Cortez the Killer- Neil Young & the Crazy Horse (Fits them perfectly)
In the Flesh - Pink Floyd
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Under Pressure - Queen
Piano Man - Billy Joel
I've been holding out hope for them covering Cortez for years now. Maybe one day...
Young Lust-Pink Floyd
The Lemon Song/Ten Years Gone-Led Zeppelin
Try A Little Tenderness-Otis Redding
In My Room-Beach Boys
Don't Let Me Down/Why Don't We Do It In The Road/Dear Prudence-The Beatles
Go Now-Moody Blues
Sitting In Limbo/They Love Each Other-Jerry Garcia Band
The Message-Grandmaster Flash
ANY 90s R&B would be sensational...I could really see the whole band getting down on R.Kelly's "Bump & Grind"...but maybe "You Remind Me Of My Jeep" would be more ironic...
While I don't know that I'd call it a "dream" cover....but I always thought they'd do a great job with ELO's Telephone Line.
Ten Years Gone would be so awesome!!
Pina Colada Song.
I think Jim's voice would be really well suited to a Van Morrison song or definitely Neil.
I think I would lift off like a fucking rocket if they ever did
Many Rivers To Cross- Jimmy Cliff
You Make Loving Fun- Fleetwood Mac
I had a dream last night that Neil Young was covering Masterplan.

Graham Nash - I Used To Be A King
Jim's voice will be perfect for it.
Pink Floyd - Fearless
Hall & Oates - Rich Girl
Rolling Stones - No Expectations (Carl on slide would be otherwordly)
Beatles - While My guitar Gently Weeps
Fearless would e epic.
Caught myself singing along to supertramps "bloody well right" the other day - very random but the arrangement would fit perfectly
Dave Mason "World in Changes", from 1970, sounds like a My Morning Jacket song. Not only does Dave "channel" Jim in acoustic guitar and some very Yimmy vocals, but it would give Bo a chance to really let loose with some 70's type organ that takes front and center. Bo usually just blends in with the mix, with bubbling restrained keyboards. I love the tears of a clown choice and the I think it would be fun to see Jim sing any elo song... And I don't know if anyone caught it last night on jimmy Fallon, but before one of the commercials, caught a glimpse of Keith sweat's nobody!!! Haha! Not a dream cover but still awesome as shit!!!

Random but Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin, with the Boston Pops again. Jim's voice on "and I love you" would boom... I never listen to MB but this just stands out for his voice and spirit! oh and any Dead song would blow me away or JGB :cheesy:

Fearlessly the idiot faces the crowd....smiling.
Also - how's about Jeff buckley's Last Goodbye? Take a listen and imagine Carl on steel guitar instead of the violin backing. Tommy would be slamming the bass and Jim soulfully crooning about impending loss.
And for disco freaky fun, how about Emotional Rescue by the Stones? Horns for Carl, killer backbeat for Patrick and tailor made falsetto for Jim....

Bob Dylan - Nobody Cept' You

Living Colour's CULT OF PERSONALITY
Living Colour - Cult Of Personality (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xxgRUyzgs0#)
When looking for a good cover for MMJ, there are a couple of criteria. The strengths of the band are several and they start with Jim's voice. This song has a powerful chorus and the chance for Jim to really belt it out.
Second, this is a 2 guitar band with a lot of energy and rocking style. This song also provides that opportunity with a blazing solo by Vernon Reid. I'd like to see what Carl could do with that solo.
Third, MMJ is a high energy band with great stage presence. I can just see Jim running around stage flinging his hair around the way Corey Glover does in the original.
Finally, as I found out thanks to very knowledgeable poster in a thread I started about Black Metal, MMJ employs the use of loops uniquely. Bo could mix in the historical quotes, or they could find other ones they wanted and mix it up.
I really think this is the perfect cover for them and I think younger folks need to be reminded what an awesome band Living Colour was. I hope they play this song!!!
Pat Benatar- Invincible
Tears for Fears- Head Over Heels
Depeche Mode - World in My Eyes
Electric Avenue
anything of Paul Simons Graceland
I have said this before but I think Pink Floyd's "Fearless" would be perfect for MMJ. The vocals are perfect for Jim and are suited for heavy reverb, Also, the lyrics are amazing and are once again perfect for Jim.

Yeah, I think a lot of Pink Floyd songs would be good as well. Especially for Jim's solo tour. He layers sound so well on that tour.
Many songs from Talking Heads would fall into this category too.
LOL! Dave Letterman's band was playing Cult of Personality last night as they came back fro Jim's performance.

I know they already cover a Velvet Undergound song (o'sweet nothin), but I'd really love to hear MMJ give a try at Sweet Jane off the same album.
But I'd like them to play it the way the Cowboy Junkies did - especially that melodic singing part at the end. I'd love to hear Jim do that.

Although that is certainly the spirit of the original recording, I think Jim James could handle that noise sufficiently. With some additional voices backing him he would sound different from the recording, but equally majestic.

I would love MMJ to cover Warren Zevon at some point.....can you imagine Jim singing Werewolves of London although I am not sure if he would choose that song by Warren but more of lesser known song

Huge fan of Warren as well. Excitable Boy is in regular rotation at our house. Two Tone could destroy the bass lines in 'Nighttime it the Switching Yard'.

Wow Waddy - what a great song that would be for them to cover. And hey... the name of their band is great too. "Hey it's a beautiful day". My neighbor actually has the album and played it for me a while back
caught myself signing along with Jackson Brown's Loadout>Stay in the car yesterday....and then it occurred to me that MMJ would have perfect arrangements....
imagine Bo playing piano solo and singing intro (YES - BO SINGING!), and then Jim taking falsetto chorus in Stay.....Carl wailing on slide, then trading licks with Jim...awesome full drums in the mix for Patrick with Bo transitioning to electric keyboard after piano....
ah hell, I guess I can dream

That is awesome, and isn't that what it's all about? Our dream songs?
That would be a great song for them, and I like your line-up
As odd or obscure as it seems, I listened today to "Family Man" by Fleetwood Mac and thought about whether it would be a good song for them to cover, and I think it would and they could put just a little twist on it to make it theirs.
Was listening to When You Were Mine by Prince in the car yesterday and made dream of Jacket covering it. I couldn't find Prince singing it on YouTube, but in reality I learned the song from the movie Hot Dog, so here it is. I'm still enjoying summer, but this got me pumped for winter.

I'd love for them to add Springsteen's Ghost Of Tom Joad to their covers catalog. I know Morello just kills it, and have seen him, and Bruce do it several times, but Jim is great on this too. #CortezinPlaya @WaronDrugsJams
I know that it's pretty synth heavy, but when I happened to hear "Hazard" by Richard Marx this morning, I couldn't help but imagine MMJ performing it on stage under some dim blue lights.
**edit** And of course change the "leave this old Nebraska town" to "leave this old Kentucky town".
i'd like to read something into both MMJ and Earth, Wind and Fire playing B'roo this summer: that the members of MMJ would feel inspired and compelled to cover and EWF song somewhere on tour.
but.
BUT! if that doesn't happen i will still get to see EWF at Bonnaroo in June :cheesy:
*for the love of pete PLEASE don't let there be a scheduling conflict. if there were i may be moved to violence. which goes against the whole groovy vibe. :undecided:*
I juuuuust remembered that they played "Hit It and Quit It" at T5 and then watched the video a good ten times. What a sweetass cover. They need to bring this one back!
Don't Look Back in Anger - Oasis

D&theD are my all-time favorite band. I think they'd do this one justice too. I want to make sure that you have heard the Jam disc that came out with the box set within the last 10 years. It is just 5 songs of Duane and Eric trading licks while doing speedballs in the middle of the night. It is the most amazing disc of music I've ever heard in my life.
Agreed. I love that instrumental album, epic jams. Its amazing what this band did in such a short time frame. They're up there at the top of the list of all time bands for me as well--imagine what they could have done given more time. Same with Blind Faith:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g69EWScWE0U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g69EWScWE0U)
If you can take the angrier guitar sound from the D&D version and combine with Steve Winwood (or Jim James of course), well goddam...heavenly.
With all the new covers they brought to Mexico (especially night3) this thread has definitely become even more relevant.
After looking at everyone's requests, I think ELO would be really fun.
And I don't why but I think it would be cool see them play "hold me" by Fleetwood Mac.
Jim on acoustic and vocals and Carl playing the Lindsey Buckingham parts on guitar. I heard it the other day for the first time in a long time, and just thought they would kill it.
There are so many covers I would love to see them play, but while there live, cheesy or not, it's always fun to hear these types of songs
#freeCortez
I will also accept Low Spark or Gimme Shelter, but Cortez the Killer has been my dream for the last decade or so
There are a lot of good songs on this thread. Here are a few songs I would love to hear the guys cover for personal reasons, but my first pick is specifically for them, I think it's perfect...
Rolling Stones- Slave (with Jim walking back and forth on stage kinda yell/singing the chorus at everyone on the rail  Carl on backup vocals and sax and then it would just go into an insane extended dirty jam)
http://youtu.be/mTwnExGWsAY (http://youtu.be/mTwnExGWsAY)
Little Feat- Willin' > Don't Bogart That Joint (à la the Waiting For Columbus album)
Kinks- Nothing in This World Can Stop Me Worryin' Bout That Girl
Kinks- Alcohol (with a horn section)
Dire Straits- So Far Away
Billy Joel- Piano Man (cause it's just fun and Bo would get to play it big)
Neil Young- Cortez the Killer may actually be my favorite song of all time, and I do not say that lightly. Of course I was rooting for #cortezinplaya but when I really think about it Built to Spill owns that cover. I mean, there is no possible way MMJ is gonna top it unless they invite Doug and Neil up on stage with them. So I'll settle for an Ambulance Blues.
oh and Harry Nilsson- Coconut
I've said it before but I wasn't joking. He's a genius and that song is amazing.
I don't know if anyone really, truly owns Cortez. Gov't Mule plays a mean version of it. Apparently, Grace Potter and Jason Isbell do to. Just think Jacket is the perfect band to cover that song! #freeCortez! por favor!!!!!
Whilst on the Neil Young topic, I've always thought MMJ would kill "Cowgirl in the Sand"

