Title: Forecastle 2015
Post by: EverythingChanges on Jan 12, 2015, 11:38 AM
I think there's a 75% chance of MMJ

I also I have a strong feeling that Strand of Oaks and FJM will make the list.

I think there is a 100% chance. I don't think "insider" on inforoo has ever been wrong in many years. If she says they aren't on the farm, I don't think they will be.

That said there is a first time for everything and I hope this is it because I would much rather see them at bonnaroo than forecastle.

It's one or the other, correct?

Jack White was headlining both last year. I think both festivals are completely different, and MMJ should be at both. I personally don't want to be trapped at bonnaroo with no shower for three days. That's why I prefer Forecastle. The drive is shorter too.

Im hoping the Dead Weather headline some stuff this year.

I dont think it depends on Bonnaroo at all.  At Bonnaroo MMJ wouldn't be one of the headliners, and at Forecastle they would easily be in the top 3.  That makes for two "different" kinds of festivals rather than two festivals headlined by the same act.

She didn't say they wouldn't be just not in the Top 4 billing

I really hope they aren't at forecastle. they haven't played louisville since their last forecastle set. I'd much rather see a hometown show, which would last more than 2 hours

You don't think they could do both? Start their tour with lousiville and then come back in mid July? Also if they're at forecastle, maybe they would have a headlining set and then a late night show at the palace or something akin to what string cheese did two years ago.

I'm pretty sure Forecastle will book them. All of their fans are pretty addiment on making it happen. Honestly, I haven't seen any other headliner save for MMJ that excites me this year. If MMJ isn't there, I hope Forecastle books something different and exciting.

I won't claim to know anything, but history would suggest that won't happen. they've only played louisville 4 times over the last 7 years. it seems like they don't play here often, because when they do its a big deal. the whole 9 yards and what have you

All I know is that I will be in Louisville whenever they are.

I'm actually not overly excited about Bonnaroo's lineup. There's some great stuff on it, but I sort of like going back to my hotel or partying at a bar after each night. Showering is a great thing! That lineup is good, but I've seen a lot of those acts recently, and I hope Forecastle strays from the trend this year like they tend to do.

best option is a separately ticketed MMJ Late Night Forecastle show at Yum Center from 1am - 4am  - drinks are served in Louisville til 4 anyways!

The only fest I care to go to is Solid Sound. Nothing else really interests me except for maybe Mountain Jam. Well that and Newport but damn is Newport expensive. Other than  that just give me some proper tour dates already!

There is a lot of people that think that MMJ will play Shaky Knees this year. Jim played solo in the rain the first year.  They announce at noon Tom. It's a great festival in Atlanta for those that have never been. I expect a pretty solid line up!

Go through that link. Everyone on there seems pretty sure that DMB and MMJ are headlining this year. If that's the case, I hope MMJ gets at least one long set and Dave plays on Sunday night so we can go home early.

I'm thinking MMJ DMB and a hip hop headliner followed by Ryan Adams, Decemberists, strand of oaks, father John misty, Sturgill Simpson, Portugal the Man (or Weezer), hopefully dr dog, jeff tweedy

Other than MMJ, I hope the headliners are different.

I think forecastle would be surprised at the back lash they would get if they booked Dave.
Title: Re: Forecastle 2015
Post by: LBSUNFLWR on Jan 15, 2015, 09:06 AM
If Ryan Adams and MMJ play the same weekend here I will be thrilled beyond belief.
Throw in FJM or real estate or any number of smaller acts I have seen showing up on other festival lists and I will be super excited for Forecastle.

And you're right, no matter which night DMB plays they will be the closer that night, so I can leave early!!

truth is I wasn't into any of the headliners last year but still was happy with the overall line-up. DMB just seems like an odd fit for Forecastle to me...

you werent happy with jack white, beck, and outkast?  wow, what would make you happy?  i thought last year was the best lineup theyve hever had top to bottom.  now having mmj and wilco as two of the three headliners was huge for me personally, all in all, last years lineup was bigger and better.

and a big HELL NO to dmb
Title: Re: Forecastle 2015
Post by: LBSUNFLWR on Jan 15, 2015, 09:22 AM
I'm not into Jack White. Watched the first few songs of his set but left early that night. Not really into Outkast but my bf is and I liked their set, ended up knowing more songs than I thought I would.

Beck was my favorite of those 3 Headliners and we did stay for his set. I was more excited last year about Ray LaMontagne, Jason Isbell, Band of Horses, Jenny Lewis etc.

also, the first year I lived in Louisville and went to Forecastle the headliners were MMJ and Wilco! Hard for anything to compete with that in my book!

im a big rock n roll head, that being said, jack white was one of the best shows ive ever seen.  thought outkast was a great set as well and beck, well thats been a life long quest to see him and he did not disappoint one bit.

i also could not get over just how much fun beck was.  not necessarily an attribute i am usually looking for at a show, but damn was he a ball to see live.

He really was. Wasn't sure what to expect and he was better than I would have thought too! The only Beck album I ever really listened to was Sea Change.

