SO MANY FESTIVALS...........SO LITTLE TIME/MONIES.

I missed out on Coachella tickets and was going to hit up New Orleans instead that same weekend to see another one of my favorite bands............BUT this is lookin' most excellent.

I wish MMJ played the West more!

YES. I'm in on this one. I may wait until the rest of their tour dates come out just in case the boys have a stand-alone show nearby but this lineup is my favorite so far.

Last year Hangout was great (as long as you don't mind commuting to the beach instead of rolling out of your sleeping bag and stumbling up to a stage via foot).

There's a campground about two miles up the beach from where the stages are, and last year they sold a $10 weekend shuttle pass that had a route through the campground. SO no driving necessary

Now I'm wondering how long of a set they will have?? Noise ordinances were an issue last year...

P.S. Last year they had a few late night real personal sets that happened after the festival closed its gates on Friday and Saturday. Keller Williams did one. Could MMJ???

I enjoy festivals and may even go to this since I think I can get VIP for free through a friend. But I want some non festival dates already. How about 2 nights at Red Rocks in August!

Gulf State Park is the one. Not the cheapest camping, but it's reasonable. and the showers are the cleanest camp showers I've ever seen!  :bath:

Hey, whoa, showers!  Hahah there's a first for a fest... (except for one very random time....) Camp on the lake! Now it's starting to feel a little like the Ledges!

Hahah go Tyler! If I could just untangle this huge wad of cash in my pocket, I'd be good to go on a beach-front condo....... man the 50's are just all mangled up in the 100's, what a mess!!!  :P :P :P  Heheh hate when this happens.... not again!  ;)

Nah I like camping!  Man 2 nights at Red Rocks would be glorious!!!!

I'm there! Just phoned a family friend who owns a condo two buildings down from the Hangout. This quaint beach town is lovely and will make a great host for the killer lineup. Sitting on the balcony back in August I never dreamed of coming back for the Jacket!!!!

I was all over this until I realized one of my friends and my sis in law are getting married that day.   MMJ on the beach?  Are you kidding me?   Oh well, at least I didn't have to stress about how I was going to pull it off.    I guess I'm back to Wakarusa as a leading candidate.

I feel your pain.  I'm less than 30 minutes from this festival but I'm going to have a three week old at home.  No way I can make it for the whole weekend.  Feeling pretty good about my chances for making it on MMJ day, though!

I echo that.. $154 presale ticket for a 3 day festival AND $166 for a condo on the beach!? This really is a dream come true!

If anyone is looking for a VERY close and affordable rental check out http://regattarentals.com/ (http://regattarentals.com/)

The Regatta and Castaways units are literally next door to the stages.

When booking with a property owner I questioned the sound ordnance issues. She chalked it up to a learning curve for the locals. Being the first year they were not prepared for the type of music on offer. Word around the community is if you don't like it leave! All the retirees/snowbirds are planning a mass exodus to cash in and accommodate all the "kids" coming to town.

Noo need for alarm! Last year, like toretm said, being the first year, people didn't know what to expect. The condos around the Hangout are literally on top of the stages, so they shut the shows down at a reasonable hour (when i was at grace potter there were just as many ppl jammin on the balcony as there were in front of the stage almost).

SO things couldn't go until four in the AM like some other wilderness-based festivals. I must say they gave the headliners very reasonable time slots given the area that it's in. And the shows were plenty loud

Judging by the poster though, MMJ isn't a headliner right?? As long as I get two hours I'm happy as a pig in poopoo (and why the &%$# would foo fighters headline over MMJ in the 1st place?? sheesh...).

based on the speculation time slots that were posted on the inforoo boards (some of the major artists have announced what day and time they're playing on facebook/twitter.. MMJ has not) it would appear as if My Morning Jacket will go on for 1 hour and 45 minutes Saturday or Sunday night on the main stage right behind the Foo Fighters or Paul Simon who will go on to play a 2.5 hour set.

