I listened to it a bunch of times now and it certainly lives up the hype. Just a really beautiful record. This guy is such a mastermind in the studio

saw where the writer of that Grantland article (Steven Hyden) mentioned that someone on his twitter feed say they hear some Dire Straits in this album.  Can't say they are wrong especially on An Ocean In Between the Waves

Totally Dire Straits.  And sometimes Bob Dylan sitting in with Dire Straits.

Listened to the first half of this record and I'm really diggin' it. Some great guitar sounds that really build as the songs go on. I really wanna see what this sounds like live. I picked up some tickets for a show in a few weeks, but have no idea what to expect. Has anyone seen any shows recently? What's this touring band looking like?

Thanks for bringing this band to my attention.  I listned to them due to these glowing reviews.  Definitely two thumbs up!  I barely scratched the surface of their stuff, but I'm digging it.  I see they're coming to DC so I should be able to catch them in April.

Based on their name, I didin't think they would sound at all like the way that they do.

Wow.

I gotta say I was pretty skeptical going into this, just how they would translate all that studio magic into a live show, but they. fucking. killed.
There's 6 of em on stage, with 5 guys forming a sort of semi circle behind Adam who was front and center the whole show. Theres at least 2 guitars going at all times, sometimes an acoustic one, one guy in particular playing anything from a sax, trumpet, keyboards, or lap slide guitar. Everyone besides the drummer has some sort of synth set up in front of em and are turning knobs and shit. While it sounds like a shitshow, it just all came together beautifully.
They played every song off the new album. And for a record in which apparently every inch of every note was placed there specifically by Adam, it was so awesome to see these songs explode and twist and turn. The guy just fucking shreds and everyone in the band is obviously an enormous musician. I swear I thought a mosh pit was gonna break out when they started Baby Missiles, and that was only 3 songs in.
I always read about New York crowds being lame and 'too cool', but I think we get a bad wrap. People were definitely into it, dancing, bobbing, jumping around like idiots. Great fucking show and I was so happy to see a band whose albums I love, just kill it live.

This is what I love about this forum, finding great new music.  Over the last couple years I've been turned on to some good stuff (Phosphorescent, Kurt Vile, Jason Isbell) and other times I listen to the suggestions because I respect what you've recommended in the past, but it doesn't catch on for me (Beck).  This one is a home run for me.  I listened to it on Spotify on repeat for two days and bought the album today at my local record store.
It's fantastic, and it's probably something I never would have heard if it wasn't for this forum, so thanks everyone!

Thanks JY!  Both shows in SF are sold out and the $15 tickets are going for $80 on craigslist.   I'm almost considering it....next time they'll be in a much bigger venue.

I finally got my vinyl copy, played the first record, which sounded great, and then I get to side three and it sounds like my turntable's motor is going wonky -- I take a look, and the tonearm is weaving back and forth because the record was pressed off-center! And it's just side 3, side 4 is fine, but still, I'll be returning it and getting a new one. BOOOO!

I've been wondering if others wouldn't be affected, like is that something that can happens as a fluke to a single record? I would think it was a registration issue that would cause the whole batch to be off center, but I'm not exactly clear on the process.

Don't forget to switch to 45 rpm when you put on Slave Ambient -- the guys who just featured The War on Drugs on their vinyl show on our local public radio did that when they played Your Love Is Calling My Name, and they didn't realize it until the vocals came in.

- Lost in the Dream (hear so much tom petty in this one)

I couldn't hold out until the 9:30 Club show to buy the vinyl so I pulled the trigger last night on Amazon - nice thing is that you get the MP3s right away to keep you going until the real goods arrive.  If this is a good pressing, it is going to be an amazing album on vinyl.

Haha!  Yeah I noticed right before I dropped the needle.  Annoying on my table because you have to take the platter off and move the belt...whine, whine.  Lost in the Dream was a flawless copy.  Slave Ambient had an incorrect label on it and a few smudges that won't wipe off, but don't seem to affect playback.  Not sure if I'm going to ask for another copy or not.  I mean I can just write "Side A" on the copy with the bad label...LP1 had two side B labels...still undecided.  Would any of you ask for a new copy or just let it be?

The Lost in the Dream vinyl arrived midweek but I waited until tonight to do it up right.  Had to keep in under control while guests were around but now that they are gone and Ms GO4IT has gone upstairs to bed I'm going through it again properly at FULL volume.
This album was meant for vinyl and I seem to have received a very decent pressing.
Very nice.

Oh baby! Just got back from my first live War On Drugs experience... WHOA!

The venue's power went out before the show, casting doubt that the show could even go on. Thankfully, it did, but when I saw Adam's guitar setup, it became all too clear why the power went out -- the dude is running four amps! And a pedalboard longer than a submarine. But OH BABY what a sound he gets out of it! I've never seen such a surgical guitar player. Musical incision after musical incision, all in impressively precise fashion.

His band is full of stealth all-stars too. Everyone was doing something very unique and I found myself getting lost in each of their parts -- I guess that's a reflection of how amazingly textured these songs are.

I really loved the drawn-out feedback jams. Cleared out the crowd nicely, and a feedback jam always puts a smile on my face. When you've got that much equipment, why WOULDN'T you!?

Great band, great show! Here is a clip of "An Ocean In Between The Waves":

Expectations are rising for Friday night in D.C.  I hope to add another stellar review.  I am fired up to see this band!
We're headed to the 9:30 Club tomorrow (Fri) as well to meet up with APR.  Anyone else going?  I'm really looking forward to this.

Show at the Bowery is easily going to be in the top 3 shows I see this year, if not THE best. I just got tickets to see them in Brooklyn in June, so we'll see if they can top it.

Had a great time at the show last night with APR, his friend, Ms GO4IT and Bren.  We had center balcony rail above the soundboard - great sound there.  They played for 2 1/2 glorious hours ending with a killer Mind Games at 1AM.

Here's my video of Red Eyes into Suffering. Enjoy :cheesy:

At 2.5 hours, that was the longest show I've ever seen at the 9:30.  And it was great.

Center balcony next to GO4IT, who as usual captured some great footage (see above).   Adam, the lead singer/guitarist, is an incredible guitar player.  I really liked his solos, and there were quite a few of them.  I must admit, I did get a little bored by their slower stuff as I do when listening to their albums.  But the livlier songs more than made up for it and sounded stellar and longer than the album versions......Under the Pressure (amazing song and perfect opener), An Ocean in Between, In Reverse, and Brothers stood out.

The band had a bunch of relatives there so maybe that was why they played so much.  I had a blast and will be there again next time they come around.

same here on both points.  if they tour like they did for Slave Ambient, we could see another US tour after they get back from Europe.

Good to know!

The War on Drugs don't have that Roots Picnic listed on their tour page.  They do have Brooklyn listed June 13.  Maybe they'll add a few shows in the Mid Atlantic around those dates.  That would be nice.

It's been over a month now and this album hasn't left my CD player for more than a day. I listen to it basically daily and it has only gotten better. A near perfect album that has to be one of my favorites of the past 10 years. I know that is some strong praise, but I really think it's warranted. That is all...

As someone else here mentioned, I've discovered some great bands, thanks to this board.  Im listening to Lost In The Dream for the first time, and I'm loving it so far.  Right now, Im on Suffering.  Im getting a kind of Pink Floyd vibe.  Im looking forward to hearing the rest of this album, and  getting their previous ones.  :drum:

I just found out they'll be playing The Fonda in October.  I definitely will get a ticket!  If they're available.

They killed it in Los Angeles on Friday night at the Fonda Theater.  It was our second time seeing them, both times on this tour.  The venue was packed and they brought it hard.  They sound like what 80s rock could have been if the songwriting had more substance and emotional depth and the bands had not turned their backs on long guitar solos and jamming. Its an awesome hybrid of 70s and 80s rock. Trance-inducing repetitive rhythms awash in a sheen of synthy keyboards over the top of solid songwriting, passionate vocals and tight ensemble playing. They'll spend four or five minutes in a dreamy low key ambient space and then suddenly explode into a higher gear and commence to rocking out but with a dance club sound. I love this band so much!

Anybody going to the show tonight at the Fillmore? Mark Kozelek might join him on stage to perform "War On Drugs: Suck My Cock/Sun Kil Moon: Go Fuck Yourself."Either way, the song is set to stream on Sun Kil Moon's website tonight.  Should be a gas if he shows up (or if he doesn't for that matter).

I've definitely jumped on the War on Drugs bandwagon and am not big fan of Sun Kil Moon's music. I understand why people like it, but I find it too monotonous in both lyrical style and musical content. That being said, I've actually enjoyed reading about the WOD/SKM beef. It seems intentionally Dylan-esque, and it's definitely a ploy to get attention. He is being a classless a-hole, who is trolling by writing a sophomoric song, but that's the point.  Kozelek was clear that it's not personal and it's a reaction to folks getting bent out of shape about his stage banter. I was hoping that he would show up last night (I wasn't there, but I assume he didn't). I also respect the War on Drugs for not engaging and letting it run its course. I don't know, maybe I just watched too much WWF as a kid.

That's a good take on this. I LOVE Kozelek's work (though not so much his recent stuff), but the guy is coming across as a real asshole when he's mostly joking -- and his jokes are falling flat because of the meanness he's injecting. He needs to get a grip and shut the fuck up himself.

I love Kozelek as a singer song writer.  I got into him this year based on the positive rviews for benji, which is an amazing peace of work but is very hard to embrace.  I think his early work as Red House Painter is amazing and a lot of board members would really like it.  Lot more melodies and choruses then later work, more easily accessible.

With that said i think he is joke is too mean spirited and are indeed coming off flat.  If I was
WOD i would say nothing or simple: "I like Sun Kil Moon's Music but Mark's recent behavior reminds me of assholes.  That is not a criticism just an observation."

Here's a review of the Friday night show in Philly with setlist and video links:
http://thekey.xpn.org/2015/03/28/the-war-on-drugs-tower-theater-2/ (http://thekey.xpn.org/2015/03/28/the-war-on-drugs-tower-theater-2/)

We were 5th row near center in the balcony and fortunately arrived in time to get a good seat.  Based on the hundred or so people in the balcony when we arrived at about 7:30, I thought they'd never fill the place which holds about 3,000 (all GA and mostly seated except for a big pit up front for this show) but soon after WOD started at 9 sharp the huge balcony was literally filled to the rafters.

It was a great show to be sure, but did not approach the epic status of the 9:30 Club show last April.  That show, just a month after the release of Lost in the Dream, had a freshness and intensity that wasn't quite there on Friday.  I replayed videos of both shows this morning which just confirmed those impressions.  I chalk it up to the grueling and long tour they've been on and the need to pace themselves.  At the 9:30 Club they played for 2 1/2 hours and on Friday 1 3/4 hours.

I'm looking forward to seeing them at least a couple more times this year, at Governor's Ball and when they return to the 9:30 Club in June.

And British prime minister Cameron and his wife are fans too:

2 1/2 hours?  awesome. how many songs did they play that night?

Packed at the Tower.  Pretty much sit/stand where you wanted to.  floor, seats or balcony.  Band was pretty spot on.  I was on the floor.  Saw two guys wearing MMJ shirts (I had on one as well) so hung out with them.

I just saw WOD at the Georgia Theatre last week in Athens. They were truly magnificent! I'm sure I made some people mad because of how hard I was dancing but damn I couldn't help it.  That guitar, those drums, the baritone sax, all that reverb...so so good!

These guys were awesome when they opened OBH2!  The music just set the right vibe for those 4 lost days of music and sun.

Lost In The Dream and Slave Ambient are great albums.  Definitely a favorite!

We were dancing our asses off right there with ya! We saw a guy in an MMJ shirt and rode the epic dance wave with him. biggest takeaway: I need more baritone sax in my life.

Thank you goldenyim! I thought it was just me with the baritone sax and all the crazy dancing. I saw a guy with an MMJ shirt there too, wonder if it was the same one. We chatted after the show about how he and his girlfriend were able to score MMJ tickets there. My husband and I had no such luck. That show is going to be epic though :)

Another great show and now onto the 9:30 Club in less than two weeks.  I'm lost in the dream.

Saw these guys at Field Trip fest last weekend and WOW! Compared to my first experience seeing them about a year and a half ago, it was like a whole new band. These guys THRIVE on open air. The arrangements have developed, and they sounded loose in the best way possible, like they were actually having fun, instead of their brand of surgically precise rock like when I saw them previously.

And now I see they've signed to Atlantic Records. What a year!!

Great footage!  I can't believe these guys are still touring and will be for most of the rest of the year.  9:30 Club show next weekend.

APR, Ms GO4IT and I were on the 9:30 Club balcony rail just right of center last night.  Great sound up there.  As expected, no 2 1/2 hour show like last year at the Club just after the album dropped, but still a great show at just over 1 1/2 hours.  Nice surprise at the end when they covered Sharon Van Etten's One Day.  Beautiful song.

Well there is proof they "covered" their closing song last night in the past with a special guest.

you've now seen War on Drugs play One Day as many times as I've seen Sharon play it