I agree with Ryan, last years line up was the best they've ever had. Also, MMJ and Wilco are my two favorite acts by miles, and I still liked last year better than 2012.

As far as this year, I havent heard DMB, but I have repeatedly heard MMJ. I never really trust anyone in Louisville about Forecastle though. Its usually just hot air coming out of peoples face holes.

If DMB plays I really hope he closes it out, because I'm usually dead tired by the end of Sunday anyway. (though Beck rejuvenated me last year)

Forecastle linked an article to their FB that says to expect a lineup drop by the end of January.  It usually takes them until the beginning of March to drop the lineup.  What do you all think?  I'm guessing there is some merit to that claim because Forecastle posted it to their FB.   Even though the article is 3rd party.

Nice find! That would be CRAZY if they dropped their lineup then, pretty much six weeks ahead of schedule. Then again, Bonnaroo announced its lineup over a month earlier than usual, so maybe AC Entertainment is just dropping their lineups as quickly as possible this year. AC still has three other fests to announce (two in unknown locations, one in Toronto) so maybe they want to put their established brands out there first and then announce the new ones when they'd normally be announcing Bonnaroo, Forecastle etc.

Verrrrrry interesting either way. Man, I love festival lineup drop season.

Pretty sure the first clue is Portugal. The Man!

Man of many men = Portugal. The MAN consists of many men in the band.
Hail from the land of red and green = Portugal's flag colors
Painted rivers = lyrics from an older one of their songs I believe.

I know this theory has been thrown around already, but before I heard each part broken down like this, I thought it was going to be Weezer. I'd much prefer Portugal!

Gaslight Anthem seems to be the second clue. I checked them out on Spotify and didn't really care for what I heard. That's okay though, a festival needs some duds because I can't see every act!

dmb isn't all bad -- the vibe mid 90's was very similar to a jacket show at least near the stage there's always going to be jokers in the lawn who came just to party at any show.

And MMJ is on both Dave's record label and now signed to the artist management group formed by his management team so there's that.

I was lucky to be in dmb's fanclub when MMJ opened for them and as a result my first jacket show was in a reserved seat front row on the rail right in front of Carl I had their albums but hadn't seen them live and that was a very special experience for me so I thank Dave for that!

Sucks that he will take up a headlining spot, but I didn't like Outkast last year, and I still had a great time.  I think Jacket is another headliner.  The question is whether the third one will be great or not.

Forecastle is a smaller festival when compared to Bonnaroo or something of that caliber.  DMB has a bigger following than MMJ (who I think would headline Forecastle).  Over 3.2 million people like Dave on FB.  His music isn't horrid, but it is really dull.  And for some reason, a bunch of people seem to love him.  He just fits that Sunday headliner spot for Forecastle.

Haha yeah... Don't worry though, it looks like it's some rapper. There's a picture of a crown with the king thing. Apparently the crown is from big k.r.i.t. Or something. I don't like what I heard of him on spotify, but at least he won't take a headlining spot!

yeah I would be willing to bet that a 3rd headliner would be a Hip Hop or EMD act

I kind of hope not. I'm not big on either one of those genres and I already don't want to see DMB. 2013 for castle had Avetts, String, and Black Keys, so maybe not.

I'm hoping the third headliner is a big surprise for this festival season, regardless of whether I enjoy it or not.

I still feel like Strand of Oaks, Father John Misty, and/or Dr. Dog will show up.

I think they should have Radiohead to make up for DMB!
Radiohead and MMJ 2 nights back to back!!  :cheesy:

I'd love that. And Radiohead can be sort of electronica right?!

I just have a feeling the third headliner will be a huge get. Hope I'm right.

Here's the list of what we can expect come Tuesday:

Portugal. The Man
MMJ
The Word
DMB
First Aid Kit
Cold War Kids
Shovels and Rope
Gaslight Anthem
Big K.R.I.T.

I think that's all of them so far. I'm only excited about MMJ, and Portugal. Maybe First Aid Kit will grow on me. Cold War Kids seem alright. The Word is an instrumental southern church gosspel super rock jam group. Robert Randolph is pretty cool, but I'm not into their style of instrumental, I don't feel like their songs have enough weight without words unlike some other instrumental bands that do. The rest I will probably avoid. I still have high hopes for Tuesday. It'll be weird if I only end up going one day.

This has absolutely nothing to do with anything, but it would not shock me to see Joan Jett on the lineup. She's touring all year with the Who, except for a mysterious gap in July and August -- prime festival season! Would love to her rock the waterfront!!

I'm not sure how I would feel about that yet. It would be cool I suppose. I'd rather see Springsteen as a legacy act or Neil. Rush would be awesome (but not something id ever expect forecastle to book).

Unfortunately, I'd put the chances of Neil playing Forecastle this year at zero and the odds of Springsteen not much better. I'm not talking a headliner legacy act, I'm talking a 2014 Dwight Yoakam type legacy act.

I know neither one would headline this year. Joan isn't headlining status? That's good at least. I have no idea who will headline this year beyond Dave and MMJ.