Here's what all they've dug up so far:

Friday
WSP, 8PM (website)
Bassnectar (website)
Slightly Stoopid (Website)
Medeski Martin & Wood (Website)

Saturday
Foo Fighters (Website)
Primus (FB)
Pretty Lights (Website)
Umphrey's McGee (pollstar)
Johnathan Tyler & Northern Lights (Pollstar)

Sunday
Paul Simon (process of elimination)
Ween (FB)
Drive By Truckers (FB... but the post was removed)
Old Crow Medicine Show, 7pm (FB)
Amos Lee, 3pm (FB)
Xavier Rudd (website)
Galactic (Website)
Michael Franti & Spearhead (website)
Trombone Shorty (other tourdates fri & Sat)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an impromptu late night surprise set by our boys though. It seemed as if those were happening left and right during the festival last year.

Nice, Tyler.

5 stages?

P.S. I can't stop thinking about being on the beach with you fine folks, listening to My Morning Jacket, and just smiling from ear to ear.

As the date gets closer we'll need to round up a list of all the forum people who will be there and plan a meet up.

Ohhh, me too! The more I think about it, as nice as a long open-ended set would be, the atmosphere at this one will be what makes the times timeless.

Is this the first Jacket show ever played on a beach? Will we witness history? Will Jim go it barefoot like the olden days? Will all of the gulf coast sand be melted into one shimmering sheet of glass beneath our feet?!

And Tyler, I think you're on the money about the set time, but how did you extrapolate that number? If it plays out like last year, they have two stages facing each other on the beach: the main one and another big one.

I think the boys will get to play the main stage either before paulie simone or the fooey fighters. (How could Paul Simon fill 2.5 hrs?? I've never seen him live, but dang....)

"This year's Hangout Music Festival, which takes place on May 20-22, will feature headlining sets by Paul Simon, Foo Fighters, Widespread Panic, the Black Keys and My Morning Jacket."

This is from the spinner site. I think we will get a pretty decent set as far as time goes. Especially since they are being considered a headliner

Very impressive return. Good karma, perhaps....

"Last year was also an awkward inauguration as the festival temporarily rebranded itself, at the last minute, as the Concert for the Coast, generously donating 100 percent of the profits to Gulf Coast relief, following that massive oil spill that had the entire country up in arms at the time."

well he has a new album and he's written about 4 million songs lol..so I don't think it would be too hard for him to fill that time.  I think he'd make a great end of the festival kind of wind down set.  I hope he plays on Sunday.

i got a crew going down.  havnt pulled the trigger yet, but its a done deal.  probably about 15-20 people.

trigger pulled, tickets bought, duplex booked.  weve got both sides of a great duplex with our own pool.  1.7 miles from the venue.  we will burn that place down.  looks like about 25 of us.

Holy &%$@ this show's gonna get rowdy  :D!!! The sheer number of forum-related peeps is going to fill up the entire pit!!!

100 days and counting....I already have my sunscreen by the door.

I think it would helpful/awesome for people to post flying in/out times so people can hook up for rides, etc. (if people are renting cars and flying into the same airports, no reason not to share)...just a thought---3 or 4 diff airports around that vicinity...

Yes, this must be discussed.  Details, details, details.  As of now, we are just sort of waiting for a schedule to surface.  Does anyone have info on that?  Our goal is to leave on Sunday night, but if they don't play til Sunday, we are definitely going to bump it to Monday.
We have been looking at flights, and looks like Pensacola Fla is the closer airport.

Crispy....if you don't want to crash at the Trish and Bob love nest you should check with darkglow and see how many people are signed up for the condo he booked. Just throwing it out there. We all know they're both kinda crazy...and maybe they don't have enough room in the bathtub...

I'm the lone Jacketeer with the rest of my crew WSP fanatics. At the moment we are waiting for two others, but no one has financially committed.  That being said we might have space for two- Thurs-Sun rental is .03 miles/ 5min walk to the Hangout.

Since I am on the losing end of a battle against irony, I am probably not going to be able to make any of this festival.   :'(   But, in the name of Southern Hospitality and Jacket Love, I'm thinking I might be able to arrange one or two shuttle trips from the Pensacola airport to Gulf Shores.  As it gets closer to time and there are people flying in without rides maybe we can coordinate a time for me to pick up some peeps and carry em on over.  Just an option to keep in mind.

