Chelsea Light Moving - (self titled) Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth
County Mice - Hour of the Wolf
I'll add Rhye into the mix it's the second album that I Wish The XX WOULD have made. :drum:
Thoroughly enjoying Country Mice. Thank you for mentioning them. Good Tunes are always a good thing.
Arbouretum - Coming Out of the Fog
Country Mice - Hour of the Wolf
Devendra Banhart - Mala
Josh Ritter - The Beast in its Tracks
Jim James - regions
Listened to Phosphorescent and didn't think it had nearly the magic Here's to Taking it Easy does. Of course, this is just based on one listen.
Anyone listen to the new Nick Cave record through and through? I only got about halfway through, been trying to revisit it.

I've been spinning those nonstop. Have yet you check out the new Phossy but really looking forward to it. I would imagine matching Here's to Taking it Easy is no easy task.
I've been meaning to check out Chelsea Light Moving, but when Thurston played one of their songs with Sharon Van Etten @ Town hall it was absolutely awful.
So far this has been my 2013 playlist. All female led bands.
Lady Lamb The Beekeeper - Ripely Pine
The Joy Formidable - Wolf's Law
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - We The Common
Speck Mountain - Badwater
I agree with JJ, Arbouretum, Country Mice. I would add
Frightened Rabbit
Local Natives
Czarface
Local Natives and Nick Cave are my two favorites so for. But I'm assuming The Nationals new one will take the top spot.
Local Natives' latest album is very good and definitely on my top-10 so far. Also near the top of my list:
Widowspeak
Veronica Falls
Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside
But at the very top - Torres.
Foxygen- We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic
that album really has grown on me

I have bought Phosphorescent and listening to my free download now. Loving it.
Added to Spotify

i just posted that on the truckers board..along with the clip from Jimmy Fallon last month--i can't get enough..
I listened to Foxygen at work today in the background and it didn't really make an impresion...Now I'm home with it cranked up and I'm REALLY loving it. They remind me a bit of if Dr. Dog and The Strokes had a love child.
There are a whole bunch of twists and turns on this record a lot going on....the influences are pretty apparent but I enjoy what they've created out of them.

As much as I love the Phosphorescent and Local Natives albums, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite is my favorite album of the year rather easily. Ive been waiting/hoping for this album (pure blues album) since I first discovered Ben Harper.
Its his best album in over 15 years.
I found it on my hard drive about a month ago and never really heard anybody talking about it. for awhile I thought it might've been a 2012 album that I never got the chance to listen to. glad I'm not alone in loving it though. hard to imagine it not making my top 5 at the end of the year.
So far my favorite albums this year in no order are as followed:
Regions of Light - Jim James
Wakin On A Pretty Daze - Kurt Vile
We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace - Foxygen
Muchacho - Phosphorescent
looking forward to these beauts:
Houndmouth
Wilco
Arcade Fire

No one has mentioned Phoenix! Bankrupt is better than the press would have you believe, but nothing could follow up WAP...

I streamed some of the new Natalie Maines record yesterday and it might be the surprise of the year for me. Wasn't ever a big fan of hers, but I was intrigued to hear her cover of Jeff Buckley's "Lover You Should've Come Over" and it is fantastic. She also covers Floyd "Mother", the Jayhawks "I'd Run Away" and a Patty Griffin tune.
Speaking of Jeff Buckley, the two disc deluxe edition of Live at Sin-e has really been kicking my butt lately. Not a 2013 album, but it has some brilliant covers as well, including three Dylan songs. A very intimate recording, just Jeff and his guitar in a little cafe with lots of banter. A window into his soul.

I remember the first time I sat down with that album with a good set of headphones. I was reading through the liner notes talking about his greatness in those small gigs and just became overwhelmed with emotion. It's weird, but with the banter between songs I felt like I was actually there with him. He had me completely drawn in, but then to know that this amazing talent was taken away from us far too early really depressed me.
I think the Maines album, and any covers album for that matter, is pretty polarizing. Some people get hung up on the originals, and no cover could satisfy them. I'm still waiting for my copy to come in the mail, so I haven't heard the whole album yet, but I think her Buckley cover is pretty stunning.

and after streaming it a couple of times last week, I am definitely looking forward to Vampire Weekend's new album.
Random Access Memories is Phenomenal

I'm very much enjoying the Maines album Marino, even if Ben Harper didn't scuff up the polish a little bit more. She really does show off her chops on Lover You Should've Come Over.
Also wanted to agree with Parker about Dig. It's my song of the year so far.
Im really liking this Deerhunter record, Monomania. I've never listened to Deerhunter before, always got them and Animal Collective confused for some reason (?), but I think i'll start going backwards now.
I'll revisit this thread after Earl Sweatshirt drops 'Doris'

Thanks for reminding me to pick up VW's next album. On the to-do list for the weekend.
Fortunately I am able to get actual advanced copies of CDs (remember those?). And I have to say... that the new Queens of the Stone Age has shot straight to my new favorite album of 2013. It's a little different... kind of dark, and moody... but absolutely incredible. I cannot get enough of it. So yeah... QOTSA "...Like Clockwork". Number 1 with a bullet.

