to make one weak.  It was a great training ride though...

Time: 03:33:52
Distance: 32.03 mi
Elevation Gain: 3,122 ft
Calories: 2,388 C

This was pretty good for me as I only took two breaks to eat.  One 10 minute and one 15 minute.  I am trying to add miles and time for a solo 6 hour race in November.

Oh yeah, and I "almost" hit a deer coming around a corner at about 18 mph.  I don't know which one of us was more startled...