P.S.  This offer is extended to the band, as well.   ;D ;D ;D

Did any of you more seasoned folks attend the 2003 tour when MMJ opened for the Foo Fighters?

I've recently begun digging into the other bands that will be at the Hangout, and I came across an article that said Dave Grohl loved At Dawn when it first came out.

Any chance or history of on-stage collaboration??

Still up in the air about doing this festival (I have only done small stuff like Newport which is accessible and awesome!) I can only take one day off (Monday) so I would probably come in on Saturday? Sunday is my  :birthdays: and MMJ is playing... this makes me want to go!!! My real apprehension is that I'm not sure if I can handle the big festivals ~ dealing with the crowds and the other bands fans. Holding a spot at T5 all night is one thing, holding a spot all day and night at a big festival, man....

If money was an issue for anyone in the decision-making process, Hangout is offering a 3 "easy payments" plan starting Feb. 18th.

"Scheduling for Payment:
Deposit (at time of purchase) – 34% of ticket price plus shipping and handling charges
Payment 2 (April 1, 2011) – 33% of ticket price
Payment 3 (May 1, 2011) – final 33% of ticket price"

Awesome interview with the festie visionary and head-honcho, AJ Niland. Looks like this one is going to be 10x better than last year (and last year was one of the best festival experiences I've had  :D) Check it out:

"AJ: There's gonna be a lagoon, Hammock Beach, some new trees. We may be able to add a pool. Ferris wheel is coming back. For the late night sets, our new tent is going to be air-conditioned...There's also a sky-bar, which will be 30 feet in the air where people can enjoy a nice panoramic view of their surroundings....It's the environment. It's the beach. It's not something that we could create. I can't even come close to taking the credit for that because it has nothing to do with us.... I really think there is this amazing spirit that injects itself into the experience."

If there's a tent for late night sets, that means bigger acts could do late night, post-festival gigs.....just sayin'  ??? last year all they had was the intimate Hangout restaurant/venue for late night shows.

Hey, sorry pots we are flying in Thurs afternoon!  Where r u guys staying??? We are at the lighthouse.

If you guys need a ride, I'd like to help out.  I know it's kind of weird and all not knowing any of you so I don't want to press the issue, but I can hustle some of you down on the afternoons.  I'm super bummed I'm going to miss this, but unless they do single day tickets (which is doubtful with this lineup), I'm just not going to be able to make it this year.  I'm going to have a three week old and that's just too young for us to leave for the weekend.  So the next best thing is helping out and kind or rocking out vicariously (and pimping my hometown  8)).  I'm thinking I can make a trip form PNS to Gulf Shores on Wed and Thurs afternoon.  I'm not going to be able to help getting back whenever you all decide to leave.   I would not recommend renting a car because really once you're there, there is nowhere else to go that you can't walk to.  Gulf Shores is basically one road.  If you do end up taking a cab from the Pensacola airport, it'll probably run around $60-$75 one way.

Jon T, this is so nice of you! Such southern hospitality!  It will be me, 8bobbyb, and miss pennylane arriving together on Thursday at 3:30pm. We were thinking of renting a car, but now might reconsider based on your advice.  Since we are in condos, I figured a big  food shop would be in order first thing, so we would need wheels for that, no?
I do hope that you will be able to see the band!!! Thanks again!
Title: Re: Hangout Festival
Post by: Jon T. on Feb 27, 2011, 09:00 AM
No problem!  I'd be glad to help.  If money isn't an issue, then having your own car is obviously your best bet. But, other than getting there and leaving,  I would just think that it will literally sit in the same spot all weekend.  I am not too familiar with Gulf Shores so I don't know where a grocery store is. It would probably 4ish before I could get out there but I would be happy to swing you guys by a store on the way, if you needed.  Let me know if I can help!

Trish don't worry about renting a car for gulf shores. I will have my car as will my mom at the condo. I'm sure we'll have to make a supply run or two. Also real cool of ya jon to offer to do that. I would be game for helpin out too but I will be having lots of visitors comin down earlier in the week and it's too hard to predict what will be goin on. A collaboration between Cee-Lo and the Jacket brethren doing somethin' suave like Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield would be unbeatable. There was lots of collaborating going on last year so maybe there's hope!!

