Title: Heavy Metal!!
Post by: Ruckus on Apr 22, 2011, 09:30 AM
I figure I'd restart this Dragonboy classic though I fear there aren't too many metalheads in here.  Where's Buawwwwwww?  Good to have Darklands back!

So yeah, I've been listening to Agalloch a lot lately and have also just discovered math/prog techni geeks from Austin called Scale the Summit!  Fantastically melodic, technically complex nerdathon music.

The bassist looks like Dark.   ;D

Love that track Ruckus, I think regarding Agalloch, it's the vocals I just can't get behind yet...Keep those suggestions coming though, I'm a relative newb into the metal universe.

I think since I've become engaged I've started reverting to really boyish hobbies (metal, graphic novels, semi-role-playing board games about zombies) much to my fiancee's chagrin. good thing she thinks I have money  ::) ;) ;D

Also anyone else hear that GWAR intends to have sex with all of their fans? Check it:

In high school I used to dabble in the realm of heavy metal. I was into a Swedish band called In Flames for awhile. Check them out!

Yeah, I've really taken to Scale the Summit a bunch.  I read about them in the recent Decibel magazine and I can't believe I never heard of them before, now knowing that they opened for Dream Theater for a time.  I've been listening to the new one, The Collective, which Letchford (lead guitarist and principal songwriter) says was more about writing accessible, mature songs and less about showing off their ridiculous technical proficiency.  I believe both guitarists play custom made 8 strings (I think they make 'em) and the bassist a six string.  There was a time in the late 90's to 2000 where I was into a lot of math rock such as Don Caballero and Volta de Mar.  This reminds me of them but far more technically advanced and progressive metal sounding.

I hear you about Agalloch.  I recall watching a youtube video of them doing Falling Snow and one of the comments was something to the effect of, "These guys would fuckin' rule if the singer didn't sound like he had a pineapple stuck in his throat."

I still listen to Baroness quite frequently as well as Kylesa's Static Tensions.  Those are more on the sludge side.  Yeah, I think I just am a fanboy of the Savannah, GA scene.

They are badass live!  I trekked down to Richmond from Baltimore to see them open for the Deftones because they weren't playing anywhere else nearby.  We probably left three songs into the Deftones set though. ;D

I can't wait for a new album for them to headline on.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccckkkk!!!!!!!!

Speaking of The Sword... guess who just got tickets to see The Sword opening for KYUSS LIVES!  at Terminal 5 NYC in September?
That's gonna be a great follow up to the week before... going to see the BIG 4 at Yankee Stadium!!!  September is going to be a crazy metal month for me!

I've just been on a crazy Motorhead and Clutch kick ever seeing the two of them together... it's really all I've been listening to these days.

Buaawwwwwwwwww!  Good to hear from ya!  Yeah, I managed to catch the Sword last year and they were killer.  I was watching the Big 4 at Sonisphere from last year on Palladium and I can only imagine the spectacle it will be at Yankee Stadium.  However, the closer with everyone on stage was downright ridiculous...in a not good way ;D. I'm glad I got my Megadeth Rust in Peace on last year 8)

Yeah this is just one of those experiences I simply need to be a part of.  I've seen these bands countless times in my youth, but to see them all together and be in that crowd should be something else entirely.  I don't know personally I thought the big jam at the end was cool as hell.  I'm looking forward to the whole experience.  Just gotta find some shows to tide me over till then!  ;D

Nice!  I know I've discussed this with you once before, but having never gotten the chance to see the original Kyuss this was a pretty big deal for me.  And the fact that The Sword is playing with them?  Makes this a must see event!

I am an old school 80s metal head. I still love my Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, as well as the Big 4 back in the day, etc.  I caught the big 4  broadcast the night it ran in the theaters live or semi live, it was a great experience.  People moshing the movies!!  And boy it was loud.

I havent been able to grasp a lot of the new metal, I think its growling vocals that dominate metal today, I'll take Halford's or Dickinson's style any day.

I hadn't listened to metal for a while til I heard Mastodon's Blood Mountain a few years back.  Woah that's good stuff!  And live they were prob the best live technical show I have seen since Mr. Bungle.
Is Kyuss Lives a tribute or are a few members on the road together?  Hopefully Oliveri is makin a living somewhere.

Saw Scale the Summit last night at Sonar in Baltimore.  They were part of the Slaughter Survivor's tour that included some really crappy metal bands.  All in all there were 6 bands on the tour and an additional 7 local bands that played.  All in all, 13 bands for 14 bucks though I only went to see STS.  They were incredible!!!!  It saddened me to think that they opened for Dream Theater a few years back in front of thousands of fans and yet they weren't even headlining this middling lineup and playing in front of 50 fans.

They were all so friendly and approachable afterwards as well.  I can't say enough about these guys.

Enjoyed reading this thread.

Is anyone into Wolves in the Throne Room?  I recently heard their new record, Celestial Lineage, and it is really great.  They have some similarities to Agalloch, so if that doesn't appeal to you this probably wouldn't either.

I need to check out the new Mastodon, and am excited to see them in Nov. with Dillinger Escape Plan, who are a seriously brutal live band.

Yeah, I'm going to see Mastodon in DC as well on this tour.  Can't wait!  I just finished reading a rather lengthy article on them in the October Decibel in which the graced the cover yet again.  Some of the interesting things that came from it were that they finally strayed from a concept album, switched artists for the 1st time (cover, merch, etc) and decided to be more melodic in their vocal stylings.  They referred to it as "having fun" and "growing up."  Something tells me that this album will offend much of their core fanbase but I have to say that I am quite enjoying what I'm hearing so far though I'm only through the 1st two tracks.

Hey Ruckus, if you're in the DC area as well, maybe we can meet at a show sometime.

Metal shows on my calendar are Boris/Liturgy at the Black Cat, Opeth in Baltimore, and  Mastodon at the 9:30 club.

I've heard about half of the new Mastodon and really like it so far.  I like how they have gotten a little more accessible on the last couple records.

Some great metal out of Georgia lately between Mastodon, Baroness, and Kylesa.

Hey Whippy, we'll definitely swap info before the DC show.  My girlfriend is the Mastodon diehard and we're going for her birthday.  I guess you're not going to Sword, Kyuss this Saturday at 930.

Also were you at the Kylesa Black Cat show last year?  We were one off the rail in front of Laura and were pretty damn bonkers into it.  Anyways, in her tour diary, she noted the Black Cat show as here favorite of the year for a rockin' crowd.  I was just shocked to hear any musician ever say something like that about a DC crowd.

Here is what I think is a brand new Baroness song halfway through though I guess it may be a cover?

Yes, I was at the Kylesa show in the back room of the Black Cat earlier this year.  My buddy and I were the first two people off the rail (if you can call it a rail), but more in front of the dark haired guy who plays guitar and sings.  If you saw an older (40) balding dude headbanging in front of that guy, that was me.

That was a great show.  I especially liked their cover of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", and I was kind of shocked when they didn't whip that one out at Bonnaroo this year, as it would have been perfect for that crowd.

I like Kyuss and The Sword, and actually got to see the original Kyuss lineup in 1993 (opening for Faith No More).  I would go to that show at the 9:30 club this saturday, but will instead be seeing Primus at the new Fillmore venue.  I hope that's a good choice.  I go way back with Primus and the new album is pretty respectable.

I would probably recognize you from that Kylesa show, as I have a pretty good memory of many of the other people who were right at the stage.  I also think I know who you are from MMJ shows, but not positive on that.

This is getting a little far afield from metal, but are you going to the Scratch Acid show in early November at the 9:30?

I saw the Opeth/Katatonia tour in Hartford and night 1 in NYC.  These are the first Opeth shows I've seen without any death metal growls and it was a different experience for sure.  I don't have the new Opeth album (ordered it but haven't received yet).  My friend who came to the NYC show said it is very 70s-sounding...he mentioned Jethro Tull and King Crimson.  I recommend this show as it's quite good even without the death metal songs that Opeth fans know and love.
I saw Baroness once on a bill with Witchcraft and they killed it.
I'm a fan of Agalloch and don't mind the vocals as others upthread seem to do.

