Title: Forum Album Club
Post by: wolof7 on Aug 22, 2011, 08:29 PM
Anyone interested in doing a scheduled listening party/ critque of specific albums a la a book club? Has this been done here before? Always wanted to do this but never had cool enough friends to agree to do it in person.

I am open to many ideas regarding how to set this up....Here's what I was thinking, 1x every 1-2 weeks at a specific time we could all listen to an identified album and discuss/critique/Freak&Geek out together over anything from tracklist, album art, music, lyrics anything to do with artist/abum....I'd most likely setup a new topic thread for each week. (e.g. Album Club #1 - Album/Band/courtesy of board member name here)

The only way I'd assume this could work would be if we had enough peeps participating week to week, so any ideas regarding how to keep it going would be good. Also have no idea how we would pick albums week to week aside from taking a list of participants and assigning them a week to choose an album of their choosing.....

Grooveshark, spotify, local library consortiums, itunes, local record shops to obtain albums you may not possess.

Whatdyall think? I imagine it could be pretty easy but I wouldn't set it up unless people are certainly down for it.

whatever album we choose, alady has already heard it ::)
I'd be down for sure.  Excellent idea.  Surprised something like that hadn't sprouted here yet.

Random number generator always a good way to choose.

Even if we are unable to listen at the same time, it will still be nice to have a new active thread on a new album every week or two

Thanks Easy, another option would be streaming track by track on youtube...I find you can find most songs to most albums streaming, may be a pain in the ass but I may use this method at some point as well....

I would like to leave it up to the individual picking for the week.

...I would caution to stay away from crazy rarities like bootlegs from Hasil Adkins' port-o-potty from outside his trailer or something, even like obscure Ween demos that are readily available wouldn't be fun for no one, and I love me some Ween.

I'd say stick to good albums of your choosing which are available to the general public in some way. Like a book club, we may not love the album chosen but I guess the point would be to expand our palettes if you will, discover some music and also critique without bias...I implore those involved to stick with it each week whether they like that weeks album or not.

Also thinkin I'll spearhead the inaugural session and generate a schedule for people and their respective weeks. So the first person after me I will pm this week and let them know to have an album choice pm'ed back to me.

I will announce at the end of each session the next pick and the host and add people as they will want to join the cool kids club bandwagon. I'm thinking Wednesdays at 9:30 or 10 Eastern time????

I'm thinking 1x/2 weeks so each can do their best obtaining the album in a timely manner. If all goes well maybe 1x/week through the winter doldrums?

Great, I can't wait to see what Rush record we have to listen to.  ;D  I agree each person/record needs it's own thread ............ Tracy/Pearl Jam - No Code  etc.

I think a week is plenty of time, pick a record discuss for 7 days and then a new pick.

I got a Rhapsody subscription for Christmas from my brother and it's so great.  I can listen to almost any album at any time for free.

Alright guys and gals here is the first selection of the Forum Album Club....

Listening Party/Discussion will commence 1 week from today: Weds, Aug 31st @ 9:30pm ET....i'll attach a thread for the club on this date for the needle drop at 9:30

In the meantime, secure the album, and for those of you not familiar with the album, go head and familiarize urself with it....

Also I will pm one of you who will need to message me back ur pick for Album Club #2 this week!.....and I have made a schedule which would take us week by week up to Dec 14th thru random generator, if you want to know ur date pm me as I understand people have lives to plan around....

What happens if we can't make it to certain listening parties? My classes start that day, and I'm thinking this might not be feasible on second thought.

You can probably nix me off the list Wolof, sry to drop so early  :embarassed:
I'll definitely stop by here and then when I can though if it's not too much of a drag to have a fair-weather album club lurker.

No worries Easy, we can't assume everyone can make it each week, so long as we have enough to have an active discussion, I'd say that is a success....hell i'm getting married in early October so I'll prob not be around for a week or 2...

...Ideally the needle will drop on the listening party on Weds nights but nothing is stopping the discussion from taking place throughout the week! I'd imagine others new to the party will comment every now and then as well.

I'll pm u ur week...

So quick question...is there going to be any sort of criteria for our critiques and comments or is it an open ended discussion about each album? Should we have a couple of mandatory responses such as: favorite track, least favorite track, overall album rating 1-10, etc. Just thinking out loud
Title: Re: Forum Album Club

How about two threads for each album

1. for discussion throughout the week
2. for the actual listening party

I like this idea.......we should definitely do that to produce some consistency, beyond that I'm thinking open discussion is fine....we'll see where it goes

Ruckus, I took on the inaugural listening party bc I'm an egomanical greedy control freak....don't worry tho Herb Alpert is my next pick

i like this. we should set the mandatory responses before wednesday.