The anticipation and wonder about the Hangout setlist is great. First show after the new album is released (hopefully)? Rare old nugs might be scarce this summer, but the beach might bring some great covers. This could be a really special show, but regaurdless I'm gettin itchy for Jacket summer '11 to start at Hangout. I was all against an "urban" festival, but Im getting psyched that my ladies sister convinced me to go. Finished paying her for my ticket/condo this morning, so its official!

Has anyone heard or posted what night MMJ are playing?

Friday night.

The Flaming Lips are playing Saturday and the Black Keys are playing Sunday so MMJ will most likely play Friday.  Unless Hangout has a big trick up their sleeve, those 3 are the bands that will close the 2nd stage each day.

Interesting.....from where does this info come, just out of curiosity (not mistrust  ;)) ?

And by second stage do you mean main stage???

I personally would love to see the Flaming Lips close the festival. Go out with a bang, with out it being the biggest bang. (jacket.)

not sure where dude got his info but the black keys website says they are playing on sunday and the lips site says they are playing saturday. I know there are gonna be 5 stages this year so I am sure the second stage thing is pretty accurate. not the main stage which will have simon, foo fighters, and panic closing each night.

Another cool interview with the festival founder/organizer AJ Niland! I'm liking this dude more and more as I read about him. I definitely think we're in good hands

It's kinda long, so to sum up the new stuff: he said the late night tent will be 3,000 capacity and that shows in there will go "till the wee hours of the morn."

He also claims that single day passes may not be sold at all this year due to the demand for 3-day passes. FINALLY, he also said a string band from New Orleans will be added in the next round of artist additions amongst others....wonder who that could be??

73 days and counting!!  :D :D

That's what happened last year for the few that were featured. Keller Williams, for example, did a set, and Matisyahu stepped in to play with him.

I don't really know what to expect though because the whole late night scene is pretty much a new thing for the festival. The late nighters last year were last minute improvisatory after thoughts on behalf of the planners.

I forget if I mentioned this or not so I'll say it again: My radio show in college was "I Sold My Soul for David Grohl" where the whole point was to get him to call in to my radio show so I could give him an award for being "the man".  It was going quite well until I got booted from school

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I might try to make this festival happen for me. I can't stop thinking about it.

What's the closest aiport? The site mentions the Mobile Regional Airport first, so I thought that might be the closest...but a lot of people seem to be flying in from Pensacola. Any advice?

We are flying from Jersey into Pensacola. Seemed like more flights were available into there for us.  From my understanding, we are about 30 mins from Gulf Shores.

You'll probably get better rates to P'Cola and you'll also get the pleasure of visiting the finest place on Earth.  If you don't mind a little drive (3 to 4 hours) - I know that Southwest flies to Birmingham and that new airport by Panama City.  Flight prices seem to be sooooo much better if Southwest offers service.

Just booked a place a mile away from the stages after days of looking for something reasonable.  There really aren't a lot places available that are close.  Anyway, anyone that was there last year, what can we expect?  When do the tunes usually get cranking during the day?

Make arrangements to rent a beach cruiser for the weekend and that mile will be nothing.  Plus, there are few things more enjoyable than riding bikes on the beach.
side note:  you may also want to invest in a bike lock...

could this mean we'll see him go out with panic during their set at hangout fest????

i think it's a good possibility!

based on the speculation time slots that were posted on the inforoo boards (some of the major artists have announced what day and time they're playing on facebook/twitter.. MMJ has not) it would appear as if My Morning Jacket will go on for 1 hour and 45 minutes Saturday or Sunday night on the main stage right behind the Foo Fighters or Paul Simon who will go on to play a 2.5 hour set.