Don't forget their 1st two EPs called 1st and 2nd.  They are simply amazing!  In fact, that was the steal of Record Store Day when my gf found the viny double EP for 13 bucks hiding in the back of the metal section.

You really can't go wrong with any of them and I think it's essential that you listen to 1st, 2nd, Red and Blue.

I won't be at the Scratch Acid show.  As for the Black Cat show, I was the short, stocky Asian mutt that looks like a hispanic dude rockin' out with the long, black hair and beard.  I was with my girlfriend and one other guy.  I on the other hand have very little memory of that show ;D  My buddy mentioned the Floyd cover but I didn't recall it and had to look it up later.

Have a great time at the show tonight.  I haven't listened to any Primus since Pork Soda but the portion of the set I saw at Hangout Fest this year sounded excellent!

I am sure Primus didn't disappoint, but Kyuss put on one hell of a show that night.  Nick was spot on and Garcia as well.  Green machine was epic and it was awesome getting to hear all of the old cuts.  Thought about checking them out at the Baltimore show, but have been doing too many shows here lately to make that one.

Primus was pretty great, actually.  One set of oldies, then a second set of the entire new album (which I'm not sure needed the full album treatment), then a couple more oldies for an encore.

Lucky for me I got a chance to see Kyuss when they came to Baltimore.  Great show and it was really good to see Nick Oliveri again.  Kyuss was one of those reunions that really felt like it was coming from the right place.  There was a really low turnout for the Kyuss show in Baltimore, which surprised me, as it's usually a pretty big metal town.

Brett, Rob, since you guys are in the DC area, are either of you going to go see Ghost at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Jan?  Seems like it could be an interesting show, but I'm not overly fond of their record.

Brett, maybe I'll get to see you at the Jeff the Brotherhood/The Kills show at the 9:30 in Feb.

The DC show was pretty packed but I still managed to snag third row in between sets.  I don't really consider Kyuss metal, much more harder rock IMO, but I guess they really classify as stoner rock, but that's not a very big type.

I hadn't seen that Ghost was playing at R&R, but I like the venue as I have seen Trail of Dead play there a few times and it is very intimate for those shows, but the acoustics could use some work.  I'll have to check out the date to see if it works for us.

You'll definately see us at the Jeff the Brotherhood show as I got tix as soon as they were announced, love that band.  We'll have to meet up and share a drink or something since we didn't get to talk too much at the MSG show besides at the end.  Cheers.

Seen Down a couple of times, but once was right after Phil had a back procedure so he was pretty subdued so it was only so so.  Was underwhelmed with the other performance as well even though I love some of album especially "Eyes of the South" and Bury me in Smoke.  I saw him play with Super Joint Ritual back in 03 and he wailed then, but still nothing like the good old days when they ruled Metal in the 90's.

I think I lucked out the night I saw him. He was on fire. I've seen a lot of concerts, and as a front man his energy and command of the audience were both over the top.  But I've talked to other friends who've seen Down concerts when Phil was using and they were really disappointed. I guess it's hit or miss with them.

I saw them at the Emerald Theatre (Mt. Clemens, MI) in Sept. 2009.

Yes, there must be something in the water in Savannah, the amout of killer metal coming out of that town doesn't completely make sense.

I wish I could convince some of you DC-area folks to come with me to see Alcest and Deafheaven next week.  Alcest is a great mix of black metal and shoegazer, two great tastes that taste great together.

Let's re-ignite this thread!

I found that the Sword has a new album coming out tomorrow called Apocryphon

you can listen here http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/5...after (http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/5%20...after) first listen I like. I know fans weren't into the concept album Warp Riders compared to their first 2 but I loved it. This album definitely harkens their hard rock, Sabbath sounds. Time will tell. they are coming to Providence next month and thinking of going.

Yay, the metal thread is back.  I'll definitely check out the new album by The Sword, thanks for the reminder.

It's more metalcore than metal, but my favorite heavy record so for this year is the new Converge album, All We Love We Leave Behind.

Also, I haven't heard it yet, but the new Pig Destroyer record is supposed to be great.

The energy at the Pig Destroyer show I saw on Friday was great but I found their music to be too repetitive in style.  I still haven't listened to their new album other than what I heard that night.

Necropsy, one of the openers, were great with some throwback dueling guitar thrash work tossed in.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the venue in time to see Royal Thunder, an awesome Atlanta hard rock band with a great female lead that deathstick introduced me to.  I highly recommend their debut full length from this year.  I've been listening to it quite a bit since picking up their vinyl Friday night.

I still need to check out that Converge Whippy.  Thanks for bumping this thread wolof

Not really a metal fan, though my first concert ever was Iron Maiden/Quiet Riot, and in my early teens it was pretty much all 'metal'. Judas Priest, Scorpions, Dokken, Dio, Ozzy, etc. were favorites, but it's not really my thing anymore.  I guess it's too heavy, or I'm too old, or both...

Ruckus, I did check out that Scale The Summit you suggested early in the thread, just curious to hear what sort of 'metal' you were discussing, it's pretty good.  It isn't what I think of as metal at all, and probably not that indicative of the rest of the new metal you are discussing, but I thought it was almost jazzy.  It actually kinda reminded me of Explosions In The Sky.  I listened to your link, as well as new song by them from this year called Redwoods, not bad at all.

Oh yeah, Scale the Summit is far from what most picture "metal" to be.  It's the RUSH prog nerd in me that drew me to their music with their complex arrangements and time signature changes.  Their music is very melodic and as you suggested, also appeals to jazz minded people as well.  Their album Carving Desert Canyons is my favorite, serving as a nice middle ground between the thrashy shredfest of Monument and the more refined and subtle Collective

Because this is an MMJ forum, I don't think people have strayed too far into the "heavy" stuff but I can attest to the fact that Whippy and I think a live Meshuggah show can destroy anything in a 5 block radius.

I don't consider SOAD as metal, really, but they probably fit that category closer than anything else.

Here's a great recent release, Years Past Matter by Krallice.

I highly recommend checking this one out if you have a hankering for the heavy.

I'll actually be at that show, me and a friend are driving up from DC to catch them.  Also checking them out in Richmond the day before. IMO the best show of the year was me seeing them in Baltimore during the 100 degree plus weather this summer.  Epic metal, big pit, crowd was totally into it.

Earth: The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull

Anyone on board with Earth? They are what I can only describe as Post-Doom drone. They have some definite Stoner metal qualities in there as well.

Earth to me feels like something I should love, but it just unfolds way too slowly for my taste (thought I haven't heard the new one yet).  I've felt before like I would like them better if I could listen to it in fast forward.  Live they almost put me to sleep the one time I saw them.

I saw a ton of great metal last weekend at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin.

Red Fang were really good, though I feel like they still have a good amount of maturing to do as a band and will keep getting better.

Kvelertak were good straight ahead Norwegian metal, really enjoyable early afternoon set.

Black Tusk was a great set of 1.  Disengage brain.  2.  Bang head.

Napalm Death were amazing and one of the best sets of the festival.  Drumming for that band must be as taxing as it looks as the drummer hurled during their set - twice.

Torche was very good instrumentally, but the poppy, sunny elements of the music don't really fit well for the kind of music they are going for, in my opinion.

Converge was my second favorite set of the festival (behind Public Image Ltd.).  What really sets that band apart is the insane technical skill of the band and the complexity of their songs.

Not really metal, but Tomahawk was great.  Mike Patton is an evil genius.  Look for this band to rule the world in 2013.

Pallbearer was really impressive doom metal.  I was very excited to learn after the festival about that these guys are doing a tour with Enslaved in 2013.  Great double bill.

Liturgy was interesting in that they have lost their drummer and now their bassist and play as a two guitar duo with a drum machine.  It's actually much better than it sounds, though, and they are just doing something different now rather than trying to replicate what they could do with a full band.  Their use of a drum machine really turned some people off, though.

Also not really metal, but Turbonegro was really fun.  The new singer is a good fit and the band seemed very much intact.  Nothing essential, but a great end to the festival, as the final set on Sunday night.