There is zero word on any Springsteen tour plans for 2015. I would love to see him at Forecastle but I just read an article today featuring Nils Lofgren, and he hasn't been told anything about a tour, and has no idea of Bruce's plans.

If Bruce does decide to tour, I'd say he'd follow the itinerary of past summer tours, and be playing Stadiums in Europe most of the Summer, and hitting the States by around August if we're lucky. JMHO.

I thinks it's definitely the word. They even have a song called keep your lamp trimmed and burning. It's a super group. Three of them are brothers, Robert Randolph brings the pedal steal, and the other guy brings the keys.

So jacket and modest headlining? If no Dave, who else? The clue today may point to Wilco, which I would be pumped for. Think they'd headline or take the spot right below the top 3?

though I would be thrilled, I think it's a long shot we'd have MMJ and Wilco again being that it was both of them just a few years ago. But if it were, I'd think Wilco would get a headlining spot over Modest Mouse. I've never seen them and only heard good things about MM so that would be cool...surely cooler than Dave Matthews!

Can't wait for this announcement, will be checking all day!!

Like Sam Smith or not, the guy has been headlining stadiums all year, had number one hits (now officially co-written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne) and will likely kill it at the Grammy's in a couple weeks. This guy is a star. Not one I'm down with mind you. But he will sell tickets.

...I think I saw on the national news (with Brian Williams) and heard on the Bob and Tom radio show that Sam Smith is a music thief. I may be wrong on this, but...why would we (Louisville area resident speaking/typing here) want "his kind" around "these parts" on what is supposed to be a celebration of music, art, and activism...not bubble gum pop thievery...?...? Plus, that song he co-wrote with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne isn't all that great...all due respect to Tom and Jeff, of course...

guy I sit next to at work showed me an article that said whoever wrote sam smiths song for him, said they never heard the Tom Petty song but they agreed that it sounded like it and so they ended up paying TP some money. I don't think Tom Petty seriously had anything to do with sam smith's song...

Not just saying this bc I live in Louisville, and I do have the luxury of going home to my own house each night...but I have been twice and been extremely impressed with the way things are handled! It's on the beautiful waterfront too! But the little things like: a lot of bathrooms (spot-a-pots) that weren't too awful, even on Day 3. Plenty of food and drink of all kind. trash cans and recycling everywhere along with people who cleaned up everything including cigarette butts on the ground. Easy walking distance between all the stages! just all around a well put together festival!!

think he's more of a pop star? I really don't know. But they can't have all the same music and so I am ok with it. Just amazed that someone I had not ever heard of, and who apparently has only one album out could get the top billing over MMj or Widespread Panic...but whatever.

Maybe MMJ will do a late night show the night Sam Smith plays and we can all leave early! :) Here's hoping they do a late night, and/or Panic too!

I'm pleased with today's announcement. and hope some of the yet-to-be-announced bands are ones I would like too!

So...you mean this Sam Smith character is the type who doesn't even write his own songs...!?!?

I guess he has a place at the festival though. One of the regulars who comes on the Bob and Tom show stated that the ripped off song of his is actually a "panty dropper", therefore it is important to the younger crowd who may be trying to pick up "some"... or get some "dropped" in their laps ... I don't care about all that. I'm married and only listen to music I enjoy. My days of having to put on a tune to turn the girls on are over. However, we do put on some mellow stuff from one of the Directv music channels when we are... I guess I sort of understand...

Well, if you or anyone else needs a "Panty Dropper" in the future, look no further than Mr Marvin Sease. This would be an over the top Jacket cover (in the most outrageous way only they could pull of)

I will be passing this year even with MMJ headlining.  The overall lineup seems kind of weak to me.  Or should I say, there are a lot of quality acts, just not enough to make it worth the money I would drop on tix and hotel and travel for the weekend.

I would rather hold out and spend my money seeing as many tour dates as possible and hopefully 3 nights in Colorado as well...

Sam smith sucks. Period.

Jacket, tweedy, modest, cage, tallest, St. Paul, houndmouth, Portugal, and maybe Conor's punk band are all great. Enough to get me there. There's also 10-15 more bands to be added. Give me dr dog or built to spill and I'll be stoked. This lineup is stronger in the mid to high tier than last year IMO.

Again, Sam sucks.

FORUM REALITY CHECK: Sam Smith is bigger than MMJ, even in their hometown. Like it or not...he is. Festivals need to sell tickets, and ohh boy does he sell tickets. Sam Smith will sell more tickets than MMJ, and that is why he is listed 1st. He will also bring in a different crowd than the Forecastle norm which will ideal lead a different demographic to the fest, and get those people back to future fests. Its just the facts.

Everyone chill...MMJ is gonna headline one of the 3 nights. Can't ask for much more, can you?

Made reservations today. We're in!!! Jacket & Panic, FUCK YEAH!!!! That's my kind of festival and i hate festivals. Based on the vibe in the forum, it seems to me Forecastle is already the exception when it comes to fests. If Jim James gets on stage with Panic I'll freak the fuck out. Hee hee. Oh, and Sturgill Simpson!!!! I'm wicked curious about a handful of other bands I haven't seen but several friends whom I respect their musical tastes like. And based on y'all we should expect more artists to be announced? Well, hope I don't have issues getting our tickets from the beach in Mexico.

Sam Smith shouldn't be #1.  I'm all for grabbing an act that will bring the masses, but this dude has 1 album out and I read somewhere he doesn't write some of his music.  How can he headline with 1 album.  He just doesn't fit this festivals vibe.  I'm not really into Widespread either, but Jacket makes up for the other two headliners for me.

This lineup really is great.  Especially when you consider that Forecastle has to add at least 10 more bands (comparing to last year's lineup).  I went through some of the bands I haven't heard of.  A lot of them have got me interested.  Twin Peaks is great.

Any chance that Dr. Dog, FJM, Built to Spill, Strand of Oaks, or Foxygen will be added?

This lineup needs THE DOG.

Also, I know Houndmouth is big in Louisville (and I love them), but why are they so high on the bill?  I'm thinking Forecastle has another second tier band or two to throw in above Houndmouth.  I would assume all three headliners last year were more expensive than the ones this year, so they have to have more money in the budget to tag some great second and third line stuff.  Anyone think it is possible for Jacket to get an extra late night show at the Palace or something?

Even without the additional adds, it could look like this:

Friday:
Portugal > Modest > Sam Smith

Saturday:
Houndmouth > Cage The Elephant > My Morning Jacket

Sunday:
Tallest Man > Tweedy > Widespread Panic

That's pretty solid.  I'll just relax during WSP (not my thing) and hit the town or head to a late night show for Sam Smith.

Houndmouth is #6 on the bill this year.  Band of Horses was #6 last year.  I like Houndmouth more, but BoH is much bigger, so there has to be larger bands to come.  What do you all think?

Did anyone hear the WFPK broadcast today?  People on FB are talking about that they mentioned something about Pearl Jam headlining? Did they mean in a future year, or this one? Because that would be huge.

Also, check out Alvvays.  They sound pretty good!

I started thinking about some possible sit-ins. Tweedy and MMJ one way or another!
Luther Dickinson and Panic!!! That's what I'm hoping for! Hope they are scheduled on the same day!

Looking forward to discovering some new stuff between now and then as well. And hoping for a few more good announcements!

I was also thinking about Father John Misty as a possibility. He is on some other festivals. That would be sweet!

"In the United States, In the Lonely Hour debuted at number two with first-week sales of 166,000 copies in the July 5th edition of the Billboard 200 behind Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence which sold 182,000 copies that week.[28] The album held at number two the next week selling 67,000, bringing the set's total sales in the United States up to 233,000.[29] By the year's end, the album achieved platinum status and had shifted 1,210,000 copies in the United States, making it the third best-selling album of 2014 behind 1989 by Taylor Swift and the Frozen soundtrack.[30][31][32] The following day, 18th December, the album had surpassed the one million mark in the UK, selling around 1,007,000 copies by midnight, becoming just the second artist album in the UK to sell over a million copies a month after Ed Sheeran reached that plateau with his x album, also becoming the only artist to sell one million copies of an album in the U.S. and UK in 2014.[33] In addition, Smith sold 2.8 million singles from the album while the album was streamed 87 million times and viewed on UK video streaming sites 48 million times.[33]"

Sam Smith might stink, but I'm really surprised by the fact no one "gets" why he's billed at the top.

Also, there is enough great stuff on this line up, that I'm not going to let one act ruin it for me.

That they are! Was sad to not go to playa this year, but there was no way to do it and still get to OBH. I'd have to fly right from the Dominican to Cancun. So not in my abilities. It sure made watching all my friends go to the DR without me easier knowing I get OBH. They think I'm crazy to choose Jacket over Panic, but in time they'll learn. But in the big picture getting both bands at the same festival is so freakin' yummy to me.

That's the root of the problems with festivals. You can't please everyone. And at the same time, the promoters need to look at the bottom line. for the rare times I go to festivals, I appreciate the times I'm not drivin' to see everything being played. I need that downtime.

That leads me to a question. What is the entry and re-entry policy of Forecastle?

Everything at Forecastle is pretty lax. You can come and go as you please. A couple of years ago you couldn't, but they changed it over the last 2 years.

It really is a great festival too. I'm not just saying that because I live here. Its relaxed, the crowds are manageable. There are a lot of people there because its something do to, which is great because that means a small percentage of people are your competition on getting a good spot. MMJ will be probably the only band that will play this year that you'd have to show up a couple hours early to get in the first couple rows.

They only way I can see myself being more into a line up this year is if the MMJ @ Solid Sound rumors are true. I would rather Sam Smith be replaced with a "classic act" like Roo always has, but I'm not mad about not liking 1 headliner. There is no headlining EDM or Folksy-mumford-avett-hey-ho band so I'm happy. I'd take a goofy pop-star over either of those any day.

I'm so with you. It def makes the festival more attractive to me with no big EDM or one of the many irish-folksy bands. For me Sturgill is HUGE plus. I'm very curious about Portugal. Went VIP last year, and I don't really think the difference in cost is justified. HOWEVER, it's still pretty awesome. Just not really necessary. You get some sweet bathrooms with no lines, a nice chill spot with lots of room and privacy and a little cut out at the main stages for VIP viewing. For the headliners I didn't even use the VIP fenced-off section though, the views are on an angle and it got pretty packed. Give me room to groove any day. During the day it was pretty sweet though, could get within 20 feet of the stage no problem.

Cold War Kids are awesome live. They play a high energy set and have tons of good songs which makes them an ideal festival band with shorter set times. I saw them Friday in Mpls and they killed it. Very different than MMJ, but good music is good music.

I still think there's a chance for Wilco to show up. Houndmouth is way too far up on the list of artists, there has to be something coming larger than them. That last clue that was for tweedy said "the son joined us first" or something like that. What if wilco is coming in the second wave? Thoughts?

I would say its definitely possible that that is an accident. I can see why they would hold it back for another round of artists, though. On Bandsintown whenever Tweedy announces a show it says Wilco Announces a Show @ Tweedy. So it could be confusion

EDIT: upon reading that clue, I don't think wilco will be added.

You're probably right about this Sam Smith character being "bigger than MMJ", but will he still be around in say...16 years...that's the age of MMJ at present. I seriously doubt it. I believe the "outrage" comes from the fact that he only has one album and one (maybe two) "hit" single(s), so...how in the world could he score a headlining spot at this supposed "independent and progressive" style festival? I mean really?!? Sure he will bring in "new blood/money" and possible returns to the festival in subsequent years, but they're not hurting for an audience at Waterfront Park. Each year outdoes/outsells the previous one. Last year and the year before that were far bigger in terms of an attendance than the year My Morning Jacket curated and headlined (2012). I was there that year and again in 2013 to see Jim perform. I guess I'm just a bit greedy and selfish. I had originally planned on going to all three days/nights, but the acts are mostly unknown to me (I've done some "research" on bands I thought I might be interested in for previous years so as to make it worth my while/money and only checked out the ones I liked or sort of liked). With that being said, the headliners were my saving grace. When I went to all three days of the 2013 Forecastle Festival, I had a pretty good time discovering acts like Old Crow Medicine Show, The String Cheese Incident, The Black Keys, The Avett Brothers (already liked Jim James and Robert Plant), but I'm not feeling it for this one. It would be cool to see Widespread Panic, but I think I'll just get the single day ticket to see MMJ...unless there are some killer bands added...and that's unlikely to happen (for my musical tastes). I hope all of you people planning to make it a full weekend have a fantastic time. That's what really matters. It's the music! That's what matters the most! If you like the bands/acts, go see them. I'll be OK with just the one day's worth. Besides, MMJ will be playing more shows that I'll make my way to anyhow.

My exact thoughts.....

I think everyone needs to chill about the headliner. Lets look at past headliners...

2010:Smashing Pumpkins, Widespread Panic, Flaming Lips
2012: MMJ, Wilco, Bassnectar
2013: String Cheese Incident, Avett Bros, Black Keys
2014: Jack White, Outkast, Beck

I don't know about you, but who cares if its Bassnectar,Sam Smith, Smashing Pumpkins (that was probably the worst show I've ever seen), or even 3 headliners that you like but are mediocre (2013). 2014 was the best headliner year all around, and this year MMJ is on the list (we're talking on an MMJ forum right now, btw).

Its ONE ACT. And I'm really surprised by the lack of love for the line up on an MMJ fan forum. This year is more mmj-ish than the year that mmj curated the line up.

MMJ
Modest Mouse (!!!!!! I'm not even  a huge fan, but !!!!!)
Desaparecidos (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you don't know, look it up)
Tweedy (!!!!!!!!)
Sturgill Simpson
Diarrhea Planet
Portugal. The Man
Tallest Man
Shovels and Rope
St Paul
The Lone Bellow
People Under The Stairs
Jeff The Brotherhood
White Reaper
Shovels and Rope

And then there are all these bands that I don't care about, but I'm sure some of you all do:
WSP
Houndmouth
The Word
First Aid Kit
Gaslight Anthem

And then theres Cage The Elephant. I'm sorry, theres nothing I can say that will justify that. It's just one act. We'll get through it.

Also remember, there will be more bands announced. In 2013 Robert (f'ing) Plant got added late. There is so much potential left, its only January!

Oh, and its not just about the music. I'm sure after 10 years of being in more and more debt from the festival and living with his parents, JK is probably happy to sell some tickets. He's gotta make a life for himself and his employees, too. The music industry is an industry, too.
Title: Re: Forecastle 2015
Post by: EverythingChanges on Jan 31, 2015, 12:06 PM
I've not complained about the lineup save for Sam Smith. I also don't care for WSP either. But yes having jacket as a headliner is better than having three mediocre headliners. I think this year's lineup is fantastic. I'm excited about all of the second tier bands (I've never been excited about all of the second tier bands before). And JACKET. Modest is awesome. Cage has tons of energy on stage and will be fun to see, and houndmouth & tallest man are great adds. Tweedy will be amazing. Especially if he plays some wilco tunes solo like he has been. Even the undercards that I've never heard of are excellent. Conor's punk band is a little too hardcore for me, but it's Conor so that's great. Especially if he plays with MMJ.

With all that said, I'm still going to complain about having a headliner that wasn't even a thing half a year ago. He has 1 album and he's top on the bill. The dude isn't even a musician, he's an entertainer. I feel the same way about him as I do about Katy Perry. The only difference is Katy Perry has a nice rack to compensate for her shitty music. I do not like Outkast, but I feel like Outkast was a worthy headliner for a festival like this. I feel like Sam Smith was plucked from some Pop radio station.

I love JK and everything he has done. This festival is literally the only festival I care about going to. It's perfect in execution, size, and scale. The location is great for me too. For this reason, I'll always happily go and I'll enjoy the hell out of it when I'm there. I know JK and everyone else at the festival need to make $$ but they could have booked another headliner that would bring in just as many tickets and please the fans who go every year that have helped put this festival on the map. I don't think anyone on facebook ever asked for Sam smith as a headliner, and most everyone now seems to dislike him. I just feel like his fan base is so different from the fanbase that will go to forecastle. You take people who listen to top 40 and have them look at this lineup. They will be stoked for Sam Smith and not know a single other band there. That may sell loads of single day passes, but I just don't feel like he is such a huge $$ grab that everyone thinks he is. Who knows maybe I'm wrong. I've just yet to see any enthusiasm for him from anyone yet.

I agree.

He was plucked from a  pop radio station, so it's good you all feel like that. I guess at this point you could continue to complain (as you've stated you will) and provide everyone with that infectious negative energy, or you could just be happy that the line up rules and the festival rules.

BTW...
Governor's Ball: DRAKE, DEADMAU5
Coachella: DRAKE, AC/DC (ha)
Bonnaroo: KENDRICK LAMAR, DEADMAU5
Hangout: ZBB, SKRILLEX
Wakarusa: MAJOR LAZER

so, Forecastle screwed us by having pop/dance/shitty headliners, huh?

Also, BTW... Only festival that's booked him in the US. Pretty impressive IMO.

If ya don't know by now, fests aren't for music fans, anymore. Last year at Forecastle, all but 3% of the people roam from stage to stage taking selfies. They have to grab pop headliners and for main stay fests like Jazz fests--they have to keep pulling out oldie but goodie classics -Elton, stevie, etc. Sam Smith, people! (okay, I am going to finally read the rolling stone article on him so i'll be in the 'know' now)

Think it is an accident?
Wilco announced a show in Louisville today. So i think this is an accident

Happy about the Wilco show at Iroquois though!! And with Steve Gunn opening.

getting Tallest Man On Earth is a huge score too- he rarely tours.   If he does nothing for you, then it's a non-event, but for fans (like me), it's got me thinking how to get to Forecastle.

if its still available and its in your price range, the Galt House is the best. Its really close, really nice, and will be the most full of other fest goers. Prices may be a little better this year because there are two new hotels down town.

so now a friend said he got a text update from Wilco that they're playing Forecastle.
I said he probably read it wrong, and it was a text about the Iroquois show, especially since those tickets go on sale this morning...

I looked online last night, and this morning and have found nothing on this.
has anyone else seen anything?

Wilco's tour dates have Forecastle listed under tweedy dates still.

I already bought tickets to Iroquois on the presale, but would gladly see Wilco twice this spring/summer!

What sort of text? Like a roll call automatic message? Or a text from someone in or close to the band? Id love to see them twice as well, but I'm still unsure if that'll happen.

he made it sound like a text update from the band, like he signed up for a newsletter or something. I think he's mistaken. Like maybe he just saw Wilco in Louisville and assumed Forecastle? I don't know. But I have been searching online today, on that inforoo link in this thread, and on wilco's site and forecastle's site and have seen nothing.

I think i mentioned this in this thread already. Whenever Tweedy announces a show, it is announced on places such as BandsInTown (probably what your friend used) as "Wilco @ Tweedy announced a show at Forecastle!" its not wilco. Wilco isn't going to play Iroquois and Forecastle.

thank you. That makes much more sense now. I really didn't think wilco would play a show here in the spring and then come back for Forecastle. I also didn't think Tweedy would be announced for Forecastle, and then Wilco would play also!! I thought my friend was mistaken from the first time he mentioned it...

If MMJ is on Saturday and MM is on Sunday, all that really matters now is that Tweedy and White Reaper don't play friday, as I don't think I'll be able to get off work all three days.

REALLY ? I thought the War on Drugs sound was ,unfortunately, seriously affected by the wind. Their sound guys were runnin around trying to fight that beautiful Mexican breeze.

Hence, the killer "RIDE LIKE THE WIND" - Christopher Cross -MMJ OPENER

My money for runner up band is DR.DOG!!!

I am happy with Saturday and Sunday. Especially for The Word, Sturgill, War on Drugs and MMJ on Saturday. Sunday looking great to me too. Widespread Panic is an awesome live band!! Plus looking forward to seeing Tweedy again and hoping for a little solo set with Jeff doing Wilco songs. Maybe some guests??

let's hope for some great weather. Already took off Friday and Monday. Should be another great one.

I pulled the trigger today on Saturday passes for michaelsatterfield and myself. We saw WoD last week at the Georgia Theater in Athens and their addition to the Saturday lineup was the last push I needed to kick into "make it happen" mode.

We have listened to MMJ's 2012 Forecastle set so damn much and it's better every time.

Looking forward to finally experiencing the boys headlining their hometown festival!

MMJ will put on a very special show at Forecastle. Count on it to be one to remember! I wouldn't miss it.

Yeah. Forecastle 2012 basically was the launch of MMJ's current streak of amazing shows. It was mind-blowing to see the setlist we saw after the Circuital tour (which was horrible)

Definitely. It was like the start of spontaneous curation. Not to mention this show is shaping up to be OBH 2 the reunion. You'll have at least the war on drugs and Conor guest appearing on stage during their set.

Where are most of you guys staying? I bought our Saturday tickets pretty late in the game and most downtown hotels in close proximity to the waterfront are either booked or outrageously expensive.

I'm leaning towards the Market Street Inn just because everything else in that vicinity is upwards of $200/night and it's $150. It's actually in Jeffersonville, IN but just a short foot bridge walk from the Waterfront.

For all you out of towers looking for a place to stay that's close (10 minutes by car) look up hotels in Jeffersonville and Clarksville, Indiana. Price of living is a bit cheaper on this side of the river and its and uber is cheap travel. There is a nice Holiday Inn in Clarksville and Jeffersonville has a couple fairly new hotels. There is a walking bridge from Jeff to Louisville if you prefer not to battle traffic. We walked it all 3 days last year. 1.6 miles from the start of the bridge to the Forecastle gate.

One of the many sweet things about Forecastle is that those headliner set times are a definite "soft" end time. Jack White and Beck both went almost an hour over their allotted set. Bodes well for MMJ this year!

Dear lord, if MMJ, Conor Oberst, TTMOE or First Aid Kit collaborate in any way (and they should) don't tell me - I can't stand the heart break of not being there.

TTMOE back in 2012:

i'm seeing low-to-mid 90's for the weekend. i guess we shouldn't expect anything but hot and humid for mid-july in louisville.

looking like i'll have an extra GA weekend pass. $160. pm me if interested.

edit - pass sold.

My only complaint is sandwiching Sturgill Simpson between MMJ and WOD.
Should be a great weekend!

Also might need an extra tick for Sat/Sun if any extras out there.
Title: Re: Forecastle 2015

10 and 20% chance of rain makes me feel so much better. A little rain storm here and there over the weekend isn't the worst. Hope the ground has a chance to dry the next few days.

Sturgill is way less important to me than War on Drugs or MMJ, so I'm just planning on catching some of his set but not missing the end of WOD or the beginning of MMJ. Saturday looking the best day for me by far. Friday is weak. and closing out the weekend with Tweedy and then Panic sounds great.

Title: Re: Forecastle 2015

As of now we are looking at:

Fri -  Hi 95/Low 74     0% chance of rain and partly cloudy
Sat - Hi 94/Low 74    10% chance of rain and partly cloudy
Sun - Hi 95/Low 75    10% chance of rain and sunny

and of course that's not factoring in the humidity. Think you will find me near one of the water stations very often.

and now weather.com has us up to 97, 96, and 98 degrees.

jesus, the heat index will approach 105-110. let's hope they're wrong.  and god help the performers.  I hope they're more accustomed to such heat than this big baby.

oh well, it is what it is. just gotta deal.

on the news this morning they said 105 with the heat index. Some clouds would be appreciated. be prepared with sunscreen and some sort of bug repellant!! I found bug repellant wrist bands I am planning on wearing all weekend. And will have OFF spray and Sunscreen and a hat.

also remember that you can bring in an empty water bottle to fill up at the water station vs. spending $5 for a little bottle at the food vendors.

Getting so excited but trying to not worry about the heat and wet muddy grass.

95 degrees sounds like perfect Jacket weather!
Sure the heat will be miserable but I still plan on getting there 8 hours early with my camelbak and sticking it out knowing it will be worth it when I'm watching from the rail... I'm hoping the heat will keep it from getting too crowded too early before The Word or War on Drugs too

No definitive answer, but I did see online that MadPixel Design did an 'artist specific' poster for local band Houndmouth tonight.  I know that MadPixel and Status Serigraph both have nice looking Forecastle prints.   Status Serigraph has a foil variant of their print as well which always looks killer.   I am still holding out hope that MMJ will have their own print.