Here's what all they've dug up so far:

Friday
WSP, 8PM (website)
Bassnectar (website)
Slightly Stoopid (Website)
Medeski Martin & Wood (Website)

Saturday
Foo Fighters (Website)
Primus (FB)
Pretty Lights (Website)
Umphrey's McGee (pollstar)
Johnathan Tyler & Northern Lights (Pollstar)

Sunday
Paul Simon (process of elimination)
Ween (FB)
Drive By Truckers (FB... but the post was removed)
Old Crow Medicine Show, 7pm (FB)
Amos Lee, 3pm (FB)
Xavier Rudd (website)
Galactic (Website)
Michael Franti & Spearhead (website)
Trombone Shorty (other tourdates fri & Sat)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an impromptu late night surprise set by our boys though. It seemed as if those were happening left and right during the festival last year.

my speculation for the schedule

Friday Night MMJ ---> Widespread Panic... Late night: Bassnectar (Day: MMW, Warren Haynes Band, Slightly Stoopid)
Saturday Night Flaming Lips ----> Foo Fighters.. Late night: Umphrey's McGee (Day: DBT, Xavier Rudd, Ween, Civil Twilight, Dead Confederate)
Sunday Afternoon/Night Amos Lee ---> Black Keys -----> Paul Simon

there are still alot of unknowns at this point

Do you know which song he sat in on? That'd be so nice if Jim appeared, maybe with a lil trombone shorty added in to top things out nicely? Maybe some cortez the killer....mmm

I've been listening to sooooo much Paul Simon lately. Can't wait to be there. And as far as all the speculating, I think we should just go ahead and say Yim should play with every other band on the lineup. Could you imagine Paul Simon/Yim playing "Golden" together? My brain would assplode all over the beach.

i think the stage setup will make it possible.. there are two near equally sized stages facing each other on the beach.. those are the main two stages i believe.. if mmj could play their set and then the headliner for the night starts up right behind them after it's over

That's definitely possible. I really hope that MMJ gets to close out the smaller main stage  instead of the big stage before the closing act though. That would give them a less constricted set.

Last year the Roots and Allison Krauss got to play seemingly longer on the smaller main stage than the others who played on the same stage as the closers.

Judging by the "Circuital Appearing Live!" sub-header on the homepage, I can't wait to hopefully get a set with the whole album played through and through!! Either stage would give them plenty time for that  Maybe they'll fill the time remaining with beach-themed covers  8)

Hangout owner Shaul Zislin said Tuesday that he hoped the issue could be resolved, and added that bands play until 10 p.m. on the establishment's main stage, then move to a smaller stage and play until 2 a.m., Zislin said.
"We feel very strongly that we're in the entertainment district and more liberal guidelines should be allowed in our area," Zislin said. "It's so important for a resort area to provide content for the visitors. Not every vacationer wants to go to sleep. It's their vacation time."

i hope that's not so about the 10pm stop for music on the big stages.. i'm kind of optimistic they'll win the battle on the noise ordnance issue by the time the fest starts

QuoteHere is some additional information that hasn't been posted on the website yet:

The Hangout will host 2 late-night stages Friday and Saturday night of the festival. A 3,000 capacity Hangout Late-Night Tent will host sets by Bassnectar and Pr...etty Lights – who will both perform additional sets during the main Hangout festival event. A second Hangout Late-Night Stage is located within the Hangout Restaurant. All shows begin at midnight.

Performing Friday, May 20th in the Hangout Late Night Tent is Bassnectar with special guest Beats Antique. Tickets are $25 for Hangout Festival ticket buyers, $30 regular price, and $35 day of show.

Performing Saturday, May 21st in the Hangout Late Night Tent is Pretty Lights. Tickets are $25 for Hangout Festival ticket buyers, $30 regular price, and $35 day of show.

Performing Saturday, May 21st on the Hangout Late Night Stage is Tony Clifton and The Katrina Kiss-My-Ass Orchestra. Tickets are $30 for Hangout Festival ticket buyers, $35 regular price, and $40 day of show.

Confirmation of that big tent makes me feel a little better. This means the larger Hangout Late Night Tent set is still unannounced for Saturday.

I get ya (s)allie but we all get the implication.  My thing is, hey we all say dumb shit in the confines of our own social groups that is understood in context by those around us.  I'm sure a number of forum members share that same sentiment written above and that's OK.  It's just that this place is a very civil place that continually avoids the typical trappings of internet message boards because of how awesome the people are.  And I KNOW that the above comment rubbed more than just me the wrong way.  Done and done.