Looks like you had quite the weekend, Whippy.

I just saw Red Fang and Black Tusk for a couple of shows this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.  The crowd was really into it and Lord Dying was also pretty good for a younger band.  Black Tusk was a little more black metal, but definately stoner metal as well.  I really liked this 3 piece as they had great intensity and it seemed like most of their newer tracks were a little more developed.  Plus the one guy has a very sweet beard.  Red Fang was excellent, who I really find funny when they talk on stage.  I think they will continue to grow and get better, but I think they kind of have that not take anything too seriously attitude that is nice.  Plus it was nice seeing the groups in small venues where they come out to watch the other bands and talk to fans.  I still say my concert of the year so far has been seeing them play in Baltimore this summer, blistering great set.

Plus I love Turbonegro, but its not really the same without Hank.  I just can't get into the Duke.

I was at last night's Red Fang show at Underground Arts.  I thought Red Fang killed it!  I was bummed that Indian Handcrafts couldn't make it due to visa issues, was really looking forward to them.  Lord Dying and Black Tusk got the crowd riled up, just not favorites of mine.  They definitely made some new fans at the show though as the merch table got busy after each of their sets.

I agree with Manonthemoon hoping that Red Fang doesn't start to take themselves too seriously... they are so much fun!  Their videos and stage banter is hilarious.

My wife suggested I sign up and post in here. I am an oldschool metal fan - I bought my first Iron Maiden LP in 1983 and still have it. I enjoy metal a lot still despite turning 40 this year. I'm a music writer that focuses primarily on metal, I do a radio show that's all metal and work in the industry so I get to see and listen to A LOT of metal, which keeps me up to date.

Some of my faves this year include the new Royal Thunder and Hooded Menace albums on Relapse, the Pallbearer debut on Profound Lore, the Saint Vitus comeback album from this spring and I am super super excited about the new Voivod album that will be out in early 2013.

I like MMJ a lot too :)

And thanks, RDist52 for the recommendation on Eagle Claw.

There are a couple great metal tours coming up in early 2013.  One is Enslaved/Pallbearer, and the other is Gojira/The Atlas Moth/Devin Tonwsend Project.  I don't know DTP, but the other two bands on that bill are great.

RDist, I love your diverse tastes in music!  I gave Eagle Claw a listen the other day when I saw them on the Sword ticket and I thought it was solid but that it lacked something to take it to the next level ala Russian Circles and Scale the Summit.  Something tells me seeing them live would change that.

Hey alienlanes.  Welcome   I'm really digging the Royal Thunder album as well and it's great to hear a metal afficionado and writer jump on board here.  Look forward to hearing some more reviews and recommendations.  Although calling Royal Thunder metal would seem to be a stretch, I'd like to mention a local band in the same vein if more on the psych rock side that I hope gains a little traction called The Pilgrim.  They too have a female lead and while her vocals might not be as versatile or strong as Royal Thunder's, their dueling guitar work and live sound are great!

Their live stuff I've heard recently has seemed heavier

Yes, I was at the Kylesa show in the back room of the Black Cat earlier this year.  My buddy and I were the first two people off the rail (if you can call it a rail), but more in front of the dark haired guy who plays guitar and sings.  If you saw an older (40) balding dude headbanging in front of that guy, that was me.

That was a great show.  I especially liked their cover of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", and I was kind of shocked when they didn't whip that one out at Bonnaroo this year, as it would have been perfect for that crowd.

I would probably recognize you from that Kylesa show, as I have a pretty good memory of many of the other people who were right at the stage.  I also think I know who you are from MMJ shows, but not positive on that.

The Kylesa B Sides album released today has a version of Set the Controls on it

Also Eagle Claw must be seen live, what I've heard on tape does not equate to their show.

Third, I haven't looked back on old posts but right now I can't get enough of Pallbearer's Sorrow and extinction. Definitely Doom Metal pagentry at it's greatest and it's this band's first release, superb production. The vocals are secondary to the guitars and drums and their builds and slow riffs are, at times crushing. Definitely my top Doom album of the year.  I implore all to listen to it, it's on Spotify.

I saw Eyehategod for the first time on November 28 at Brooklyn's great Saint Vitus Bar.  They definitely lived up to their reputation as legends of sludge metal.  They mentioned they've been working on a new album but I'm not sure when it will be out.

I mention Pallbearer a couple times earlier in this thread.  Great record and great live band.  Their tour with Enslaved in 2013 is going to be great.

For selfish reasons I want you to do the Fillmore with me (and also manonthemoon, I think), but I'm sure TLA in Philly is a much cooler venue.

Have you noticed that stretch of seven shows on their schedule from Orlando to Boston without a night off?  Those dudes are not human.

That's a tough stretch for any band, let alone one that expends so much energy onstage at their age.  Though we haven't purchased tickets, I think the Fillmore may happen.  Penny loves Meshuggah.  Maybe she'll come too.

I'm heading up to Philly on 1/19 for this bad boy.  Any other east coast Full Metal Jacketers also going?

I'm in a bit of disbelief around seeing Converge, Pig Destroyer, Tombs, and Evoken all in one night.

You fucking rockstar!  If we didn't have dinner plans, we'd be there with ya.  I'm pretty Pig Destroyered out.  Just about a 45 minute set is all I need from them.  Grindcore just gets so repetitive quickly.

Converge on the other hand is a band that I just have to see!  I was listening to their last one last night and was blown away again.  Do they just call that mathcore?

The Decibel 100th issue show in Philly was fantastic.  If you had to pick the two bands in the world of extreme metal that are kicking the most ass right now, Pig Destroyer and Converge would be very logical picks, so it was great to see them on the same bill.

Tombs were also fantastic, and way better live than I was expecting.  Repulsion and Evoken were also very good.  Regarding Municipal Waste, I hope I never cross paths with that band again, but 5 out of 6 is pretty damn good.

I know alinelanes was there as well, I'd love to hear his thoughts on it.

One other thing about the Decibel 100th issue show, since I know there are some Baroness fans.

Converge was introduced by John Baizley (singer of Baroness), who talked about how Converge's music was one of the things that helped him pull through and gave him hope as he was recovering from being badly injured in a tour bus accident last fall.  John then came out and joined Converge for "Coral Blue."  Someone posted a good video of it on Youtube:

I had a great time at the Decibel 100th issue anniversary show on Saturday. It was a quick round trip - left home at 7 AM on Saturday, drove to Philly arriving at 4:30 PM, went for dinner and the show and headed home at 1:45 AM, arriving at my doorstep at 10:30 AM Sunday morning.

I went to Philly with my friend who is a writer for the magazine. He made a last minute decision to go and I managed to score a ticket on Wednesday too. I was most excited to see Repulsion and Pig Destroyer again, but here is my take on all the bands.

EVOKEN: I never got to see the CA doom band MORGION in their timespan, but this was pretty close to that. I love slow, heavy doom like this, although I was definitely in the minority of the people I was with. I watched two songs and was satisfied, but my traveling pal said he had enough after the first riff. (Should also note that I LOVED the introduction that MOUNTAIN GOATS frontman John Darnielle gave before they played).

TOMBS: I saw these guys the last time I was in Philly, at a small bar with DYSRHYTHMIA about four years ago. I didn't really like their last studio album, which I thought was just more of the same for them (GODFLESH worship) but they played a bunch of new songs at this show that were more of my taste.

MUNICIPAL WASTE: I am an old school metal guy. I was into thrash as a teenager back in the late 80s during the first and second wave and also loved the crossover stuff. I like the MW albums, but I have always loved them live. I can understand why people wouldn't like them, as it's juvenile, drunken simple thrash stuff, but it's done really well and they have a lot of fun doing it. I will admit a little bit of bias towards them, as their drummer is an old friend of mine that I've known for 17+ years, but I thought their set was great and they had quite the old school circle pit going. Was cool to see Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES,DISFEAR) come out and sing a song, which he also did when I saw them on the Barge to Hell cruise in early Dec.