Favorite Track
Least Favorite Track
Album Rating (the first one will be the hardest to do this for IMO)

I think as the host I will answer those questions (for myself) along with some facts and tidbits around the album, why I chose it and impressions etc., as my first post and urge others to do the same as they post along.

As I remember, there are plenty of quotables on Tattoo You ewind, so lyrics maybe fun to review!

I am unsure if we would need 2 threads 1 listening party/ 1 discussion, i think if I setup the thread for the listening party, discussion will continue through the week off that thread. 2 threads may be too confusing and a little much imo.

How do we want to setup the rating system? Something fluid for each poster, or like the creme brulee blog, completely artbitrary? 1-10 works for me, maybe for this one 1-10 tounges?

Ok, I see.  I thought we started talking about the album leading up to the listening party.  So the discussion starts after the listening party.  Got it.

I think......
So each album gets two weeks one week to secure it and one week to discuss, then a new album is picked.  So the next album will be picked on September 7th.  Correct?

Yup the person to host the 2nd Forum album club has been notified. We will announce that album at the end of the first listening party and give peeps a week to secure/familiarize that one as we continue to discuss Tattoo You up until the 7th!

Any other spotify users notice that there are like 4-5 tracks missing from Tattoo You? My only gripe about spotify.
p.s. I'm far from any sort of seasoned music critic so dont go expecting any mind blowing revelations from me in this little circle ???
Nope. I had all the tracks on mine.
Huh, that's wierd. Looked again and they're all there.  I'm probably just an idiot

I would love to get in on the party if it's not too late.  Not sure if I'll be able to get in on the listening parties, but I'll definitely check out the albums and give my feedback.

If anyone has a Spotify invite it would be much appreciated. :dankk2:

Juniper Tar-To the trees

I'm not sure if this is on spotify (its on mine, but it might just be because I have it on my computer). If its not, I'm pretty sure they have it on their website for free, in Exchange for an email.

I was. I know this album through and through, but I haven't listened to it in a long time. I used to moderate a cure message board for a while, I'm kind of a Cure geek. But anyways, I was listening last night and just thought "fuck, I really need to switch up my album for the album club!", Haha. I know I have been slacking in the contribution department, so my opinion might not carry as much weight, but I had to take my kids to our county fair last week so they could ride some of the rides and eat some greasy fair food.  Good times...  ::)   ;)

Anyways, hoping to be a part of the discussion tonight and I'd probably side more to Kiss Me for old times sake.  But whatever you decide is fine by me.

I guess I'll weigh in and say I am down for either....I was only able to listen to Juniper Tar once this week(solid)....i guess as a future statute I'd say no switch ups....unless you have to and in that case albums I propose that the chosen album is locked in for that weeks listening party the Sunday before the album club, but still it's not suggested....Any additions to this?

....this is due to the fact that other members have a week to get to know and obtain the chosen album....

....otherwise any other input on how it's going? I figured attendence would be a problem for the actual listening parties, unsure how to control that. I will most likely miss a week or 2 in October myself.

I can speak for myself and say that it has been a success and has been a joy to see my vision take off and I thank those who have participated for that....I really wanted to do this to discuss music (I can do that all day) and discover new music; both needs of which have been satisfied with each club.....thanks.

So, I have two albums in mind and I'm going to let you guys vote on which one to pick.  I'm way too torn to pick, and I trust you people to make the right choice.  The album that has the most votes by 1pm EST tomorrow is the one we'll go with.

1.This is the album that I've had in mind since the idea came along to do this album club.  One of my favorite records of all time, I've read everything I could about it in the last few weeks.  I've even taken notes!   I'm an English Lit Major and this plays like a novel, with beautiful poetry inside, themes, and character development.  They just broke UP.  :)  :'(
REM – UP
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Ghgc6y00L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

2.I pulled this album out the other night.  I don't get this record out unless I'm in a very specific mood.  I'm usually really depressed and this record makes me feel like the world is an ok place to live in...just because we can produce an album like this.  It seems like the ultimate album to talk about.
Daniel Johnston – Hi How Are You

"I like beer" has just about pissed me off in the REM thread to where I'm about to make an executive decision on this democracy and pick "UP" just to spite everyone that thinks that REM stopped making good records after Automatic or New Adventures.  Sorry, but "UP" is A Masterpiece......and I WILL break out the notes to prove it.      ;)

Sorry Daniel I will just watch the Devil and Daniel Johnston for the 500th time this week too

LOL.  I would have voted REM even though it is a post Automatic album you chose...   :P

REM never stopped making good music.  I just was a little bitter when Warner Bros tried to make them go all mainstream with the pop heavy Green.  To REM's credit, it didn't take them long to tell Warner Bros to shove it up their ass and start making real music again.