Ha! Fair enough, we all got our opinions. Mr. Young himself owns Cortez but I gotta give the cover to Doug. I've seen Gov't Mule play it, it's good but it doesn't touch Built To Spill. Personally, my opinion of Warren dipped a little after he played it with Dave Matthews over and over. I still go see Gov't Mule and I think he can play the hell out of the guitar but when it comes to that song....there is no contest. Neil acoustic with a harmonica and Built to Spill Live are battling for the number one spot in my mind:)
I actually came back to this thread to add something I forgot in my previous post.

"Desperadoes Under the Eves", "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead", "Gorilla, You're a Desperado"...
Some more I think they could do justice:
JJ Cale - "Magnolia"
Lucinda Williams - "Ventura" (a male perspective would be interesting)
Jason Isbell - "The Blue"
Will Johnson - "Just to Know What You've Been Dreaming" (I know JJ has played on this one with MOF), "Rerun Pills"
The Drams - "Unhinged"
Kinks "Celluloid Heroes" "20th Century Man" "Stormy Sky"
Wilco - "California Stars" "In a Future Age"
LET ME ROLL IT..ENCORE.. WOULD BE MAGNIFICENT!
Would go absolutely bonkers for a Toussaint cover. They would KILL an up-tempo version of "Sweet Touch of Love".
"Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" - Willie Nelson
Awesome song that could've fit perfectly on At Dawn. Plus I'd chuckle when they'd sing the "only memories remain" line from it.
"STANDING ON THE MOON" - TGD
I'm not a huge covers guy but this would blow my mind and likely send me into another dimension.
"Cortez the Killer" would be incredible too as has been said. I was really hoping to hear "SOYCD" at Newport Folk Fest when the boys played with Roger Waters. Also if I could hear a full album (cuz why not right) it would be "Animals" by Floyd.
Purple Rain
JamBase: You busted out a lot of new covers at One Big Holiday last year and so far this summer, with the exception of [backing up Roger Waters at] Newport [Folk Festival], from what I've seen, you've been exclusively performing new material. Are you actively avoiding covers in 2015?
JJ: Yeah, I've been kind of tired of covers. I like playing them and we've done a lot of them over the years. They're fun in a party type atmosphere like One Big Holiday or on New Years Eve or those kinds of occasions where it's a show but also a party. Not that we don't want all of our shows to feel like a party. But at our shows, we're in more the mood and mindset to focus [exclusively] on our music because we're lucky enough to have so much music we can't fit it into a set, let alone cramming covers in. [Playing covers means] we'd be playing less of our own songs. I'm just tired of playing covers ...

Dirty Laundry
What a great cover this would be for Jim and the Crew. Go listen to it if you haven't recently. Don Henley is a stud and this song is such a great time piece of 80's music.
That would sound awesome. "Rider in the Rain" by Randy Newman (with the Eagles in the background) seems like MMJ could pull that one off as well.
Some others I think they could pull off:
Cruisin' by Smokey Robinson
Ooh La La by the Faces
Foosteps in the Dark by The Isley Brothers
Honeysuckle Blue by Drivin' N' Cryin' (I have no doubt MMJ would NAIL this tune)
Farewell My Friend by Dennis Wilson
New York Groove by Hello
Dirty Work by Steely Dan

I'd also love to see them do Bruce's Ghost Of Tom Joad like JJ and Morello did at the MusiCares tribute.

They should do a Backstreet Boys song or something crazy like that.
I've always wanted to hear Jim sing Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay". I think that would be a great cover.
Jackson 5 - I'll Be There
LITTLE FEAT's Feats Dont Fail Me Now, or Willin, or All That You Dream!!! :)
I think it'd be real funny and real awesome if they played Freebird and went straight into One Big Holiday
Mercenary Territory by LITTLE FEAT with PHJB oh my god...those chord changes and lyrics and vocals are totally MMJ....they remind me of Feat , does MMJ...so eclectic , amazing as fuck live
It would be prime if they looked into some Waylon Jennings.

Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love) was played at OBH2.
I agree they could kill with some Little Feat. Also I feel like they could pull off some Steely Dan which is probably difficult to do.
See Me, Feel Me -The Who
It seems as if Jim (The Way That He Sings) might really be inspired by this one.