Excited about this one as well, great to see Dave back on the drum and Nick back as well. I think this is a much stronger lineup than some of the others.
Red Fang just announced they'll have another album out this fall, excited about that one.

I have loved both VW and Contra but this is my favorite. I know some VW could be off putting to some but I think people that did not really get into the first two will still enjoy Modern Vampires. It could be my album of the year.
GREAT ALBUM!! I streamed it on Itunes non-stop before the release date, now that I have the album Im sharing the love (burning copies to all my peeps). Favorite VW album so far!
The National's new album, "Trouble will Find Me", is pretty dam good  Haven't listened to it enough to have a final opinion, but it's definitely worth purchasing!
My updated almost half year best of list (limited to 10)
1. The National - Trouble Will Find Me *
2. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City *
3. Phosphorescent - Muchacho *
4. Kurt Vile - Walkin On A Pretty Daze *
5. Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse *
6. Local Natives - Hummingbird
7. Mikal Cronin - MCII
8. The Men - New Moon
9. Yo La Tengo - Fade
10. Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic
I bought a Audio-Technical turntable and earphones and own the top five on vinyl. I LOVE the experience of receiving, opening and listening. For lack of better word it is so much more intimate and enhances the listening experience. Helps to have great recent releases like The National and VW.

I began collecting vinyl about three years ago ( I mostly buy current albums that become my favorites to listen to), but I haven't had the chance/means to buy a turn table. Feel like its time for me to sacrifice on other expenses in order to finally get my own turntable. What model did you just buy and would you recommend it to others?

I have not! But I will!
I haven't even given the new National record a real good listen, and i'm seeing them tonight...
I will also say that Jason Isbells new album is an "awesome album of 2013"
but... my 2nd five star record of the year is Evil Friends by Portugal. The Man. The first being Phosphorescent.
New Lightning Dust coming June 25th!!! Just ordered deluxe package which comes with vinyl, CD, poster, bonus 7" and shipping for $29 total. Now that's fair pricing!

So far I can't stop listening to monomania. Pensacola especially

Amber Webber and Joshua Wells from the band Black Mountain. It's like...electronic folk magic! I'm in love with their second album, Infinite Light. First one is great too.

I like the new daft punk album but if I were Matt Mondanile I would look into some kind of copyright lawsuit...not sure how all that works and I know Daft Punk has been working on this album a long time but I can't get over how similar these songs are and how much $ is being made off of Get Lucky right now. Probably out of my element but just wanted to post this.
Also, Sax Solo > Pharrell
Get Lucky - Daft Punk Feat. Pharrell Williams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBJ9RnbK8G4#ws)
Ducktails - Under Cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzRp4rL9Hds#ws)
The National - Trouble Will Find Me
Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City
Phosphorescent - Muchacho
Kurt Vile - Walkin On A Pretty Daze
Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse
Mikal Cronin - MCII
Local Natives - Hummingbird
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II
Yo La Tengo - Fade
The Men - New Moon
Deerhunter - Momomania
Torres - Torres
Daughter - If You Leave
Lamb Lamb the Beekeeper - Riley Pine
Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt
- need to listen to Portugal the man, Savages, Queens of Stone Age, Shannon and The Clams and others some more. Been a great year for music
I just got that Magna Carta Holy Grail. It's a good cd and you can listen to it from beginning to end. The Rick Ross track might be the only skippable one. They made the original Maybach Music then have the nerve to put out that trash. "Oceans" and "Part II" are the best along with "Jay Z Blue." Definitely makes up for Blueprint 3.
JAGWAR MA- HOWLIN
CAYUCAS- BIG FOOT
FLAMING LIPS- THE TERROR
WILD NOTHING- EMPTY ESTATE
DUCKTAILS- THE FLOWER LANE
the new Gregory Alan Isakov album The Weatherman is just beautiful.
Awesome:
Local Natives - Hummingbird
Foals - Holy Fire
Jim James - Regions
Very good:
Junip - Junip
Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Specter at the Feast
Atoms for Peace - AMOK
The Joy Formidable - Wolf's Law
Upcoming:
Pearl Jam
Radical Face
A couple recent releases I'm enjoying:
Wild Feathers
Pond- Hobo Rocket
I haven't listened to much this year, haven't even heard a great rocker yet (recommendations?). I've really liked these though:
Patty Griffin - American Kid
Charles Bradley - Victim of Love
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Really loving Valerie June's debut release, Pushin Against a Stone
Check it out if you're not familiar.

I listened to the stuff on NPR today- like it! She's getting so much buzz I heard she was the only artist already booked for the Newport FF next year.
I know I've mentioned these already, but on my trip last week I became really into the Jason Isbell and obsessed with P.tM - Evil Friends. Its as good as TSS or ITMITC, in my opinion.