That said, I grew up on REM's first 5 albums so, not only were these records great fucking music, they hold a certain sentimental value to them as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discounted_cash_flow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discounted_cash_flow)
The most widely used method of discounting is exponential discounting, which values future cash flows as "how much money would have to be invested currently, at a given rate of return, to yield the cash flow in future." Other methods of discounting, such as hyperbolic discounting, are studied in academia and said to reflect intuitive decision-making, but are not generally used in industry.

In Greek mythology, the lotus-eaters (Greek λωτοφάγοι, lōtophagoi), also referred to as the lotophagi or lotophaguses (singular lotophagus /ləˈtɒfəɡəs/) or lotophages (singular lotophage /ˈloʊtəfeɪdʒ/), were a race of people living on an island near North Africa (possibly Djerba) dominated by lotus plants. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary food of the island and were narcotic, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy.

Allegory
Allegory is a figurative mode of representation conveying meaning other than the verbal. Allegory communicates its message by means of symbolic figures, actions or symbolic representation. Allegory is generally treated as a figure of rhetoric, but an allegory does not have to be expressed in language: briefly, an allegory is a device used to present an idea, principle or meaning, which can be presented in literary form, such as a poem or novel, or in visual form, such as in painting or drawing.
As a literary device, an allegory in its most general sense is an extended metaphor. As an artistic device, an allegory is a visual symbolic representation. An example of a simple visual allegory is the image of the grim reaper. Viewers understand that the image of the grim reaper is a symbolic representation of death.
Not every fiction with general application is an allegory.

Rhetoric includes the study and the use of language with persuasive effect

1.   from biological death, by providing for them an eternal life or long-lasting afterlife (cf. afterlife).[1]
2.   from spiritual death, by providing divine law, illumination, and judgment.[1]
3.   from divine punishment, particularly from Hell, by granting them acceptance into Heaven.[citation needed]
4.   from having sinful character and conduct, through a process of positive moral change.[2]

Hope
One psychologist argues that hope "...comes into play when our circumstances are dire", when "things are not going well or at least there's considerable uncertainty about how things will turn out". She states that "[h]ope literally opens us up...[and] removes the blinders of fear and despair and allows us to see the big picture [, thus allowing us to] become creative" and have "elief in [a] better future". A perfect play the entire way through..... and it creates the perfect launch pad for heading onto the astral planes of dreaming.  I heard someone refer to it on here somewhere as being ''musical xanax''.... quite accurate...  And I remember some musician in Rolling Stone once referring to it as an album "you cannot turn the volume up too high" on, so mellow...

No matter what comes of the album club, you'll need Nick Drake in your life!  And hey, Jim covers "Northern Sky"!!!   And Sam Beam covers "Place to Be"!!!   :D

Pink Moon is a perfect album imho, wasn't surprised when Alexis chose it, it's one of her favs.....just keep in mind it's only 29 minutes long....got a strong lead tho

Truth....after the first member declined, I reached out towards 2 others who were further on down the schedule, by the time i got their declines it was Tuesday and I didn't have time to seek out another person to take it on.

...unsure how to proceed with that kinda situation.....might just chose one of the regulars to take it on should it happen again, which I predict it will.

Hey-

I'm one of the "regulars" that passed on picking an album.   I am still enthused but a combination of work and kids stuff has gotten me super busy this month.   Oh, and watching the Red Sox implode into disgrace.   I blame Ruckus.

On the music front, I'd like to listen to the forum album numerous times and let it sink in a bit.   I also like to know the music well for shows I am going to, and I'm seeing Felice Bros, Portugal the Man, and Blitzen Trapper in the near future, none of which I was familiar with a month ago.   So I am "digesting" a ton of new albums and there's only so much time for this for me.

I'm mentioning all this because later this month if I get another chance to nominate, I'd happily pick the new PtM because I'm listening to it lots anyway and would love to get some discussion going.  Or the Alberta Cross (who's playing w/ PtM, because I already know that album cold)

We should all keep in mind, the listening party is a fun part of this and a way to generate the discussion but the club could continue as long as we want to discuss...I have something coming up to post on the Tattoo you thread...