REPULSION: I saw this band a few years ago at Maryland Death Fest on one of the outdoor stages, but was really looking forward to seeing them inside on a big stage. There were some definite sound problems with their set - Marissa Martinez's guitar was cutting in and out and it was very difficult to hear the snare for the first three songs (you need to be able to hear the snare in grindcore/death metal!) but it was a fun sloppy set. Their Horrified album is an absolute death metal classic and it's so nice to hear those songs live, nostalgia trip indeed.

PIG DESTROYER: The most packed set of the night. Insanely good set. Singer JR has gained about 100 lbs in the past three years, but they still owned it. So good

CONVERGE: I just saw them about two months ago in Rochester. I like this band, but don't love them. Musically they are fantastic, but their vocalist Jacob Bannon is hit or miss for me. He was more hit than miss on Saturday, thankfully, and I really enjoyed this set. It was amazing to see John Baizley get on stage with them (I'm a huge BARONESS fan) and their guitarist Kurt Ballou is an absolute monster on guitar. This is the best set I have seen them play since the 1999 New England Metal Fest.

The venue where this show was at, Union Transfer, is apparently only about a year old. Having said that, this place is gold. I would never hesitate to go see bands there. Great sightlines, nice balcony, cool bar area in the back (where they show the stage on large TVs too - smart). The front room where you come in has ample room for merch and also had a cool food vendor selling tacos and vegan food as well as water, pop and popcorn. Wish I could have stayed over and had the time to go see NEUROSIS on Sunday night too!

Thanks so much, alienlanes, for giving your review.  Very cool to hear a take on the show from someone with way more metal history and knowledge than I have.

I didn't know that was the Mountain Goats guy who introduced Evoken.  I loved it as well, absolutely hilarious.

Agree about the venue (Union Transfer) as well, pretty much a perfect venue in terms of sound, sight, character, and comfort/convenience.  I wish it was in my town.

Agreed, thanks alienlanes for letting us know about your website.

I've seen a million top metal albums of 2012 list, but I thought the one on your site was really good and interesting in its picks.

I liked seeing the Dragged Into Sunlight record on there.  That is a great record and I agree with the reviewer that it's probably the most unsettling thing I heard all year.

Also nice to see Ensalved on there.  I will definitely be checking out the 3 or so records I was not familiar with that I saw on that list.

I thought they were the highlight of the night, really talented guitar players.
Ironaunt was okay at best, they kind of made me feel sleepy with a lot of their riffs, so I couldn't really get into them.
Mesuggah was a great show, but like I said before I liked the last song they played instrumentally the best.  The way over the top growling just doesn't add anything overall for me.

Should be a few more good shows comming up with Pig Destroyer at the Black Cat and High on Fire at the fillmore.

What's stopping you?  I'm sure y'all got metal down there in Tennessee.  If you don't have any friends that will go with you, just go anyway and make new friends.

One thing I love about metal shows is the crowds.  Yes, some people react aggressively to the music, but that is contained and can be avoided if you don't want to be a part of it.

To me metal crowds are just about the friendliest, most respectful rock and roll crowds I'm ever a part of.  There is a serious sense of community among metal heads.  Except people need to stop calling me "sir."

Speaking of metal in Tennessee, one of my favorite parts of Bonnaroo the last few years was the all-day metal tent they started doing.  Really pissed me off that they took that away last year.  That was a big part of why I bailed on Roo last year.
Title: Re: Heavy Metal!!
Post by: Ruckus on Feb 18, 2013, 02:53 PM
It's true sir.  The metal community is seemingly filled with nothing but kind and intelligent concert goers.  In fact, except for one encounter at a German club with some white power types almost twenty years ago, I've never had any bad experiences at metal shows.

Meshuggah is such a live force.  I was quoting my friend to Whippy about how three people side by side at a Meshuggah show could all be headbanging to different beats and none of them would be wrong.  It really is hard to wrap my mind around their rhythmic arrangements and brute power.

I have no idea where to find TN metal shows other than big stadium tours. I'm not as familiar with the genre. Although I do Kirk in this thread and sometime listen to the bands you discuss. It just isn't really my thing. I like my music to rock hard, but not quite metal hard. The TOOl suggestions you've thrown at me Whippy are probably as hard as I'll go with the occasional Megadeth or Metallica thrown in the mix. Still that crowd looks like a blast.

I Kirk a little bit here too, but don't listen to much metal, and the only metal-type show I've been to was The Sword, and I had a great time. Everybody there (at the front at least) was there to hear and see the music, not to talk. Added benefit: one can seldom hear the talkers at a metal show.

Yeah, it's funny, now that I think about it some more, I can't think of one bad crowd experience at a metal show, and I go to alot of metal shows.  People seem to save all those annoying concert behaviors we've been discussing for other kinds of shows.

Yeah in general the crowds are great, no big issue.  Every once in a while you'll see a few people who have indulged themselves a little too much and things might get dicey there, but nothing more than any other show I have been too.  Plus you have a lot less of people just trying to barge their way up front, unless they are going into the mosh pit, which is totally fine with me.  Plus the energy of the crowd, music, and band is always just so strong that you just feel the rush from it that you don't get from most shows.

Yes, Fully, Pallbearer is awesome, you can start there.

Regarding that metal cookbook, there better be at least one recipie in there for barbecued goat or that is a serious metal fail.  The cookbook looks cool, but I'm wondering if wouldn't be great for us of the vegetarian persuasion.

The cookbook got me thinking, though, wouldn't it be cool if there was a company that was the metal equivalent of Martha Stewart Living?  Something to make sure everything you do in life has a metal flair and style to it?

I'm thinking of starting such a company and calling it "Mr. Whippy Metal Living."  What do y'all think?  Do I have some potentail customers?  Martha would be an obvious role model, except for the incarceration part.

Hellbent for Cooking has 8 vegetarian and vegan mains recipes. It's pretty cool; the recipes are from actual musicians. I don't see any goat recipes but there are a number of lamb recipes

Bazillion Points is a good publisher, too.

Our awesome writer Ola Mazzuca, who started writing for us in highschool, did a series of metal food reviews in her Blasphemous Meals (http://www.hellbound.ca/tag/blasphemous-meals/) series. Please check 'em out!

Fully, I LOVE that you are considering checking out some aggressive music. I don't necessarily call myself a metal fan, but I definitely appreciate it.  I tend to love doom and sludge and stoner metal, myself.  There are definitely lots of awesome metal out there that has nothing to do with screechy guitar and effed up vocals.  If I hear of anything good hitting the Nashville area, I'll give you a heads up.

Fully - I recommend going to see Pallbearer.  They are a very good doom band from Little Rock, AR.

Like MrWhippy mentioned to me today, Black Tusk is playing at Rock and Roll Hotel in DC on 3/9, but since I am going to be out of town then, I am going to see them play in Fredrick (WTF) MD on 3/4.  I am assuming this will be a very intimate show (ie small), but they are at least headlining this one.

Plus I am actually checking out Pallbearer again this Saturday as their playing a headlining gig at Strange Matters in Richmond VA.  I guess that means that will be almost their entire cataloge since they just have an EP and LP to work off of other than new unreleased songs.  Fuck the Facts is also playing, haven't heard too much about them, but a good band name.

This is my favorite metal release of 2013 thus far.  Just crushing.  Mr. Tired Eyes, I think this would be right up your alley.

Portal - Vexovoid (full album) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhOBYz7I6og#)

Oh, the Portal album is excellent. It reminds me a lot of early Incantation, especially the Onward to Golgatha album. Just awesome, choking death metal.

On a completely different side of the metal spectrum now, I'd like to suggest people check out this new band, Anciients. I must admit that this is self-promo, as I work with this band professionally, but I would not if I didn't think they were good. I guess this means Pitchfork does too: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/14968-various-artists-falling-in-line/ (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/14968-various-artists-falling-in-line/)

Thanks alienlanes, I'll definitely check out Anciients.  I think they are playing in DC in the next month or two, as well.

Any chance you are heading back to Union Transfer in Philly for the Decibel 2013 tour in early June?  I'm strongly considering making the trek to Philly for that.  Napalm Death is on fire right now, I'd love to see them again.

OK, now this is my favorite metal release of 2013 thus far - Sky Burial by Inter Arma.

It is really musically varied and psychedelic for a black metal album.  Highly recommended for fans of Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc.

Really trying to decide if I want to do the Rockstar Mayhem fest, its been too long since I've seen mastodon, but other than Zombie I don't really care for the lineup overall and the pit tix are like 84 so not really sure that is worth it.  Anyone else having the same problem?

Yeah, just saw they posted the dates that of course are on MD Deathfest dates, horrible scheduling there on Baroness's part as I really wanted to check them out this go around to see how they are after the accident.

Also just saw that Kvelertak is comming to the R&R Hotel with Black Tusk and Cancer Bats in May and I saw that Dillinger Escape plan is headling the Summer Slaughter tour with Animals as Leaders but the dates and stops haven't been announced yet.

Sounds like it could be a decent summer of shows afterall.

Yeah, I was bummed about seeing the DC Baroness date happening during MD Deathfest as well.  Oh well, I'm sure there will be other chances to see them.  That triple bill in Philly of Baroness, Tombs, and Pallbearer is awesome.

MOTM, I'm definitely going the that Kvelertak/Black Tusk show at R&R Hotel if you want to come.  Maybe we could even talk Ruckus into it.

Also, the band I gushed about a few posts above, Inter Arma, is currently on tour and playing very small places.  MOTM, Inter Arma is playing at a venue I've never heard of in Alexandria (The Lab) on April 23.  I'm definitely going to that as well if you want to come.

Other good metal news is that Kylesa is putting out an new album and touring in May/June, along with White Hills, who are a great psych-rock band, and a couple other bands I don't know.

Whippy, I had just sent you something about Inter Arma 'cause I knew you were into them, but hadn't ever heard of that venue so wasn't sure if you had seen it as well, too funny.

I am definately interested in the BT show, would be awesome to see Ruckus if he makes it down, and might tag along for Inter Arma if my schedule works out.

I'm hoping Baroness makes an actual DC or Richmond stop later this summer or fall as I think one of the e-mails I saw was this was the first leg of a tour so hopefully they'll fit one of those two in on the second part sometime this year.

So wait, will some of you guys be going to MDF this year? This will be my fifth year in a row going to it, but my second year in a row working at it. I do some merch table time for Handshake Inc, the company that makes the MDF dvds.

Also, is there anyone from the Memphis area that is planning on going to the Scion Rock Fest on June 1st in Memphis? My band ANCIIENTS are playing there and I may just fly down with them to the show from Ottawa ON (it happens in the middle of a cross-Canada tour they are doing with another band, Skeletonwitch). It's a great show and it's free too

Info on the Scion Rock Fest show can be found here - http://scionav.com/event/566/Scion-Rock-Fest-2013 (http://scionav.com/event/566/Scion-Rock-Fest-2013)

Alienlanes, I will be at Maryland Deathfest all four days with a buddy of mine (not from this forum).  Manonthemoon will be there a couple days I think, and hopefully Ruckus will be there some as well.  Not sure if any other forum peeps are attending.

I'd be interested to know who you are really excited to see at MDF?  There are many names I don't know, but I haven't really started doing my research yet.  One of the things I'm particularly psyched about, though, is Bolt Thrower.  I can't believe I have a chance to see them.  Also you could put Sleep in that category as well.

Yoooooooo!  So that Kveterlak/Black Tusk show sounds interesting.  What's the date?  I finally got around to listening to the Pallbearer album from last year and it's awesome.  Also checked out Inter Arma and dug the guitar work and arrangements but the vocals were not my favorite.  They are supporting Baroness MDF weekend at Rams Head so maybe I'll check em out though the special lady friend refuses to ever spend a penny on Baroness again after Yellow/Green happened.

I'll be at MDF Sonar on Friday only.  We don't have Soundstage tix but may buy Sonar Sunday singles for Sleep and others.  We can put you up here as well Fully.

Can't wait to see Pelican

Sweet it'll be good to catch up. BT has that heavy sludgey sound I love and seem to be pretty easy going guys on stage which is always a plus for me.  The  new split 7, Iron Giants, is an awesome song, probably my favorite they do.

This may take a while, but here is who I am excited to see. I am working at the fest on Fri-Sun, so I may not be able to see all of these bands, but this is my wish list:

THURS
BOLT THROWER, Cobalt, Diephago

FRI
Benediction, Carcass, CONVULSE, Repulsion

SAT
Aosoth, Down, Melvins, THE OBSESSED

SUN
Manilla Road, Midnight, PAGAN ALTAR, Pentagram, Sleep

I don't think i will be able to go to the other venue, so I didn't list any of those bands.

This is a really cool offer, Alienlanes ,and as you know I took you up on it for the Silver Spring, MD show.  The bummer of it is that I missed Anciients as the bands ended up playing in a different order than on the show ad, and also from what was listed on the set times at the door.  The Silver Spring MD show was one of just a couple that had Exhumed also on the bill, and for whatever reason Exhumed went on second, and not first as they were listed everywhere to do.

The good news of it is that all this inspired me to check out the Anciients album, and it is great!  Seriously impressive debut, and the mix of musical and vocal styles works really well.  Hope they come back to DC soon, as I would definitely make it to the show.

See you soon at MDF!!!

Yes, and I apologize for that. I am not sure exactly what happened there. All the band has told me so far is that they got caught in traffic. Showed up super late and, as soon as they got there, were told to load their gear right on stage and that they would be on in 5 minutes.

I hope exhumed put on a great set as the second band though!

It is now May 2013, otherwise known as Mr. Whippy's best metal month ever.  Starting the month off tonight by seeing Clutch and The Sword, then Kvelertak and Black Tusk a bit later in May.

Then all four days of MDF, including Sleep, Bolt Thrower, The Obsessed, Pig Destroyer, Pelican, Down, Convulse, The Melvins, Converge, Weedeater, Pallbearer and so many more!

Alienlanes, looking very forward to meeting you at MDF, and also getting to hang out with Ruckus and Manonthemoon some of the days.

Plus you get Pallbearer which is always excellent on Thursday.

I am guessing Stage 1 is the big stage and stage 3 is labeled inside so I wonder if they are actually opening up Sonar for this?

Apparently they are not having any music inside what used to be Sonar (and is now a nightclub called Paparazzi or something) as there is no longer a stage in there.  The stage labeled as "inside" is actually going to just be a tent set up outside.  Strange setup.  I will be interested to see how this all works.

Pagan Altar
Sacred Reich
Manilla Road
Sleep
Pentagram
Venom

If anyone has recommendations for the pre-5 pm bands on Sunday, I'm listening.
Look forward to seeing some of you there.

Hey Bill!

Sounds like Brett and I will see you Sunday!

Hope you were not too set on seeing Carpathian Forest because they cancelled due to having visa problems and not being able to get into the country.

My buddy and I were talking about possibly arriving around 5 on Sunday, as we haven't been too drawn in by what we've heard from the bands playing early that day.  So I can't help you with recommendations.

MDF Day 1 was great, though missed most of Pallbearer due to getting caught in really bad traffic on the way to Baltimore.

So, we saw three full sets:

Abigail was a pretty run of the mill metal band from Japan, not real memorable.

Cobalt was one of the more interesting and awesome metal bands I've ever seen.

Bolt Thrower destroyed everything in their path.

Onward to Day 2 (with Ruckus!)

MDF Day 2 report:

Ambassador Gun - Decent grindcore band from the US.  Nice way to start the day but nothing too memorable.

Abumado Granujo - Grindcore band from the Czech Republic.  This set was just bizarre.  The band was not very good, and I don't know whoever thought it was a good idea to have long pre-recorded techno intros to grindcore songs, but I never want to hear something like that again.  Someone brought in tons of glowsticks and inflatable beachballs, and both were so hilariously out of place for this set.  Also, the mosh pit featured DC's famous metal chicken man, people dressed up as both ketchup and mustard, someone in a leather bondage mask, and someone dressed up as the devil.  It was more entertaining to watch than the band.

Convulse - Death metal band from Finland who has not really been active since putting out some records in the 90's.  Very solid and enjoyable set with some great guitar work.