Is that not true karma for Forecastle bringing in a pop star with one album and making him a headliner? And listing him before MMJ and Widespread Panic on all the ads and posters etc.

he didn't start until 9:45, he couldn't have played more than 30 minutes!

Day 1 was just ok to me, wasn't really looking forward to much and didn't hear anything I would say was that great. we had fun walking around and checking out bands yesterday but there wasn't really anyone I was excited about.
We saw:
People Under the Stairs
a few minutes of Cold War Kids
St. Paul and Broken Bones
few minutes of Gaslight Anthem
most of Cage The Elephant
most of Houndmouth

sad to see "knot comes loose" on there. it must have been a late scratch, 'cause it wasn't played.

fantastic show, but kind of a festival-friendly greatest hits setlist.......not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anytime the band plays, it's gonna be a good time, but I was expecting a much better song selection for a headlining hometown show.

Exactly. I was there, and it was great. But that set list should have met casual fans and diehards half way. The only song that I would consider rare was Run Thru.

There definitely wasn't a "bananas" only-in-Louisville moment.

Johnny Quaid for the encore and Conor Oberst helping out on Wonderful were about the only things out of the ordinary.

I was thinking there would be at least one rarity or a new cover.

Still good, but I doubt I'll be going to a another festival for a show (that's not in my hometown).

Nashville is up next for me.

I was going to type "Sometimes an MMJ show cannot be judged by its set list." Then I realized that removing "sometimes" from that sentence makes it ring true.  What they brought to that Forecastle stage last night was magical and epic.

agreed about the setlist, though it was the first time I have seen them in 2 years so it was also good to hear some of the new songs live. I would have loved to hear Knot Comes Loose!! And they did finish a few minutes before 12. However I did still get to hear a few of my favorite songs: Off The Record, Steam Engine and Phone Went West. Lay Low was great too.

The best part for me was the nonstop crazy energy of Steam Engine>PWW>Run Thru

We didn't attempt to get close up. It was still just so hot and I do not enjoy bumper to bumper bodies. So we were about halfway back on the far right and I was happy I had some short people in front of me and I could see. also, a lot of people left early. They truly missed the best part of the show!

Yeah, I really didn't have a problem "holding it". I was sweating so much, that I didn't have to worry about needing to go to the restrooms. Plus, I have been pretty big most of my life and have probably developed a very large bladder. If I need to, I can wait hours and hours and hours. Although, I do have the beginnings of "old man bladder" happening these days, I can still manage pretty well. Also, I do have more really good photos. I just have to take some time to go through all of them, write down the number of each really good one, upload them to Photobucket, click on the link and post them here (takes some time). I'll get some up soon. Plus, I still haven't uploaded many of my Chicago photos yet. Those three nights were awesome! I've got all sorts of unique shots. Nashville on Aug. 6th will be my last show for a while (waiting for Indianapolis, Lexington, Cincinnati, and Louisville shows to be added possibly in the not too distant future). After Nashville, I'll have been to 8 Waterfall tour shows! The biggest MMJ year for me, so far!
that's what I call dedifuckincation! Mr. White how many Jacket shows altogether have you seen? ??

I'm with you on the big MMJ year. Logging 7 shows + the Dark Crystal thing just this summer. It's pretty special to me, and not many folks outside of our world realize that.

Well said, Woldie.

That was one hell of a show! No deep cuts and nothing too far out (bananas, anyone?), but the boys brought it as always! There was something really special in the air: the sunset, the festival grounds and toys, all of the sights, the bridges, the planes flying overhead, the lightshow... whew, it all combined to make Forecastle a truly epic experience.    :cheesy:

Jim's vocals were PERFECT and out of this world! All of the Waterfall songs have matured since I last heard them in Athens and Knoxville, and the addition of the symphony strings really added a special touch to some songs.

I'm hoping that MMJ releases an official bootleg of this show, but if not, I'll keep my fingers crossed for a taping to appear on archive. I missed the cult pamphlet but I would love to see its contents!

It was beautiful, just beautiful. LONG LIVE MMJ.

On a side note, it seems Sunday was the most crowded day of the 3 and it seemed to me, bc I was in the way back behind the walkway and the vendors, that Modest Mouse got the biggest crowd of any show I saw all weekend. I was on the far right side for MMJ and so I really didn't see how far back the crowd went, but seems like Forecastle could have made Modest Mouse the 3rd headliner and left the debacle of Sam Smith out completely. Though looking back it was for the best considering Sam Smith only got to play 4 songs.

I also know Widespread Panic has a huge following so between them and Modest Mouse I guess that's why Sunday seemed more crowded than the other 2 days.

Once again I thought the festival was very well done. They didn't seem to run out of water or anything and even the bathrooms seemed to be well maintained. Highlights of my weekend were MMJ, tweedy and Widespread Panic. I thought tweedy sounded great and was thrilled they closed their set with California Stars! Worst part of the weekend, and obviously out of anyone's control, was the unbelievable heat and humidity!!