Ghosts, I ran out of time to check with anyone else....certainly next time we run into this situation, I will ask a regular to take over....

g33ta certainly no worries, we all know how life goes no need to explain, I will be missing some weeks upcoming due to the big day....also I'm sure Ms. Wolof chose AC and PtM due to the upcoming show, also PtM new album has not left her stereo since its come out, she still hasn't listened to the new Deer Tick all the way through bc of it...PS I suggest Ana's Taqueria before the Boston Show?

Ok Marquee Moon is out ;D. But seriously if no one has listened to it, do so immediately.  I was also late to the party Mike but I'm glad I discovered it.

Kinda want to pick something from a smaller, undiscovered act or at least something newish

Brooding and dark?
Upbeat and getdown?
Loud and heavy?
Technical?
Or something excessively emo for Ghosts and Sweatboard?
I have no idea how you guys chose so easily.

Or something excessively emo for Ghosts and Sweatboard?
I have no idea how you guys chose so easily.

Amazing Record

"40 dollars" might be the greatest song written about drugs ever.....and "Candy Cane Crawl" might be the best song to ever follow the greatest song ever written about drugs ever.

I don't really give a fuck if you like Gregg Dulli or not but you should at least know who he is and what he's about.

let's go with Twilight Singers:  Powder Burns--- and I will pick an album later.

I may have gotten the message mixed up and don't want to add to the confusion.   Plus, the album I was going to pick is not on spotify, which seems like a bummer.

Well, hit Blackberry Belle first.  Dulli's still on full drug tilt and recorded this shortly after the death of Ted Demme (film director, good friend of Dulli).  Demme died playing basketball, but BB is about a suicide and the events leading up to it.  Crazy great.  Or hit Afghan Whigs Gentlemen or 1965.  The Whigs and The Singers are quite different in my book as far as sound goes.  Dulli's themes are always the same: sex, drugs, helplessness.

Whigs more straight ahead rock; Singers more instrumentation (keyboards especially) - similar dynamics.  Powder Burns is after drugs (he's still hits the booze though - owns a few bars and a hotel in New Orleans.  Guess they do quite well and allow him to do whatever he wants with his music without beholding) and recorded in part in New Orleans right after Katrina.

Just wanted apologize to those who fully participate for just lurking up to this point.  I have listened to all the choices, I just have been too lazy to comment on each of them.  Thanks to all those who have made selections, I have listened to some bands I never would have otherwise and been reminded of some old favorites that had gotten lost in the shuffle.

Yep, I have dropped the ball here. No knock on anyone but this resmebles "thinking" too much, something I am really doing to much of these days, so, as I have participated listening, I haven't participated in writing out text. I am being vouyeristic and will be happy to skip my turn to pick.

I apologize for not being as active in the past few weeks, its been crazy lately.

Anyhow, I am wondering if posting a monthly schedule and filling in the blocks as we go would work better for week to week album selections at this point....it's getting a bit harder to fill weeks and it may be easier on myself instead of finding people week to week.

I would ask those who have not picked an album yet to come forth first and fill in what week you'd like and we would go from there...Also if you have an album picked you can post it when you choose a date (or should we keep the element of surprise/ album reveal, a week to week thing?)

...also important reminder: remember if you choose a week you must announce your pick at the album club before your own so people have a week to obtain, listen, absorb the album

For Example:

Nov 9th - ILikeBeer

Nov 16th - (open)

Nov 23rd - (open)

Nov 30th - (open)

Dec 7th - (open)

Dec 14th - (open)

etc.

etc.
any thoughts?

Hey all.  I sort of dropped the ball this week for the album club.   :-\

I had it on my brain that I was picking next week and didn't realize until yesterday that this was my week and tonight's the night.  Sorry for the late heads up for this week's pick.  I was torn between two albums but I decided since I had made mention of picking this album earlier, I'd stick to my guns.  So the album choice of the week is:

In honor of their annoucement of their reuniting and all, not to mention it's one of my all-time favorite albums!  Hope to see everyone tonight at 9:30.

Yeah I was late to the party on this one Jaimoe.  I listened to it for the 1st time around a year ago and it hasn't gotten old.  It really has become one of my favorite albums ever as well.  No need for superlatives.  The guitar work and interplay are stunning.

So you're an old dude ;)  I'm guessing you were in your late teens when this album came out.  Were you one of the cool kids that recognized its genius immediately or came back to it at a later time?

I started by listening to the CD reissue with all the bonus tracks.  It sucks that the vinyl that I recently purchased doesn't contain Little Johnny Jewel (obviously) because that was my favorite track off of the disc outside of the title track.