Sheesh Seth!  Ya know I posted it above already right talking bout the Verve Pipe and stuff.  I like it so far as I don't see any major conflicts for me at all.  What do you think about the rest?  For me, only the Lips and Jacket are MUST sees.  After that, I'm pretty flexible though I think Rival Sons and MMW are kinda musts for me.

Looking forward to coming down as well.  I'll be rockin' my frog toboggan with matching Crimson Tide and Tigers gear. ::)

I don't see any major conflicts either! Looks they balanced everything out pretty nicely...my only concern is Warren Haynes band on the same day as MMJ. Warren is one of the few people I've seen more than MMJ, and I was hoping for a Jim/Warren collaboration since he's been doing motowny stuff lately with the new band.

All in all though, those three lineup columns look like dream teams  :D

i wasn't sure if they had updated the link yet with the actual schedule on it. as for me, the lips, keys, and truckers are my only real must-sees besides mmj. i'm pretty much gonna be waiting around all day for the mmj show friday so i can get a spot up close. i figured most of the people that are gonna read this will be beside me.

you better not forget the frog toboggan!! i think i am gonna try and find me one with a shark on it...

I have a condo here also and my friends have canceled!  Need a share to keep it if possible.  Amendites are awsome & includes ticket option for $135 - 3 days. Total rent is $865 19 - 23 and I am solo.  One other person would help.  2-3 would be awesome.   If interested please email me:  freidafrostbite@hotmail.com.

So Motorhead is apparently playing on Saturday.  (Thx for the tip Penny). This might throw a wrench into things depending on when they play.  I'm willing to miss the avetts and Foo Fighters if need be but not the Lips.  I've never seen Motorhead before and they would be a must see for me.

I'm guessing this is going to be a late night show...it has been on their website for a while...but nothing on the Hangout site which makes me think it will be part of their 2nd late night announcements.

Warren's Band is also too close to MMJ set time for me to chance it, but Galactic/Black Keys at the same time really kills me along with Motorhead and Flaming Lips. Time to dust off the old flippin' coin...

Honey Island v. Grace Potter - Honey Island wins
Minus the Bear v. Deac Confederate -Going with Dead Confederate
OCMS v. Truth and Salvage - Prolly Truth and Salvage because I've seen OCMS some times
Lips v. Motorhead v. Rival Sons!? - This one is brutal.  Three bands I desperately wanted to see.  Likely the lips.

And the big one!
DBT v. Lunch Money

ive seen galactic enough times (probably close to a dozen or so over the years), and the keys are just pure power.  for me, they win that battle every single time.

our late nights are going to be up in the air.  this is actually a big group of friends getting together from all over the country for a bachelor/bachelorette party.  not sure how the guests of honor are going to feel about a bunch of people joining in, so we will just have to play this one by ear.

16 days you sexy beasts. Or is it 18? The countdown is screwed up because I fly in on Weds.

(as a side note, I need to get a serious regimen of tanning going on because this pale skin will not fit in on those beautiful shores...)

Excited:

i got a pretty awesome tan goin from the last two weekends of some serious beach time.. spent last weekend at the mullet toss in Orange Beach, AL just down the road from the Hangout and talked to alot of people who told me of the things to expect for the festival. I think it's going to be an unbelievable weekend.. don't want to spoil the surprises

From Hangout's FB page:

"Hangout has now officially sold out of all 3-day festival passes! Single day tickets will not be sold. A limited quantity of tickets are still available to the Thursday night pre-party and the late night shows of Rich Aucoin and Tony Clifton. Thank you to everyone who bought their tickets and are contributing to make Hangout 2011 a complete success! BEACH PARTY!!!"

hope everyone got their tickets!

That's awesome that it sold out! I'm so glad they put a cap on things...

So I was thinking, if I was My Morning Jacket, I would want to hash out at least a few of the new tunes live before doing an internationally broad casted live stream of my album release show.... but alas I am not.

;)   just sayin'   ???

Actually sent an email over there to make sure they let fans know about it. All the artists had a blast, tight show on the beach. got my tickets again, why not.

Here is a video of it, the sun completely sets by the end of the song:
