I am constantly blown away by how much of the music this band puts out that's incredible. I've joked before that I'd be happy to listen to JJ sing the phone book which probably isn't too far from the truth. But every bad records something that isn't loved by all so I was wondering if people had to pick one song as their least favorite what it would be?
Personally I will always go get another beer when they play "Librarian"

Another vote for I'm Amazed. I think it sounds worse live, I really can't stand Carls back-up vocals on this song. Nails on a chalkboard... Ok, maybe not that bad ;D

The first time I heard Librarian (JJ Solo at SXSW '08) i texted my wife and said i had just heard the most beautiful song i'd ever heard live.
two halves. that is not mmj, its some crappy alt rock band. the only song MMJ has that i dont like.
I'm Amazed and Librarian for worst song = TOTAL FAIL
First of all, there is not "worst" MMJ song for me, only a least favorite!!! Secondly, I can understand that Librarian and I'm Amaxed may not be everyone's favorite, but I have a hard time imagining these as anyone's least favorite.
I'll probably get flamed, but I think Honest Man totally breaks up the flow of my favorite MMJ studio album, At Dawn, so I'd go with that one. But even HM has its charms....
for me - it's all relative to the listening situation...admit I am often guilty of the slow-song-is-on-time-to-get-a-beer-move...but commuting home from work, pretty much exclusively listen to the slower stuff to mellow out
pretty much every song that I have disliked, has eventually grown on me in some way, shape or form.

This is the replay I should have had. Thanks!
even Circuital (song and album) took a couple runs through for me to get feeling it but now, love the new album. Front to back, I think it's awesome, with tons of potential for live-show tweaks / progressions / versions.
Listening to album versions of old tracks, and what they have done with them lvie over the years...has me excited for what's to come from the new tracks

I personally cannot stand "Touch Me Pt.1"...wow, it looks like everyone's least favorite songs are coming off EU!
One song that I suspect will get some votes is "Into The Woods", but put me down as one who loves it.

I love into the woods too. I think if it didn't have the kitten and baby killing lyrics, more people would like it. Its such a cool, creepy, smoky(?) song. I feel like I'm walking in a dream through the mist through a dangerous wooded area towards a log cabin where some crazy nasty things are going down. It is a great song.
I'm going to have to agree with unravelled on this one. Honest Man gets skipped very often when I listen to AD. It might be because I want to hear some X-Mas Curtain, but still.

Yeah, ITW sounds like it could be from a David Lynch film!
Basically Sec Walkin, Two Halves, I'm Amazed, Thank you too are all bummers in my book. The Evil Urges tour always came to a halt when these songs were played. I am starting to think Touch Me 1 is in the same book in a live setting. It's okay on the album but it brings nothing to a live setting.
So funny that everyone has songs that alot of people mention as their worst is some of my favorites. Shows the variety of how preferential taste can vary from one person to the next. My list is below....
It's been a great 3 or 4 years - Chocolate and Ice
Good Intentions - Evil Urges
Octoplasm - (not on an album, fan club release)
The Year in Review - Song Ohio
I think most all can agree with my list. ;D
#1 Sec Walking. #2 Two Halves #3 What a Wonderful Man #4 Outta My System #5 First Light. does my list give away my fondness of pre-Z mmj? I'll be honest not only are these my least favs they are no good. I see Librarian and into the woods was getting alot of hits.....i like them both.
Two Halves is the only MMJ song that I actually and actively dislike. Gets my vote hands down.
I really dislike Highly Suspicious.
They Ran (Tennessee Fire version)
I think part of it is b/c it sounds like I recorded it through the pocket of a trench coat.

YOU LEAVE BOSTON OUT OF THIS
Librarian is the only song on EU that in my Opinion has the real MMJ sound as far as recording style. In that I mean it is one of the few songs on that album that has subtleties. Gave me goosebumps.
I'll admit I don't care for Sec Walkin because of the lyrics and Two Halves just got stale after a few listens.
Any slow song that doesn't have mojo on the studio release has always made up for it live.
I know everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I can't believe some people answers! I love Honest Man - provides a good kick midway through all that mellowness. Wonderful Man - this song rocks and probably has their hardest riff, you're all wrong. Thank You Too - my favorite song from EU, classic MMJ with a lot of soul. I'm Amazed - solid track and is catchy. I hated Highly Suspicious at first, but then I saw them play it live!
I literally liked everything pre-EU, from the b-sides, compilation tracks, EP's etc...So my least favorite songs would be Touch Me pt 1 - and they seem to play this live a lot, i don't think it translates well live. Two Halves - i think we all agree on this one. Aluminum Park - kind of a rehash of Wonderful Man.

You've got it all wrong! Touch Me 1 is amazing. Two Halves - infintely better than Im Amazed. Alumium Park is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite song on EU
I think its all just a matter of opinion but it is shocking in some ways.
What I find shocking that people are saying they dont like:
1) Run Thru
2) Remnants
3) Honest Man
4) Highly Suspicious
5) Aluminum Park
6) Wonderful Man
7) They Ran
What doesnt suprise me:
1) Two Halves (one my least favorites)
2) Touch Me Pt 1 (I like this song, but I could see how others may not like it)
3) Sec Walkin' (I like it as well. Not lyrically deep I suppose)
This is a very interesting thread because it illustrates the vast differences of MMJ fans and what their distaste are.
Wow this is a tough one to answer, I guess I would have to say "Two Halves" or "Sec Walkin"
I am a bit shocked always by how much people get into "I'm Amazed" although at the KFY Yum Center Louisville show when they broke out a little metal guitar at the end, I admit I got into that, lol

Every time I hear 2 halves it sounds like Frank. He runs the record dept. at Salzers, the big indy music store in Ventura.

Why? When talking about sucky music, what the prob? Just another faceless corporate rock band that dominated radio when I was in high school. Foreigner, Journey, Kansas, Bad Company, etc. You should feel lucky there was good music when you were that age, and ways to listen to it. I had 2 radio stations in LA, or had to buy something based on Rolling Stone or LA Times. I got a lot of crappy albums from the 70's. Corporate rock? I don't recall American Express sponsoring Boston when I saw them play in 1979 ;)
Corporate as in production, not marketing. Those bands had very little creative control. The record companies were in charge. That is why Neil Young did so much wacked stuff in the 80's as a protest to Geffen trying to tell him to make Harvest over and over. He paved the way for a band like MMJ to make an album die hard fans think sucks, like EU.
It's not as conspiracy -like as you think. One of the bigger cases in Copyright law results from Tom Scholz's vice-like grip on creative control
Also, Boston's S/T is one of the greatest albums to ever be an album.

Me too. I recall the way that album sounded was quite remarkable for the time with most of the instruments recorded in Tom Scholz's basement studio (standard practice for faceless corporate rock bands of the 70's).
However, in order to try to salvage this terrible display of going off thread topic, I will say the worst song off that album is Let Me Take You Home Tonight.

Touch Me Pt 1 and Two Halves is really all I could even think of as being about average. Maybe "Outta My System", but that song kicked butt live at Mountain Jam
Cool to see lots of interesting replies.. not surprised to see two Halves & Sec walkin appear frequently they'd probably make a top 5 least favs list if I made one. I know a lot of people like Librarian but it just doesn't do it for me. I'm not crazy about I'm Amazed either - used it my handle b/c I was just baked & had to think of one ;D - but must say the version of I'm Amazed from the Louisville webcast rocked hard and sounded about as good as I've heard it.

Sec Walkin has reminded me of some song that I can't place from 70s AM radio -- maybe it is Ronnie Milsap so you cleared that up for me.
There isn't a bad song until EU -- I thought Into the Woods sucked, but it's grown on me so I'll have to go with Two Halves.
I have always liked Honest Man, and I'm amazed has a great pop sensibility, sounds great live and my wife likes it.

Not only is it not the full song, it was only the middle. Last tour they did the middle and the third part. Now there is not an "Oh Shit Run" to be heard.

Highly Suspicious. Never really works for me, and I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to these guys. Maybe I need to hear it live, and I see they played it this week. Do like the guitar solo, though.
Lots of EU chat here. Seems evey song is pretty polarizing.
I love Touch Me 1 and Thank You Too. Like, really love
I'm Amazed is such a fun live song
however: Librarian, Sec Walkin, Look At You, Two Halves and Aluminum Park all do nothing for me.
Into the Woods, but not because of the lyrics; it's the circus/carnival-y sounding oomph pa pa music. Those lyrics with different music would be fabulous!
I agree about the recording of They Ran. Great Song, almost sounds like someone put the wrong take on the record by accident. The bass specificaly sounds fucked up. I always think something is wrong with my stero when it comes on and then I'm like....nope, it just sounds fucked up. :'( Oh well, It's my ONLY complaint about that record the rest of the production is flat out amazing. The vocal layering on that song is so sweet.

I'm surprised to see Touch Me Pt. 1, Honest Man, and Librarian getting mentioned numerous times, I love all those songs. I'm Amazed isn't too bad either, especially for a mainstream-geared tune. I was not a big fan of Outta My System at first but it has definitely grown on me. It's very catchy and just kind of a fun little jam. First Light, although I think it translates very well live but lyrcally, there just isn't much there. So I can see how that one get's some votes. I saw that stream, it was alright. to me it's the weakest song in the setlist right now. If the song was shelved for awhile maybe it'd grow on me like Wonderful Man did but as of now it needs to go. It blows knowing they're going to be playing it all year, and most likely at the show I'm at. Honestly, this tour will make or break their live experience for me. I've seen them enough now where I'm starting to expect them to feel that way too. this Victory Dance->Circuital->Off The Record shit to open and then Smokin'->Partial Run Thru->Touch Me Pt. 2 closer already bores the fuck out of me. their encores are pretty predictable too. they need to mix it up big time and swap the 15songs they play every show around and out often.
not to go off on a setlist rant but that's the one thing I do not understand about this band. their repetitive setlists. Jim giving some excuse about it helping him get in the zone when they play the same set every night isn't going to cut it either. they need to be creative this tour, they've been riding on golden and one big holiday long enough.

I'll gladly pay to see that set time and time again. Do I wish they would changes things up now and again, sure. But they are absolutely killer no matter what set they produce. If your bored, then don't go. It's that simple. I'm Amazed is a great song. Just because it doesn't fit your description of a stellar song doesn't make it any less incredible.
I hear ya I definitely hope they switch up the set lists a little this year, although they look pretty standard so far. I think when a band plays varying mixtures of songs it really makes shows special and keeps fans hungry to see them. Sometimes it's pure magic and sometimes people get disappointed, but it's better not knowing what you're gonna get.

Just because it doesn't fit your description of a stellar song doesn't make it any less incredible.
if you're bored don't go? how about fuck you. I'm Amazed isn't a great song. just because you want to eat every drop of jizz that comes out of the tip of jim james cock does not help your opinion in this conversation. I'm all for fluffing the fuck out of this band but I'm amazed is pretty lame and their setlists are predictable. it's how it is. if you don't understand my complaints you haven't been around that long and have no fucking clue what you're talking about.
Well your a hostile little fuck, ain't chya? Apparently there was piss in your cheerios when you heard I'm Amazed. I'm not going to regress into a petty shouting match over this garbage. Everyone is entitled to there own assumptions as to what a song sounds like and what setlist they should play. And you know the saying, assumptions are like assholes, everyones got one. Only difference is yours is a foul diseased one straight rotted out and only blows whiffs of nonsensical hotair that no body really cares for. Just callin it as I see it duuuuude.

Pure and honest is subjective to the opinion itself. Difference is you feel yours is supreme above all else. I could care less about you being nice to me. This whole thread is about opinions and not one is going to change the few of the others. Your hostility is the issue at play here. You come in being a wise ass and that's what you'll get back.

1. I'm Amazed is the most boring song they have.
2. I agree 100% with Sticky that they're setlists need to change. They have a very extensive catalog and it sucks driving all around the country and shit to see maybe one different song a show. Obviously bands are going to play their fan favorites at every show, but if they play OBH, Golden, TWTHS, Gideon, Mageetah, Wordless, Off The Record, Smokin From Shootin, TMIGTS P2, Anytime, Dondante, I'm Amazed, and Highly every show, they still have 10 (give or take) songs they can switch up. I know they're going to play 5 or so new songs every show this tour, but why do they need to fill the other 5 slots with the same 5 songs every show. Especially last year when they didn't have Circuital to play all the time. They closed out their first tour with 3 covers every night in 2010, which is just ridiculous. It's awesome that they threw Steam Engine in the mix this tour, but now that I've seen it 3 times in 2011, it's getting less exciting. It's not exciting at all to go into a show knowing what you're going to see...

