LMAO...PISSERS! HA. I have often wondered if people actually do it. We had to leave the rail in Portland '08 during Dondante or there was going to be piss all over the place. It sucked but I can't always time my bladder with MMJ's set time.

I think it goes without saying that one will encounter folks gettin outa hand at any place with a large crowd and booze.  I was on the rail right in front of carl and yeah people were smoking squares and green , but thats to be expected in my opinion.  As for people who are just dicks and have a lack of respect for their fellows, thats a different story. Im actually just inspired to hear bout the folks stayin sober at shows.  Ive been to many jacket shows over the past several years and the other night was my first experience bein sober at a show.  Ive been sober for a couple years now and im comfortable bein around all that.  The guys played with as much energy and passioin as ever before and it was a magical experience. Peace

QuoteThis has been really bothering me, and I'm really glad that someone brought it up...
get drunk, get high - I don't care, its a concert. Just don't be surprised if I 1, laugh at you or 2, push your drunk ass off of me if you land on me.
what I can't get past is the disrespect. throwing things at the band? are you effing kidding me? who raises these nasty little mongrels? and the talking... for crissakes, the talking. why in THE HELL would anyone pay 50 dollars to go to a show and then talk through the whole thing? I mean I LOVE Dondante, but everytime Jacket plays it, I'm thinking, "here we go... I have to listen to Mr. Polo shirt-fucker talk about god knows what and give his buddy a pictoral slide show on his I-phone." Has going to a concert become simply bragging rights rather than having an experience? like putting a stupid sticker on the back of your car that tells the world that you ran a marathon?
And it isn't just MMJ shows - it is every concert I've been to in the past 10 or so years. I know Jim is a classy cat and all, but I really wish he'd take the Jeff Tweedy approach, and call these little rat bastards out.

end rant.

I made a poll on this dave matthews band message board about the lamest shit dmb fans do at a show and do you what won the poll? (other).  do you want to know what this collective "other" group was complaining about?

Getting Pissed and Puked on.

At DMB shows there have been 100's of documented incidents of people getting pissed and puked on.  From the looks of it, those fans are trickling in along with the pearl jam hardcore's, some phish phans, and other bigger fan bases.

It's going to get worse I think.  The first "getting pissed on at an MMJ show" story will be the end of the fanbase's purity.  Once the pissers come, we are fucked.

Oh, we had a pisser a couple years ago.  I'd love to find that thread.  It was a classic.

I almost brought up that thread in the Classic Forum Quotes thread. That whole thread was pure comedy!

Im taking my 11 year old son to a band he really likes, I hope the fans in Cary NC have more class. I dont want his first concert experience to be a mess.

Your 11 year old digs MMJ? That's awesome.

Up until about 2004, the Jacket shows had perhaps the most amiable, respectful and friendliest crowds at any rock show I'd experienced. I truly believe the band's professionalism and good vibes helped foster this environment. And people rocked out just as hard as the band.

But things have changed radically since then, with the crowds seeming to have ever higher percentages of jerks puking on people, passing out and generally being rude to their fellow concert goers.  The change has been pretty dramatic. Attending has sort of gone from a celebration to surviving.

It's a real shame, because the band and the rest of their fans deserve better.

I've always been a believer that kindness is cool, but it is obvious from the comments on here that many folks claim that "it's a rock concert dude!" and that makes it okay.  I disagree with that sentiment. It is never okay to be a jerk.

my first GA mmj show was the philly show in '08. my buddy and i were right up front. beforehand, we drank and got ready. i was drunk but i consider myself one of the most gentle drunks in the world. i am shy by nature, and i rarely make a scene. to my surprise in philly, the crowd around us was pretty cool. everyone was having fun but no one was being a dick. i had flip flops on and no one stepped on me. the guy behind me had to pee, but he did so in a cup and i got no splash effect. the whole experience was just awesome.

i think anu's concern is moslty a hit or miss thing (i hope). i've had a grand time at all my mmj shows. i know they are more popular than ever, but their crowds are still better than every other band i've ever seen, except for rusted root haha.

to the bolded.  that is the exact shit we have to look out for.  there is no possible way you could go to a show right now with a cup of piss and not get hit with some splash back, even if you tried to stand still you'd still get pushed by the force of the rock.

people who don't just take literally 3 or 4minutes to run to the bathroom to piss in a usually empty bathroom are gross.  Dancing around with a glass of piss is one of the nastiest things ever.

See, this is the shit we have to look out for.  If we just chalk this all up to it's just "sex drugs and rock and roll", we lose this band to the losers.  I have been to way too many concerts over the last 25+ yrs to have this happen to one of my fav bands.  I don't care if you take off all your clothes off in front me and f**k whoever in front of me.  Just don't get your beer, piss, puke, blood or whatever on me.  Be respectful of the ones around you is all I am getting at.  I care too much about this band to let this happen.

These might help solve part of the problem.   They work great for not losing your place on the rail, You just have to be careful not to drink to much.

My first show was in ATL at Chastain. I wasn't really surprised when the lights came down and it smelled like the whole crowd just lit up. I expected that. What I hated were the kids who had never listened to Z or anything except "Highly Suspicious." They talked the whole time even during "Friends Again" and "Anytime" when all I really wanted was to enjoy those songs live with my friends and Jim's voice.

As for the pissing, I actually had a guy stand on either side of him and piss on the concrete behind the seats. Nevermind that it probably seeped    onto the chair below him, it reeked and I had to smell that for the entire encore set.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first MMJ show, I just wished the crowd were more fans than kids wanting to socialize. It would have been better in a smaller venue where the band cold play into the night. But, still a great first experience  ;D.

Interesting thread.   My question is why do people think this is happening now?

It's not like the band is growing wildly more popular and therefore attracting a bigger, less respectful crowd (or do you think so?).   doesn't seem like ticket sales are any faster than last tour- the band has no new album, and has kept a fairly low profile the last 18 months.

Is it that peoples' civility have gone that downhill since MMJ toured last?   I don't get it.

yes, as the fanbase widens, so does the no of 'non music fan' fans, catch 22 of watching your favorite band gain more exposure

That sounds about right...Hilarious. I remember the weeks following the airing of My Morning Straitjacket there was a never ending stream of people on MMJ facebook showing up and saying shit just like that!
