Dude...
It IS the real deal. I think the Netherlands and Belgium have a similar thing going between them as have America and Canada, but I can say that the Belgians make the BEST beer out there. With a 'Bierlokaal'(=Beerpub) on the other side of the street...I've tasted a lot of Belgian beers.

Those American beers. Don't know much about them, except Budweiser tastes like piss(imho, offcourse)...any recommendations?
I'm not trying to be mysterious about it, it's just that what I do is tough to explain.

My wife picked up a case of BBC Sheltowee Hop-A-Lot IPA for me in Louisville on Saturday.  It is exclusively brewed for Liquor Barn.  If you live in or near Louisville I would recommend picking some up.

DiscoStu65

went to a small brewery here in town that I hadn't been to before.

enjoyed several ipa's and porters

There's a lot of great American brews unfortunately you probably won't be able to get a hold of any.  In our country there are "macro" and "micro" breweries.  You'll probably only be able to get beer from our macrobreweries who all brew light American lager or horsepiss/beer-flavored water.  The microbreweries are brewing great stuff that, in my opinion, can't be matched outside of Belgium or Germany, from what I've sampled. Many styles of beer have been invented here but this has all happened since 1978, when competition against the macros was first allowed.  Most of the world knows America for Budweiser, just like they know us for McDonalds but believe me, there's a lot more to offer over here than that!

Well put.  Sorry for my short, unhelpful response, but I despise Budweiser.  It's almost like beer's version of everything that is wrong in the world.  I also boycott McDonald's.

Dylan, have you had the Sheltowee from BBC/Liquor Barn?

Hawkeye

You know, it's funny.  I actually don't mind Budweiser or Busch Light.  These are really the only two "macro" beers I can drink.  I think it may be mostly sentimental.  The first time I got drunk was on Budweiser.  I grew up on mostly Busch Light.  Where I grew up, that's pretty much all anyone drank.  Until I went to college and found Sam Adam's, that is.  Sam showed me that beer really can have good flavor.  With a meal or if I go to a bar these days, it's always a micro brew of some kind.  But if I'm going to hit the river and drink A LOT (and probably spill a lot), it's always Busch Light.

I had some Magic Hat #9 beer recently.  Good stuff!  Haven't had a bad Magic Hat beer yet.
We could.

Funny.  I couldn't afford anything better than Busch Light, Natty Light or Beast Light until I was out of college!  ;D

I still can't believe I could get 2 cases of Beast or Natty Light for the price of a 6 pack of some Bells or Great Lakes now!   :P

BTW, I too like the Magic Hat.

Ok.
there's a beer/whisk(e)y store not far from my place, I'll have a look there. I'll ask him about his American beers and post their names here and ask you're opinions. Last time I was there, it looked like he's got a couple of lesser known (over here at least) American beers in stock (but that was more than a year ago...). Should be interesting!

Good deal, Taxman. Looking forward to seeing what you can get a hold of.

Rowan, I have had Sheltowee which is only available at Liquor Barn.  They have pretty good stuff.  The whole BBC thing can get confusing.  The BBC tap room on Main is no longer actually affiliated with the restaurant, but it's the original brewer's place and he still has rights to the name.  BBC does great stuff no matter the moniker.  I wish their brews, in general, would have a little more body and that goes for the Sheltowee Brews, as well.

Ended up getting a case of this a few days ago. Its decent, but quite heavy for a summer style beer. Not something I would buy a case of again, although I might have one here or there if I see it in a bar/restaurant.

I was wondering how it was after you mentioned it.

Hawkeye, you were going to the Sam Adams brewery right? Did you go yet or when are you going?

Walts, I did TRY to go.  Went to Boston over the holiday weekend.  Had planned on going to the brewery on Monday the 5th, all along.  Woke up around 11am from a night of drinking and headed out.  Stumbled upon Chowderfest.  Since it was high on the priority list to try some Chowder, had to stop there for a little bit.  Then walked the redline and checked out a few shops.  Made it to the Sam Adams brewery around 2-2:30, only to find out tours were booked for the rest of the day.  We were handed a nice keychain and told to try this Moon Lounge or whatever it's called, and that they would have Sam Adams beers we couldn't get anywhere else.  As much as we wanted to see the brewery itself, trying these exotic beers was really my main reason for wanting to go.  So, we go to this lounge, only to be greeted with a sign saying that they're closed for a company retreat.  Bummer.  We ended up at this bar where (supposedly) the first Sam Adams was sold and Mystic River and all these other movies were filmed.  Disappointing, to say the least, but I had a good time in Boston.  The Pops were pretty amazing as were the fireworks, the lobster, and the chowdah.

I guess I did get to have some of the new (I think...new to me anyway) Sam Adams Brick Red beer (at Cheers).  THAT was mighty tasty!  Other than that, haven't had any new beers in awhile.
We could.

That sucks that you didn't make the tour. But you got the chowdah (I assume it was awesome?) Sounds like everything other than the brewery tour you hit up. It sounds like a great time was had!  8-)

This World Champion Won't Leave Cleveland
Today at 1:50pm
GLBC brews limited release, pub exclusive "Quitness"

July 13, 2010--CLEVELAND, OHIO--Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC), the award-winning craft brewer of lagers and ales and recipient of multiple world champion titles, announces the limited release of its new pub exclusive "Quitness". "Quitness", named for obvious reasons given the recent "Decision", is a cask conditioned, dry hopped India Pale Ale that is sure to be as bitter as the mood of Cleveland these days! "Connecting to our city, our fans and our community has made Great Lakes Brewing Company what it is today. Making lemonade out of lemons comes naturally as evidenced by some of our other beers like the Burning River Pale Ale and Blackout Stout. Rest assured Cleveland – GLBC isn't going anywhere and we will continue to win world [beer] championships," comments Patrick Conway, co-owner of GLBC.

"Quitness" is slated for GLBC training camp (the Brewpub that is) starting at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 until Saturday, July 17, 2010 (while supplies last). This IPA will be drawn from a firkin and only available in the GLBC Brewpub located across from the West Side Market on Market Avenue in Cleveland (sorry, no growlers). "Quitness" will inevitably come and go, so be sure to be there for the home opener!

Thanks for the heads-up Headdy!  I may have to go to Cleveland this weekend to try this beer.  Haven't been there yet either so this might be a good excuse.

Looks like they have a TON of pub-exclusive beers, although who knows how many are available at a given time.

Hawkeye,

They do have a lot of different pub exclusive brews, but as you said, they are not all available at the same time.

I have to say, I love hearing about this latest brew.  Quitness is a classic twist on the Witness campaign ran by Nike for LBJ up in Cleveland.  Leave it to GLBC to come up with yet another clever name pertaining to one of the city's more imfamous moments for one of their brews.  ;D