1. I'm Amazed is more boring then two halves? I not even saying I'm Amazed is one of my favorites but that's a pretty big stretch to say it is the absolute bore of all their catalog. There are several songs that rank up there with being even more boring then Im Amazed.
2. I agree they need to mix up their set. Never said I didn't agree. Just if were truly boring, then why would we all pay good money to watch a boring show? I certainly hope they do change it up a bit this tour. But end the end, we will all still go regardless. You have to remember they are now really just getting started with this tour so as time goes on and they feel more comfortable with their mix, they'll change things up.

I would rather see Two Halves because both Jim and Tom play bass and that is the only song where they do that. to me that is unique and what I'm all about. plus, I think two halves has always gotten way too much heat. regardless, if I got Two Halves I'd kinda be psyched because I haven't seen it 6 or 7 times like Golden or something. which is another song that the band has made me tired of. It's not a bad song at all, I don't listen to it that much but no matter what, for the most part, every my morning jacket show I listen to will have that song on there.
With that said, there really isn't a song worse than I'm amazed. maybe as bad, but no worse and if so, not by much.
My hope is that they don't begin to rely on these overly elaborate stage setups that have to be set and sync'd up every time they play before hand. I guess music fans get spoiled when they're into bands like phish or the dead and the lights aren't preset. kuroda, the phish lighting dude uses the lights as his canvas. that's what MMJ needs so they can TRULY get in the zone. an improvised lighting dude. you'll most obviously notice the presets on a song like touch me pt. 2 at the beginning and the end before good intentions. the low lights that pulsate, etc.
Even tho they have embraced all this awesome technology they have to make it work for them rather than them work around it. I've heard of Jim playing a different acoustic song at the beginning of the encore than planned or them cutting songs but rarely does it seem like they just choose a song on the fly. and it all has to do with presets. which is a major hindrance to the zone. I'm sure the shows will rock but they've been extremely reserved since the MOF break. that's just an opinion tho. the Phone Went West from Mountain Jam was one of the best things I've ever heard from them to date. they've got the power, they just have to truly unleash it rather than building a fanbase with simple minded setlists. you rarely see an album closer open a show, which they totally could. Touch Me Pt. 2 would blow the roof off. Dondante would blow the roof off. it's artistic and creative risk, they don't do it enough.

As I've said a few times here, I liked I'm Amazed when it came out, much less when every time I went to a Kohls, Supermarket, Elevator, Doctor's Office, FM Radio Station, and Abortion Clinic all I'd hear was I'm Amazed. It took the edge off real quick
I'm Amazed is my jam - I've always loved when Jim sings "I'm amazed at the lack of evolution
I'm amazed at the lack of faith". Love that song. I like it better than Sec' Walkin, Two Halves and Librarian combined.

Agree with everything above.
I don't have a least favorite song but TMIGS I, I'm Amazed, Librarian, Two Halves, Thank You Too and Highly Suspicious all make me cringe and I have to fake it live. ;D
Mine would have to be "Look at you"
Thank You Too. During the chorus I picture a vast field of Christians with their arms raised in the air, praising their Lord for all of his kindness and knowledge. I mean, I have nothing against religion, nor do I think this song is directly about God, but it just sounds corny and...worship-y?

That is really a good point about the light show setup. I hope that doesnt handcuff them to a set number of songs they can pretty much play to utilize that setup. I know how you feel about Im Amazed and Golden being played so much. Even though I like the songs alot doesnt mean I want it to be played every show. As many times as I have seen Pearl Jam, there wasn't a time they didnt play Evenflow. I love the song but after seeing it so many times, it loses it luster.
Such an inspirational feel good thread. ::)

I figured since BH posted finally here, I could too. I will probably be shunned for this, but I've never really enjoyed Old Sept. Blues. The "never were a drawback, always were an asset" lyric is awkward, and some of the harmony makes my head tilt (which could be the point).
Also, I really don't want some of you people wandering the earth not knowing how to spell "fellate." Go ahead, call me a Spelling Nazi -- or blow me. ;)
I was trying to defend Thank You Too by the way. :)

Yeah, I should have included the words "to me" after "awkward," because obviously there will be plenty of people who disagree with that.

If youre looking at it from this angle, Look At You strikes me more along those lines than Thank You Too