Ingrowing - My buddy and I left Convulse a bit early to catch this band from the Czech Republic, and I'm so glad we did.  This set was fantastic.  Just a perfect set of somewhere at the intersection of death metal and grindcore.  The energy exploded when they ended their set with a Napalm Death cover, which was cool as well.

Benediction - Very old school British death metal.  This set was fine and kept me interested, but was pretty repetitive and ultimately pretty flat.  One of the lower points of the day.

Pig Destroyer - Typically awesome Pig Destroyer set.  I love these guys so much, and they never disappoint.  Grade A grindcore.

Repulsion - This set was awesome and probably the biggest surprise of the day.  I had seen these guys back in January at the Decibel 100th issue show, and they were good, but you could tell that they were a band that was being dusted off and was not a currently active unit (their first and only album came out in the late 80's).  Well, they must have practiced quite a bit in the interim, because they were so much more powerful and forceful this time.

Righteous Pigs - This was a very obscure reunion of a metal/hardcore band that was where Napalm Death's current guitarist got his start.  He's an amazing guitarist and it was great to see him, but this was a very strange set.  The singer of this band is an like the embodiment of every bad metal cliche.  As great as the music was, the singer really kept this from gelling into something great.

Carcass - This set was just incredible, and one of the best sets of metal I have ever seen.  I feel like this set was heavier beyond something I could have even imagined.  Mind = blown.

Pelican - I've been wanting to see these guys for a long time, so I'm so psyched that I finally got to.  Killer instrumental post-metal, and a great way to end the night.

Hanging out with Ruckus and Ms. Ruckus - Awesome.

Meeting Alienlanes - Fucking awesome.

Onward to Day 3 with manonthemoon.

I too am at MDF and am loving the music even if the weather has been awfully mixed. It was also great to meet my first fellow forum members yesterday, when Mr. Whippy came by the booth I was working at. It was really great to meet him and he also introduced me to Ruckus and his wife. I am hoping I will get to hang out with them all again later this weekend!

As for the music, here are my incredibly quick recaps for Thursday and Friday...

Thursday: First band of the weekend for me was Deiphago from the Phillipines. On album they sound like being in the middle of a hurricane and, unsurprisingly, their live performance was the same. Up next was Pallbearer, who was a mixed bag for me personally. While I loved the music, the vocals were really out of key/tune and kinda ruined it for me. I had been looking forward to seeing Japan's Abgail, who were next and loved their riff filled 80s thrash/NWOBHM stylings. I missed seeing Cobalt, as i actually couldn't get into the tent because of the rain, but I made sure I was inside for Bolt thrower, who were fucking amazing!

Friday: I spent a good part of the day working at the tent I am helping with for the weekend, so I didn't see as many acts as I would have liked. the first act I took in was Finland's Convulse, an old school death metal outfit which was right up my alley. the same can be said for Benediction, the next band I watched. It was their first time in the US since 1994 and while their style was simplistic I enjoyed it. I spent the rest of the night at the tent I was working, which thankfully was straight on to stage #1, so I had a great viewpoint for Repulsion (best I have seen them in the 3 times I have seen them) and Carcass (who ruled with the new line up)! After meeting Ruckus and hearing how excited he and his wife were to see Pelican I ventured into the tent to watch Pelican and really dug it. The band seems reinvigorated with their new guitarist.

Alright, let's see what Saturday brings!

It was great to meet you alienlanes.  Hope you enjoy the last two days.  I'm gonna look into Sacrifice.

Always good to frolic with the Whipster

We had a frickin' blast!  Convulse and Benediction were so so and the sound for Evoken in the tent was awful.  But Carcass was just unbelievable and it was a tough decision to skip out early to get a spot all the way up front for Pelican.  It was worth it.  They blew us away.

MDF Day 3 report:

Kommandant - This was just crazy and awesome.  All band members wearing gas masks, singer up on a podium fully masked and covered in white powder.  The music was heavy doom which fit the aesthetic perfectly.  Hopefully this picture does it a bit of justice:

Anhedonist - Heavy doom metal and a really great set from this young Seattle band.

Loss - Another heavy doom set, but not as musically interesting as the bands the came before and a little too slow.  Being on a bit of doom overload at this point, we left halfway through to check out something else.

Iniquity - Complex, technical death metal from Denmark.  Good but nothing too thrilling.

Weedeater - Heavy Southern sludge metal.  This set was awesome.  Dave Collins is such an insane human and so fun to watch.  He also gets such as amazing, heavy bass tone that really drives their sound.  He also pounded an insane amount of whiskey during this set.

The Obsessed - I'm not a big fan of Wino in other projects I've heard of his, so I didn't have much expectations for this reunion show of his first band The Obsessed.  This was my favorite thing I've heard from Wino, but still just not up my alley.  He's a good guitar player, but I'm just not that drawn in by him.  I know others really dug this set though, so they must see something I don't.

Aosoth - Killer French black metal.  Really great set.  Completely held my attention throughout.

Melvins - I've seen these guys many times over the years, dating back to 1993 or so.  I've always been impressed with their sets, but was super impressed with them this time.  They had the two drummer format they have been doing for the last few years, and unlike other bands that seem to have two drummers for absolutely no reason (Floating Action, Bright Eyes, etc.), the two drummers really adds something here.  Also King Buzzo is an insanely good guitar player.  This felt like the heaviest I've ever seen the Melvins, and it was great.

Revenge - I was not previously familiar with this band from Canada.  My buddy came up with a good description for their sound - "hate metal."  This was just incredibly abrasive and aggressive and I really enjoyed it, but not something I would want to revisit often, or maybe ever again.

Down - I was only casually familiar with Down, and was impressed with them.  Phil Anselmo is a great frontman and his band is top notch.  Glad I saw what I did of this, but left about halfway through to catch the second half of Vinterland.

Vinterland - Really excellent Swedish black metal.  More melodic than average for a black metal band, but still very heavy.  Great set.

Antaues - Another French black metal band that has some of the same members as Aosoth.  This was my favorite set of the day and probably my favorite set of straight ahead black metal I've ever seen.  It didn't really deviate from the black metal format, but they just nailed it.

Hung out with manonthemoon much of the day for his first visit to MDF.  Always a great time.

Not sure if these MDF reviews are interesting to many people, but might as well follow through with Day 4.

My MDF buddy and I enjoy the more extreme/experimental stuff, so we skipped many of the more traditional/straight ahead things today like Pagan Altar, Pentagram, and Venom in favor of other stuff.  Hopefully others can chime in on how those bands were.

Midnight - Very old school and not that interesting to me.  The black executioner masks the band all wore and the crowd member dressed as Jesus crowd surfing during the set were nice touches, though.

Gride - Czech Republic band that plays a really fun mash up of metal and hardcore sung in their native language.  Great set.

Iron Lung - We went over to the Baltimore Soundstage, MDF's indoor venue that hosted punk/hardcore bands all weekend, for this set.  Iron Lung is a guitar/drum duo that play a chaotic mix of hardcore and other styles all jumbled together.  Really enjoyable set.

Sleep - We skipped out on the bands playing in the slot before this to secure good spots for Sleep.  It was well worth it, as we got elevated spots on a curb in front of the soundboard and had a perfect sound and an unobstructed view for the best set of the whole festival.  Sleep absolutely killed it.  This band has  such a narrow range of what they do, but it is perfect as the just pummel that one thing like nothing else.  I was very surprised that they played a new song, and it was great.  I hope that means we will see more from these guys in the future, and that Matt Pike will take time away from High on Fire to keep Sleep going.

Ascension - Black metal band from Germany.  I loved this set.  They reminded me of a more aggressive version of Agalloch, with complex, suite-like songs.

Citizens Arrest - We headed back over to the indoor venue, and saw this band mostly due to wanting to get good spots for Converge who came on after them.  This was my least favorite set of the whole festival.  Boring, unoriginal, straight ahead punk.  It also didn't help that, after finishing their soundcheck on time, they came on 30 minutes late for no apparent reason.  This really seemed to suck the energy out of the set, as the crowd was really not engaged or responsive for their set.  Luckily, they didn't play for very long.

Converge - I love this band so much.  Besides always bringing an insane amount of energy, their skill and musicianship just blows me away.  Their set time got compressed a bit thanks to the stupid previous band going on so late, but it just served to ramp up the energy of their set and caused them to cut out some of the talking between songs.  Great ending to an amazing weekend.

I too like the recaps even though I haven't heard of a single one of these bands.

I'm hoping for a 'Roo recap along these lines in June.

I gotta go look up what a Grindcore band is.

Great Recaps Jon, was awesome hanging out with you and Michael on Saturday, just wish that the lines hadn't been so crazy on Sunday so I could of caught a couple of more bands.  It was also good to meet Alienlanes and I hope you were able to see decently from the tents during the Stage1 sets.

Overall I really enjoyed Anhedonist with their really great Doom sound, by far one of my favorites of the early going.

Weedeater was good old southern sludge/stoner metal at its best, plus the Duke did drink enough whiskey to kill a normal drunk.  I'm not sure how much of that JD handle he drank, but at the end of the Down set it was down to 1/4 of a bottle and the crazy part was he had 2 other bottles with him on stage.  Pepper from Down came out for a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover as well.

Melvins were really good, never been a huge fan, but their live show with the double drummers was awesome.  Plus they are good entertainers and know how to work a crowd.

Down was by far the best I have ever seen them, they were on fire.  Played pretty much all of their big ones from the first two albums with a couple from the newer stuff.  Eyes of the South and Bury me in Smoke were just epic.  Plus Phil was in a good mood and feeling pretty good as I have seen him in the past when his back was killing him and those weren't the best of shows.  He was really playing to the crowd trying to get everyone into it even, I think the years he has been doing this have really made him a mellow guy.  I was up front at the one back from the rail and everyone up close was into it.

I only caught two shows on Sunday, but they were both great.

Sacred Reich was more thrash/traditional metal, but the dudes were funny and knew how to work the crowd.  He tried to get the pit to be massive and at one point it was probably 40 feet long or so, the largest I have seen since Mastodon's a year back, even these two huge security guards joined in.  Really suprised at how much I liked this set.

Then Sleep hit the stage and it was F'ing amazing.  Was one back from the rail in front of Pike and those guys killed it.  The crowd was so into this, I have never seen so much crowd surfing going on.  This was by far the best concert experience I have had in a while, probably back to the 2nd time I saw Red Fang at Sonar, the crowd was just so into it and the energy was amazing.  So much headbanging, I now officially know what it is to have a bangover.  It was so funny that al was asking the crowd to smoke more to help the band.  The new song was really good, murky and a really nice riff from Pike going on toward the end as well.  Really hope this means that they might do another album and a tour at some point.  Was also stoked that they played an extra ten minutes as every other band got cut off when they ran over, but I guess the organizers knew better than to cut them off considering the crowd.

I heard they had problems with Venom at the end of their set due to them running over and that the police were called, but i had left right after Sleep as my body was done at that point, plus black metal isn't a big draw for me.

I will say this, most of the crowd was great, no issues anywere and I've said it before even a mediocre metal show or one that I don't like as it is not my style can still be awesome just based on the crowd energy.  I wish all music crowds were like these ones.

I went to MDF on Sunday.  It was my first time attending MDF and I hope to return next year for at least 3 if not all 4 days.

I got there a bit before 5 and checked out some merch indoors.  I didn't buy anything then (a mistake...more on that later).  I then saw Mr Whippy and we talked for a bit before I went over to see Pagan Altar.  Unfortunately I missed seeing manonthemoon and never got to meet alienlanes.

Pagan Altar was a very good UK doom act.  They were doing their music many years ago but I think it has only been issued/reissued fairly recently.

I then went to see Sacred Reich.  While I have seen many thrash acts before, this was my first time seeing them.  While they were good, I left their set a bit early as I wanted to try to get a tshirt or two before heading back for Manilla Road on stage 2.  I waited in a line at a vendor that had lots of good shirts.  The line moved fairly quickly until this one couple who treated merch buying like it was a new car purchase...they took forever!  As a result I had to leave the line to go catch Manilla Road.

Manilla Road are a band from Wichita, KS (which happens to be my mom's hometown) that started in 1977.  They play power/traditional metal and they are excellent.  I really enjoyed their set.

Then I was hungry so waited in line for a pulled pork sandwich and birch beer at Zombie Barbecue's stand.  The line moved slowly and MDF has very short setbreaks (sometimes none at all between stages 1 and 2) so Sleep started while I was waiting in line.  Luckily they were so loud that I could hear them.  I went over and watched them and loved their set.  This was my 2nd time seeing them as I saw them at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn back in 2010.  I went back to stage 2 and listened to the end of their set from there since I didn't want to be late for Pentagram.

Pentagram is a legendary doom band from the Baltimore/DC area that (as singer Bobby Liebling mentioned during their set) first started in 1970.  They were really good.  I only have 2 of their CDs thus far so didn't know all the songs they played.  I will be picking up more of their catalog.

I then went back to stage 1 for my last band of the festival, Venom.  Venom named their 2nd album Black Metal but they were really more of an influence on early thrash than early black metal.  While they were alright, I doubt I would go see one of their own headlining shows.  They are a trio from the UK and I kept comparing them to Motorhead (who I've seen twice).  Venom just doesn't compare to Motorhead in either songwriting or overall sound.  The early thrash bands also blew Venom away in terms of force and energy.  Venom was running long and there was much grumbling when the power was cut during the last song.  I was rather indifferent as I wanted to try to get a tshirt before driving to Philly (my place to sleep on Sunday night).

I went back to the same vendor from before.  I kept naming bands and he was out of my size.  Thanks a lot, slow couple!     Finally I asked him for a Hellhammer shirt in my size and he said it was the last one.  Phew.
Oh yeah...they were giving out free copies of Decibel magazine in the same building.  I had picked one up before Pagan Altar and had carried it around with me all day.  Then I set it down and forget it when I'm buying my tshirt.

I noticed one person all day wearing a band tshirt of a non-metal band.  It was a shirt from a 2011 Pogues tour.  The tshirt vendor that I mentioned had mostly metal shirts (and a bit of hardcore like Minor Threat).  He also had Johnny Cash which goes to show that The Man In Black has extensive cross-genre appeal.

There were major issues with getting out of the festival.  They didn't open enough gates for some time so it was really slow going to get out.  Then when they finally opened more space, we were streaming out and all of a sudden there's an altercation between a woman and a security guy.  Someone accidentally ran into my my left arm as they rushed over to get involved.  I don't know what precipitated the confrontation but I think that's why the police were called.  I walked away and back to my car to leave Baltimore.

I have this fantasy of heading down to Hopscotch to catch Sleep and Spiritualized then stopping by the Interlocken Fest thing in VA on the way home to catch the night where Neil Young and Crazy Horse headline.

The timing might actually work because Hopscotch is Thurs-Fri-Sat, and Interlocken goes until Sunday.  I don't think Interlocken sells one-day tickets, though.

Lord Dying out of Portland has their first LP release streaming at the above link.  Pretty solid stuff overall, definately some stoner rock influence mixed with black and more classic metal as well.  Caught them when they toured with Red Fang and they do put on a good live show.

MDF announced the first 10 bands for next year and is off to a really nice start.  Particularly psyched for Gorguts and Bongripper.

That festival looks pretty great.  I'm sorry I will miss it.

True story - I was once checked out at Tower Records in the Village by Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth.  It was NYE 1996 and I asked him directions on how to get to the PATH train to Hoboken as I was seeing Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's that night.

I should maybe clarify so that people don't think I'm any more demented than they already think I am that I don't listen to Regurgitate.  I only know of this album cover as I saw someone at MDF this year who was wearing a Regurgitate T-shirt that was this album cover.

Regarding that festival lineup that was posted, I'm surprised how few bands I know on it.  Of the bands I do know on it, Dragged Into Sunlight is probably the metal band I've never seen that I most want to see.  Well, either them or Portal.