I'm still listening to Evil Friends myself. Sometimes I love an album from first listen, but then tire quickly of it. This album is not one of them. Other times An album is a grower; once again not this album. I fell in love on first listen and it is right up there for me in my current rotation of regulars.

That's one of the things I like about it too. It makes it seem so interconnected, almost like a symphonic piece-Different movements that come back to the same themes
Jason Isbell - Southeastern - finally gave this the time it deserved. Definetly a top 5 album of the year for me. It's a classic an probably my favorite alt country / singer song writer album sense heartbreaker.
Ola Podrida - Ghosts Go Blind - not sure if he has been mentioned but could be in my final top 10 as well. Rdio compares it to phosphorescent
Lone Bellow - s/t - beautiful harmonies. Nice alt folk pop album superior to more commercially succesful acts like Mumford and lumineers
Portugal. The man - also love the lyrical themes through out and it's also just damn fun listening
Night beds - more indie folk. Dude has an amazing voice
QOTSA ...Like Clockwork has been on heavy rotation lately for me.
adding NIN to my list, solid album. Only listened to it once though.
Jagwar Ma- Howlin
Went to the record store looking for a particular album, Hanni El Khatib, but they didn't have it. I then was chatting with the owner and he mentioned this band. Played a song from them, i liked it and bought the album. Pretty decent.
1. Wolf People - Fain
2. Futurebirds - Baba Yaga
3. Jason Isbell - Southeastern
4. Carcass - Surgical Steel
5. Arbouretum - Coming Out of the Fog
6. Phosphorescent - Muchacho
Good list, 5 of those are in my top 10-15 of the year and Baba Yaga remains my #1. Haven't heard Carcass, whats that like? Metal?

Yes! I've only listened to the new Nine Inch Nails album once as well, but I loved it on first listen. Pretty sure it is my favorite of theirs since The Fragile.
I listened to Laura Veirs' album this morning, and it's fantastic. It has a little Neko and Kathleen Edwards.

Ha! Yeah Carcass would fall into the melodic death metal/gore grind category I guess. Metal categories crack me up. It is an amazing album though and may climb the list.
I have to add Qwel and Maker's Beautiful Raw. This is my favorite hip hop album since Cool Calm Pete's Lost in 2005.

Really! Before I'd ever heard of them I saw them open for Band of Horses(!) at Cain's in 2010, and thought they were great. I've been nuts about them ever since and would love to see them again.
Fully, get some glasses. Anyway, what's wrong with Barenaked Ladies?
While I don't disagree with anyone, I'm adding Obits as the greatest band I've never heard until this year.
Third album came out in 2013 - Bed and Bugs
Obits - Taste The Diff (not the video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpXFnHzYFyE#ws)

The Besnard Lakes record is high up on my list of things I need to hear. Loved the last one, though I'm not real impressed with them as a live band.
Really! Before I'd ever heard of them I saw them open for Band of Horses(!) at Cain's in 2010, and thought they were great. I've been nuts about them ever since and would love to see them again.
Fully, get some glasses. Anyway, what's wrong with Barenaked Ladies?
While I totally get that you like bareneckid ladies, The Barenaked Ladies are responsible for parts of the Shrek Soundtrack which my kids played more than a pop radio station plays a Katy Perry song. My skin crawls thinking about that song on repeat.

It's quite good, isn't it? Pretty sure it'll be in my top ten this year, and it's been a very good year.
Thanks to crispy, ruckus, and fully, I have to add Wolf People - Fain to the list. This band is insane. And great. I wish I would've been less lazy on Sunday and gone to Bloomington to check them out.

Put Ruckus at the top of that list. And you were just being lazy?! Okay then, I will taunt you with the knowledge that you missed seeing one hell of an amazing group and meeting some extremely nice guys. Sunday night shows are tough to do though, I understand.

That's a cool list, GO4IT, and I'm happy to see that I've actually heard one of those, Speck Mountain, thanks to Rich, I believe. And Mr. Cale obviously did not make The Revue's cut, else he would have been listed before Clutch.
You'll have to wait and see if Zachary Cale made it since we're doing this alphabetically by band name and first name (just easier that way). Glad to hear that you enjoyed the album, though, GO4IT.

Agreed about the Windhand record. 2013 has been an incredible year for metal releases, probably the best year ever since I've been paying attention.
Come join us in the metal thread, Wolof7, its gets a little lonely in there sometimes.
For me there was one great complete album of the year which stood out above the rest
QOTSA
Then a lot of solid albums including
Murray Lightburn
Deer Tick
J Roddy
Lord Dying
JJ
Red Fang
Black Tusk
A few that I have enjoyed what I have heard, but haven't listened to the entire album
Lady Lamb
Sound City: Real To Reel
Black Sabbath
