First let me say that I'm not really a tweeter. I've had an account for about a year and half and have probably tweeted about 7 times.
That being said, I usually go to this site once a day, just to check for any interesting updates, and also to click the twitter links on the right side of the homepage.
While I do not think that anybody should control what another person tweets, or chooses to tweet, I must say that I am somewhat disapointed in MMJ's tweets.
Many of the we get "Tom picture Time" or "Jim's photo of the day" or "Patrick's Pics," and while I appreicate the updated tweets, I am usually disapointed and frustrated that they are, more often then not, just random 'artistic style' pictures of things.
If I wanted artistic style pictures of things, I'd probably go to a photographer's webpage and scroll through his gallery.
So what am I (semi)complaining about. Well, I've been told the guys are working on an album. How about My Morning Jacket tweets pictures of them(the actual guys) in the studio. Or even just taking a lunch break. Or drinking a beer. Or taking a poop.....ok, maybe not taking a poop. But an actual picture of people in the band, as opposed to a bunny mask.
Sorry if I'm being a dick. Perhaps someone will say, "Haldon, be appreciative of your daily picture of the side of a building."
Just curious if anyone feels the way I did, and I was also hoping that perhaps one of these days, as we all eagerly await the new album, that we would be treated to a tasty pic of some genious music making.
stepping down of the soapbox.......
I also would like more relevant pics. However, I'm not surprised we aren't getting them. Mystery has always been a big part of this band. It fuels the anticipation.
The bands tweeting is probably the only tweets I look forward to when I'm twittering, hehe. I like the pics of denise and friends. But it would be cool if they threw in a random pic of one of them playing or eating or something.

agreed on both counts .. not surprised but wish there were more MMJ/in-studio/what-have-you pix. my favorite tweets to-date are always of pooch & denise  i really loved the post-show setlist ones. at the end of the day though, i'm just glad the MMJ twitter account is active :)
I disagree entirely. First, lp has said she's got some stuff from the studio. I just find it interesting to see what creative types do when they're not doing their main type of creativity.
It's sort of like seeing a teacher somewhere that's not the classroom.
Can we speculate on today's tweet?
If you add one to every lamp, but then have the last lamp steal the second to last lamps one, then read it backwards, you get 5-24-11. The new album release date! It's a Tuesday!

I like the photos a lot. I see them as a peek behind the curtain, where you get to see things that the band finds beautiful, funny and/or things that inspire them. I think it's a very personal twitter compared to other artists twitters. My Morning Jacket share the number one spot in my heart with Bright Eyes and just as an example the Bright Eyes twitter, as beautiful as it is, is not very personal. I'm pretty sure Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis or Nate Walcott doesn't have anything to do with what's posted there.
It's very easy being a MMJ fan, they're so productive it seems there's something happening almost every day. If it's not a show, it's an interview being published, or DJing on a radio show or a tweet. There's almost always something. Maybe it's because I was a Bright Eyes fan long before I was a MMJ fan, but when I compare the output of info, it's a big difference, even considering Bright Eyes put out a lot of stuff too.
I'll forever be grateful for the music that MMJ makes, for the joy that I get out of it, everything beyond that is just adding to the excess. So I'm happy that they even have a twitter and that it's so personal, but that's like the 100th item (if even that) on the list of things that I get out of being a MMJ fan.

that seems like quite a stretch, but shouldn't we hear something about the release date soon? it's less than five months.
I like the tweets. I'm not very big into social media stuff and only follow MMJ on twitter but I set up MMJ tweets to go directly to my phone like texts and I love getting them, like the band is texting me!! It was awesome during the tour and in the build up to all the T5 madness, I was getting like several a day some days. It always made me smile. And I'll agree that some of it lately seems, well, random, but I still dig it and am glad that they didn't stop tweeting even though less is going on right now.
I'm still surprised they have a twitter account.
Also, some of those seemingly random photos are actually glimpses into the studio and the recording of the album.
So the new album's title is "Oxen"?

I'm guessing a new slow jam titled "Oxen"!!!!!!

I don't know how the name "Oxen" specifically came about, but the reason is that confusion arose with it and How Do You Know on setlists, so they started calling it by a different name. Check out the 2004-05-28 Toronto show for a nice explanation from Jim hisownself.
Also, I believe it was labeled "Oxen" on the T5 setlist! Is that right, Penny? (Edit: I see in the T5 pix and vids thread that it was indeed.)
The tweets give the impression that sometimes the boys do them themselves (photo of the church with Rev. Ike quote), and sometimes their handlers do them (Pooch and Denise). I really liked the photo of the church with the Rev. Ike quote because it made me feel like I was adventuring with them, seeing what they see. I'd like the tweets to be more "seeing what they see."

r
Yeah I found it intresting it was still being called oxen at T5. I love that song.
does anyone think its weird that they're posting what appears to be a set list full of almost all songs from Z? Its really short too. So what is it, an old set list they found lying around? If its current, it has to be for some special event. They aren't going to go into a regular show in 2011 and play that set list. And I don't see them going into the studio in 2011 and practicing those songs for the shit of it.

Thanks Chris. Makes sense.
Reading through this thread makes me feel like I just watched an episode of Lost. I enjoyed it, but it didn't answer any questions.
Oxen is just another name, just as It beats for you was also known as space heart configuration 52(not sure the exact number?) in A minor as stated during a bit of banter in a show back when. Perhaps we'll never know the true story behind the name Oxen, but I still call it Oxen to this day because by the time it was recorded for real it was all i'd known it by.
That "setlist" picture looks like some sharpie scribbling done on a piece of 2"x4" wood or something. Probably in the cabin at Allair Studios or during a rehearsal somewhere else before Z was recorded. Just my guessing.. probably not true. Kind of a nostalgic picture in my opinion. Makes me want to go back and watch the "Z" EPK video. Anyone remember the camera shot that panned over a listing of songs they were working on and noticing a few of the songs that didn't make the cut (one being Devil's Peanut Butter) which saw the light of day but I don't remember if any others ever did.

I meant to say something about It Beats 4 U and its funny alternative titles! I've heard a couple of different ones for it, including this gem from Boulder in 2004: "Space Manner Transgression Policy #29 in B-Flat Major"...
I vaguely remember what you're talking about in that video, I need to take a look at that again too.

it's from the Z EPK if i'm not mistaken...
The first time I had flan, it was after I saw a movie which, I'm pretty sure, starred Christopher Walken. He was like somebody's neighbor who lost their job. I think Walken's character was kind of crazy (go figure) and i remember him saying that he loved flan. Afterwards, I went to a mexican restaurant and tried it. Not really my cup of tea. Had to pretty much choke it down. Anybody know what movie I'm talking about? Within the last 10 years, and I believe Walken and the co-star (also a big name i think - possibly ben stiller) are in the car when it's pouring rain. they are up at a cabin.
that would be Envy starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black

This is amazing on so many levels, firstly the fact that creme brulee in any context is just perfection. Secondly, I find the juxtaposition between Jim's flowery, overly-imaginative descriptions and M's succinct reviews hilarious (M even abbreviates creme brulee. ;D) Yes, boys, please keep this up. It's a WIN.

yeah, this is me not hijacking the thread, but yeah..studying for the NY Bar
trying to take care of work as well as put in the study hours is wearing real thin on me...i'm looking forward to the end of February...i just want to get it over with...although I'm not looking forward to being in buffalo at the end of february..i hear its cold
I thought you were defending Phish fans in Florida, no? Was that someone else?
Anyway, Buffalo will surely suck if it snows. I was in Syracuse for 3 winters, where we competed for the annual "golden snowball award" for most snow. I'm lucky I got Albany because I gotta get back in NJ for the NJ bar after the MBE
But yeah, this is me procrastinating. I'm not very studious and have no idea how to go about this crap

So, uh, yeah...Twitter!
last bit....still in Miami...still doing lots of drug defense
actually got an open offer to practice with an attorney in NY who I have intense respect for, when I was up there for T-5. He convinced me to take the NY bar, and come up if/whenever I wanted. I figured that my professional life was not going to get any less hectic, so I might as well take the NY bar now instead of 2-3 years down the road.
although, i'm mildly regretting the decision because its completely kicking my ass right now..i had forgotten what a bear it is to study for the bar....but i told myself i'd give it 2 chances (feb and july) and see what happens

My work blocks some images from showing, so I have to wait until I get home to see the pics on Twitter that br00ke's been posting.
The picture I refer to suggests (to me) they've got a pretty simple set up for recording, so I'm hoping that will turn focus away from studio tricks and towards a more raw performance captured in the moment, give 'em room to be brave and creative. There is a rawness to much of At Dawn, in my opinion.

As someone who recently quit the facebook but supplanted it with more active twittering, twitter ain't all that bad. It's what you make of it. Follow an narcissist and you get a bunch of boring shit about nothing
Follow Wayne Coyne and get sneak peaks at new tracks and pics of his wife's bewbs
Follow lp and win $1,000
Oh, and that pic, the first thing that came to mind was "whoof arted?"
Then it looked more like a moment where someone ripped the needle off the record.
I can see it now, Carl comes running in out of view, all out of breath..."OMG YOU GUYS YOU GUYS I JUST HEARD OUR SONG IN A MICHELOB ULTRA COMMERCIAL!" ****zzzzzzzzrrrrrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuup*****

Hahahahahahah I thought I heard there was some pretty serious bewb posts on Mr. Coyne's tweets (hahahahah if that doesn't sound so dirty :P) I'm sure he posts some pretty sweet things too. I dunno.... I've been on the fence for at least a year on these online things... I've had a myspace since '04, and that used to take care of everything. And it's now pretty much under, and I can't even really get behind it, or back it up, because it eats all the available memory on comps now and loads slow as hell. And the format took a huge crap. That alone makes it suck, if it woulda stayed simpler I'd still be on it more.
But whoa whoa, serious win $1000 with MMJ tweets?! Sweet lordy!! :o
I was kidding about $1,000!
Facebook is dangerous now that is has begun co-copting user images into advertisements. Usually you get paid for that sort of thing. So yeah...I think you're safer staying away. Twitter is still relatively anonymous though. I just use it to get pictures of Outerspace and MMJ really, which are not always mutually exclusive.

Second time I saw MMJ I got some great pics and video of Jim up front, the "Jerryness" brought a tear to my eye and soul, oh how I loved that man. Jim is his own man, but he and Jerry have that soulful connect for me which I'm grateful... pun intended.

He's an amazing drummer! He used to play for a Nirvana cover band and I would go see them just to watch him tear up the drumset. He owns and operates The Funeral Home Recording Studios which is literally above an actual working funereal home and has produced a lot of the great music that comes out of this city. That 5 disc "What happens on 10.10.10" comp is pretty much all Kevin. Jim has recorded some tracks there including his work for the Bad Religion comp and that children's puppet show soundtrack he did for Squallis Puppeteers. Obscure, for sure, but that's cause it's local ya'll!
Without turning this into a Wax Fang thread, I think my favorite thing about them is that when you turn it up, you can listen to each track on each song and hear magic going on, similar to MMJ. I'll use Lay Low as an example: listen hard enough, and you'll hear each guitar doing its own thing, as well as the bass, the keys, and the drums. Same thing on WF.
It's probably what makes me like a band the most.
In other news, what Bad Religion comp?

Y'know, Haldon, its hard to say for sure, but since your comment that started this thread, the random art pics have been replaced with exactly what you (and we) asked for. If you were the catalyst, thank you. If the band was "listening", thank you. Can't wait to hear what you've come up with in that space. May 17 sounds good to me.

First of all, that is one of my all-time favorite B&J flavors. That and oatmeal cookie I will give a nut for.
Second, I think you're right about the contest, but I think they need to be caption contests, and winner gets a free box set of T5 recordings
Firstly, let's not go overboard giving props to Haldon -- all we need is that guy becoming even more aware of his awesomeness. ;)
Secondly, Creme Brulee Ben and Jerry's?! /head explodes/ Incidentally, my favorite B&J flavor of all time was Wild Maine Blueberry, about 20 years retired now, I think. Which is a good thing, because I would have expired long ago due to arteries clogged up tighter than Patrick's drums.
Thirdly, I like your idea choder, I want that inevitable T5 box set in my hands!