With great new albums by both Carcass and Gorguts, it's turning out to be a pretty good year for death metal.

I sure hope Carcass comes back to the US for a proper tour after the small amount of club dates they are doing in Sept.

OK, now this is my favorite metal release of 2013 thus far - Sky Burial by Inter Arma.

It is really musically varied and psychedelic for a black metal album.  Highly recommended for fans of Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc.

Sounds like Black Sabbath are great on this tour from all accounts.  Bummed I couldn't make their show here.

This Thursday I'm seeing a double bill of Inter Arma and Gorguts.  Really psyched about that pairing as both bands have put out seriously brilliant records this year.

I think I remember you saying at MDF that you never really cared for any of Wino's bands.  I am probably going to make it to this show and wouldn't mind heading out after Pallbearer as I have never been that big a fan of Wino's stuff either.

Whippy took me to my first real metal show last night at Hopscotch Fest. I liked it more than I thought I would. I would definitely go again, although I have to say that Whippy helped with all his knowledge of what we watched. We saw Inter Arma, Evoken, and Sleep. I enjoyed the first two enough that I would go to another show. Sleep, however, blew me away!! It was just fucking awesome! Granted I've listened to them some before and thanks to Ruckus, I've been interested in Om-Al Cisneros' band. It was interesting to see how different what he does with Sleep although there is a little overlap. He does stuff with a bass that I've not seen before.

Was great to get some Fully time last night, and to see some great music together in Raleigh.  For me, though, The Breeders were just north of meh, but they were not the main draw at all.  The stuff we really came for (Spiritualized plus the metal bands) were great

Would have loved to have seen you, Bret. I may see you at a metal show in the future. Whippy, my dark overlord, still has much more to show me about this world of music. Plus there was the funniest guy beside us who got his hair caught in his tiny battery operated fan that he graciously shared with us before he started RAWR-ing along to the music. He was an excellent at the rawr, but I started getting really anxious that he was going to fall off the balcony because he kept leaning over it so far. I really enjoyed watching the crowd. It was awesome even though I was really sleepy and napped a little during Inter Arma and Evoken. I hadn't slept much this week and 24 hrs straight awake don't make me completely concious.

Pelican was great at MDF this year, as Ruckus can also attest to.

Some really good metal tours this fall including a couple great pairings, such as Inter Arma and Black Tusk as you mentioned.  Another great pairing is High on Fire with Kvelertak, who are on the road in November (with a DC date on 11/12 for us DC area metal heads).

It's a bummer that they are down to two original members, but they are playing an insane setlist.  Also, they have a great opening act, French metal band Gojira.

Thanks Jeff!  That's a serious gold mine.  In addition to the bands you mentioned, there are also sets on there by Neurosis, Yob, Melvins, Kylesa, Cult of Luna, Church of Misery, KEN Mode, and some other cool stuff as well.  Now I just need to clear a weekend or so on my schedule to watch it all.

Also, I guess by the lack of response no one else is catching the Slayer/Gojira tour.  Y'all are missing out, the sets by both bands I saw in Austin were amazing.  I wish  I could go see them again tonight here in DC, but I don't think it is to be.  Here's one pic from the Slayer set I saw last week.

A buddy shared this site with me... this link is for the Red Fang HellFest France show, but there are links to other bands you guys talk about... Graveyard, Pallbearer, Orange Goblin...

Enjoy!

I saw the NYC show on November 27.  I thought it was really good.  It was weird to see Slayer without Jeff Hanneman (RIP), but Gary Holt of Exodus fame is excellent and did a great job.

Thanks Bill for posting that Decibel list.  What a great year 2013 has been for metal releases, and so much I still haven't heard.

Congrats to Alien Lanes for Anciients ending up on the Decibel list, very cool.

Some good package tours have been announced for 2014 so far, with the Decibel tour featuring Carcass and Gorguts, and tours of Between the Buried and Me/Deafheaven/Intronaut and Russian Circles/KEN Mode/Inter Arma.

Agreed.  There's also Amon Amarth/Enslaved/Skeletonwitch.  I hope to see a show on that tour.

Yep, that's another good one, Bill, though I was pretty unimpressed with Enslaved when I saw them.  I'd like to see Amon Amarth, though.

In other news, this is awesome.  Someone needs to do the same thing for Tool:

The only thing I really know about Mercyful Fate is that it was the band that King Diamond was in.  I'm not a big fan of King Diamond's solo stuff, so I haven't been too inspired to check out Mercyful Fate.

There is a current Swedish metal band I like a good deal called In Solitude that is often compared to Mercyful Fate, for what that is worth.  In Solitude put out a very good album last year called Sister.

I don't know if there are other Deafheaven fans on here, but they put out what it is in my opinion one of the best albums of the year with Sunbather.

Here's a link to a black metal makeout mix put together by Deafheaven's vocalist.  If anyone gives it a try, please report back.

Now that I'm obsessed with Sunbather, I'll have to listen to this too. I can't imagine black metal make out music, but I could never imagine that I'd get so excited about this album either.

Also, did you see that Deafheaven is playing in Nashville in Feb?

Melissa is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It is their debut album, it came out in 1983, and it is just as incredible today as it was upon its release.

Their second album Don't Break the Oath is also very good, but Melissa will always be my favourite MF album

Anyway, you can test-drive Melissa on youtube before you buy it. Here's a link to the whole album. I am going to go listen to it right now

I know this is an ultra-late reply but WOW! What a show to go to for your first metal show! Glad to hear you loved it

Whippy and Ruckus even have me exploring metal bands, Sean. So far, I like Deafheaven, love Russian Circles and Electric Wizard. I don't care for Carcass, and the jury is still out on Agalloch. I mostly don't enjoy the vocals. I already loved Sleep way before I saw them last fall.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been surprised by how much I am enjoying this music. It has a complexity that rivals symphonic music in many ways. It also isn't as much of a one trick pony as I had always assumed it was. Way too stereotypical I was in what I thought metal was. I'm just beginning to skin the surface of what seems to be a multiple different styles of this genre of.music.

I've been meaning to check out Vhol and the new Exhumed album for a while now.  Also interested in Pentagram (the Chile one) after hearing you talk about it in Mexico. Glad to see Motorhead put out a quality release.

Ruckus, it's not the first time I've said this to you, but you need to check out the Gorguts album.

I don't know how I've missed Voivod all these years.  I had heard their name for a long time but never really checked them out, the new record is fantastic.

I had never been that impressed with Exhumed before, but the new record is great.  They make such good use of having two vocalists with pretty different vocal styles.

I'll definitely be checking out the remaining couple records on your list that I haven't heard yet.

Been streaming the new Mastodon on I-tunes and while its not really a heavy album at all, its IMO definately better than the Hunter and a rocker none the less.  Still some major riffs and probably better lyrics than most of their work, but was hoping for a little more heaviness, but I'll say it has been growing on me with every listen.   :drum:

Yes, Unlocking the Truth are awesome, and not just because they are all like 12.

I've seen them twice: at Fun Fun Fun Fest last fall and at Coachella this year.

Saw them the other night opening for QOTSA.  Dug them a lot.  Have great potential.

A friend mentioned this band the other day, not really heavy metal, more liek hard rock.

Royal Blood- 2 piece band from the UK

Sad news on the metal front again.  Athon of Black Tusk has passed away after a motorcycle accident in Savannah.   , RIP.

I'm really digging the new Mutoid Man album.  I'd be surprised if it didn't end up in my top ten at the end of the year.  If you don't know, it's Stephen Brodsky from Cave In, Ben Koller from Converge, and Nick the sound guy from Saint Vitus in Brooklyn.

I'm also really enjoying the new Vattnet Viskar.  What are some other great metal albums that have come out this year?

Ones I have liked this year:

Poisoned Alters - Lord Dying
Luminiferus - High on Fire

Solid:

Goliathan - Weedeater
Shadows - Valkyrie

Have heard that Mutoid Man's new one was good and have meant to check it out since I caught Stephen Brodsky open for the Mountain Goats in Philly earlier this year and liked his set.

Not a metalhead by any means, but this new Black Breath album sounds pretty good.
